Album Description

Thirty six years is a long time for a band to survive in today's cutthroat music jungle. The secret? Richard and Fred Young, along with cousins Anthony Kenney, Greg Martin and long time friend Doug Phelps, never set out to play music for a living. They were born to be together and they live to play music. Some of the Kentucky Headhunters albums have sold millions, others in the thousands. However, one thing remains the same....they are one of a kind, originals. The music on "Flying Under The Radar" reflects the broad musical landscape the Heads have developed over the years. Here's one from a band that still knows how to keep it...Flying Under The Radar!!

5 out of 5 stars What a great album!.......2007-04-04

I saw these guys live last summer and they were great! This new stuff is even better than the old tracks. They've gotten better with age.

5 out of 5 stars Flyin Under The Radar CD.......2006-08-07

Great cd! I would definitely recommend it to any music lover. Kentucky Headhunters are GREAT!

5 out of 5 stars Raw rock and roots music.......2006-07-31

A good introduction to the Headhunters - sort of a recent 'best of'. Great mix of tracks. A band who has remained true to their roots unlike Skynyrd who have gone one dimensional. Hard to classify this band - roots, rock, country, blues, you name it. Have a listen to their 'Soul' CD. Whilst they may not have the chart success they originally enjoyed, musically they just get better and better. Quality music that grows on the listener.

4 out of 5 stars ITS FEAT JIM, BUT NOT AS WE KNOW IT (THEM).......2006-07-10

I HAVE 4 LF ALBUMS FROM THE LOWELL GEORGE ERA BUT, FOLLOWING HIS DEATH, I LOST INTEREST THINKING IT WOULD BE THE 'END OF THE LINE' FOR A FINE ROCK BAND WHO HAD LOST THEIR LEAD SINGER, MAJOR SONGWRITER AND PRODUCER. RECENTLY, I NOTICED THAT THE BAND WERE STILL PUTTING OUT ALBUMS SO I BOUGHT THIS ONE TO SEE HOW THEY WERE 'GETTING BY' WITHOUT LOWELL.

THIS IS HOW I SUM UP THIS ALBUM (COMPARED TO THEIR EARLIER STUFF) :

SONGS - PRETTY GOOD BUT NOT AS ACCESSIBLE AS THOSE WRITTEN BY LOWELL; LYRICS - A BIT OBSCURE AT TIMES BUT IT DOESN'T MATTER (THEY STILL SOUND GOOD); VOCALS - LEAD VOCALS MAINLY SHARED BY PAUL BARRERE (SOUNDING A BIT LIKE LOWELL AT TIMES) AND SHAUN MURPHY (GREAT VOICE); ARRANGEMENTS - MORE ELABORATE AND INTERESTING; MUSICIANSHIP AND PRODUCTION - STILL EXCEPTIONALLY GOOD.

SOME COMMENTS ABOUT INDIVIDUAL TRACKS (All songs written by band members in various permutations), * denotes a favourite track :

EDEN'S WALL* - Weird intro (sounds like someone yodelling in an empty biscuit tin - maybe it is) but the track soon gets down to 'business' with LF delivering their inimitable brand of rock music. Pretty good lead vocals by Paul Barrere - includes a short duet with Shaun Murphy.

VALE OF TEARS* - A good song (but not exactly 'catchy'). Stunning vocals by Shaun Murphy; very restrained playing by the rest of the band (quite right too). Features acoustic and electric guitar accompaniment.

LOCOMOTIVES* - This track just 'boogies'; good vocals (Paul Barrere) and great slide guitar.

FEROCIOUS MORNING* - Slow tempo funky blues-rock, Shaun Murphy on vocals (enough said).

FALLING THROUGH WORLDS* - Slow tempo 'atmospheric' song with a brooding, almost menacing, quality. Features a short semi-acoustic instrumental solo with a mexican feel to it. Vocals by that woman again.

THE BLUES DON'T TELL IT ALL* - Up tempo song - a real 'foot tapper'; great guitar licks and Shaun Murphy belting out the vocals (without going 'over the top').

I GOT HAPPINESS - I quite liked the song but the vocals are too harsh and gravelly for my liking. Don't know who does the singing on this track - but it's definitely NOT Shaun Murphy.

APART FROM A COUPLE OF RELATIVELY 'SEDATE' (BUT STILL PRETTY GOOD) TRACKS ('Vale of Tears' and 'Under the Radar'), THIS ALBUM IS A POWERHOUSE OF HIGH ENERGY 'SOUTHERN FRIED' FUNK, ROCK AND BOOGIE MUSIC. GET IT AND PLAY IT OFTEN (BUT 'TURN UP THE WICK' ON YOUR AMP FIRST). THERE ARE NO 'FILLERS' ON THIS ALBUM AND ITS WORTH BEARING IN MIND THAT THERE IS c.70 MINUTES WORTH OF MUSIC ON IT (NOT BAD FOR A NON-COMPILATION ALBUM).

