5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Accessible and Packed with Music.......2004-05-02

I'm usually not a huge fan of the last five decades or so of musical composition -- too much cacophany and obscurity, as if any sort of recognizable theme were a thought crime. This album has helped me grow more comfortable with several composers I did not previously appreciate. It's not easy music, but it's a wonderful, relaxing, and quite melodic listening experience rather than an intellectual exercise. Some pieces, such as the Eldin Burton Sonatina, are now among my favorites.

As an added bonus, this is a long CD -- 20 pieces, taking up 1.3 hours to be exact. So you get a lot for your investment. There's bound to be something in there you like.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2004-01-29

This CD is beautiful and haunting! I highly recomend it. It is very relaxing. I found this CD here on Amazon by accident, and ended up ordering it after I listened to the sample songs. Order it! It's great! :)

Terrific value, both in playing time (CD 2 alone plays for more than 81 minutes) and artistic merit. Karajan's 1964 La Mer has long been recognized as one of the classics of the gramophone, and Abbado's acutely atmospheric account of the Nocturnes with the Boston Symphony Orchestra is scarcely less distinguished. We stay in that city for both the gorgeous Prelude à l'après-midi d'un faune (a voluptuously ecstatic performance from 1971 under the gifted young baton of Michael Tilson Thomas) and a ravishing Syrinx from the BSO's eloquent principal flute, Doriot Anthony Dwyer. And the pleasures don't end there: there's a live Estampes from the peerless Sviatoslav Richter, while the Melos Quartet of Stuttgart's version of the String Quartet can hold its own against any rival--as does a sublime, indeed inspirational rendering of the Cello Sonata from Mstislav Rostropovich with composer Benjamin Britten at the piano. By the way, it's a sobering thought to remember that the legendary Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli's crystalline, immaculately turned interpretation of the First Book of Preludes originally occupied one full-price CD on its own. In other words, if DG's selection appeals (and it certainly should), don't hesitate for a moment. --Andrew Achenbach

5 out of 5 stars The best, if not the most, Debussy that money can buy........2004-03-29

Clocking in at more than two-and-a-half hours of music by Debussy, this is one of the best collections of his music that money can buy. It includes definitive performances of his most popular symphonic, chamber, and solo piano works. Michelangeli, for instance, is known for, above all, his interpretations of Debussy. Gramophone magazine says of these recordings "Michelangeli subjects each note to the last refinements of shading and places it with hairsbreadth precision." Throughout their mature careers, Rostropovich and Britten were frequent collaborators in the repertory for cello and piano, including this very work. (Britten dedicated his solo cello suites to Rostropovich.) The Melos' recording of Debussy's String Quartet is among the best available, and better than most. Nearly forty years after it's initial release, von Karajan's 1965 recording of La Mer with the Berlin Phil has stood the test of time, repeatedly deleted and then added back to the DG catalogue. Though only in his mid-20s when he made this Debussy Afternoon of a Faun with the BSO, M.T.T. delivers a ravashing and colorful account. And so on. An excellent addition to the collection of either a classical music beginner or one with more refined aural tastes.

5 out of 5 stars A fine collection.......2003-07-27

This collection offers a very representative mixture of Debussy's works from orchestral, solo piano and chamber genres. However, I would offer two caveats. First, as to the La Mer, the Karajan performance is distinguished by the sensuous sheen he imparts to the music, but for a tarter, more idiomatically French approach, I would suggest listening to the Munch-Boston or Casadesus recordings as well. Secondly, as to the Michelangeli performance of the Book One Preludes, although impeccably played, this is a noticably deliberate and cold sounding rendition. For more warmth, flow and color, look elsewhere. Nevertheless, this set is an excellent introduction to Debussy.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Debussy.......2000-12-29

This is a wonderful Debussy compilation. The recordings total nearly 3 hours and give an excellent representation of Debussy's works. This is a great CD for people who do not have Debussy in their CD collection. Included in the CD are Debussy's "La Mer," "Préludes," and the masterpiece "Prélude á l'Aprés-midi d'un Faune." The CDs are perfect for putting on while taking a nap, reading, etc...

4 out of 5 stars A welcome addition..........2003-12-07

... to the chamber music catalog. Arthur Foote was a prominent Boston composer in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, much influenced by Brahms. He excelled at chamber music and I think these works are quite representative. For those who know and like his works, Naxos has issued a three volume survey of great merit. The Copland pieces will probably seem more familiar and are equally wothwhile. Boston is exceptionally blessed with classical music performing talent and these performers represent the highest standards. A solid recommendation for the more adventurous.

