You really can't have a supergroup without superstars, but the Yayhoos are pretty close to the real thing--at least in the roots-rock world, where guitarists Dan Baird and Eric "Roscoe" Ambel are noted heavyweights. Baird, the former Georgia Satellites frontman, takes the lead vocal on half a dozen tracks, including "Oh! Chicago," which previously appeared on the Bloodshot Records fifth anniversary compilation Down to the Promised Land. A veteran of Roscoe's Gang and the producer of albums by Blue Mountain, the Bottle Rockets, and others, Ambel sings two tunes on Fear Not the Obvious and had a hand in penning one of the disc's highlights, the brawny rocker "What Are We Waiting For." But the greatest contribution from Ambel, a sought-after sideman on the six-string, is the avalanche of greasy guitar he unleashes throughout. To hear the Yayhoos tell it, music history starts with the Stones and ends with Skynyrd, and in this case that's a fine excuse for a party. --Anders Smith-Lindall

Album Description

These guys bring it on. Some folks may not like the loud guitars and swaggering attitudes but that's their loss. I swear I haven't rocked this hard since "Street Survivors." Even though "Fear Not the Obvious" doesn't have dueling guitar solos, the rocking songs more than make up for it. That song where they tear Hank Jr. a new one is pretty good too.

5 out of 5 stars Fear not the mojo.......2006-08-09

These guys are so good. There isn't a bad track on this disc. The singer of the Georgia Sats, the brilliant production and guitar work of Eric Ambel ( ex Delords, present lead on Steve Earle ). Run don't walk and dig the vibe. They cover "Dancing Queen" better than Abba.

5 out of 5 stars It keeps getting better !.......2005-06-18

This is an album that keeps getting better by the years, I tell you. The first times I listened to Fear Not the Obvious the stand out tracks were What Are We Waiting For & Oh! Chicago. And the rest of the songs were pretty ok. Not more.

But now with a few years on its neck, this album is a killer! Monkey With a Gun, Bottle and a Bible, Hunt You Down, Get Right With Jesus and Baby I Love You are all stand outs. The only song that doesn't work for me are the Abba cover Dancing Queen.

The Yayhoos have over the years proven to be one of my favourite Alt. Country rockbands. They are up there with Drive-By Truckers, Slobberbone, Bottle Rockets, Uncle Tupelo and Son Volt.

5 out of 5 stars ROCKIN!!!.......2004-04-25

Without a doubt this is, hands down one of the best discs you will ever purchase, being a long time fan of Eric(Roscoe) Amble from the days of the "Laughing Gnomes" to the the "Del Lords" and "Bottle Rockets" you can only expect a quality product, add Dan Baird you gotta a winner , this disc kicks from start to finish!! Like one of the other reviewers mentioned, this is one of these great bands that you feel very maternal towards, glad to know that they have not become an item for the masses!! buy it, buy a bottle and enjoy!! viva Yayhoos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Rawk'n'Roll.......2003-11-12

In a perfect world, Britney, Christina, Justin, Beyonce, Linkin Park, and Fred Durst would be wallowing under the Rock Of Obscurity while the Yayhoos and their ilk rocked souled-out shows at the Garden and the Hollywood Bowl. From beginning to end, there's not another album of this caliber out right now, or in the past decade at least. It's real rawk'n'roll, baby!

After mulling over the knee-jerk first sentence of this review, I reconsider. What would be the fun of knowing and diggin' this band if EVERYONE did? It's cool to be a part of a kinda "secret club" where we can silently giggle when some bonehead elitist in Billboard prints that "rock and roll is dead". Rock on, boys!

4 out of 5 stars Right Funk and Wagner On!!!!.......2003-10-17

I firtst heard this being played in the intermission at a Steve Earle concert. I went " Holy S***, who's this!" These guys are smokin'. I inquire around and found them on a website. This is
the most pure rock and roll album I've heard in a long time.

This album is great, except it is missing "The Service Call". Which is found on "camel Toe".
Also, too much of a good thing can tire pretty easily. I can only listen to it in segments.

"Mr Obvious" is the only thing worth listening to on Bob & Tom.

4 out of 5 stars obvious or the promise?.......2007-07-30

I think that Obvious definately goes deeper with their lyrics then Plus One's last CD, The Promise. I definately like that, but the only problem for me was that The Promise has beautiful and melodic songs, while Obvious has more upbeat and rockier songs, which I don't care for. But if you like rock, get Obvious.

