About the Artist
Apryl Renee wants to share her intimate thoughts with you. The North Carolina native is fast becoming a recognizable face on the R&B music scene, and she’d like to share her personal experiences with you through her music. From stunning, soul-drenched ballads to mid-tempo soul to grooving R&B, Apryl Renee is ready to make you understand her life’s trials and treasures. With a vocal style that evokes memories of a young Whitney Houston, seasoned with some Angela Bofill with just a dash of Yolanda Adams sprinkled in for good measure, the Durham-based Renee gives you a kaleidoscope of sonic melodies that you can feel. A natural talent, Apryl Renee is now in the process of recording her debut cd, and with producer Chip Shearin leading the way, Renee’s project is bound to be nothing short of an instant R&B classic that transcends time. Stunning and graceful in her stage presence, Apryl Renee exhibits a city-girl taste for music fused in with a delectable country girl’s charm. And it all makes for a delightful package of good music. Renee can be all at once sassy and demure, religious and sexy. And the audience is all the better for watching Apryl Renee work her magic. "I don’t have any reservations about singing R&B," says Renee, who sang in the church choir in her hometown of Wadesboro, North Carolina. "I understand that I can be an R&B singer and still be a Christian."

Music and singing has always been a big part of Apryl Renee’s life. Renee started tinkering with the piano at age four, and began taking serious lessons at age eight. "I used to go with my mom when she was taking lessons," Renee says. "My mom noticed that I had an interest in playing the piano, so she went out and got one of those big, stand-up pianos so I could play all the time." After winning numerous awards for her songbird talents in high school, Renee enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. At UNC, Renee quickly became one of the lead vocalists for the gospel choir. She also began earning a reputation as a pure singer much in the same tradition as Whitney Houston, whom Renee credits with being a major influence.

Sometimes it only takes one experience to make a person realize their destiny. For Apryl Renee, that experience was performing at the famed Apollo Theater in Harlem during Amateur Night, where she advanced to the showoff round. "Performing at the Apollo gave me more motivation to do what I wanted to do, which was to sing," Renee says. "That experience taught me that I didn’t need to put singing on the shelf; that I could sing for a living and be successful."

Possessing all the qualities for stardom – beauty, charm, grace and talent, Apryl Renee is poised to lure you into her world of music. Not merely an entertainer, Renee writes all of her songs and is more than capable of composing her own material as well. So what does the future hold for Apryl Renee? "I want to sing for the rest of my life," she says. "I want to be doing this for as long as I can, until I have nothing left to give." The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

i have loved jackopierce for so many years now, i can't even remember the 1st time that i listened to them. i know they were first introduced to me in college, along with shiner bock and robert earl keen, and all things texas. this is actually the 3rd time i've purchased this cd, as every time i take it to someone's house and play it, it ends up in their possesion. bottom line--great cd--one of the few that i can listen to from beginning to end, for years and years on end.

The first time I saw Jackopierce perform live was during the final concert tour back in 1997. I first heard of them when a good friend introduced me to their music my freshman year of college and after the first few lines of "Vineyard", I was hooked. I love all of their albums and Decade highlights almost every song of theirs. Every song affects me in some way. Their music is melodic and beautiful I only wish the song "Back Next Year" from Live From the Americaswas included but that's all the more reason to buy Live from the Americas! Though they are no more, their amazing music will live on in their many c.d.'s.

This cd is a great compilation of their best stuff. I prefer the 1st disc the most, since it's mostly acoustic, but all their music is quality. If you like these guys, you should definitely check out the Nadas, a very quality group of musicians, which is refreshing in today's music scene.

The band is one of those that just gets you thinking. They write about real life situations. they have the ability to write a song and make it stick. this new cd is awsome i love the last song on the second cd. it has no name but it makes you think that we all need to move on. it has a line from the samples a group taht is similar to JP. i hope you love it as much as i do. thanks JP for all the great years you gave us.

