"We Were Alone And . . . I'm Singing This Song For You" .......2007-04-13
'Cause my love is in there hiding
I love you in a place
Where there's no space or time
I love you for my life
You are a friend of mine
And when my life is over
Remember when we were together
We were alone and . . .
I was singing this song for you." ~ A Song For You ~ Words & Music by Leon Russell
"Karen and I turned out to be the number one American-born hit makers of the 1970s and to date, with successes in every decade following our debut, our worldwide sales have topped 100 million units. Not too shabby for a pair of siblings from middle-class suburbia, who at first were more interested in listening to music than performing it." ~ Richard Carpenter, Liner Notes - June 2005 ~
Where were you when the Carpenters were so sensational and their songs were hitting the airwaves almost every hour? Where were you when their albums were selling like hotcakes?
Karen's vocal artistry is a pearlescent beauty full of luster, it's almost impossible not to be swept away by it and Richard has the exceptional creativity as a pianist, arranger, composer and conductor. With their extraordinary talents combined, they paved the way to many of their bestselling albums that contain their all-time hit songs. This 2-CD-set, "Carpenters: Gold" is a compilation of their most remarkable recordings - forty of their most-loved songs of all-time. My only concern is why an achingly beautiful song "I Can Dream, Can't I?" is not in this compilation. It would have been perfect if this favorite song of mine is included.
There are so many nice songs from this gold collection but the ones that particularly appeal to me are the following:
Disc One:
"We've Only Just Begun," "This Masquerade," "Superstar," "Rainy Days And Mondays," "Let Me Be The One," "Maybe It's You," "Reason To Believe," It's Going To Take Sometime This Time," There's A Kind Of Hush" "Only Yesterday" and "California Dreamin'."
Disc Two:
"A Song For You," "I Won't Last A Day Without You," "They Long To Be Close To You," "I Just Fall In Love Again," "Ticket To Ride," "Trying To Get The Feeling Again," "Yesterday Once More," "For All We Know" and of course "Merry Christmas Darling."
"Karen's Theme" is also a favorite of mine. It's a charming instrumental piece showcasing not only Mr. Carpenter's piano skills but also his creativity in composing remarkable music. He wrote the opening melody used for the biopic "The Karen Carpenter Story" in 1989, and he completed the melody, arranged and recorded this beautiful piece in late 1996 for his album Richard Carpenter: Pianist, Arranger, Composer, Conductor that was released in March of 1997 by A & M Records.
The above-mentioned songs are so powerful that they can penetrate your ears down to your heart to forever reside in there. They also symbolize an emotion gently and tenderly unfolding like the love growing in your heart.
You will most definitely love these CDs not only for the perfect set of songs but also for its 23-pages CD booklet with self-written Liner Notes by Mr. Carpenter plus the track listing with brief information of each song.
A heartwarming treasure.

This revamped version of the Carpenters' two original Singles LPs may, despite the absence of some Top 40 charters, stand as the definitive single-CD collection of the duo's hits. Included are most of the reasons Karen Carpenter's bring-the-pain vocals are still revered by thrift-shopping college kids and their moms alike. Despite the act's squeaky-clean image, Karen was of course more than touched by tragedy; at least one of the more hopeful of these tunes, "For All We Know," has doubt built right into its title. The best of this is smart, cry-in-your-Evian pop that sounds a lot less dated than it might in your memory. "Close to You" and "Hurting Each Other" are actually soulful claims on their then-new soft-pop tradition, while the towering "Goodbye to Love" is worthy of Rumours-era Christine McVie. Despite some duds, mostly from its later period, 1969-1981 makes its case for this enduring and sometimes classic outfit. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

