Product Description
What better way to celebrate God's Love than through Music!

Through the years, we've celebrated God's love in many ways as a worship team. We continue to ask "what next Lord?" and have never ceased to be amazed at the direction our path has taken. We've added new members and sent forth three new worship services. We've seen our team literally grow through marriages, adoption, new jobs and the births of two sets of twins! We've become a wonderful mix of unlikely friends representing generations brought together through a growing spiritual awareness that...it is not about us, but God, and a conviction that using our gifts of music will serve as a witness to others. we hope that, listening to this, you will be inspired also to listen to God's voice and take the risk to ask, "What next Lord?!"

Blessings,

The Celebrate! Worship Team

5 out of 5 stars one Great singer.......2007-07-11

This guy can sing his A## off. Blue eye soul OG! This is my favorite CD by him. He show he can sing Soul or POP. What a range in his voice! If I could sing like him, I would have allot of dates!!!

5 out of 5 stars Jazzy Soulful West Coast masterpiece.......2007-05-20

By 1977 when this album was released, Kenny Loggins was hot property by dint of his songwriting/singing and production as part of Loggins and Messina. His songs had shown increasing sophistication and and even on the last of the duo's records 'Native Sons' (itself a disappointment) Loggin's had some outstanding contributions. As it was, 'Celebrate me Home' was a magnificent collection of songs in the AOR/West Coast genre. Produced by Bob James of jazz piano fame, it had a jazzy, soulful, AOR production. All the songs stand alone as strong compositions with strong themes and competent lyrics. The instrumentation is innovative and colourful, with mandolins and other exotic instruments lying on top of the jazz/soul groove. The female back up singing on 'Ïf you be wise' ( a Jimmy Webb composition) is spine tinglingly evocative and some of Loggin's own compositions are quite outstanding (Enter my dream, I believe in Love). So if you're looking at 70s/80s West Coast music this is up there on the pinnacle. There's no country flavour at all (this was in the twilight of the heyday of country rock) and Loggin's folk music roots aren't apparent either but surely contribute to the backbone of the magnificent song writing. Essential.

5 out of 5 stars One Solid Album!.......2006-05-20

During the mid 70's and early 80's artists like Gino Vannelli, Herbie Hancock, Lee Ritenour, Danny O'Keefe, Al Jarreau, Brenda Russell, Michael Franks, Jess Roden and Bobby Caldwell mixed a great blend of pop, soul and jazz resulting in some of the best vocal tunes ever made. Kenny Loggins entered the mix with the fabulous and beautiful Celebrate Me Home. I first heard "I've Got The Melody (Deep In My Heart)" and was left astounded by it's strong vocals, beautiful string arrangement and happy melody. During that time radio wasn't afraid to play non-single cuts from albums and the next great tune I'd hear from "Celebrate Me Home" was "Enter My Dream" and that was enough for me to obtain what would become a 30 year love affair with a musical masterpiece.

Prior to Celebrate Me Home, I was only familiar with a few Loggins and Messina pop songs like "Your Mama Don't Dance" and "My Music" and couldn't believe that half of that duo would create one of the best albums that I've ever heard. Later I'd hear other L&M songs and could detect Kenny's love for jazz evolving. Actually Jimmy Messina's "Oasis" solo album was really good too.

I really miss those early days of Kenny Loggins and wish he stayed on that course because what he made in 1977 was pure magic and despite other fine attempts (primarily "Nightwatch" and "Keep The Fire") that followed nothing quite compared to "Celebrate Me Home." I guess that was Kenny's "Dark Side of the Moon" and you know how often those kind of albums come out. Of course later Hollywood would tap into Kenny's talents and made him into Mr. Soundtrack and then following the 80's I honestly haven't kept up with his music or what I heard not nearly as impressive.

But if you really love 70's and 80's vocals "Celebrate Me Home" is one great album that I highly recommend. When CDs first came out it was on top of my "gotta get list" because I wore out 2 vinyl copies and several homemade cassettes because I could never get enough. It should have been his biggest seller or at least respected more from the critics, but it's still not too late to relive the magic and enjoy early Kenny Loggins at his best!

