Customer Reviews:
My Second Favorite Carpenters Album.......2007-01-27
I did not become a fan of the Carpenters until Karen had been dead for a couple of years. My first casette was "Close To You," followed by "Passage." Then I got the "Yesterday Once More" (television version) and "Voice of the Heart" on May 28, 1985. Two months later, I got "The Singles: 1969-1973." And after Labor Day weekend of 1985, I got this - my second favorite 'new release' recording of the Carpenters.
I think I liked all but one track on this album. It fires up great with "A Kind of Hush," a remake of a 1960s hit for the English band Herman's Hermits (they also sang 'I'm Henry the Eighth, I Am). The next song is a lush sounding 80s recording, "You."
Another highlight for the Carpenters.......2006-03-29
A Kind Of Hush is a fantastic album....Even though it reached #33 on Billboard 200 Album Charts...It did achieve Gold status. 3 singles were released "There's A Kind Of Hush" reaching number 12 on Billboard 100,"I Need To Be Love" reached number 25 on Billboard 100,and "Goofus" reached number 64 on Billboard 100......Oddly I Need To Be In Love did not reach the Top 10.That was Karen's favorite song she ever recorded..I have no idea why Goofus was released as single....They also have other standout tracks on this album like Breaking Up Is Hard To Do,You(a favorite of mine),Can't Smile Without You....MAKE SURE YOU PICK UP A COPY OF THIS CARPENTERS ALBUM
A Kind of Hush ISN'T a sleepy album.......2006-03-19
A Kind of Hush was released in 1976, and was of course, produced by Richard, and co-produced by Karen. Three out of the ten songs were written by their songwriting team. They include: Sandy, I Need To Be In Love,( Karen's favorite), and I Have You. Ironically enough, the popular title track, There's A Kind Of Hush, is a song Richard Carpenter is not fond of. He believes the synthesizer use was not the best, and isn't fond of it on most of their songs that used it. To me, the synthesizer is the charm of it. To avoid further confusion, if this cd were karaoke, it would say it on the cover. This cd will leave you with a strong awareness that REAL talent exists.
Kind of Hush.......2006-03-13
I ordered the CD laboring under the impression that it was a Karaoke CD and later found that it was just a regular CD. If you have the same CD in Karaoke, please let me know.
Carpenters- A Kind of Hush, The Most Underestimated Album.......2005-12-28
This is the most underestimated Carpenters album. First of all, the cover artwork is quite wonderful with its layered sunset look. The ten songs on the album are some of their best, too. My top five are: YOU, CAN'T SMILE WITHOUT YOU, I NEED TO BE IN LOVE, ONE MORE TIME, and my very favorite, I HAVE YOU, with its magnificent over-dubbing of Karen's rich, velvety voice, and Richard's right on the money arrangements. Some "fans" have bad-mouthed this album calling it "sleepy", but what were they expected? If you want to hear the greatest voice of the 20th century, superb arrangements, and songs with smart, quality lyrics, buy this cd. If the Carpenters had wanted a harder sound, they would have employed Mick Jagger to lead the group, but seeing how they didn't, it is unfair to judge them based on hard rock standards.

Customer Reviews:
This two-fer contains one good album........2001-08-30
A pair of 60s offerings from Davidson and I've gotta say that he is one talented singer. When he sings that is. The first album, "Time of My Life" is pretty darn good. Davidson proves he could belt one out with the best of 'em. The highlight is his rendition of "What Now My Love". He really lets loose on this cut, no holding back. You can hear the ache in his voice and it really is a great voice! "A Taste of Honey" would be another highlight because it's a great arrangement but Davidson flubs the lyrics. Instead of "sweeter than wine" he continually says "more bitter than wine". I guess he didn't care much for wine. But if the honey isn't sweet, why is he coming back for it? The song makes little sense this way. Where was the producer while this was going on? Shouldn't he have stopped the tape and said, "Hey John, wine and honey are sweet, not bitter". Oh well, it's still a pretty good album. The next album is called "A Kind of Hush" and not just because he sings the Herman's Hermits hit of the same title. He performs every song in a soft, hushed manor that doesn't always work. In fact, it rarely works and songs like "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" and "Georgy Girl" sound pretty silly like this. I can imagine that housewives in the 60s really got off on this album, but overall it's pretty lousy. (My apologies to the person who rated it 5 stars previous to my review.) I listened to it twice, the second time with headphones. It sounded even sillier the second time. So, as I was saying, when John really sings, he sings great. I wish the second album on this CD had been "My Best To You".