Teach Your Parents Well.......2006-11-22
My older sister was a member of her high school homecoming court. She was asked to sing at the homecoming assembly and she chose to sing The Carpenters' version of "Sometimes." I learned most of my facial singing expressions from her and have always tried to emulate what she could do with her eyes. If you were around in the 1970s or 80s, you are probably familiar with "Sometimes." But even if you know the song, here are some uncommon things you may not have noticed at first. It is unusual for a pop song because it begins with no vocals and a minute and thirty second piano introduction, arranged and played masterfully by Juilliard trained Richard Carpenter, highlighting the thoughtful melody lines, with excellent chord choices & changes and ebbing tempos. Most songs have multiple verses and a repeated chorus. Karen Carpenter's butter-melting tones and heart-piercing ability to convey the thoughts & feelings of this song did not require repetition. The following lyrics are sung only once, then the song concludes.
"Sometimes not often enough we reflect upon the good things, and those thoughts always center around those we love
And I think about those people who mean so much to me, and for so many years have made me so very happy
And I count the times I have forgotten to say, 'Thank you', and just how much I love them"
Parents should consider the music they play around their children, because their children may be effected by it.
"And you, of tender years can't know the fears that your elders grew by
And so please help them with your youth, they seek the truth before they can die
Teach your parents well, their children's hell will slowly go by
And feed them on your dreams, the one they picks, the one you'll know by . . . and know they love you"
It doesn't matter if your parents came from the lush and pensive lands of The Carpenters or "from the lands of the ice and snow, from the midnight sun where the hot springs blow," if you listen closely to their music, you may discover magical things about them. And despite what Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young suggest, you may even learn to understand some of "the fears your elders grew by."
"How soft your fields so green, can whisper tales of gore, of how we calmed the tides of war . . .
So now you'd better stop and rebuild all your ruins, for peace and trust can win the day despite of all your losing."
Yesterday Once More.......2006-08-10
My mother, just like Karen Carpenter, passed away at a relatively young age; 38. Sometimes it's hard for me to believe that I have surpassed that age. I think what makes me the saddest about my mother's passing, is that I no longer remember what her voice sounded like. Unfortunately, a box of tapes that actually had my mother's voice on them got misplaced so I remember my mother through this collection.
And depending on the day, I sometimes cry and I sometimes laugh, but I always smile and remember those precious few years I had with the most beautiful woman in the world.

THE BEAUTIFUL KAREN LIVES ON FOR ETERNITY............2007-04-12
To review this cd collection is simple - short and sweet it has all the hits plus some added extras and the remastering is pure perfection. It seems that with every new collection that came out Richard tinkered with the orchestration, vocal intensity and the songs over time lost all their essence of beauty and power that was there when first recorded.
These songs are all great due to the wonderful arrangements by Richard, the excellent song selection but foremost the rare vocal ability that Karen possessed. Her voice was always so pure with open, honest emotion and an ever constant tinge of melancholy/sadness. To change this in any way denies us of the gift that is Karen Carpenter. Her voice is one of the best of all times. Perfection cannot be enhanced as those other collections tried to do.
These songs I can guarantee are the original versions remastered perfectly and it is very emotional to hear that voice come out so clear, so pure - the voice of an angel. These are the original songs in their original form as you remember them.
All Carpenter fans - this cd will be a dream come true. Purchase it and Karen will live on for you forever.

There was a time, before Karen Carpenter was born, when most American female popular singers, even the black ones, sounded a lot like the way she would one day sound. The music of singer-drummer Carpenter and her piano-playing brother Richard came to be called soft rock, but it's really just good, straight American pop. This CD, released in March 1998, is a collection of greatest hits, with a special emphasis on romance. Paul Williams, Burt Bacharach, Sam Lewis, and Victor Young provide lovely melodies, and Carpenter's expressive voice makes each song genuinely affecting. --Stanley BoothAlbum Description