5 out of 5 stars Forget his '80s stuff, grab this CD and play it to death!.......2005-10-05

If only the rest of his solo career had built on the promise of this jazzy masterpiece.... For some reason (probably because Columbia's A&R guys told him to), Loggins teamed up with Bob James who produced (along with Phil Ramone), arranged and staffed the album, and the results are stunning. The song mix is perfect, the groove shifts from ballad to pop to shoop-shoop, yet stays within a range of common appeal that makes the whole seem greater and more thoughtful than the sum of its component tracks.

Loggins can write when he wants to (and when he is not working out his realtionship therapy on disk like so many of his recent works), and his songs played by the likes of Eric Gale, Lee Ritenour, Harvey Mason, James, Hiram Bullock, Robben Ford, and other "jazz planet" guys of the '70s sound fabulous. And the album is so well engineered that it sounds arguably better on LP than on CD (something you analog audiophiles can verify).

Even if the words "Kenny Loggins" cause the post-disco, movie-soundtrack bile to rise in yor throat (a widely-held, but I think unfair, sentiment), anyone who is a fan of contempo jazz vocals must give this album a try. It is almost 30 years old and it still holds up, in the timeless way that really good music should. It is one of my true Desert Island disks, and it might become one of yours, too.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Beauty.......2005-09-10

I've owned this for years on vinyl, now on CD. I'm not really a Loggins fan but this was a perfect album on vinyl and upon repeated listening on CD some kind of a minor masterpiece.

The songs are memorable and the arrangements by jazz master Bob James sparkle.

Some girlfriend in the past turned me on to this and I'm glad she did! Great for gettin' mellow by the fire.

Celebrate me home... a perfect CD. Enjoy

This is an amazing CD. Snatam Kaur has the voice of an angel. She is crystal clear and the music fills your heart and soul. The little one's in our family are mesmerized by this CD and with the other two we purchased by Snatam. Thank you and keep up the magnificent work.

1 out of 5 stars complaint.......2007-05-16

I am very annoying because this compact is lined, with small spaces in target. I wanted to know as amazon responds before this type of event, since I finish retiring it of the customs. It was completly closed and when opening it and putting on the radio I founded with this disagreeable surprise. It would be thankful that it was sent to me again since in addition to the cost of compac, the customs shipment and taxes command post encounter whereupon compact practically does not serve to me.

4 out of 5 stars What We All Need.......2007-05-13

My only disappointment with this CD is that I thought it was a "live" album recorded during Snatam Kaur's Celebrate Peace Tour.
Otherwise, a nice compilation from Snatam Kaur. If you are familiar with her material, you will enjoy this offerring and if this is your first experience, the CD is a good place to begin, with songs from several of her CD's.
I wish we all would jump on the "Peace Bandwagon." It's what the world needs. What a great idea to tour for peace.
You can feel the devotion in Snatam's music, which goes beyond any words.
By all means, I would recommend this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Worth it for the First Three Tracks Alone.......2007-03-07

Part of this album is a compilation of songs from previous albums, but the first three cuts are original and are great all on their own. So if you don't own any of Snatam's music, this is a nice overview. But even if you do own some of her albums, get this one anyway just for the new tracks! My favorite is the first cut, "We are Peace." Lots of energy and a great one to sing along to. "People of Love" is also an easy one to sing along to--a great one for children, too. "Long Time Sun" takes its lyrics from Yogi Bhajan's "benediction" used at the end of every Kundalini practice. Even if you don't practice yoga, it's nice to just say this little song for yourself and the ones you love every day:

May the long time sun shine upon you
All love surround you
And the pure light within you guide your way on