4 out of 5 stars plusone.......2007-01-10

THIS CD IS VERY GOOD ITS ROCKY AND ITS MESSAGE IS WHAT WE NEED TODAY YOU GOT TO LISTEN TO THIS CD HOPE THAT YOU LIKE IT CAUSE I DID THANKS

5 out of 5 stars My fav. band.......2004-06-30

Plus one has been my favorite group for the past couple of years. When I first heard The Promise I thought "I have to get a copy!" So I did. I listened to that for about a year before getting Obvious for Christmas 2002. Now I know all the songs by heart! I have to admit my sister and parents hate this CD. But they don't care if I get my head phones and listen to it. The great songs are Camouflage (an energetic song about not hiding our faith from others), Use me (a song that says how we want to be used by God), Let me be the one (this one tells us how much God wants to lead us and protect us and help us get through), Under the influence (this song is a broadcast that we love God and how he helps us to become more than we are), You (this song talks of a person who thought he didn't need God but found him and realized how wrong he was), I don't care (this song says that we don't care what others think of our faith but that we will do whatever God wants us to do), Kick me (this song tells the Christians that put others down because that other person has made a mistake to not blame them because they themselves have stumbled down the path and taken a wrong turn), Going crazy (this song tells how hard life is without God and His guidance and how we can't live without Him), Start to fly (this song is meant for people who don't have a deep enough connection with God and not enough faith and how they shouldn't give up because what's happened in their past), Calling down an angel (this is for those who have doubts about God and how He's going to help them find that He is true), Forever (Forever is a long time to be without you in my life, I wanna keep you by my side `cause forever is a long time. The chorus), and Who am I? (Who am I without God? What could describe it better?). And ten of these great songs are written by the band members. I think anyone from about age 8 to age 20 will love this (provided you're christian).

5 out of 5 stars This is just what people need........2004-06-27

In this world nowdays people don't care about God and that he created them and don't even give God a chance you should because he can really help your life so I encourage anyone that isn't going to church or doesn't know God to read this message. And get this CD it has great songs and the words are just magical and make you feel good plus is a good way to help you just know how much God loves you!

5 out of 5 stars Biggest Fan.......2004-06-25

Ever since Plus One came out, I've been their biggest fan.

I liked their first CD "The Promise" but "Obvious" was much better. The songs "Forever" (which i listen to almost everyday), "You", "Let Me Be The One" and "Who am I" are great if you like NSYNC And Backstreet Boys.

I giv this favorite CD of mine 5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars Can we add a star? People, this CD ROCKS!!! .......2005-10-21

The previous release, "The Message" is the first one I'd heard, but this one has so much going on, it's amazing! There are elements of old school rock n' rollers, like the Beatles, U2, Doobie Brothers, Chicago, Traveling Wilburys, even felt a little Marvin Gaye on some of these. It hits all the right spots--musically, stylistically, lyrically and spiritually. The encouraging, scripturally sound words sung on the ballads, the 'jumps,' the 'rockers' [Kirk Sullivan's lead 'Who's at the Wheel' just plain ROCKS!!], demonstrate again that Mark Harris is an incredible songwriter. The title track, "Signs and Wonders"--a bouncy little number, "Mystery of Grace"--a great lead by Andy Chrisman, and the Beatle-esque "The Hand of God," quickly became favorites, but there's nothing but good stuff here.

    5 out of 5 stars I love this cd!!.......2001-11-25

This cd, to me, is the best cd so far that I've heard from 4Him. This really is an outstanding group. Every song I've heard from them, sort of inspires me. They put a ton of effort into the cd they make. This cd just amazes me, it really just dumbfounds me. I like to listen to Christian music. It's really great to listen to Christian music. It's greater to listen to Christian music you know is good.

5 out of 5 stars Another Wonderful CD.......2001-06-30

4Him has always been a favorite group in my book. They are simply wonderful at harmonizing and all the songs that they sing have such wonderful messages in them. This cd has to be thier best, I think. My favorite is "Before the River came" and "Great Awakening" Though it is hard for me to choose because all the songs are wonderful. If you do not already own this cd, I suggest you buy it now!

5 out of 5 stars Another great one from 4 Him........2001-03-13

Just like the other albums that they have released, this one displays a variety of awesome voices and musical talent. I would recommend this and any other 4 Him project to anyone. The guys really know how to put on a show of great music....It's just OBVIOUS!!!

    5 out of 5 stars They just keep getting better . . . and better . . ........2000-06-21

This is probably 4HIM's best offering to date (and yes, I've got 'em all!). Musically, every song is a little different from the previous ones, and yet as a whole the CD showcases the distinct music style of 4HIM. The lyrics reflect an unashamed awe and love for God. I always have and always will *love* the harmonies that these guys treat me to--each voice is different from the rest, but together they're simply THE BEST! While I love complicated mixes like the song "Obvious," someday I hope a CD of theirs features a completely un-layered song in a capella--just those four awesome voices, singing praise to God. I'll be waiting for it!