The Lightning On The Horizon.......2007-01-21
The critical development, however, in this album was the Memorial Day 1970 medley of Burt Bacharach songs Richard arranged in Iowa. That sequence led to a 16-minute medley that closes out one side of this recording.
This CD is slightly better than "Close To You," but not enough to justify a higher rating. It has THREE top four singles - "Superstar," "Rainy Days And Mondays," and "For All We Know," and another strong recording, "Let Me Be The One." Two of the filler songs are VERY good - "One Love" and "Hideaway." "Saturday" and "Drusilla Penny" were not worth releasing except Richard's harpsichord playing on the latter is excellent.
And the Bacharach-David Medley of Dionne Warwick songs includes some of the best songs she ever released. None of these was ever a Carpenters single, but it showed their ability to do older songs in an original format. That talent would serve them well the next three recordings.
GOOD OLE DAYS.......2007-01-03
A Mixed Bag.......2006-06-02
"Superstar" and "For All We Know" were the other two singles released off this album. Karen does a fine job with "Superstar" but I never cared much for "For All We Know"? I am kinda baffled at how it charted so well too? It is just a "pleasant" song but I don't find the melody endearing and the Carpenters have so many better songs that flopped?
"Let Me Be The One" is such a memorable song and missed single opportunity, thankfully with Richard acknowledged and included this song on their 2CD GOLD Compliation which does not sound out of place. The melody of this chorus stuck in my head the first time I ever played this song- it is just that catchy. While it is a short song and very repetitive, Karen manages to hold your attention the whole way through.
"One Love" and "Hideaway" if sung by anyone else would just be passable efforts. Luckily, Karen manages to turn these pretty ordinary songs into something that is listenable.
Richard Carpenter's two contributions are the poppy "Saturday" and the bizarre "Druscilla Penny" with its weird Renaissance-esque intro. I might just be me...but I find Richard's singing voice just plain creepy! I can't quite put my finger on it, but I think he should have just stuck to the composing and arranging of their music! I skip these tracks...
The Bacharach/David Medley is interesting. Karen handles "Knowing When To Leave" amazingly well with its, as another reviewer mentioned, rapid-fire vocals. The problem the Bacharach part of the medley is that they completely changed the melody of such well known songs? I would love to hear Karen sing "Walk On By" the way it was originally arranged, instead Richard sings an unusual faster version which is ambitious and kudos to him for being creative...but it just doesn't really compare with how the song is meant to be performed.
The album closer "Sometimes" is just such a sad song that I find myself bawling my eyes out from the opening piano bars. When I first played this song I thought it was another of Richard's self-indulgent piano compositions with no vocals which he is so fond of...but I was patient enough to wait it out and eventually Karen starts crooning "Sometimes, not often enough, we reflect upon the good things..." Oy! You really have to hear this song completely to understand how true the words of this song are. Poor Karen sings beautifully and in such an under-stated way...
So, this album is a bit of a mixed-bag...some flawless performances by Karen...and some so-so songs...this was only album number 3 the Carpenters released and they really improved and got better with the following albums. They really caught lightning in a bottle. Listening to any Carpenters album is always a very humbling thing, knowing Karen has not been with us for all these years is such a tragedy...we still miss her. I think their music resonated with a lot of lonely and "just nice" people like me.

A Song For You.......2007-04-02
In their prime........2007-02-15
The Full Bloom of the Carpenters.......2007-01-25
"A Song for You" is, bar none, the best ever Carpenter 'first release' recording. Five songs on this recording charted, all of them going to #12 or higher including three top fives and a number one smash, "Top of the World." The recording was so good, in fact, that upon its original release in 1972, Richard Carpenter was not sure what single to release and chose "It's Going To Take Some Time This Time" to accompany the album. While that song did go to #12, Richard Carpenter later expressed regret over the fact that if he had been smart enough to release "Top of the World" instead, this album would have sold another million copies solely on the basis of that one song.
The recording was so good that songs from this album charted every year from 1971 to 1974. And even a couple of songs not selected for single release were powerful songs that later became Carpenters standards.
The album opens with "A Song for You," the Leon Russell composition that is the perfect vocal vehicle for Karen to emphasize melancholy happiness. It then launches into "Top of the World," composed by Richard Carpenter and John Bettis. This particular version is NOT the one that went to number one in September 1973. This is actually a 'softer' performance with Karen gliding over notes and a more relaxed feel. Personally, I like this version better. The song was released as a single after Lynn Anderson took a country version to the top of the country charts (#2) and after a delay of nearly a year and a half.
"Piano Picker," by then unknown composer Randy Edelman (he did the music to the 1988 movie "Twins" and other feature films) gives Richard a chance to sing a song that sounds autobiographical. Richard's vocal range is rather limited but his piano skills sell the song well. "I Won't Last A Day Without You" is the third (and final) chart song for the Carpenters written by Roger Nichols and Paul Williams (who also wrote "Rainy Days and Mondays" and "We've Only Just Begun"). It peaked at #11 in the spring of 1974, the last song from this album to chart.
Another Richard Carpenter piece, "Flat Baroque," follows, only this does not feature his voice but instead his magnificent piano skills. "Goodbye To Love," a song based on an unwritten tune in the Bing Crosy movie "Mississippi," closes out side one with a fantastic rock guitar riff by Tony Peluso. The song went to #7 in 1972 while this album was at its peak. "Intermission," a humorous thirty second bit, is the final recording on side one. Obviously a joke, this was never released as a single.
Side two opens with the song that preceded this album as a smash #2 hit, "Hurting Each Other." It was originally recorded by Ruby and the Romantics in 1967 but failed to chart. Richard found it listening to some old records and decided to record it. "Crystal Lullaby" is a sweet song with a magnificent choral arrangement using the Carpenters' famous 'overdub' approach. "It's Going To Take Some Time This Time," written by the famous Carole King, follows. Simple yet sublime, it goes to #12 concurrent with the album's release.
"Bless The Beasts and the Children" is a song from the movie of the same name. It was later released as a B side and went to #67 on the Billboard Hot 100. Never a serious chart threat, the song became another Carpenters standard, especially later when Richard included it on "Yesterday Once More." "Road Ode" was the weak finisher, a musician's lament on what the road does and how lonely it can be. A harp fade into an echo of the closing lines of "A Song for You" - the song that opened the album - closes it out perfectly.
The CD is absolutely magnificent. From the cover artwork - a major improvement over their first three releases - to the content to the vocal and instrumental abilities, this is the perfect Carpenters CD.
All Carpenters CDs are compared to this one. It is Richard Carpenter's favorite work, and if you don't want just a 'greatest hits' collection but want to hear the craftsmen at work, this is a highly recommended CD. Note the number of five star reviews it has.
The Best Album They Have Ever Released.......2006-03-29
A Pop Masterpiece.......2006-03-17
The contributions of guitarist Tony Peluso are worth special mention -- his stunning solo in "Goodbye To Love" marks the beginning of his association with the Carpenters and he would continue to prove his versatility (as DJ as well!) over ensuing albums. The remaster provides great sound and interesting notes by Richard.