Anchored by his Mormon Tabernacle-charged "Call of Champions" (theme of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games) and the sweeping, emotionally rich six-part title suite (originally written for Washington, D.C.'s millennium celebrations and appearing here for the first time as a complete concert piece), this rousing, unabashedly patriotic collection from John Williams seems doubly timely, given America's hunger for comforting affirmation. Those who criticize the scale of Williams's music for its lack of irony will find little here to dissuade them, save perhaps "For New York," his deft, surprisingly low-key arrangement of appropriate Leonard Bernstein themes, and the comparatively subdued harmonic/melodic sophistication of "Song for World Peace." But this is largely music of ceremony and celebration--its scale and frequently martial rhythms are a direct function of purpose and intent. The collection's notes foster the notion of Williams as America's contemporary Sousa, but that's a comparison that sells the composer woefully short. Even "Sound the Bells," a piece written for the Japanese royal wedding, eschews any efforts at ethnic "authenticity," paying its tribute in distinctly American terms. "The Mission Theme" (from NBC News) and the Coplandesque bonus track "Summon the Heroes" (from the 1996 Olympics) further underscore the iconic intent of Williams's work. Chiding this collection for lack of subtlety is like complaining that fireworks are too spectacular. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Perfectly Williams.......2006-02-25

If you want a combination of John Williams at his best and the original olympic spirit, this is a must! The album starts off with the olympic theme from the Salt Lake Winter Olympic Games and continues with the opening ceremony music. It's wonderful how Williams composes the music to describe the American evolution and history.

If you like the more fanfare-like Williams type of music and want to listen to a great album with great compositions I recommend this album to you! It really deserves 5 out of 5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring soundtrack that is vintage John Williams.......2006-01-15

I really enjoyed American Journey, as well as the other pieces John Williams composed for the 2002 Winter Olympics. When listened to all the way through, American Journey is a powerful tribute to the pioneers and explorers of America. Of the other pieces, my favorite was the Mission Theme, which features the well-known theme from NBC news with some excellent variations. The two main fanfares (Call of the Champions - 2002 Olympics, Summon the Heroes - 2000 Olympics) are the highlights of the CD, and unlike most people I actually thought Call of the Champions was better. I especially liked Williams' use of the choir and timpani in this piece.
I would recommend this CD to anyone whether they are a fan of John Williams or not.

5 out of 5 stars Very impressive stuff.......2005-04-28

This really was one of William's best compositions and the performance by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir was inspired as well. I think when people recall these Olympics, the sounds of "Call of the Champions" provides a very memorable musical image of the games. The Boston Pops Orchestra does an impressive job as well in this very attractive CD. Wonderful music from a memorable Olympic experience.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for the John Williams lover.......2003-05-11

This is not my favorite John Williams CD, because I love his film scores, and the way they are arranged and built. However, this is John Williams performing his classical and ceremonial music, and with that in mind, this is an excellent CD. The "American Journey" suite is the strongest new material on the album - I say "new material" because the last track, Summon the Heroes (1996 Olympics) is one of John Williams's greatest, most energetic pieces. "American Journey" is filled with American patriotism, feeling, and excitement (my personal favorite is the Arts & Entertainment movement). With this CD and John Williams's other Olympic music, I believe he has redefined what American classical music is.

5 out of 5 stars Really makes you feel proud.......2003-02-02

John Williams scores again, proving he can do more than compose music for Superman and Star Wars. This disk is filled with simply wonderful patriotic music, upbeat, small-scale at times, always suited to the title.

It's a wonderful listen for anyone...just as fun to listen to as any other John Williams tunes like Superman and Star Wars; and this time it isn't specifically related to a movie!

4 out of 5 stars Wondrous gentle music.......2007-01-10

I first saw Isabel on an SBS programme and was amazed at the glorious sounds she was producing. This album is great, relaxing, full of strength and beauty. My only word of caution would be that unless you are in the right mood it can sound a bit repetitive by the time you get to the end of the album. However, I am very glad that I bought it.

