The Times Newspaper, Gainesville, GA
Listeners who expect a stereo-typical "Christian" sound may be surprised by the strong blues and folk elements in Weaver's songs.

Product Description
Arkansas reflects the true diversity that is Neal Leon Weaver, as it contains everything from 60s pop to 90s alternative sounds - and everything in-between. Neal's influences include The Beatles, Roy Orbison, Chris Isack, Sting, and Stephen Curtis Chapman. From the haunting melody of Beauty and Freedom to the quirky pop of The Ballad of Wendell Wright, this recording has something for everyone. Arkansas is also a very personal album for Neal as it explores both his emotions and his Christianity. Malynde’s Song is dedicated to Neal’s wife Malynde while Arkansas, the title song, addresses his father’s simple upbringing in rural northern Arkansas.

5 out of 5 stars The original was awesome..........2007-05-01

I had the original CD from the early 90's. This is still one of my favorite all time works of music. One song threads right to the next seamlessly. Great music to drive to as well. "Come A Long Way" always inspires me. I feel like I'm on the back of the bike riding with her around LA.

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking.......2005-09-01

'Captain Swing' showed a more confident, more experimental Michelle Shocked than might have been expected from the breezy official debut, 'Short Sharp Shocked'. However, that confidence all too often expressed itself as swagger. With 'Arkansas Traveler' it has matured to an easy assurance. In this fabulous collection of songs, Shocked seems to have a hundred years of American music at her fingertips, and to be able to combine any ingredients from that century to creat something that is both fresh and familiar. Not since The Band's 'Music From Big Pink' has such a stylistic gumbo been created with such zest and integrity. In her sleeve notes, the artist credits 'Minstrel Music' with being the inspiration - and in so doing does herself a disservice. The album is richer and more layered than the simple term implies, and carries influences from a far wider range of Americana.

5 out of 5 stars "Hey farmer...you been livin' here all your life? Not yet!".......2004-10-07

Back in the early '90's I became a fan of folk-rocker, Michelle Shocked after picking up a copy of the popular "Short, Sharp, Shocked". I loved that album as well as it's horn drenched successor "Captain Swing". But nothing prepared me for the release of her wonderful CD, "Arkanas Traveler". "Arkansas Traveler" is Michelle's homage to the 19th century musical form known as "Minstrel Music". Not many artists would have the guts to take on this music due to the racist manner (blackface makeup, derogatory humor) in which many of these songs were originaly presented over a century ago. But Michelle with both dignity and a really good sense of humor, tackled these classic songs of the American south, producing one of the best albums of her career. She gets plenty of help by being joined by a plethora of roots-music artists including the late Pops Staples, Taj Mahal, Gatemouth Brown, Doc Watson, Allison Krauss, Norman Blake, Hothouse Flowers, Uncle Tupelo ETC. With a group of journeymen such as these how could you go wrong? I love these tuneful classic songs, which can so easily get stuck in your brain. This happens everytime I hear her renditions of "Secret to a Long Life" or "Over the Waterfall". Sometimes I'll find myself singing these tunes for half the day, after hearing them. Other favorites include "Jump Jim Crow" (with it's Zippity Do-Dah ending), "Prodigal Daughter" & "Weaving Way". Finally there is the hilarious, spoken word routines of the song "Arkansas Traveler" ("Hey farmer... where does this road go to? Been livin' here all my life, it ain't gone no where yet!") I played these corny routines for my young nephews and it totally cracked them up into fits of laughter! For the longest time this CD was (criminally) out of print. It has now been re-released with crystal clear remastering and six bonus cuts featuring alternative takes and live renditions. I love this CD and highly recommend it!!