I've waited a long time for this one!.......2000-03-19
There are a handful of albums from my many years of collecting that comprise sort of a soundtrack of my life, and John Davidson's "A Kind of Hush" is one of those. Davidson is a singer's singer and a brilliant interpreter of great lyrics. Jack Gold's production of Bill Justis's orchestral arrangements is masterfully understated. Toots Thielmans' hauntingly lonely harmonica provides the perfect accompaniment for these intimate arrangements. As Davison explains in the liner notes, he enjoys singing songs quietly with guitar accompaniment late at night. "And something magical often happens--the slower tempo and softness give new meaning to the lyrics and a greater appreciation to the song." All the songs are wonderful, but my own personal favorites are "Today," "My Cup Runneth Over," "If I Gave You," "What Is a Woman?," and "If I Were a Carpenter." Recordings like this one never go out of style. I've waited a long time to see it in print once again. I hope it is available for a long, long time to come. Today's aspiring singers would do well to study the vocal stylings of John Davidson.

Customer Reviews:
The last decent album from Herman's Hermits with an equal number of bonus tracks.......2006-06-10
By now we are familiar with the fact that record albums from the 1960s (or earlier) were so short that when they are released again on DVD you will get either two records combined on a single disc, or the original album with bonus tracks. They took the latter approach with "There's a Kind of a Hush All Over the World," a 1967 album from Herman's Hermits, but with a couple of unusual twists. First, in addition to the original eleven tracks of the album there are another eleven bonus tracks (usually there are just two to five extra tracks with an album like this). Second, and quite strange, the eleven original tracks do not appear in their proper order at the start of this CD, which is what you would expect.
I have heard the argument that Herman's Hermits were to Great Britain what the Monkees were to the United States, and this fourth album could be the best evidence for fostering such a comparison. After all, "Saturday's Child" by a pre-Bread David Gates was recorded by the Pre Fab Four as well, and then you have "If You're Thinkin' What I'm Thinkin'", which was written by the team of Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, who wrote the "(Theme From) The Monkees" along with their hits "The Last Train to Clarksville," "I'm Not Your Steppin' Stone," and "I Want to Be Free." Then there is the sneaky suspicion that despite the credits on the album that Peter Noone (i.e., "Herman"), is singing but the leads but that somebody other than the Hermits are playing the instruments.
This was rally the last successful album for the group, the last one that went gold and which made it to #13 on the Billboard album chart. As was often the case in those days the album follows up on a hit single, in this case the title track, which went all the way to #4. But there two previous singles, "Dandy" (#5), which was written by Ray Davies of the Kinks, and "East West" (#27) are here, as well as another song that charted in "No Milk Today" (#35). But some of the other songs are of interest as well. Bruce Woodley of the Seekers contributed both "Little Miss Sorrow, Child of Tomorrow" and "Rattler," a pair of songs that show Noone could have been part of the British folk scene without much problem. The one original track by the group, "Gaslite Street," is in a similar mode. "Jezebel" is the song that stands out, because it is a hard rocker that stands out like a sore thumb, but is better than you would think.
This reissue from Repertoire, in addition to be remastered, doubles the number of tracks by adding the A and B sides of a couple of single, including "I Can Take or Leave Your Loving" (#22), some assorted album cuts, and four tracks off the the "Hold On!" album released in the U.S., "The George and the Dragon," "Wild Love," "Gotta Get Away," and "Make Me Happy." The middle pair of that quartet are also more in the rock mode than we are used to hearing from Noone and the boys, but the bonus song that you will do the big double-take over is "Biding My Time," which is actually a Gershwin tune. The original album by itself is at least a solid four, and these bonus tunes are worth another star. But then fans of the Hermits are probably just happy that the original albums are all out on CD.