4 out of 5 stars hauntingly beautiful.......2006-08-22

Very beautiful melodies and a gorgeous voice - doesn't vary as much though as a whole cd -
can get monotonous after a few songs

5 out of 5 stars The voice of the soul.......2006-01-01

Growing up in the Armenian church, it was impossible not to be powerfully moved by the music. Isabel Bayrakdarian was clearly also moved in the same way. Her singing is so flawless, yet it conveys the depths of her spiritual feelings. It is wonderful that people who have not been exposed to this music will have a chance to experience its power and beauty.

5 out of 5 stars Divinely Joyous.......2005-09-28

Isabel Bayrakdarian is a certified classical music diva today, an excellent Mozartian, Handelian, songs and lieder recitalist and overall a very bright star in the current line-up of young sopranos. And this is how she started her recorded career- with a disc of Armenian liturgical music.
For me it is actually very refreshing to listen to songs in language that I don't understand at all- and a nice break from the usual Latin, German, and my native ones- but at the same time, knowing that they are sung by someone who understands the texts and has a spiritual connection to them is a nice bonus. (And if you want to explore the meaning behind the sounds, the original Armenian texts and translations are included in the CD booklet...) It's also a new musical experience to my ears- I am used to certain melismatic forms of Indian music, and Soeur Marie Keyrouz records of Byzantine chants, yet this music still sounds quite exotic to me. And, at all times, very beautiful.
Like Gregorian chant in its pure form, it would get somewhat monotonous, if it wasn't for Bayrakdarian's heartfelt delivery. I find that the opening song is my favourite and often end up listening to it over and over again, but the whole album is very addictive. Not all the songs have the same joyous rapture feel- some are melancholy tinged, some are both at the same time. You need to listen to this music to appreciate its strange charms. It's beautiful and deeply spiritual, all in one. It is certainly Sacred Joy for my ears.

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking!!!.......2002-08-14

This is a stunning recording. Isabel Bayrakdarian's voice is a wonderful clear soprano, rich and warm throughout its range and free of any roughness. Her long familiarity with this repertoire lets her shape each phrase beautifully and, apparently, effortlessly.

The disk derives from a concert that took place in Toronto in September, 2001 commemorating 1700 years of Christianity in Armenia. It consists of 18 pieces of liturgical music. In some Bayrakdarian sings a capella, but in most she is supported by a chamber orchestra. One is aware that this is not western music, but the modes in which it is written are just unusual enough to European ears to be a little exotic while remaining entirely accessible. It's not quite melodic, but not quite chant either. Bayrakdarian's melismas are always sensitive and subtle. The whole effect is soaring, haunting, ethereal, transporting, utterly wonderful.

This is a desert island disk for sure.

4 out of 5 stars Not a perfect anthology but darn close.......2006-11-19

Fans can always complain about what was left off of a collection. Those are the fans that probably need to buy the original albums and leave it alone. For those of us who purchased the singles for Three Dog Night (and some of their early albums) when they came out this is a perfect collection of the band's 18 Top 20 hits, key album tracks and rarities.

The CD collection opens with early singles/songs recorded by Danny Hutton (when he was a staff writer at Hanna-Barbara the production company responsible for "Scooby Doo" and "Josie and the Pussycats" cartoons), Cory Wells with his band The Enemies (whose sign off was "Love Thy Enemy")and a demo featuring the trio of singers produced by Brian Wilson ("Time to Get Alone").We then jump into tracks from their first album and singles including a cover of Traffic's "Heaven is in Your Mind", Elton John's "Lady Samantha" (before he became a star in the U.S.) and other classic tracks.

The second disc takes off with Hoyt Axton's classic "Never Been To Spain" and continues through the band at their peak until about the 16th track. The last couple of tracks are from less successful releases but no less worthy.

Sound quality is exceptional with many of the original stereo and mono mixes used (the band and producers selected the best sounding mixes for inclusion). The album is beautifully remastered by Bill Inglot and Dan Hirsch. The original selections sound terrific. There's also an 18 page booklet with comments from the band and complete original credits. If you only want their hits the single disc collection is probably the way to go but that overlooks many of their fine albums tracks and songs that didn't quite chart. With 43 songs from from 1965 (when the early singles/demos were recorded)until 1983 (the band's last album--yeah I know it's subtitled 1965-1975 but the anthology goes beyond the salad days of the band)this truly is the best collection available. Although Edsel has reissued many of these as 2fers on Cd the sound quality is inferior on many of them.