    M.O.T.O. { Masters Of The Obvious }
    Manufacturer: CRIMINAL IQ
    ProductGroup: Music
    Binding: Audio CD
    ASIN: B000JR97PS

    Product Description

Since 1988 M.O.T.O has mined an area of punk music that doesn't lend itself easily to vast commercial success. Think Ramones with more and better jokes. Of course, punk music is more known for its rebellion and political stances than its comedy. Sophomoric humor like "Crystallize My Penis" (From Single File), "It Tastes Just Like A Milkshake" (from E Pluribus MOTO), or "Drunk On The Nectar of You" (from This Corpse is a Warning) just might not fly with some of the more humorless in the punk crowd. And certainly not with commercial radio. This is not to say that you won't find social commentary on a M.O.T.O. album. It just flies by so fast that you might miss it if you blink. "Who cares about the starving people that you see in the street each day," belts out Paul Caporino, the band's founder, on Kill M.O.T.O.'s second track. "I wanna dance, dance, dance, dance to the radio. Turn the radio on." The bass-driven song proceeds at a dizzying pace for just over 2 minutes (and that includes one of the most extended guitar breaks in the M.O.T.O. canon) until you realize that that is all the lyrics you're going to get. Short and to the point. And if you think that it's the dancing that Caporino really cares about, M.O.T.O. returns a few songs later with "Choking On Your Insides" (Gagging On The Edge of The World). Rabid M.O.T.O fans (a loyal and surprisingly widespread bunch) who appreciate the jokes won't be disappointed in Kill M.O.T.O. though. The humor remains intact. There's the musically hilarious "Got To Get Away >From The Cops", done as a sloppy skiffle tune. And the best bad pun I've heard in eons on "Where's My Money At?" "I'm not patient. I don't need no doctor."

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Over and over and over..........2007-01-27

I never tire of listening to this one. "think Ramones with more and better jokes..." Ok, but that just scratches the surface. This album boasts unbelievably catchy and rocking tunes, but it's the lyrics that really set MOTO apart from the pack. Caporino has raised crass, misanthropic humor to an art form. You will not believe the things that you find yourself singing along to! I don't really like "jokey" rock all that much, but MOTO is absolutely brilliant, and this (along w/ Single File) is a great introduction to this wonderfully twisted world.

I listened to the samples of the songs, and liked them, so I bought the cd. It was one of the BEST purchases I have ever made. I absolutely love this cd and EVERY SONG on it is AMAZING! These girls are all around 19 and EXTREMELY talented. Not only do they rock, but their lyrics are superb and their choice of melodies are beautiful and perfect. Jinxed have a unique sound all their own...a mix of rock and punk, you will love Jinxed if you like The Early November, Finch, Lillix, Taking Back Sunday, or any band on the OneElevenRecords label, or pretty much any band that has played at Warped Tour. If you don't own this cd, you should! Go BEYOND THE OBVIOUS and let each song speak to you.

    Album Description

AMG EXPERT REVIEW: Due to releases like Jerusalem Under Fire, Israeli percussionist Badawi (real name Raz Mesinai) has become one of the world's most renowned Middle Eastern percussionists. He's become an influential figure for the New York City trip-hop (or illbient) style of underground dancehall/dub music, a scene that has spawned the likes of DJ Spooky, DJ Olive, and a host of others. Amazingly, almost all the sounds you hear on Jerusalem Under Fire are played by Badawai himself, who handles percussion, flute, and effects duties, as well as supplying the string arrangements and remixing and rearranging the songs. Two other musicians (violinist Simi Sernaker and tabla player Karsh Kale) help fill out the already rich sound, while all of the compositions are entirely instrumental. Highlights are many, but the very best would have to be the constant violin swirl of "Soldier of Midian," and the percussion-driven opening track "Critical Combustion," and the traditional reggae sounds of "Kill the Messenger." — Greg Prato (All Music Guide)

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars old-school dub with an arab twist.......2000-08-18

Any lover of dub music who is bored with the current orthodoxy of Mad Professor/Massive Attack-type Brit techno-dub should check out Badawi and his return to the old-school roots of reggae. Echoing such dub masters as Scientist and King Tubby, Badawi manages to be creative and innovative not only by putting an Arab, percussion-heavy slant on dub tracks, but also by mixing up the tempo and instrumentation of the songs to cross over with styles like rocksteady and rai. This album is a must-have for all fans of dub, as well as fans of all world music crossovers and synthesis in general. Also, if you like Badawi but would prefer lyrics (in French, English and Arabic), you should check out the French band "Gnawa Diffusion".