5 out of 5 stars Michelle has Come Along Way.......2004-09-24

In this repackage Michelle has included about seven bonus tracks notably Come Along Way. When I first heard this song live in hollywood Sept 2004 I thought it was a touching new song relevant to the hustle and bustle in my beloved adopted city Los Angeles. I joined her on her walk to recover her bike from the Repo Man and met the immigrant lady waiting for the bus, the boys gaily standing in windows naked, the bridge we seldom cross in La. You know which one. before she sees the repo man. Afterwords I felt as if I WALKED 500 Miles! I was surprised how good this 1990 release sounds today as if it was recorded and recovered intact from a time capsule. Michelle has one of the strongest clearest ballsiest voices in show business that you may have never heard. If you need to get up to speed with with a talent that rivals KD Lang, Carole King, Paula Cole, Etta James, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Joe Cocker, Bryan Adams, George Thorogood, Laura Nyro or Susan Cowsill to name a few. Stick out your thumb and Pickup the Arkansas Traveler, remember in her eyes we still have a long way to go and she will return the favor!

This was my first concert back in 1973. I got this for my husband for Christmas so he could remember that concert. Great music from the 70's.

5 out of 5 stars KICKASS CLLECTION of BOA.......2007-02-11

This is probably the very best "best of" to be released by anyone ,really.I would of liked "white-headed woman"& maybe "backdoor man"
included. But Black Oak had so many great songs you can't put em all on."Gettin Kinda Cocky"is another one.I could sit here and name off 2or3 cds worth of great songs they did.
This is for the people who never saw the band or know much of their music to start off with. But be careful. This band is HIGHLY ADDICTIVE!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars hot & nasty cd.......2007-01-10

i had a hard time finding the first cd i had of this band. i finally found it in wyoming when i was out there on vacation.
it is a very good quality cd. i will enjoy listening to it all the time.
thanks again for helping me find it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Single-Disc Best-Of On BOA.......2007-01-07

HOT & NASTY is a great single-disc best of on Black Oak Arkansas, arguably the funkiest, grittiest, most psychedelic band ever to come out of the South during the 70s. The band lacked the musical finesse of the Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker, the Outlaws, .38 Special, or even Blackfoot and Molly Hatchet, but made up for it with a nasty sense of humor that's good to equate teasing with, so the bully doesn't get any pleasure. The only thing wrong with this anthology is that it doesn't have "Strong Enough To Be Gentle", but that's a minor quibble. If you don't want to spring for the new double-disc DEFINITIVE ROCK COLLECTION, the fact that band members Jim "Dandy" Mangrum and Ricky Reynolds currently advocate sanctions against Indonesia in retaliation for that country's trumped-up 2005 drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist, as well as increased funding for law enforcement and stern justice for kidnappers, makes HOT & NASTY an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

5 out of 5 stars My boys My boys.......2005-03-25

What a bunch of wild styles. I grew up in the same Paragould/Jonesboro area as these young men did. They were "a little unusual" in a time and place where unusual was definately not embraced. We were pretty sure Mangrum was an alien but we could never find his spaceship. They first recorded under the name of "The Knowbody Else" These guys would smoke a joint and then go hang up side down by their knees in the trees of this old house they rented in Jonesboro. Of course right on the busiest street in town. They went down to New Orleans for a while and blended some of that hillbilly rock with some new Nawlens hot sauce. It worked. They changed some members (go Stanley) and the name and the rest is a party filled collection of the best simplified rock/party music ever made. I really love Flying Horse of Louisiana from the first Knowbody Else album, but that music pales to Black Oak's full force charge. Please experience their music in some form of altered state if at all possible.
party on guys cause you'll aways be..Hot and Nasty!!

3 out of 5 stars Check Out The Rhino Release!.......2007-03-28

As several have stated, the original lp and this cd contain a condensed program of the original show. BUT, Rhino's Handmade series is a numbered, limited, 2 cd set of two complete shows! Yes, it's 2 nights of Raunch 'n Roll! Some songs are repeated, but there's plenty of additional material exclusive for each night. Unfortunately, it doesn't look as though Amazon carries the Rhino release, but I believe it's still available at Rhino Handmade web site.
The remastering is quite good for what it is (Raunch 'n Roll), though I still prefer the sound of the orginal vinyl--hence the 3 stars. Forgetting the comparison to the lp, the Rhino edition is the best, and the one to buy!