Formed in 1967 by Cory Wells, Danny Hutton and Chuck Negron the band was unusual from the start--they performed the best songs by OTHER writers. It was a perfect approach for three lead singers that allowed the best songs to be recorded without bruising too many egos early on. The trio fo singers recruited musicians that they had known and played with over the years to fill out the band and by April of 1969 had their first top ten single a cover of Harry Nilsson's classic "One". From there the band had a string of hits including their cover of Randy Newman's "Mama Told Me Not To Come" (#1), "Joy to the World" (Hoyt Axton a fishing buddy of Cory's), "Black & White", "Eli's Coming" (Laura Nyro), "Shambala", "Sure As I'm Sitting Here" (John Hiatt) and others.

5 out of 5 stars No fillers--no fluff.......2006-09-08

I grew up only knowing a few TDN songs--Joy to the World, Old Fashioned Love Song, Celebrate. I was a small child when they were in their hayday and they were a little bit "mature" for me. I saw this CD last year and bought it because it had one of my favorite songs on it--Out in the Country. Now I realize that they weren't releasing just the good stuff. This CD is full of fantastic music, from doo-wop to ballads to hard(er) rock. I love the booklet that came with the CD's explaining the background of each song and which member sings each song. If you enjoy Three Dog Night, this is the CD to have.

4 out of 5 stars Good set but some missing pieces.......2006-02-22

At their peak, there was not a more popular group than Three Dog Night but the start of this 2 disc set includes pre-Dog material that IMO, should have been left off to make room for more TDN songs. Maybe the only exception to this would be 'Roses and Rainbows' by Danny Hutton because it is the only song I remember ever getting any radio play time. "Celebrate" is good but it misses the mark by leaving out some of their best material like 'Rock and Roll Widow', 'Chest Fever', 'Don't Make Promises' and 'Jam'. Not perfect for the TDN collector but good enough for those who just want a taste.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Compilation Set.......2004-09-09

If you are a Three Dog Night fan or just getting yourself familiar with the group, this is a great album to get. Even if you own all the regularly issued Three Dog Night albums, this one has a lot of single tracks that were hits and are indeed the single mixes. Many of Three Dog Night's single tracks were slightly different mixes from the song versions that appeared on albums. For example, the mixes to "Black and White" and "Joy to the World" are different. The 45 mixes are better as presented here.

Purhcasers of this set will also get a sampling of several album tracks such as "You," "Cowboy" and "Midnight Runaway". Also appearing are "Going in Circles", the B-side to "Family of Man" and the funky "Our B-side" which was a B-side to the single "Shambala" I believe. All great music.

The CD set is superbly packaged with very good liner notes and track information.

About the only thing that I can find fault with this collection are the songs that they left off... namely "Sunlight" from the "Naturally" album and "Rock n Roll Widow" from the still-out-of-print album, "It Ain't Easy." Otherwise this is a great compilation.

5 out of 5 stars Complete history of the band.....for fanatics only!!!!.......2004-06-02

When I purchased this package several years ago, this was easily the best available collection of Three Dog Night on the market. No question about it, Three Dog Night dominated the music charts like no one else in the early 1970's All 21 of the groups single releases between 1969 and 1975 made the Top 40 and all of those songs are included here. There were 11 Top Ten tunes and 3 of those went all the way to #1 including "Mama Told Me (Not To Come)", "Joy To The World" and "Black and White". At the same time they were dominating the AM airwaves, Three Dog Night could also be heard on the FM side of the dial. The group released some 14 albums and 5 of those went Top Ten on the Billboard Top Pop Albums chart.
As stated previously, this magnificent collection includes all 21 hit singles as well as many great tracks from the LPs. There is also an exceptional 30 page booklet that chronicles the entire history of the group. But since I am primarily interested in the "singles" this collection offers far more than I am really looking for or need. At this point I would recommend this package to big fans of the band only. For the rest of us there is now an alternative. In May 2004 Universal released all 21 hit singles on 1 CD. Priced at less than half of what one would have to shell out fot this deluxe 2 CD package it is now the better value.

