...Highly Recommended.......2002-05-13
If you haven't seen the movie Mrs. Soffel, don't bother the music clearly out shines the movie...Lyle Mays on piano is amazing and expect lots of penny whistle, synthesizers and being that the setting takes place in Pittsburgh, the industrial sounds of a steel mill. The "Times Of Harvey Milk" is just under 9 minutes, it never gets a chance to mold into anything other than sounding alright. What ever fault there may be with "Times Of Harvey Milk" it was an important score for him to score because of him growing up in the San Francisco area, the main focally point in the documentary...Times Of Harvey Milk went on to win a Academy Award for best documentary. And lastly "Never Cry Wolf"...wow, thats what made me run out to buy the c.d in the first place. You could not ask for a better score to compliament the wintery terrain of Alaska. Although very somber through out the most part, there is a brief moment that will raise a few hairs on the back of your neck...my favorite part of the score, lots and lots of drumming.
What more can I say, just run out and buy it...highly recommended.
Magnificent, undiscovered Lyle Mays.......2001-06-24
The CD was a revelation, for two reasons. First, there was much more 'Mrs Soffel' music than the extract had led me to expect. And second, the compilation never mentioned the fact that the pianist behind the glorious playing was none other than my favourite, Lyle Mays. (Unfortunately the CD notes misspell his name as 'Mayes'.) The piano is beautifully simple, but it is among the best Lyle has done, inside or outside the Pat Metheny Group.
I have subsequently seen the 'Mrs Soffel' movie (starring Diane Keaton), and to be frank, it was a disappointment. My expectations had been raised sky-high by this CD, which is marvellous. The elements of the Isham music are spread across the movie, perhaps too thinly, and Isham does a great job of bringing them altogether into a 14-minute symphony.
'Harvey Milk' does nothing for me, but track #3, 'Never Cry Wolf', just leaves me pining to see the Disney film. It sounds arctic, wintry, sparse, and menacing.
All three tracks show that Isham is not just a top-flight musician but also a fine composer.

Album Description
Nobody believes a liar - even when they're telling the truth. When a young woman is found murdered, a group of local high school students decide to further scare their classmates by spreading online rumors that a serial killer called "The Wolf" is on the loose. By describing "The Wolf's" next victims, the students' game is to see how many people they can convince - and if anyone will uncover the lie. But when the described victims actually do start turning up dead, suddenly no one knows where the lies end and the truth begins. As someone or something begins hunting the students themselves, the game turns terrifyingly real.Produced by Doug Liman, The Bourne Identity, Swingers, Go.

Album Description
Combining some of the heavier sounds of alternative rock with infectious pop hooks, Bernadette has developed a sound unlike her peers. Guitarist Rich Gaglia and drummer John DiGiulio (of the NYC-based band Psych!), joined her in the studio to craft this genre-hopping collection of songs. The title track and "Full Moon Curse" have been featured on NBC's "Passions" and the opening track "Walk On By," is featured in the new indie film, "Just Add Pepper." "House of Straw" was featured on the nationally syndicated radio show Net Music Countdown when Bernadette was the show's spotlight artist.

Five Stars for the Dark Star.......2005-04-12
It's taken altogether too long to discover the music of Bernadette McCallion. As you listen to this album, you become aware that long-shut doors are opening in your mind. Her voice strikes you first, naturally: it's clear but ethereal, haunting but as immediate as a whisper. The arrangements weave a complex collection of instruments into a seductive web of sound that allows each to be heard but the whole to be enjoyed as a beautiful blend. It's a clever recipe, which mixes ambient rhythms, indie, a suggestion of funk and a voice as delicate as a crystal rose into a truly tasty dish. And then you start to hear the lyrics.
The music doesn't overwhelm Bernadette's voice, nor does she screech to make herself heard. As the implications of her wonderfully-crafted songs sink into your consciousness you begin to realise that this woman has the ability to put into song the emotions of the city, to explain everything that the young, the old, the lost, the shallow, the vulnerable, the involved and the outcasts have ever felt - and are feeling.
The quite lament of the lost and solitary (Walk On By - not the Burt Bacharach/Dionne Warwick song, a long way from it); blaming herself for being too close and controlling (the title track, Cry Wolf); the seductive emptiness of the promises of wealth, power and simply being spoken to (House of Straw) - Bernadette McCallion has her finger on the pulse of contemporary life.
This is an astounding, fantastic album. Buy it. Buy two copies and give one to a friend. By a third, in case you need a spare. We want to hear more from this outstanding talent.
The work she's done with Pitch Black Dream is pretty good, too.
Ruari McCallion (no relation - simply coincidence!)