Still Blossoming But With A Hiccup Or Two...........2007-01-25
I note a number of five star reviews, and I considered doing that myself. The reason I didn't can be summed up in two words: opening song. The opening song of a recording sets the stage - at least on a well-done album - for all that is to follow. The Carpenters opt for another Leon Russell tune to open the album but, unfortunately, "This Masquerade" - while a good song and done in fabulous Carpenter fashion - is just not the kind of tune to open an album. It segues into a number three hit, "Sing," from the TV show "Sesame Street" - the source of countless number one songs like "It's Not Easy Being Green."
We then get the first taste of Carpenter greatness with an abbreviated version of "Yesterday Once More" - and by abbreviated, I mean only the first verse and the closing chorus. Following the successful pattern of "A Song for You," we get another Richard Carpenter instrumental, "Heather."
The upbeat "Jambalaya" is another remake, this of a 1952 Hank Williams classic. But the Carpenters make it their own with a great performance capped by the traditional Carpenter overdub sound. "I Can't Make Music," a melancholy melody by Randy Edelman closes out the first side. Karen's vocal carries it well.
The second side is an ode to the oldies. Starting with Richard's new composition, "Yesterday Once More," the Carpenters go on a twenty minute tear of rock 'n' roll classics. They start with "Fun, Fun, Fun" by the Beach Boys and are interrupted by a 'hip' DJ (Tony Peluso, author of the "Goodbye To Love" guitar riff). It segues into "The End of the World," the Skeeter Davis Classic. Following are "Da Doo Ron Ron" (Crystals), "Dead Man's Curve" (Jan and Dean), "Johnny Angel" (Shelley Fabares), "The Night Has A Thousand Eyes" (Bobby Vee), "Our Day Will Come" (Ruby and the Romantics" and close out with a rapid fire acceptable version of "One Fine Day" (Chiffons). Interspersed are the DJ interacting with his audience including a 'Guess The Golden Goodies Group Contest.' The caller, Mark Rudolph, gets it wrong and the DJ mocks him.
The second side is, in its own way, a classic. Rather than a note-for-note remake of these songs, the Carpenters put their stamp on some of the classics and all of the versions are more than acceptable. Indeed, they make the album a must hear classic for all Carpenter fans.
The cover art is also, in my view, the best of all the Carpenter albums. You probably can't see it on the screen, but Richard is in the driver's seat and Karen in the passenger side.
Two smash hits and an entire side of Carpenter versions of classics? What are you waiting for? Get it today.
Short, but sweet.......2006-06-12
On the first half, there is the hit 'Sing', which may not be the greatest song, but it was a hit for a reason; it's very listenable. Then there is their sultry, jazzy version of 'This Masquerade', which is lovely, and predicts the direction their music will take by the end of the decade. The aforementioned instrumental, 'Heather', might be taken for filler, but it's actually very good. The upbeat 'Jambalaya (On The Bayou)', which was a hit in the U. K. and the Netherlands, is another fun, feel-good song, in true Carpenters fashion, themed around a celebration in the Deep South. 'I Can't Make Music' is a very good song about disappointment and lonliness. Then, there is the mostalgic mega-hit 'Yesterday Once More', which is beautiful, and bookends a medley of classics from the early 60s, including the Beach Boys' 'Fun, Fun, Fun', the Crystals' 'Da Doo Ron Ron', and the Chiffons' 'One Fine Day'. I think it works well, and it's great to hear those songs in the Carpenters' sound. For those who have suggested the existance and length of the medley imply that they were short on things to record, I'm pretty sure the medley was intended from the beginning. My only regret about it is that it is just that, a medley. It would be great to her them do the songs in their entirity, and maybe a few others ('Be My Baby', 'Up On The Roof', for example).
All in all, this is a good album for anyone interested in Carpenters. Good songs, great singing by Karen (Particularly on 'This Masquerade', 'I Can't Make Music', and 'Yesterday Once More'), and lovely backup arranged by Richard. However, be warned that the tone is pretty light and upbeat throughout the album, and if you're into slow, serious ballads, I'd check out Horizon or A Song For You, instead.
Great Remake of Classics.......2006-03-29

