Rick Nelson - The News Tribune, September 4, 1998

"Sweet and sour. Rough and smooth. Loud and soft. Sometimes contrasts make us appreciate each of the components more than we would if they were presented by themselves.

Case in point, the recent CD "The Smallness That We Are" by Tacoma's Groovy Times In Babylon . . . The album generally follows a pop-rock formst, but the music is edgier than pure pop and some of the lyrics have a dark, even dour, quality.

According to Groovy Times guitarist and singer Regan Barger, the contrast is a natural extension of the band's influences." ...

"Some of the tunes, which were written be Barger and Hartman, are reminiscent of the group Crowded House, which also juxtaposed cheerful tunes and serious lyrics. Is that fair comparison?

'That's it,' Barger said. 'Elton John was real good at doing that, too, like 'Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me'. I like that kind of thing, the push and pull. It's so happy, but then when you listen to the words it's got a more serious theme. Crowded House is an example of taking the pop-rock form, say the Beatles, and stretching out ot make it your own. As we continue to write, I hope that pop-rock sound will continue to come out.'"