4 out of 5 stars Kick-Ass Rock & Roll!.......2006-02-15

Thank you BOA for releasing this on CD! Like an earlier reviewer, I too saw them on "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert" back in the day and ran out to buy this album. This is everything a live rock & roll record should be. You can almost feel the energy emitting from this this live collection. Tommy A. was simply on fire behind the kit during these shows! The only reason I gave the CD 4 stars instead of 5 is because of it's length. I agree with another reviewer that they really should have added some tracks. Atlantic Records (this was originally released on their Atco label) MUST have some additional live cuts collecting dust in a vault from this tour. I own a lot of well done live albums from the 70's, but this one absolutely smokes from start to finish!

5 out of 5 stars BEST LIVE ALBUM EVER!!!.......2005-11-01

I was lucky enough to see these guys live twice in the early '70's and once in the mid 80's. Always raw, always wild and lots of fun! Jim Dandy Mangrum's antics on stage always a blast to watch. This release comes as close as possible to the energy of being there. Every song on here blows the studio versions out of the water! Southern hills party rock at it's best. HOT AND NASTY never sounded so good, WHEN ELECTRICITY CAME TO ARKANSAS, and HOT ROD are true gems. I've heard THE ALLMAN BROTHERS, LIVE AT THE FILLMORE EAST, hailed many times as the best live album ever made, but for power, energy, and pure kick ass fun, I believe this one leaves the ALLMAN's offering far behind in the dust. And that is not meant as an insult to the ALLMAN BROTHERS, I have the afore mentioned album on c.d., and enjoy it. It just doesn't live up to this one. The only flaw with this c.d. is that it comes in at only a little over 33 minutes. Short by today's c.d. standards. But then again, I'm not sure adding filler and fluff would have really been an improvement to an already great performance.
Thanks,
Tom

5 out of 5 stars Follow me and find - your way back through time!.......2005-07-07

"If you believe..." OK, I'll admit it, there was a time back when I was but a wee kid, that my idea of rock and roll was stuff like "Down By The Lazy River" by the Osmond Brothers. Then, late one night, a miracle happened! I saw Black Oak Arkansas on one of the old Don Kirshner or Midnight Special concert programs and it changed my life. And yes, 30 some odd (!) years later I still say that was for the good.

Raunch and Roll was one of the very first albums I ever bought (along with Machine Head and Band of Gypsies) and it still ranks as one of my all time favorite releases.

This album is everything that rock and roll ought to be - it's loud, rude, crude, and socially unacceptable (to borrow lyrics from a later BOA song). These guys rocked, they may not have been the most accomplished of musicians, and while you can call me a backwoods uneducated mutant hillbilly, I'll take the guitar tandem of Stan Knight and Harvey Jett over those two guys in Aerosmith any day.

BOA was one of the greatest live acts in rock history and this captures them at their peak. Jim Dandy set the standard for front men and, for those who may have only known of him from his days with Ozzy or Whitesnake (or Pat Travers, or Nugent, or Gary Moore, Vinnie Moore, Thin Lizzy, etc...) Tommy Aldridge's blueprint for his incredible drum solos was captured live here, first!

Tom Dowd's production was stellar and, IMHO, is one of the biggest differences between RnR and their later (and lesser) live album, "Live Mutha".

The only thing wrong with RnR is that it screams for a full blown remastering job. Not that there's anything wrong with the sound quality. It's just that RnR went Gold, the fact that it hasn't been re-released with bonus tracks is a cryin' shame.

5 out of 5 stars Alllllll Riiiiiiiiiiiight!.......2003-08-28

One of the great party bands of the 70's!! I saw them several times live in the early 70's and the energy they dispayed on stage puts many of the acts today to shame. They might not have been the "prettiest" bands around but for good old Southern rock, they couldn`t be beat. Rock on Jim Dandy and the gang!!!

