That Holiday Feeling by Steve Lawerence and Edie Gorme.......2007-01-16
Superb Christmas CD.......2007-01-09
I used to have this "album" on 33 1/3 vinyl and made the mistake of lending it out one year. I have searched for this title for 25 years and finally it was re released. It is the essence of the time of year brought
to you by sincere and dedicated singers who "live" the Holiday season. A must buy.....
One of the Great Holiday Albums.......2006-11-26
With the advent of CDs in the early 80s, I gave up my turntable and sold off most of my LPs -- and of course soon missed this recording, since it wasn't to be found on CD. After dozens and dozens and dozens of listenings over the years, I could "hear" this album in my head, but of course it wasn't the same.
So I was overjoyed to find this recording finally remastered onto CD last year. Having become a musician in the intervening years, when I played the CD I experienced not only nostalgia from my childhood but also found that my now-trained musical ear immediately recognized these instrumental arrangements as being top-notch. Steve and Eydie were of course in exceptional vocal form when they made this recording [and the digital transfer is terrific], but since they are noted for being dedicated to having the right orchestral sound, they certainly chose an excellent crew [headed by the great Don Costa] when they made this recording. The musicians and the orchestrations are a perfect match for the vocalists.
The "big band" sound on some of the tracks is terrific, but the softer selections feature some really shimmering and subtle orchestral work. I won't do a track-by-track review, but here's a prime example: Anyone doing "White Christmas" always has Bing Crosby in their memory, since that song-and-artist are one of the classic partnerships. There have been a LOT of covers over the years, but they've all been lame attempts at being cheery and warm. However, the arrangement here for Eydie Gorme takes a decidedly different tack, starting with a decidedly bittersweet intro and going on to include some rapturous yet very subdued backing vocals. And Miss Gorme's vocals are passionate and full-bodied. The result is a version that is so unique and beautifully artistic that it more than holds its own if anyone insists on comparing it with Crosby's. No easy task, that.
Mr. Lawrence is of course terrific as well. His creamy baritone fits his solos very well -- a smooth sound, and a knack for lyric interpretation. Well, the same can be said for Miss Gorme, for both these artists have a true talent for really dedicating themselves to the song at hand [as opposed to the multitude of performers whose prime concern has been to make the song merely a tool to show off their voices]. On the numerous duets, they both make the fun palpable and engaging.
Given the plethora of pop music Christmas albums that have been produced over the decades, this really is one of the few that really feels like a holiday album. Other artists think merely warbling their way through holiday songs is sufficient, but Lawrence and Gorme are never anything less than a joy -- their infectious fun and heartfelt singing make this sound like a live performance rather than a studio recording. Even the use of sleighbells on one number, usually a very hackneyed, trite, and pedantic orchestral trick, actually contributes to the fun and doesn't sound remotely corny.
So if you like singers with exquisite taste and solid vocal technique, if you like Christmas albums that aren't hokey and workmanlike, and if you appreciate truly artistic and vibrant orchestrations, you will quickly come to love this fine recording.
Forget Amazon's limit of five stars for ratings -- this one gets ten stars from me.

Retro rules!.......2004-12-15
Steve and Eydie rock! Their martini-lounge arrangements are truly timeless, and just the antidote to what ails us in 2004. Every song is a delight and a pleasure. And the CD even has two bonus tracks! Buy it, play it, love it, and share it. I personally don't see how I ever spent so many Christmases without it. Ho-ho-ho!!!

Brilliant 1940's music.......2003-10-31
Despite this being a budget release, the sound quality is good (not always perfect) and there are some liner notes that include they year in which each track is recorded - the dates range from 1939 to 1951. This double CD was originally released as two separate budget CD's (one, like this collection, titled That Christmas feeling and the other titled Winter wonderland) and you will find some songs appearing twice, but with a different singer on each CD. I counted nine such songs but I don't mind this duplication. Why should I complain at getting both the Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra versions of White Christmas?
Bing Crosby, the Andrews sisters, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Doris Day, Perry Como and Nat King Cole account between them for a substantial number of the tracks included here but that's how it should be - but there are plenty of other singers and bands represented here.
Apart from those already mentioned, there are several other great ladies of the era here. Ella Fitzgerald sings Santa Claus got stuck in my chimney. Peggy Lee swings nicely on Winter weather, backed by Benny Goodman. Britain's Anne Shelton sings a beautiful version of Merry Christmas. Child star Deanna Durbin sings O come all ye faithful and Silent night. Margaret Whiting is not represented by a solo recording, but she and Jimmy Wakely sing a great version of Silver bells.
Gene Autry gets two tracks - Frosty the snowman and Here comes Santa Claus, though his most famous Christmas recording, Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer, is not included, although two covers of the song are. Ernest Tubb's original recording of Blue Christmas is included. Other great singers and bands to be found here include Glenn Miller, Woody Herman, Spike Jones, Eddy Arnold, the Orioles, Dick Haymes, Guy Lombardo, the Boston pops orchestra, Vaughn Monroe and Russ Morgan.
If you enjoy 1940's Christmas music, this is essential.

That Crosby Feeling.......2003-12-16
The Best Album Ever!.......2003-10-08
It conveyed the best of the best. It was in this collection that Bing Crosby who, like no other, sang Christmas superbly, with arraignments and vocal interpretations second to none. The true meaning of Christmas was unmistakenly painted in music and I have never tired of hearing it, year after year. I play it many times during the Christmas season, and the pleasure of once again enjoying this album only increases with time.
I'm sad that this album is no longer generally available. It is possible to obtain the songs on a collection of Bing's Christmas music that was released a few years ago, but they lack the warmth attached to the inspired "That Christmas Feeling" compilation. Even though the songs were recorded at different times and probably at different places over a period of 15-20 years, "That Christmas Feeling" came very close to being inspired in the selections that were chosen, and even the manner in which the songs themselves were lined-up, and then recorded. There was a "magic" to it all. It seemed as if they were woven into a kind of Christmas tapestry. Whether this was intended or not, is for someone else to say. However, the magical effect is truly present.
Unfortunately, the magic is largely gone. You can get the songs that were on the album, but they are re-mixed and digitized, and therefore have lost a considerable amount of the warmth and personality that accompanied the original compilation of "That Christmas Feeling." Even though the album had technical flaws, these flaws actually added to the ambiance that was so important to us who grew up hearing this album. When the attempt to clear up the flaws was completed, there might have been improved sound in some respects, but sound in the selections now betray an uneven "texture" and lack the character and especially the warmth that should characterize the Christmas season, especially music that was sung by Bing.
I say bring it back, whether people buy it or not. Bring it back with the original cover (a darkened picture of a church) and with all due respect to one of the greatest talents of all time, notwithstanding his bad press and problems. Bing would approve and so would the rest of us who had merrier Christmases thanks to his genius, and especially when hearing yet again "That Christmas Feeling."