One of the same of Red's many great CD's....
Very great children's music, along with Hap Palmer,
I also thoroughly enjoy Greg and Steve---
There are so many great enchanting voices that relax
us, and Red is one of them!!!

This goes for Hap Palmer too!!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite children's CD of all time.......2004-05-04

Red Grammer is my favorite musician for young children (and adults as well), and this is my favorite of all his albums. My preschool class love to sign "Hello World" and rock out to "Bueno Appetito" (and parents love to hear them using phrases in 4 different languages). But my two personal favorites for their beauty and message are "on the day you were born" and "Starlight, Starbright". Wonderful for parents, kids, and teachers alike.

5 out of 5 stars Worth paying for.......2003-11-03

A friend of mine knew I was taking my two kids (ages 3.5 and 1.5 years) on a long car trip, and told me his uncle was a children's song musician. He dropped off a (burned) copy of this album to us to take in the car on the trip. We had never heard of Red Grammer before then. Well, we took the trip and everyone loved the album. It gets better and better each time we listen to it. My 3 1/2 year old just rocks out to it in the back of the car, singing and dancing along. It keeps him occupied the whole time it plays. We like it so much that I'm buying a legitimate copy of it, just to support this wonderful artist, and another copy to give to my son's school.

5 out of 5 stars Best kids' music EVER!!.......2002-12-12

This is a wonderful, WONDERFUL collection of kids' songs! My daughters (ages 3 and 5) have been listening to it for more than 3 years -- this was the first tape my 5-year-old sang along with. They both LOVE it! We lost it over the summer and I was happy to replace it because we all missed it so much. The music is beautiful, fun, not annoying to parents, and expresses nothing but happiness. Red Grammer is a genius, and I'm glad (especially on long car trips) that we found him! Also, if you ever have a chance to see him live, do it! He does a great show!

5 out of 5 stars Best children's CD we've ever bought.......2002-10-15

Red Grammer has a nice voice and plenty of musical talent, but the real stars on this CD are the songs themselves. Every one is a gem--singable, danceable, filled with messages of love and peace. I find myself humming them constantly. I'm buying multiple copies to give to my daughter's friends for Christmas.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful for kids and grownups too!.......2003-11-26

My baby daughter--10 1/2 months--loves this CD. She smiles when it comes on and bounces to all the songs. I love it too! The music is great with a good pacing of fast and slow songs. The lyrics are adorable, with topics that babies and toddlers can relate to (and parents too). Best of all, Brady Rymer's powerful love for his own son comes through on all the tracks--it's really written from the heart!

5 out of 5 stars My girls love it!.......2003-11-21

My daughters (ages 2 and 3) will listen to this CD over and over. They know more words to the songs than I do. I bought this CD after seeing Brady Rymer perform at a local library.

I think you will be happy with this purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Get Your Goat On............2006-01-10

With lyrics that appeal to young and old, and amazing musical chops that expand the genre of what is defined as "children's music", the energy is amazing from start to finish. You'll be sneaking this one from your child's CD collection when they're not looking, and play it loud and play it proud.

5 out of 5 stars Good for big kids too!.......2005-12-11

Not having kids, I can't speak as a parent. But as a longtime Terri Hendrix fan (and a discriminating fan of great music in general), I love this record. Terri's always had "fun" songs and serious songs on her records, and I've always been partial to the serious stuff but enjoy the fun stuff too because I admire her scope and ability to make you, as she put it in one song, "cry till you laugh." Her kids record is ALL fun, but smart and moving, too. And true to its title, it's all over the place: pop, folk, sing-alongs, techno, country and even a little punk ("Nerves" has gotta be the craziest song she's ever done, and you can tell she had a blast rocking out on it, too.) The whole record plays like a big, warm happy smile. Oh, and if you have kids, I suspect they'll dig it, too.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Deep, Dark, Ska, Highly Recommended.......2006-03-21

This is not your normal British ska-revival record of the early 1980's. This isn't happy, teen-bop ska, designed to make 16 year old kids dance poorly. This is a dark, haunting, bluesy iteration of ska that has to my knowledge never been attemped before or since. For that reason it is a very unique record.