5 out of 5 stars Discover a rich part of American's musical heritage & legacy.......2006-12-31

Playing time - 59:59 -- During her lifetime from 1867-1957, Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote a famous series of eight "Little House" books that trace her family's history through the west from 1867 to 1885. Published between 1932-1943, the books have become classics in American children's literature. Within her stories are references to 126 songs. There are songs from the parlor, stage, minstrel shows, church and school. Laura's guiding musical spirit was her singing and fiddling father, Charles "Pa" Ingalls. On this musical tribute, the second CD in a planned series of ten albums, we are treated to contemporary renderings of 18 of the 126 referenced songs. Recognizing the esteemed place that music-making once held within the lives of ordinary American families and pioneers, the set's producers and many participating artists are songcarriers who understand the importance of preserving music tradition. The Natl. Endowment for the Humanities has also taken note of the project, and they supported the 2005 release ("Happy Land") by including it in the "We the People Bookshelf" program that resulted in 2,000 copies to be sent to libraries throughout the U.S.

Two tracks (The Blue Juniata, Happy Land) on this second album, "The Arkansas Traveler" were previously released on the first, "Happy Land," that title cut which appears more often in Wilder's books than any other hymn and came to epitomize family strength and opposition to unruly outside influences. Different interpretations of The Devil's Dream, The Arkansas Traveler, and Oh! Susanna appear on both albums. Rather than just instrumental, this CD has narrator Ranger Doug providing dialogue from 19th century sources with "The Arkansas Traveler." And Wilder referred to an undocumented "Devil's Hornpipe" in the book so Butch Baldassari and David Schanaufer play "Devil's Dream" at hornpipe tempo in a spare setting with only octave mandolin and dulcimer. In a similar manner, Oh! Susanna features only Alison Brown (banjo, guitar) and Andrea Zonn (vocal, violin, viola).

In a sense, the concept albums are the books' soundtrack. Fans of the "Little House" books will especially thrill in being able to hear the music that was an integral part of pioneer life on the prairie. Vanderbilt University's Blair School of Music Professor Dale Cockrell recruited well-known mandolinist Butch Baldassari to co-produce the project. Top Nashville musicians enlisted to participate include Elizabeth Cook, Riders in the Sky, Dave Olney, John Cowan, Buddy Greene, Andrea Zonn, Alison Brown, Deborah Packard, Pat Enright, Doug Green, Keith Little, Mike Eldred, Nashville Mandolin Ensemble, Judith Edelman, David Schnaufer, Mike Bub, Pat Flynn, Bob Carlin, John Mock, Butch Baldassari, Peggy Duncan Singers, Mac Wiseman, Byron House, Blair String Quartet, Jeff Black and Jeffrey Taylor. Lyrics for the songs are available at www.pasfiddle.com

The result is a set of contemporary renditions of American folk music, a melting pot of hymns, minstrel show songs, spirituals and fiddle tunes. A 12-page CD booklet provides background about the songs and a few nice 1870s Currier & Ives print reproductions. One should imagine the days before radio and TV when music-making was a family activity pursued for fun, entertainment and education. For that same reason, families today will obtain plenty of enjoyment together with the rediscovery of classics, as well as new discoveries like "The Gum Tree Canoe," "Daisy Deane," "Roll On Silver Moon," "The Gypsy King," and "Bye Baby Bunting." 19th- century disc jockeys might've had program playlists that looked like these albums' repertoire. And in Wilder's books, it was always Pa's fiddle at the end of the day that helped the family get through tough times. A bonus track closes the album with a contemporary composition (by Stan Link) that brings an old singing/clapping rhyme song, "Pease Porridge Hot," back to life in our century as a perfect example of how the folklore tradition works to pass information, usually verbally, from generation to generation.