A unique ensemble -- it's a shame it had to come to an end........2007-06-07

Some of you might know -- but others might not -- that there was a group called the Dixie Chicks, formed back in the late 80s, that was very different from today's group of the same name. The two groups are related, of course; sisters Martie and Emily Erwin were members of both the original ensemble and the current group. But they really should have changed the name of the band somewhere along the line, because today's group bears little resemblance, in appearance or music, to that original group -- whose first album was "Thank Heavens for Dale Evans".
Clearly, the majority of Americans prefer the new group -- as evidenced by the fact that the new Chicks have found the commercial success that always eluded the original Chicks. But the changes that were required to achieve that success came at a heavy artistic cost. Today's country/pop/rock sound makes the Chicks just part of that generic pop scene that sells most of the records, but has little real art to it. The original Dixie Chicks, on the other hand, were a truly unique group: An all-girl band who could really play and sing serious bluegrass and western swing music. And I mean really play. You'll have to try to get a copy of this album to see that I'm right about that.
Unfortunately, getting a copy might not be easy since the "new" Chicks have tried mightily to erase any memory of their past. "Thanks Heavens for Dale Evans" is out of print and will never be re-released, because Martie, Emily, and Natalie Maines want everyone to forget about Robin Lynn Macy and Laura Lynch -- the other two members of the original group, and the two members who were the real personality and heart and soul of the group (I saw them perform live in the early 90s, and Robin and Laura absolutely sparkled during the performance, while the Erwin sisters -- providing superb instrumental and vocal performances, to be sure -- pretty much stayed in the background from a personality standpoint). I especially remember Robin twisting her hips in time to the music, her western skirt swishing back and forth, as she strummed away at her guitar and sang the lead on the title song to this album. When she, and later Laura, left (were forced out of?) the group, it was the end of something special -- a really unique musical ensemble.
If you can get a copy of this CD, please do so. You might find that the past the current Chicks wish to hide was really the high point of the group's history.

Great Texas country and an outstanding female voice........2007-03-31

One of the greatest female country music albums of the 90's. It is real Texas country with an outstanding vocal performance and a nice fiddle too. If you are looking for the cookie cutter country music of today, don't buy this album! This is nothing like the Dixie Chicks' music of today. But, if you want real, refined and pure country music, you will be hard pressed to find a better one. Check out "West Texas Winds", one of the greatest renditions ever recorded. Enjoy.

Different Chicks, somewhat different sounds.......2006-09-03

I have been a big Chicks fan since "Fly" and supported them through "the incident". I got to see their recent concert and wanted to hear them from "before". I was not disappointed. This album and their older sound has it's own special, acoustic and bluegrass charm. Glad I got it, the old and new Chicks rule!

I drove across country shortly after getting this cd, and I barely took it out of the cd player the whole way--not sure how many hundreds of times that means I've listened to this! I love the "new" Dixie Chicks, too (sisters Martie and Emily Erwin are the only common thread), but I was curious about their previous sound, and I wasn't disappointed! This is a great record, with a lot of great harmony and, of course, talented ladies playing the heck out of just about every stringed instrument there is.

That said, buy their new records too! Natalie Maines, the lead singer, is witty and expressive, and her beautiful voice goes great with Martie and Emily's fiddle/banjo/mandolin/etc. Laura Lynch and Robin Lynn Macy brought some very different things to the mix, but their departures were largely, if not entirely, their own choices, and I hate to see Natalie punished for that.

GREAT, GREAT, GREAT! This was my first cd by these guys, and it wasn't my last. This disc remains in my CD payer! I would recommend this album to anyone who loves music that contains some good lyrics, music and fun! These guys jam. You will laugh, smile and wonder why you didn't buy this sooner! I play all of their cd's at parties, b/c they are a great addition!

A beautiful, soulful, acoustic live album.......1999-05-14

This album captures the energy that is a Jackopierce concert. The focus is on the right things: great storytelling, strong vocals and wonderful acoustic guitar playing. On the whole, a very mellow album with a few wake up calls with My Baby and Vineyard, the ultimate feel good song. I highly recommend this album.

If you love James Taylor or just great acoustic music than you will love this CD. This show captures the great songwriting and talents of these two men. It is everything a live record should be and I promise that if you put this CD on you won't stop listening to it. It's better than Lays brand potato chips. I wish this band was still together but alas stuff happens. Anyway, this CD is amazing and I hope you at least try it because I swear, its that good!!!!!