3 out of 5 stars Two Very Contrasting Composers.......2001-03-13

Copland and Foote are not very similar sounding when it comes to this assortment of chamber music. Foote sounds almost Baroque sounding at times while Copland is very distinctly modern.

You can sense the American spirit in the final movement of Copland's Flute and Piano Duo which is very good. The second movement is kinda dreary and the first is intersting indeed. The scales in the 1st and 2nd movement is what makes them so unique (even though there are two unique movement....ironic isn't it?). Much of the rest of the Copland works are soft but are experiments of sometimes seeming awkward chords to the untrained ear. But after a few listening, you get to like it.

Foote is a very interesting composer who I have not heard of until now. He has such a grand ability to compose simple melodies, but with great softness yet very out going. It's something that is only charistical of him. I recommend listening to some samples of his to get a feeling of what he is like.

The CD is something I don't grab all the time, but I'm sure glad it's there when I do want to listen to it. Very soothing but also demanding attention. I enjoy this light hearted CD.

2 out of 5 stars Good group, disappointing collection.......2007-03-27

I'm sorry I cannot endorse the enthusiatic reviews below.

I bought this CD based on the Baltimore Consort's fine, fun collection of Renaissance French tunes (La Rocque 'n' Roll") and my own love of traditional Irish music. Perhaps I have been spoiled by too many Chieftains CDs, but I found only one tune here memorable, or even interesting: Custer LaRue's rendition of "Catty (sic) Magee" in Gaelic.

If you like the Baltimore Consort (and Custer LaRue), get another CD of theirs. If you like traditional Irish music, try another group.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing music..........2006-12-20

Heard one song on the radio and I knew I had to have this cd. Firmly rooted in tradition, and yet surprisingly contemporary. You'll dance, you'll cry, the whole nine yards. What a gifted group of musicians! Wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2005-01-25

This CD is a great collection of Celtic music -- period. The Baltimore Consort has never disappointed with any of their collections; from the strong start with "The Mad Buckgoat" through the final notes of "Billy From Bruff," this one maintains the trend. I strongly recommend that this be part of anyone's Celtic music collection.

5 out of 5 stars Rich, lively and mysterious!.......2002-11-29

This release by the Baltimore Consort is a real treat for both Celtic and Renaissance music lovers! These are some of the best improvisers in the business. Combining wind and stringed instruments of the Renaissance into an English "broken consort", these virtuoso musicians interpret old tunes for a new audience, offering delightful melodies, blown, bowed and sung, over sprightly plucked accompaniments. Their sound is distinctly their own: Renaissance-based, but with liberal touches of folk, bluegrass and even a bit of modern jazz. On this recording you'll hear both spirited and wistful Irish tunes, which were gathered together in published collections from 1724 through 1909. Chris Norman's inventiveness on wooden flute, whistles, bagpipes and bodhran gives an especially Celtic flavor to the renditions. The Baltimore Consort has recorded many CDs for the Dorian label, and all of them are terrific, but this one is my favorite. Not to be missed! Try also "A Trip to Killburn: Playford Tunes and their Ballads" for early hits from the English dance scene.

5 out of 5 stars captures a sense of historic Irish humor, sadness and melody.......2002-01-27

Having just returned from Ireland this last summer, I listened to this CD with renewned interest. I felt that the music reflected the history and music that I experienced on that lovely trip. The Baltimore Consort is a talented and senistive musical group that does an exceptional job of bringing this Irish spirit through in this CD. A culture's music is often a window into it's people's soul and if you listen to this CD I think you will have a glimpse of the grand Irish character.