Finally, if you want to program the first eleven tracks in the correct order, then this is what you need to program into your CD player: (1) "There's a Kind of Hush (All Over the World)"; (4) "Saturday's Child"; (5) "If You're Thinkin' What I'm Thinkin'"; (3) "You Won't Be Leaving"; (10) "Dandy"; (11) "Jezebel"; (6) "No Milk Today"; (7) "Little Miss Sorrow, Child Of Tomorrow": (8) "Gaslight Street"; (9) "Rattler"; and (2) "East West."
A Sixties Gem from Herman's Hermits.......2003-07-06
This record is an example of British Beat Music from the mid to late sixties at its best. Herman's Hermits typified a sound of that era that was very melodic, heavy on rhythmic guitars, with focus on delightful harmonies and impeccable arrangements (see Hollies, Tremeloes, Mindbenders etc.). All songs were originals, except for the frantic "Jezebel", and were written by the top professional songwriters of that era - G. Gouldman, Stephens-Reed, Boyce-Hart,T.Hazzard, R. Davies. What makes this record outstanding is not only the craft of the tunesmiths involved, but the marvelous arrangements. Just listen to the tasteful arrangement in "No milk today", a minor scale guitar intro followed by hard pounding bass and drums, and all the while Peter Noone's voice is counterpointed by exquisite harmonies, and somewhere in the background and the bridge some stirring strings and bells. Even the lyrics are intelligent, and it is a minor masterpiece. All the songs are terrific. The original album can very well stand up on its own, and adding the bonus tracks diffuses the unity of sound of the original. This record was from the later, "British",period of Herman's Hermits, after they stopped making American covers. It was also a time when melody had its last breath, and bands started turning psychedelic, including the Beatles. And then we had glitter rock, soft rock, hard rock, disco, new wave, ..., rap, hip hop. Hey, what happened to pitch, melody and harmony? Give me back the Fab Four.
Hush! - Herman's Hermits 1967 album finally available on CD!.......2001-02-25
Allen Klein, who owns the release rights to the entire Herman's Hermits back catalog on US MGM, has restricted his re-issue program to one "Greatest Hits" CD on ABKCO in 1987. For a group who sold more than 50 million records during the 1960s, it's a real shame that their original albums haven't been made available on CD in the US. Last year, however, saw the German Repertoire label release "Both Sides Of Herman's Hermits" from 1966 and the "Mrs. Brown" soundtrack album from 1968, both with several bonus tracks and nice digipak covers with informative booklets. Now Repertoire has done it again, with the release of the Hermits' excellent 1967 album "There's A Kind Of Hush All Over The World" plus 10 bonus tracks. Apart from the title track, which was the group's last top ten hit in the States, the original album also contained such gems as "No Milk Today" and "East West", both written by Graham Gouldman of 10cc-fame. The run of songs owes a bit to the "English whimsy" tradition of 1967, and if it hadn't been for the preconceived lightweight, teenybopper image of the group, numbers like "Rattler", "Little Miss Sorrow, Child Of Tomorrow" and the Hopwood-Leckenby penned "Gaslight Street" (the Hermits' own "Penny Lane") might have gathered cult status. Most noteworthy among the bonus tracks are the group's great rendition of "I Can Take Or Leave Your Loving", a Tamla-Motownish number also covered by The Foundations at the time, and the Hopwood-Gouldman-Noone-Lisberg collaboration, "Marcel's", for the first time available on CD. This is an excellent CD album, go and buy it immediately!

Gorgeous CD.......2003-09-16
I actually haven't taken this CD out of the player since I got it. In my humble opinion. Hyperion is the classiest label going; in fact, I'll buy Hyperion CDs even without being familiar with the singers, because I trust the producers. I saw this CD classified in the folk section at the library--but I knew better. Marie McLaughlin is a real singer, not a folk singer, and she does justice to these beautiful songs. I'd rather hear a classically trained singer sing folk songs than a folk singer sing anything.
a disappointment from Hyperion.......2001-06-21
I do not wish to be too harsh on this album...there is nothing glaringly wrong with it. My main quibble is with the title: "Songs of Scotland." These songs may well be "from" Scotland...but they are not "of Scotland."
The music on "Songs of Scotland" is great--as long as you are looking for very English, semi-operatic readings of these Scottish songs.