Great, but not their absolute best.......2005-12-24

Their best pre-Natalie Maines album, in my opinion, was "Thank Heavens for Dale Evans"--but that doesn't mean I don't love this one too! In addition to the other influences already mentioned, I really hear Bob Wills on this album, especially the title track.

Whatever else one may say about them, they don't sound quite like anybody else and nobody else sounds quite like them, a rarity in this age of bland, overproduced pop music; they took a bunch of different influences and blended them into something all their own.

Before they were famous.......2004-02-09

The first thing to say about this album is that it is very different in style from the music that most people expect from the Dixie Chicks. It has elements of folk, country and bluegrass but no pop whatsoever.

For this album, the line-up was Laura Lynch, Robin Lynn Macy, Martie Erwin and Emily Erwin. Before the Chicks became famous, Robin and Laura left. Robin later became a member of Domestic Science Club. Martie and Emily stayed and were joined by Natalie Maines. On this album, Robin and Laura took turns as lead singer, except for one instrumental track. Banjo (played by Emily) and fiddle (played by Martie) are the dominant instruments.

There are some interesting covers of A road is just a road (Mary Chapin Carpenter), Past the point of rescue (Hal Ketchum), Hallelujah I love him/her so (Ray Charles) and You send me (Sam Cooke), all of which sound very different from the originals, but I love them. There's also a brilliant Irish medley. Most, if not all, of the other songs are originals, several being written by members of the group.

Although I loved this album when I first heard it - and still do - it is very un-commercial and I was therefore taken by surprise when I learned that the Dixie Chicks had made it big time. Somehow, they managed to commercialise their sound while still remaining distinctive - no mean achievement.

This is a fascinating album of a remarkably high quality, but it is a much more rural form of music than the commercial music they became famous for after Natalie replaced Robin and Laura.

The roots of the Dixie Chicks.......2003-04-03

The humble beginnings of the Dixie Chicks -- a nice indie effort, which ranges from stringband swing and singer-songwriterish Americana to would-be Nashville demos and cutesy covers of 'Fifties oldies such as Ray Charles' "Hallelujah I Love Her So" and Sam Cooke's "You Send Me." In this pre-Natalie Maines version of the band, guitar and bass are provided by Robin Lynn Macy and Laura Lynch -- the Pete Bests of "young country" -- who also both handle the primary songwriting and singing chores. This album has its weak points and its charms; certainly, the spirit of Nanci Griffith hangs heavily over the whole album, and the band's indie-Americana origins are easy to spot. Released on a small Dallas-based indie label, Crystal Clear Sound.

This CD has 16 beautiful songs for kids of all ages.It has Holiday songs and all kinds of music that are so pleasant to listen to for the whole family. My Daughter loves all the songs especially the song " We Love Shabbot" The CD also explains the meaning of Shabbot and other Holidays as well.

The songs are in English and some of the songs add some Hebrew to it. It really is such a delightful CD for the whole Family. I highly Recommend this.

Easy to learn for little guys.......2006-02-24

The CD was purchased for a children's workshop rotation on Jerusalem. The age range was from nursery school to Grade 3.
This CD was pleasing to listen to (for adults too) and the songs easy to learn for the children.

Redo the Stacks is brilliant and got all the "ooh oohs" at the right places. Very charming lo-fi indie rock for fans of Superchunk or early Get Up Kids.

Greatest Power Pop Album of All Time?.......2003-06-05

Redo the Stacks is simply one of the best power pop records that I have ever heard. That might sound like damning with faint praise, but I swear it's not. The songs on Redo the Stacks are catchy and gloriously sloppy -- maybe kind of like a ragged version of Weezer. Out of the 20+ songs, there's hardly a bad one in the bunch. The songs range from lo-fi acoustic demos to full-blown rockers, but the songs all share a beautiful sense of melody. Some of the highlights for me are "Fidgeting Wildly", "Cannot Compete", "Don't Smash the Qualifying Man", "Tied to the Trailer". Don't take that to mean that those are the only good songs though; there's no filler here which is amazing for an album with so many songs.

For those familiar with only with later Centromatic stuff, the sound on this early record is kind of different. It's definitely a rawer sound, but it's certainly no less beautiful or melodic.