5 out of 5 stars He's one of a kind.......2000-10-12

Even if i did not used to take flute lessons from Mr. Chris, i would still be raving about this CD. A beautiful blend of the international music that has come to define his most well known style of playing, this recording is a must have. Having grown up in Halifax, Nova Scotia, but spent the last number of years living in Baltimore, Mr. Chris manages to combine the best of both worlds. From traditional Cape Breton reels to Scottish laments to the French music of Quebec and finally to the mastery of the great Turlough O'Carolan, he covers it all, leaving nothing untouched. He is supported by fellow Helicon member Robin Bullock (also an incredible soloist), as well as Ann Marie Morgan, and Pete Sutherland, and together they are brilliant. My favorite track is Rochester Schottische, but that may be because that is the first piece that Mr. Chris ever taught me. He is an incredible teacher, person, and musician, and this CD exemplifies this!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful interpretations of Ravel music.......2006-03-16

This double decker DG release of the Ravel Orchestral works with Seiji Ozawa and the Boston Symphony are first rate recordings. This was my first exposure really to Ravel as a child and have since amassed recordings of various works by great conductors of his music including Abbado, Boulez, Martinon, and Previn. This collection still remains to be a favorite of mine.

I suspect that they are a favorite of mine in large part due to the fact that Mr. Ozawa was fresh in Boston having recently taken the helm there in the early 1970's. They are light, dynamic, fast-paced, exciting, not to mention the incredible recording techniques of the DG engineers.

My favorites in this collection include Alborada, La Valse, Rhapsodie, and of course Daphnis et Chloe Suite No.2. What I especially love about this Daphnis is that Seiji did not opt out of the chorus for the suite like so many conductors do. It really adds to the impressionistic sound that Ravel was so famous for.

As a percussionist myself , i found the section to be played cleanly - and these recordings bring out all the nuances without overpowering. The section simply sparkles. On the whole - the BSO (in my opinion) really stand up to their European counterparts.

I highly recommend this set - treat yourself and pick it up.

4 out of 5 stars Everything is good but Le Tombeau de Couperin.......2001-04-30

I had never heard of Seiji Ozawa before I purchased this double-CD set. I can't say that I am awe-struck, but I am not disappointed.

This double CD has a great collection of Ravel's work, as you can see. My only complaint is the version of Le Tombeau de Couperin. At times it was as though the orchestra had trouble keeping up with Mr. Ozawa. Ravel liked to conduct his music at a breakneck pace, but I'm certain that he would have slowed down if he were extending beyond their limits. Other conductors that have done better versions of this piece are Andre Previn and Charles Dutoit.

    5 out of 5 stars A sequence of gems.......2005-07-06

This compendium of all of Charles Munch's Berlioz recordings with the Boston Symphony Orchestra is not to be missed, particularly as RCA's refurbished sonics, with some allowance for a few mono items, are deeply satisfying and the price is scaled to a beggar's purse. Both performances of the Fantastique, a Munch/BSO specialty, are included and both Romeos.
Exceptional singing from the likes of Danco, de los Angeles, Souzay and Valletti, among others, is on offer, and the BSO's first-deskers cover themselves with glory. This set is a valuable memento in particular of first flute Doriot Anthony Dwyer's playing. Perhaps it is useless to catalog some of my favorites here, but I can't resist reminding anyone susceptible to the unique Berlioz combination of elegance and drama of the Harold in Italy with Primrose as soloist, the Requiem (still my preferred version), the stereo Romeo where it strikes me that the composer is not loquacious and bombastic but eloquent, often terse, with not a wasted note, and L'Enfance du Christ.
If you miss this, you will be sorry, even if, like me, you already have some of its contents. A sequence of gems.

    5 out of 5 stars A golden album! .......2006-04-11

Debussy' s Prelude performed by Michael Tilson Thomas not only is superb performance of this well known Opus. I would rather to remark we are in front of the most luxuriant version ever made until now in all the musical story. Tilson Thomas sealed his name with Boston in four historical performances; the legendary and unexplainably out of print version of Stravinsky `s Rite of Spring; Carl Ruggles Sun trader, the majuscule version of Tchaikovsky `s First Symphony and this one.

Debussy ` La Mer in hands of Giulini is sumptuous, imaginative and profoundly engaging. Maybe if not for Toscanini magisterial interpretation with the NBC orchestra in the early Fifties, This would be securely, the most pyramidal performance of this magnum selection.

5 out of 5 stars Debussy Extravaganza! Giulini's 'La Mer' Resurrected.......2006-03-30

At last someone has had the foresight to gather these fine individual performances of Claude Debussy's masterworks for orchestra and released them at an unbelievably low price! And while the entire album is a treasure, the reason to obtain this recording as fast as you can is that finally Carlo Maria Giulini's definitive performance of 'La Mer' with the Los Angeles Philharmonic is once again available after years of deletion from the catalogue.