Wilder's eight children books inspired two television series - one that ran from 1974-1983, and the other which had a limited airing in 2005. With the CDs already issued and forthcoming in this 10-album series, we can all work hand-in-hand to help kids discover a rich part of American's musical heritage and legacy. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

5 out of 5 stars This stuff is SOOOO great!.......2006-12-27

According to their web site, they're going to do ten discs in the "Little House" series, which will be a truly wonderful thing, if they can keep the quality as high as it is on the first two CDs in the set.

I set up a reading circle with my daughter, my granddaughter and a couple of their friends, keep the discs cued up to the songs (if they're on the two discs I currently own), and it has truly enriched our experience.

As a music historian, I'm thrilled to death to see these songs coming back to life.

As with their first collection of label highlights, Hyperion's new two-disc collection provides a broad sampling of their exceptional catalogue and performers. Particularly rewarding are the selections from Beethoven (Scherzo from String Trio in C minor, op 9 no 3, performed by the Leopold Trio) and Thomas Tallis (Salvator mundi I, performed by the Winchester Cathedral Choir), but experienced and novice listeners alike will find much to enjoy on these discs. It's also a good value--more than 2 1/2 hours of music for less than $10.

5 out of 5 stars great balls of fire.......2006-10-24

jerry lee may be able to top this, but that it.

these guys have balls and great licks. i heard them in the 60s, so i'm prejudiced this way. but for that good crzy sounds and fun these guys are worth 5 stars. This is the album to get, it is tight and like SgtPepper, it holds up as one feeling of fun from start to finish. No comp comes close, or other album by them.

4 out of 5 stars groovin' hill billies...........2006-02-19

i am a long haired death metal country boy from arkansas, this is not my kind of music. but, i grew up listening to these guys. yes, Black Oak Arkansas is an actual small town on highway 18 in north east Ark., and as far as i know Jim 'Dandy' Mangrum still lives there. this is the bands' debut album, a great disc of country inspired rock blues, jazzy funk. 'Lord have Mercy on my Soul' is an easy choice for a fave', but i prefer the lively "Uncle Elijah," and the haunting "Memories at the Window." this is a milestone in rock music, don't overlook it.
in the early 70's when this album came out and the band was in they're heyday, BOA was often on television on NBC's "Midnight Special" on friday nights. on spur of the moment one night about 10 years ago i stopped in a local club late one night, a lean blonde haired dude in his late 40's was sitting in on guitar and vocals with a local band. when he came and stood next to me at the bar, i realized it was Jim Dandy Mangrum. here was a man who was once world famous, still looked like a rock star but had none of the arrogance.
get this album and enjoy one of the founders of southern country rock groove and boogie

4 out of 5 stars "UNPREPARED".......2005-07-19

Black Oak Arkansas (BOA) caught the Rock world unprepared for thier high decible blend of Rock, Country, Hillbilly, Rock-abilly.... Also BOA added a touch of history and spiritualism to their outstanding lyricism. They paved the way for Charlie Daniels, Leonard Skinyrd, Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Marshall Tucker, Alabama..... Well, BOAs contribution to an evolution within the Rock community puts them on the same cloud as Buddy Holly, and the Beatles. Cuts Uncle Elijah, and Lord Have Mercy on my Soul, are but two of the standouts on this album. No production values are missing, or lost. NOTE: BOAs "Singin' the Blues" track is a Rock update from the 1920s. One might say thier style is from all the right places in Hell. The evil sounding vocals - as yet unmatched - sound like Ol' Scratch himself.

5 out of 5 stars classic rock.......2004-03-14

I grew up in a little town not far from Black Oak Arkansas. I had brothers and a sister much older than me. I used to listen to this record as a little girl...very fond memories. "When Electricity Came to Arkansas" is a classic "Jim Dandy" tune. He was a great singer and a great personality.

4 out of 5 stars guilty pleasure.......2003-09-02

I first purchased this album on cassette way back in 1971 shortly after it was released. The main reason was AM radio was playing "Lord Have Mercy on My Soul" and it really captured my attention. Back then stuff like "Every Picture Tells a Story", "Abraxas" and Jim Morrison's death were the big thing but there was just something about these guys from Black Oak Arkansas.