I am die hard fan of Shoegazer music, i.e. The Cure, My Bloody Valentine, etc. However, I am really impressed with this obscure band. This band's style is the antithesis of what I would normally listen to. For the life of me I cannot figure out why I am so moved by this band. The lead singer's voice is hardly palatable, but then again neither is Robert Smith's. Go figure. UGH! This is frustrating!! I really LOVE this band. I have this weird feeling that this band is going to be big. Too late, they are already number two on the college charts according to Rolling Stone magazine(July) . I have seen the future, and brace yourself this band is going to change alternative music.

Heard these guys in Denton. Their songs are so simple, but so great. The album is recorded with cheap equipment, so it comes across as honest. It reminds me alot of Becks first recordings, although Centro-Matic is much more comprehensive.

This CD has some of the greatest lo-fi, mid-fi and hi-fi indi-rock you'll ever hear. Amazingly catchy pop songs next to heart wrenching lyrics. A real keeper.

Not Bad, but.......2005-12-24

Not as consistently good as "Thank Heavens for Dale Evans", but definitely worth having. You can definitely hear the sound getting more "packaged" as the girls try to make it big and move away from their bluegrass roots, and the increased slickness makes for a less interesting record, but this is still great music!

It's the beginning of the end--maybe even the end of the end--for Laura Lynch, though. The more contemporary sound of this album does her no favors (I thought she was ideally suited to the more nostalgic style of "Thank Heavens for Dale Evans"). The bluegrass-style rough edges are gone, paving the way for the totally different (but also wonderful, in my opinion) edginess of Natalie Maines, which is what really made these girls big stars in the end.

The best of their early indie albums.......2003-04-03

This is the first album I heard the Dixie Chicks on, and for years I had them fixed in my mind as this nice, unassuming alt.country act, not realizing for some time what a huge success they'd become in Nashville. The act noticibly starts to tighten up, first with the loss of songwriter Robin Lynn Macy, and the inclusion of much more material by outside composers, such as Jim Lauderdale, Kim Richey and Jamie O'Hare. The catchy Radney Foster tune, "Whistles And Bells," is still one of my favorite DC songs, but after that opening salvo, the band's newfound professionalism is readily apparent -- the basic building blocks of their sound are all in place here, and the Erwin sisters, Emily and Martie, are beginning to assert themselves as lead singers and songwriters. More bad news for lead singer Laura Lynch: Lloyd Maines, Natalie's daddy, was brought in to play pedal steel on a few tracks, and thus, the writing's on the wall. Fans of the Chick's Top 40 Nashville hits will find this the most accessible and familiar-sounding of their early indie albums. It's slick, solidly produced and yet still soulful.

Not What You Might Expect From The Chicks.........2001-08-06

Well, I must say that, while this is an amazing album, it is nothing like what fans of "Wide Open Spaces" and "Fly" will expect. The leading lady on this CD, Laura Lynch, sounds nothing like Natalie Maines, the current lead singer of the Dixie Chicks.

1. "Whistles and Bells" Great country song, sounds like the old days of the Grand 'Ole Opry. Very traditional song, "Whistles and Bells won't ever bring you love and happiness, She's never gonna give her heart the way that I would give." A very beautiful song worth listening to.

2. "I'm Falling Again" Written and sung so smoothly and simply, it just stays with you from the moment you hear it. "We're destined to win, I'm falling again- right back where I been" A sweet, tender love song, very expressive banjo.

3. "Shouldn't A Told You That" I actually don't understand the title of this fast paced, square dancing-themed, very catchy title track. "I'm only human, he shouldn't a told me that." A fabulous song, the best fast song of the album. Very good instrumental riffs and vocals.

4. "Desire" "I can't undo what's been done when the web's already spun, I got caught up in desire" Just a fast, fun, beautiful, emotional song. Although, "Can't Undo What's Been Done" might have been a more appropriate title.

5. "There Goes My Dream" Starts off sounding a bit like "Cold Day In July," then reverts to what sounds like "I'm Falling Again" with different lyrics. My favorite of the album, beautiful, melancholy and sorrowful.