But back to this CD release. The opening work is 'Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune' as performed by Michael Tilson Thomas conducting the Boston Symphony Orchestra and this performance finds Tilson Thomas subtly restrained in the best sense of the word. He allows the short work to simply unfold naturally. He is graced with the famous flautist Doriot Anthony Dwyer from the Boston Symphony who will always be considered as one of the foremost artists of the flute.

'Petite suite (4) En Bateau' is floated with the inimitable charm that supports Ernest Ansermet as a Debussy interpreter par excellence and here he is in fine mettle with the L'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. Michael Tilson Thomas returns with 'Trois Images' again with the luxurious sound of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

But the piece de resistance of this superb release is the incomparably magnificent 'La Mer' as sculpted by Carlo Maria Giulini and his Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, a recording made when he was Music Director of the orchestra. Though Giulini is far better known for his Bruckner, Schubert, Mahler, Haydn etc, here he demonstrated the pivotal importance of this great Debussy orchestral tone poem. Giulini is famous for asking his orchestra never to give sound more than what is beautiful. In his vision of 'La Mer' the huge climaxes rise and fall as grandly as the ocean itself. Ever in control of the architecture of the work, Giulini brings grandeur to this piece that startles even the most devoted aficionados of Impressionist music. It is a performance to treasure and at last it is available once again. Highly Recommended. Buy it while you can. Grady Harp, March 06

5 out of 5 stars Berlioz's ambitious Op. 1 is well worth hearing.......2006-03-12

Berlioz was fired up by reading Goethe's Faust in its first French translation, and the result from the 25-year-old was his Op. 1, Eight Scenes from Faust. It deals almost not at all with the events in the Damnation of Faust, which would follow 16 years later. Instead, Berlioz set various dances and poems to music for chorus and soloists (choosing a different combinaiton for each scene). Even at this stage, however, his Faust music is evocative and sounds fully like Berlioz, if somewhat simplified. Various melodies that would appear in the later Faust treatment make their first appearance here. Since the composer withdrew the work soon after publication, recorded versions are rare. Neither Munch (RCA) nor Colin Davis (Philips) included it in their extensive surveys.

A charged-up conductor like Munch could make more of this music than the somewhat phlegmatic Dutoit. But as usual, Decca gives him gorgeous sound and the choral and orhcestral forces from Montreal are expert. Of the four soloists Susan Graham is the standout; her voice in 1995 was at its freshest. Everyone else is good to very good. The remainder of this 68 min. CD, roughly half, is devoted to individual vocal pieces that Berlioz orchestrated, including one song from Les Nuits d'Ete (interesting for being sung by a baritone rather than a higher femaile voice) and Berlioz's grandiose arrangement of the Marseillaise. In all, a very satisfying detour into Berlioz's minor works, worth a listen or two.

5 out of 5 stars It is really good!.......2005-10-04

I love my Faust CD, it is really good! But I'd really love to see Faust performed live, maybe if I still lived in the 18th Century when the music was composed(not sure if factual) I'd go and see it performed in person. But ohh well, who knew time machines weren't yet invented??

4 out of 5 stars Francophiles take note!.......2005-09-11

This is a recording meant to rejoice in the French spirit. Charles Dutoit leads Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, the Montreal Symphony Chorus, and soloists through a spectrum of works by Hector Berlioz that range from the sublime to the mundane. The juicy programming ends in a 'make the audience stand' version of Claude-Joseph Rouget de Lisle's 'La Marseillaise' for full chorus and orchestra!

Along the way there are 'Huit Scénes de Faust, for solo voices, chorus, orchestra & guitar' which benefit from the luxurious singing of Susan Graham, Suzanne Mentzer and some other fine vocalists. Dutoit coaxes a thoroughly French sound (!) from his forces and the result is ravishingly beautiful. Also included on this disc are lesser known works such as 'L' impériale, cantata for double chorus & orchestra', a mildly out of context excerpt from 'Les Nuits d'été' (Sur les lagunes) sung by a male (François Roux) which gives a different slant to the cycle, 'Le Chasseur danois, for baritone & piano (or orchestra)', and a lovely rendition of the ever-popular 'Plaisir d'amour' by Johann Paul Aegidius Martini effectively sung by François Roux.

It is a mixed bag but the good moments far overshadow the lesser ones. If for nothing else the collectors of Susan Graham's recordings will most assuredly want to add this CD to their collection! Grady Harp, September 05