Mrs. McLaughlin (an opera singer) sings beautifully; but in the style she is most accustomed too. Mr. Martineau certainly knows his way around a piano and as with Mrs. McLaughlin's singing, I find no fault in his playing here.
My quibble, which may well be minor to some...was that I expected much more "Scottish" sounding renditions of these songs; in this regard, I was disappointed.
This disc is OK in and of itself...recommendable even...but consider yourself warned. Now you know what you'll be getting.

I wholeheartedly disagree with the review below.
I think Phil Ochs would be proud and honered to know that a guy like Ben Barnett has covered his songs. He stands for the same political and moral ideals that Ochs did and looks up to him as a huge inspiration. This album is excellent. I'd give this ten stars if I could.
Learn The Songs of Phil Ochs - but NOT from KOLS.......2005-10-21
Phil Ochs was a moral & artistic genius. And to see his efforts brought this low, is a travesty beyond recall. I highly recommend Mr Ochs and many of the other fine artists covering his songs. But try to stay away from these guys.

"Many of the songs fit existing Kind of Like Spitting tropes, but in almost every case there's something identifiably more mature or ambitious about them..."- THE WAR AGAINST SILENCE
"Smattered with raw feelings, get set for some serious self-contemplation after a deep listen. Despite everything, Barnett remains true to his emo-tions, delivering a compelling record and forcefully making it clear that he is not just a stereotype." - CMJ
"Ill-fated, over-the-top music for damaged people, but that's why it's one of the best records to see the light of day this year." - PORTLAND MERCURY
Like Weezer's Blue Album, One Hundred Dollar Room became the underground touchstone for a generation of young musicians who gravitated toward the dynamic mish-mash of punk rock, scorched pop and balladry. Suddenly, Kind of Like Spitting was listed in band descriptions, classifieds, and reviews as an influence on younger bands, not unlike The Pixies, whose legacy was the scattering of seeds and musical ideas to garage bands the world over. Recorded in June of 2000 at Typefoundry studios by Adam Selzer (The Decemberists, M. Ward, Norfolk & Western), the rights to this hard-to-find classic recording were recently acquired by HUSH for reissue
One Hundred Dollar Room was a watershed release for Kind of Like Spitting, cementing Ben Barnett's reputation as a musical auteur, able to ply his songwriting successfully over a myriad of styles while uniting them under the umbrella of an album with a classical composer's flair for dynamics, motif, and drama. That One Hundred Dollar Room sounds as fresh today as it did in 2000 is a testament to the both the staying power of Barnett's understanding of melody and his rare vision for dynamic song arrangements. The interplay of loud and soft textures on this recording, often in the space of a single track, are as dazzling to the accomplished musician as they are instantly satisfying to anyone in earshot. Considered by many to be the best release from that era, One Hundred Dollar Room is ripe for rediscovery on its fifth-year anniversary.

Customer Reviews:
Great memories but nothing Remastered here........2006-04-15
To call this CD remastered is a bit misleading. I would have gotten the same results by sticking a cheap microphone near the speaker of an equally cheap television set.
The songs and sounds of the Marx Brothers brought back great memories but the skips in the CD and the overall quality of sound was a bit disheartening. If you love the Marx Brothers then buy this CD for the memories, as for the quality, I would definately think twice.
If comedy were still like this . . ........2005-08-20
. . . it'd be much better than it is - well, if you've seen "Monkey Business" you know what I'm talking about!
This CD contains music from two of the Marx Brothers' early Paramount films, "The Cocoanuts" (their first) and "Monkey Business." Since these films were made in the late 1920s and early 1930s, the sound quality isn't the best (and the dialog occasionally carries over in the music), but considering that a CD like this is hard to find, it's certainly worth adding to your Marx Brothers collection. Not only do you get Chico's chord-smashing, finger-accented piano playing, or Harpo's dreamy, beloved harp playing, you get some of the Brothers' comedy bits from these two movies - such as their hilarious Chevalier "impersations" and the immortal "Why-a-duck?" exchange.
Just a tiny bone to pick: Harpo's solo in "Monkey Business" is actually called "I'm Daffy Over You" (written by Chico!), not "Sugar in the Morning" as the CD case says.