When the Carpenters found themselves with a sudden radio hit ("Close to You"), their record company put the pressure on them to come up with a whole album. The album's glue is, of course, the unabashedly sentimental and corny title track and the subsequent chart topper, "We've Only Just Begun." However, their lush covers of now-classic songs such as "I'll Never Fall in Love Again" and "Baby It's You," and Karen's tragic plea on John Lennon's "Help," contribute to the strength of this collection. The band toys with bossa nova sounds on "Love Is Surrender" and explores deeper emotional terrain on the beautiful "Crescent Moon." Close to You stands as a harbinger of the great things ahead for the Carpenters in the '70s. --Lorry FlemingCustomer Reviews:

The Start Of Something Special.......2007-01-21
Thinking I wanted the album but afraid to send a hard earned $11.98 for two records, I sent Mom with $6.34 to get this casette. And I was hooked.
The sequencing on the casette is different than on the album or CD and, in my judgment, better. It begins with a good roar, "We've Only Just Begun" and has two above average tunes, "Mr Guder" (a jibe at a former employer that Richard later regretted - but a fan favorite at concerts) and "I Kept On Loving You" (written by Paul Williams and Roger Nichols, composers of "We've Only Just Begun"), the best version of "Reason To Believe" that I've ever heard. This is followed by an attempt at the Beatles tune "Help!" that sounds like a completely different song. And that, of course, wasn't the first time as their first single was "Ticket To Ride" - and it, too, sounded nothing like the Beatles.
Side one of the casette closes out with their biggest hit of all-time, "Close To You." On side two, the first three songs are all right - "Baby It's You," "Love Is Surrender" (for which a video, rare in those days, was made) and "Maybe It's You." But the final three tracks of the album fall off the chart, particularly the last two, "Crescent Noon" and "Another Song."
So how do I rate the album/CD? Four stars. Why not five? Well in favor of the high ranking is two monster hits - a #1 (the title track) and a #2 (We've Only Just Begun), good orchestration, powerful vocals, and a noble attempt at making old songs sound new not once, but three times.
Yet it's not five stars because the end falls so flat as to be absurd. And the cover art is horrendous. This, in fact, would only be a three-star effort were it not for two major hit singles. Nevertheless, this is a good prism of what was to come in the next three years from the Carpenters.

Hipper now than they ever were in their day, Karen and Richard Carpenter achieved a rare feat: They saw one of their songs become a holiday classic. "Merry Christmas, Darling" sold like mad in the late 1970s and cemented the identity of the song with the band. In the wake of Karen's death, the lyrics became even more poignant, but isn't a good tug on the heartstrings what a lot of holiday songs are all about? The Carpenters' tender cover of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" is equally touching, their lush vocals layered like warm blankets on a cold December night. Though Christmas Portrait is harshly abbreviated, this version--the Special Edition--features almost 40 songs, including goose-bump giving versions of "Ave Maria" and "O Holy Night" and is definitely the better disc of the two. --Steve GdulaCustomer Reviews:

Rainy days and Mondays always made Karen Carpenter blue. Maybe she should have played her two Christmas records, Christmas Portrait and An Old Fashioned Christmas. Both are combined in this 31-piece collection, a great value for fans of this brother-sister duo who captured the pop airwaves during the early to mid-'70s. A number of good performances mark the collection, which includes songs from their Christmas TV special, numerous cuts backed by full orchestra that prove the duo could extend their pop sensibilities to timeless holiday fare, and singular works such as "Little Altar Boy," a song that Richard Carpenter feels was among his sister's greatest performances. --Martin KellerAlbum Details