This first album is pretty good and offers up some good ole southern rock and roll, but I kept going back to the standout song - LHMOMS. Over 30 years later that song still gives me goose bumps and probably will another 30 years hence...if I don't peel off that is. The song wasn't much more than a minor hit and quickly faded into, obscurity. However, BOA later went on to make piles of money with "Jim Dandy to the Rescue" which put these guys and the town they came from (about 600 people?) on the map. And as they say: "the rest is history."

Shortly after the release of this self titled album I was turned on to the likes of Yes, ELP, Pink Floyd, Tull and a host of other prog rock royalty. But for what its worth, this album, pure and simple as it is will always be one of those guilty pleasures that makes rock music such an enjoyable experience.

Have yourself a little fun, its Jim Dandy!

"Definitive" is the key word for this collection. It pulls together the best album cuts along with the BOA signature tunes. A collection well worth waiting for.

2 out of 5 stars Infuriating!.......2007-04-11

The biggest idiots I've ever heard except for Rappers of course. This is a band that could have been a great band if it wasn't for the goofy vocalist botching and making a joke out of everything. The musicianship is definately there, excellent musicianship, but comic book lyrics and vocals trash it all! After a few songs of this, the humor gets old real quick. It's sad to see such gifted Southern musicians live up to an outdated stereotype played out by a childish vocalist who thinks all of life is a joke. If it wasn't for this, and they had gotten a real vocalist to sing the songs seriously, they probably would have been as big as Lynyrd Skynryd, and their musicianship gives strong evidence of what should have been, instead of them being reduced to dime store novelty status! Thank god that Lynyrd Skynyrd, Ozark Mountain Daredevils, and Molly Hatchett got it right, and did the South proud with some dignity!

5 out of 5 stars The Best BOA Collection Yet.......2007-01-06

THE DEFINITIVE ROCK COLLECTION is a wonderful double-disc anthology of Black Oak Arkansas, featuring songs from throughout their career as one of the funkiest, grittiest, most psychedelic bands ever to come out of the South. This band provided the blueprint for such 80s street-metal bands as Guns N' Roses, L.A. Guns, Motley Crue, and Junkyard. True, BOA lacked the musical finesse of the Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Marshall Tucker Band, the Outlaws, .38 Special, or even Blackfoot and Molly Hatchet, but they made up for it with an absolutely wicked sense of humor that's good to equate teasing with so that the bully doesn't get any satisfaction. The fact that lead singer Jim "Dandy" Mangrum and guitarist Ricky Reynolds currently advocate sanctions against Indonesia in retaliation for that country's trumped-up 2005 drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist, as well as increased funding for law enforcement and stern justice for kidnappers, makes this anthology an essential prchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

5 out of 5 stars The best BOA collection yet!.......2006-10-27

The odds are that, if you're even looking at this release, you're already a BOA fan. The question then is, why buy yet another compilation cd of their music? I strongly suggest that, even if you own all their other available cds, you still need to buy this one!

If you're not already a fan, then this is definately the best starting place for an introduction to the music of those rebel hillbillies known as Black Oak Arkansas!

Here're some reasons why:

1. This is simply the best collection of BOA music available in any given package, period. By way of comparing "products", I'll suggest that this release gives a more comprehensive overview of this band than the Definitive Rock release for Foghat (which is pretty good in it's own right, but the BOA is better!).

2. This is the only place (so far!) where you can get any cuts from the "X-Rated" lp.

3. Other than the pic on the front cover, the rest of the pictures in the booklet are ones I'd never seen before. The liner notes are ok, but it would've been nice to have new quotes from the actual band members.

4. Let's face it, this is also about Respect. BOA never got any and just the fact that Atco/Rhino made the effort to put this collection out is a great thing for the band and us as fans.