The rest of the album SERIOUSLY drags. "Planet of Love" is a torture session, sheer misery! "I've Only Got Myself To Blame" could have been much better with a little more effort in the tune, but as it is, it's barely worth mentioning. The other three songs are okay, but just don't have any passion or thought in the lyrics, it's as though Laura is merely reading the words from a sheet of paper and struggling to stay on key. And it isn't working. I feel I must warn that Laura's voice isn't as powerful as Natalie's, it's a very traditionally folk song voice, but it packs no power, no passion for what she's singing. Also, the songs on here are either love ballads, or slow songs stating a regretted afair. Nothing has the quirkiness of "Don't Waste Your Heart," "Goodbye Earl" or "Tonight The Heartache's On Me."

I still recommend this CD, just don't expect it to be anything like "Fly" or "Wide Open Spaces." "Shouldn't A Told You" demonstrates a very classical country sound and style with a very simple theme and little creativity between songs, which isn't always a bad thing.

Crystal Clear CD by Jaci Velasquez.......2005-08-13

This is the BEST CD Jaci has made! It is very exciting Latin music. It is a Christian recording, but will hold the excitement of teenagers. I know, because I bought one for me, one for my grandaughter for her birthday (she loved mine so much and she's 14), and one for her boyfriend who had been listening to his sister's CD and had been wanting it! He is 15! If you like fast, exciting Latin music, by all means, don't miss getting this one!

The lady can sing, but her "Christian" message is compromised because of her part in "Chasing Papi", where she played a woman who - had she had the chance - would have hopped into bed with her on-screen boyfriend prior to marriage. It's "Crystal Clear" to me that Jaci broke my heart in a million pieces when she played that part. It's really tragic to see such a beautiful young lady with such a opowerful voice and message now reduced to nothing more than a hypocritical wannabee, much in the same way that Stacie Orrico is now becoming.....and is it just me, or is it coincidence that these two womens' album covers look strikingly similar? It appears their paths in life are similar, too: compromising a message and a stand that once set them worlds apart. As with a recent review of Orrico that I made, I'll give Jaci Velasquez her due: she can sing, and what I mean by that is sing the roof off of a house! This album was excellent.....was. Now, whenever I think or hear of Jaci Velasquez, I can only think one word: HYPOCRITE.

great singer - great voice.......2005-01-24

Jaci Velasquez is a young singer who has a great voice and a great start to her career. Although she doesn't write all her songs, she does quite a lot of them and I think they're great, and nobody's gonna change my mind. I have several of her CDs and this is one of my favorites. Just so you know, I think the samples they chose here are horrible and I think you will like the CD a lot better unless you are just one of those people who can't be pleased and critisize everything, like some people who have written on here.

ok heres the deal. jaci is an average singer that has a hype of this superwonderful voice and powerhouse. it's not true. her voice is nice at best and her songs are (generally) trite and simple, with melodies stolen from current pop songs (tell me you can't sing Jennifer Lopez's (don't get me started on her sub-par singing voice)"if you had my love" to the chorus of jaci's "every time i fall". if i was j.lo's agent i'd sue). this isn't her only song that does this, but i can't remember anymore so it's hard to believe me, i know. :) I had (notice - HAD) the enhanced version that encluded exclusive interviews (!!) with jaci at home. it was all so touching...anyways. so i got "special insight" to the song on the album. she said everyone but her didn't want "crystal clear" to be on the album but she insisted. too bad she didn't listen. its one of those confusing songs that leaves you thinking "wait...are you talking about God...or your boyfriend?!?" if you wanna sing a love song (which CC most assuredly is) than DO it! don't try to pass if off as singing to God, cuz it just comes off as a little weird and confusing. and I don't have enough time to get started on "Adore Adore Adore Adore...etc etc etc" what she needs is a window (ok ok it's a bad joke sorry). but actually i like to use the door when i hear that song. i don't recommend this to ANYone! if you MUST get a jaci cd, then i hesitantly suggest "unspoken"(also a kinda dumb song but 2 to 3 star cd). ok im done.

Wow...I..........2004-08-03

This was sooo great. I borrowed this CD from a friend and after a few listens i was stunned. The first time i listened to it, I found it kind of slow, but the more i listened, i found the lyrics helpful, and i found i was almost entraced with it. i reccomend this. i really do.