SO, LF SEEMED TO HAVE MADE THE ADJUSTMENT FOLLOWING LOWELL'S DEPARTURE; GIVEN HIS INFLUENCE AND VERSATILITY, THIS IS NO MEAN FEAT.

MY RATINGS : THE SONGS - 3 STARS; THE MUSIC - 5+ STARS; SHAUN MURPHY - 5+ STARS.

5 out of 5 stars Strong Outting.......2005-05-08

Do yourself a favor and don't compare this incarnation of LF with that headed by Lowell George. George was a great song writer and musician and contributed to several classic LF releases. But this CD is too good to approach it with expectations or prejudgements. This CD is excellent. Each cut here is an absolute winner. Shaun Murphy has an incredibly strong and expressive voice, and is equally effective on the ballads, to wit, "Vale of Tears", WOW. I could listen to her all day. The lead male vocals sound like a cross between Steve Winwood and Paul Carrack PERFECTLY layered over the music which can best be described as contemporary, southern boogie, jam, rock, with an edge. Technically, Bill Payne continues to impress (I can hardly wait to get his new solo CD), Barerre and Tackett are in top form. The audio recording and sound quality is fantastic. All around a very solid effort. As Rolling Stone magazine states, "all killer no filler". I concur.

5 out of 5 stars A Sacrilegious View.......2003-08-15

Been a Feat Fan since Dixie Chicken, seen them live then and recently, and I love Lowell George but ... IT'S A BETTER* BAND NOW! Shaun Murphy is the most powerful rock female vocalist I've heard since Janis Joplin (and I've seen her live, too). One of my all time favorite CDs in a large music library. Get this! And by all means, if you get a chance to see them live do yourself a big favor (be sure to wear your boogie shoes). I think Billy Payne is the most exciting rock keyboard player extant.

* "Better Band" = tighter, more emotionally engaging, higher energy, more consistent

5 out of 5 stars Vail of Tears-Awesome!.......2003-02-27

I have followed Little feat since the Lowell George days. This IS the best record (since he past away) that Little Feat has put out to date (remember, I am writing in 2003). Shaun Murphy is just incredible on this record. You can feel that the rest of the band members are revitalized ... no infected in a positive way by her presence. And the master musicians are still the master musicians. The jams are tight and freely polished to perfection here. Under The Radar, Eden's Wall, and Vale of Tears are what stick out in my mind as some of the bands best work. Thank the lord that Little Feat never did try to make 3 minute AM radio stuff! They are too good for that! Incredible and awesome spin!

4 out of 5 stars Very good!.......2000-07-23

If one is ready to quit griping about the loss of Lowell George and accept the Shaun Murphy/Paul Barrere era Little Feat, this album will do just nicely. While not as strong as "Ain't Had Enough Fun," it has moments that equal or surpass that release. The back to back powerhouse of I Got Happiness/Calling the Children Home is almost worth the price of the CD alone. Shaun Murphy turns in one of her finest performances with Hoy-Hoy and the title track is a plesant enough listen. And while I still have some issues with the barely capable songwriting that mixes with Shaun's powerful voice and reaps something that resembles uninspired country, I am getting used to Murphy and none of the music is unlistenable or bad. And there is no denying that when they're right on, Little Feat is unbeatable.

I've owned this album since it came out and it still holds up after all of these years. Watched Grade a bunch of times live - they put on an awesome show.

In my opinion, if you are a taylor hicks fan you are going to LOVE Grade's "Under the Radar" !!!!! Fans of Taylor Hicks will also enjoy Earth Crisis. Hey maybe I'm way off, but you never know. Buy it now. You'll thank me later. Taylor Hicks is the new Kyle Bishop!!!! WOW! Yeah!

if you got this cd because you thought it was taylor hicks your an idiot, why wouldn't you do a little more research before buying this and is it really necessary to come on here and give it a bad review just because your stupid. Im gonna go give the taylor hicks record a bad review now because its not the grade album. dumb!

Don't be fooled by this CD. It is not Taylor Hick's. Amazon has repeatedly been told that it's not his, yet they continue to list it when Taylor's name is brought up in a search.

This is not Taylor Hicks' Under the Radar CD. His is available elsewhere. Why Amazon continues to try to fool its customers by associating this CD with Taylor is beyond me. Don't be fooled.

    5 out of 5 stars Must have..........2006-08-28

I feel sorry for the band Grade and this great CD getting low ratings and reviews by illiterate American Idol viewers. If you are a fan of post-hardcore/hardcore/"emo" then this CD should be a part of your collection. You may say it sounds like everything else out there today but let me remind you that this band pre-dates most of them and they were amazing.