If you love the genre of ska, it is a must-have, for it delivers an interpretation of ska that quite simply cannot be found on any other disc.

5 out of 5 stars Fresh and relevant.......2004-05-11

Celebrate The Bullet is a must-own record. I have never heard another record with its mix of alluring vocals, topical lyrics, ska beats and luscious, textured orchestrations. The CD rerelease even includes several remixed dub versions that are worth an extra listen.

I bought the vinyl many, many years ago and have always counted it as one of my favorite albums. When I saw the CD available, I jumped at the chance to order it. What I found is that the music still sounds fresh and inventive and the lyrics are even more apropos than ever. It's as if The Selecter were looking twenty years ahead in time when they put the record out.

The CD release also includes a useful historical booklet with interesting facts (the title cut, for instance, was banned from the BBC because it was released the week that President Reagan was shot).

5 out of 5 stars always was treasured.......2003-03-03

i got vinyl in '83. i too was a little taken aback when it first hit my ears, but then the more i listened, the more it grew on me until i was totally sold on the selecter as my favourite band from that period and one of my all-time favourites. it was a cleverly orchestrated album for them when you consider the scene from which they spawned, and especially following their first "influential" album of the era - no more than 2 years earlier. a new direction, or rather a tangent to the sound that was essentially theirs anyway, i think further propelled the group to a brave new level. alas, the rest of the world had moved along. nevermind, the spirit of the music that was the selecter, is still very much alive whenever i play any of their tracks. PS: i'll look around for the re-release cd as the vinyl went the way of a number of other classic albums from the era - eroded.

4 out of 5 stars Ska with a creepy edge........2002-08-30

Those of us accustomed to the fun loving beat ska of Prince Buster, The Skatalites, The Specials, and the skinhead fun of Symarip will be put off when first listening to this album. There is fun to be had here, with lively beats and those orgasmic bass lines that make ska one of my favourite styles, but there is a much darker, more sombre edge to this album than to most ska. The music is haunting, intruding, not the carefree skanking tunes we are used to. The lyrics of ska have always been darker than the music, but in this case the music meets the lyrics emotionally, making an innovative and at times brilliant album. I have the vinyl version, I just got it for five dollars, so I don't know about the asterisked tracks, but the original version is overall quite good, an interesting addition to a true ska lover's collection. When just getting introduced to the style, The Specials or Skatalites might be better representatives, however.

5 out of 5 stars Talk about underrated..........2002-06-12

I've been waiting for this one to come out on CD for 16 years! In fact, I still have the LP, the one vinyl album I've kept, out of nostalgic reasons.

The Selecter were part of the 1980s ska revival that included Madness, the Specials, and Bad Manners. Their first album, Too Much Pressure (also long unavailable in its original form) was straightforward dance music, and is one of the highly rated albums of this genre. Their second album, Celebrate the Bullet, described by lead singer Pauline Black as "our blue period" featured a wider range of sound, some of it fast-paced dance music, some of it thoughtful and contemplative. It didn't meet with the success of the first record, and no doubt had something to do with the band's temporary demise.

Don't believe the critics, though. In fact, don't believe the current Selecter members, who ignored these songs entirely when they regrouped in the 1990s. Cool Blue Lady, Deep Water, and Bombscare feature Pauline Black's most haunting vocals, combined with emotionally intense, compelling melodies.

Most of these songs have been released on CD, scattered across three or four compilations. But at last, the original album is available. If you like ska music, this is a rarity you shouldn't overlook! I'm ordering my copy right now, and so should you.