It occurs to me that the label will be watching the sales figures on this release and those figures may come into play when they make decisions about future releases of BOA material. I'm still hoping for both an official release of X-Rated and, the Holy Grail of BOA music, a remastering of Raunch N Roll which would also finally include previously unreleased bonus cuts.

Also, the last picture inside the booklet is of the band in the Black Oak era...maybe an indication that RWTD might also, at long last, be in consideration for release?

A boy's got to dream!

So all you OakHeads unite, do your part and buy this release!

PLEASE, keep the faith, we NEED it!

(EDIT: 3/28/07 - Dreams do come true and the Holy Grail has been found! Rhino Handmade has done the full-blown remaster treatment on Raunch N Roll and has just released it on their Rhino Handmade label. Two full discs covering the full two shows from which the original RNR was culled. Excellent packaging, liner notes from JD & Rickie Lee, and two full discs of the best rock and roll ever produced! Get yours fast as it's a limited production run of 5000!)

5 out of 5 stars No Fat Here, Plenty of Hog!.......2006-12-21

Well, I gotta tell ya...I've got every Black Oak Arkansas album ever put out but I would definitely say that High On The Hog is the Crown Jewel. It has the most flavorable tunes to croon to and sums up the spirit of what this band was all about. Dirty's driving bass lines opens several of the songs here and only wets your appetite for the diverse intertwining solos of their triple guitar attack. Plenty of wah wah petal, slide and even some finger lickin acoustic that makes you wanna run out and buy a cabin and a 100 acres of land to live the life that these lyrics convey. Damn, what can I say, listening to High On The Hog just makes you feel good and alive! Who but BOA could come up with song titles like Swimmin In Quicksand and Moonshine Sonata. The latter is a great instrumental with intertwining solos that bleed emotion with every note picked. Back To The Land and High 'N' Dry have a down home country feel to it....you can just picture these guys playing this on the front porch of their Ozark cabins. If you want to hear what crooning is all about, then the Dandy will pour it on you during High 'N' Dry. Happy Hooker is a real cooker and has a strong slow bluesy rhytmn to it and the lyrics are just a hoot. This is foot stompin music at it's finest. Movin and Red Hot Lovin are very fast, upbeat and powerful songs. The order of the songs on this album are perfect...I think this is why this release just simply knocks my socks off. It's also produced by Tom Dowd, you know. Folks, there simply is not a bad tune on this one! To me, it is the definitive Black Oak Arkansas album and truly one of the great classic rock albums of the early 70s. You'll love the album cover and you'll want to run out and buy you a washboard and croon along with the Dandy. After that, just run to the highest peak in the Ozarks you can find and yell...Go Jim Dandy, Go! After 30 years of listening to this, all I can say is "Why Shouldn't I Smile, So Many Happy Miles".

4 out of 5 stars great southern rock.......2006-01-11

This is a good album by a good band. Black Oak has got to be one of the best and unique sounding southern rock bands ever. They combine elements of rock, country and boogie together. The singer is one of a kind, you either love his voice or hate it there is no in between. It's scratchy with a little southern flavor thrown in. Anyways on with this album. It has great rock /boogie tracks like swimming in quicksand, mad man, jim dandy and red hot lovin. It also has a couple of nice country sounding songs like back to the land and high an' dry. Overall this is a good cd so if you like southern rock you will surely like these guys.

4 out of 5 stars Jim Dandy is a Ras-cewl! .......2005-06-01

Now, some of y'all don't know I got me a lil' ol' man who fronts a tribute band to Zeppelin and Black Oak Arkansas called Stariway to Arkansas. He legally changed his name to Jimbob Dandyplant after enought folks done told him he looks like the other two. He's got himself long blond hair, eyes of blue, and a swimmer's body just like them before Jimmy and Robert done turned into 50 year-old fatsos with Just for Men blond hair.