    5 out of 5 stars A new guitar hero.......2004-10-03

This is a real magnificent rock-blues album! One of the best I have ever came across. Many people like to compare Albert Cummings with the great SRV, however I believe that no comparison should be made, Albert is Albert with his own stile and feelings. He has got a very, I believe, personal style that makes him emerge from the crowd and that makes him unique in the rock-blues firmament. "From the heart" is almost the perfect rock-blues album that shouldn't be missed by any rock-blues fan. Fantastic!

5 out of 5 stars WoW - Doesn't Get Any Better Than This ! .......2004-09-22

I had the immense pleasure of seeing Albert's show at Revolution Hall in Troy, NY recently .. he was fabulous and I, of course, immediately purchased the CD. It has yet to leave the CD player in my car and I lost count of how many people have driven with me & then immediately gone out to buy the CD after hearing it - it's that good. Albert's passion for his music is apparent on the CD, even more so live, but either way it is something he shares with his audience/listener. It has been a while since I have been so enthusiastic about an artist, but perhaps even longer that an artist came along such as Albert that is so deserving of the accolades. I can not recommend him highly enough and as soon as I can preorder his next CD, which I hear has Stevie Ray Vaughan's old band, Double Trouble, as back-up, I will be the first in line.... and when he plays at Revolution Hall again for a CD release party, I will being showing up with a huge contingent of friends and family that are all now fans as well.

5 out of 5 stars From The Heart.......2004-08-22

I've seen Albert three times live, bought From the Heart after the first set I saw . I loved it! The second time I saw Albert,8/2/03 (my B'day),he was opening for Buddy Guy in VT.The set was awesome so I bought his first cd, also very good, which Albert signed first.I just saw Albert 8/19/04 in Guilderland,NY. and another Smokin' set was enjoyed by all! He told me I have to wait until 10/2/04 for his next cd. I know I'll be at Troy's Revolution Hall cd release show to pick up my copy. I can't wait!

5 out of 5 stars The next major blues star!.......2003-11-15

Albert Cummings is fantastic. This CD is solid from start to finish and gives you a glimpse of how great of a performer Albert is in concert. You don't get that captured on a blues studio recording very often but this is one of those times where that greatness shines through.

Tell everyone to pick up this CD!

    5 out of 5 stars Great voice & tone........2003-09-28

There's no awe inspiring warp speed guitar playing on this cd but the tone, vocals and band make it a top 10 in my collection.

5 out of 5 stars GO SEE HARPER!!!!!.......2005-04-23

This Aussie blues/roots rock man has come along way in the past few years. I have had the chance to see him on a few occasions, and let me tell you it was amazing. This CD is ok but it is not all of the musicians he is currently touring with. The drummer and guitar player on this CD are weak. However if you get the chance to see them currently PLEASE GO!!! Their current drummer Ken Garr is amazing, and their 19 year old guitar player Tyler Mac is the best I have seen live in a LONG time. The 4 of them really click together and I hope they keep producing the great sound that they are today. I beleive you can check their web site to see if they are playing near you... the website was www.harper.biz check 'em out!!!

2 out of 5 stars Horrible CD! One of the worst I own.......2005-03-13

I would give Harper only 1 star but he at least has a cookin band backing him up which tries to cover for his lack of well....everything! His harp playing is too spuratic (for my tastes) throughout the CD and what he does play is very "John Popper Like" on most occasions. There isn't one song on here that jumps out at you. From 1 to 11 it's just more of the same. It's just what you'd expect from an Australian blues man. It's kinda like INXS meets Kevin Eubanks. This is the first review I've ever written but I just felt so ripped off I had to let it out. I don't think Harper new which direction he was going with this. One song on here is called "I know" and another is called "I really don't know"...I couldn't agree more!

this is a wonderful cd. it will be listened to many times and is easily one of my favorites of 2006.
Imagine this; the fabulous thunderbirds meet little feat at Tony Joe White's house in the swamps of louisiana. And the crowns accomplish this with total originality.
Fine production makes the music jump out of your speakers, Great duet vocals by kim nail and female backing vocals add another dimension to this aural treat.

Many of these artists are virtually unknown to the mass market, but Christine believes that to make it to a much larger audience, all they need is to be heard. Their work is that good.

Make room on your CD rack for this, a collection of 16 songs from different songwriters, put together by Christine Lavin (who contributes a track, the concert favorite "Harrison Ford"). This collection highlights new, not well-known folk musicians (some would say that's redundant). It's an extremely rare bird who will like every cut on this album ("Walk on Water" and "Prom Dress" are way off my permament play list), but it will almost certainly inspire you to take a closer look at some of the artists. Jackie Tice's "Marijo Tonight" has elements of "Piano Man" combined with a fascinating ethnic feel, the Electric Bonsai Bands "Lounging in the Belly of the Beast" recalls the best of the 80s pop-rock stylings and Gideon Freudmann's electric cello solo instrumental "River Skeeters" gives me the absolute willies (in a good way)... If you have any interest in folk music, this CD will be sure to expand your horizons.