Ana-hoo, I don't think he respects me much, although I dress up like his idol's old girlfriend Ruby Starr. He done caught me at the edge of the stage singin' "Jim Dandy is a ras-cewl" and stopped the band to scream at me in front of everybody in the club. "It's Jim Dandy to the rescue, ya bimbo!" Everybody laughed while I cried, but I still kept dancin' 'causin' that song rocks my booty off. Unfortunately, he dedicated "Happy Hooker" to me after we *made up* during first break, but I jez can't get enough. How can you say no to a dude who likes a band that paved the way for the likes of George Thoroughgood, the Georgia Satellites, Aerosmith, and David Lee Roth, only to be left behind as a footnote in rock history while their avid students reaped the glory they themselves still deserve?

I think about great, ballsy blues numbers with the cherry bomb of funk thrown in, and can't deny the infectiousness of "Movin'," and the almost metallic kiester crunch of "Mad Man," and the words highly underrated come to mind. True, Jim Dandy Mangrum was never a fantastic voice, but I'll be gosh-durned iffin' he didn't have as much carnal appeal as that cross dresser from Van Halen who stole everything he knows from him. An' besidin' all of that, what's a whiskey burned voice with the right 'tude when it's accompanied by three great axe-slingers, a hell of a drummer in Tommy Aldridge--who's played for everyone and their bros--and some good old southern blues and country roots funkified?

I'm still at a crossroads, y'all. Jimbob Dandyplant caught me at home with all three gee-tarists from a Skynyrd tribute band called Jacksonville Kid. Looks like I'm "Swimmin' in Quicksand." Funk-ay!

If you want better sound get their debut release or Keep the Faith. In those days live performances were notorious for poor sound quality. They were also known for Great Natural Performances from the Great Touring Bands, like BOA,Grand Funk Railroad,ZZ Top to name a few.

2 out of 5 stars sound quality ??????.......2006-06-30

the songs are good tunes but the sound quality is not very good. on some tunes you can hardly hear the guitar that is muffled by the bass.in fact the entire cd sounds muffled. i would go with raunch & roll before this one

5 out of 5 stars Black Oak Arkansas At Their Peak.......2005-03-20

I actually was at the Long Beach Arena where this concert was recorded on Mother's Day 1975. I remember it fondly as one of the best live shows I ever saw. The crowd couldn't get enough of them and brought them back for multiple encores. This, in my opinion, could have easily been a double album or CD. This was when this band was at it's peak and was one of the top party bands going during the 70's. They could have played all night or until they ran out of songs before anybody had left. The 70's were the time of all the great hard rock and long hair bands and Black Oak Arkansas had to definitely be included among the best of their time. If you would like to hear only a sample of what this band could produce live on stage this is the Cd to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars THE MUTHALOAD.......2004-11-29

If you have a house full of sh*tkickers, and your beer is disappearing from the fridge, and they're starting to make bathtub gin in the outhouse, and your next door neighbor is with the County Sheriff's Department, don't put this CD on the stereo. You'll never get 'em to leave. And granny will tan your hide in the woodshed with a switch.

Hmmmm... ON SECOND THOUGHT, TURN THIS UP REAL LOUD, SO'S THE NEIGHBORS WILL COMPLAIN, YA'LL.

THIS IS HILLBILLY GRUNGE AT IT'S FINEST.

Been looking for this to come out on CD for 13 years. Thank God for BOA. They changed my life.

The raw side of Southern Rock. This cd captures the energy of the band's live performance. Having seen them a number of times, it does not disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars The essence of Southern Fried Rock-N-Roll!!!.......1998-10-30

If you enjoy rock-n-roll of any form or fashion you have to buy this recording. This is everything that is rock-n-roll....loud, raw, raunchy, uncomplicated, hard, fast and just plan good! This recording epitomizes the popular live recordings of the rock bands during the 70's with a superior sound quality and everything. Black Oak Arkansas was at its peak when they recorded this one, you can feel the legendary front man a.k.a. Jim Dandy belt out lyric after lyric and just imagine how he pranced on stage giving his soul to the audience. I LOVE THIS RECORD!!!
