Chances are, the most devoted fans of these three musicians have heard these tunes before, thanks to the crafty pizza-delivery boy who filched the tapes from Garcia's kitchen soon after they were recorded in 1993. That said, the warm, intimate performances here are very much worth an official CD release. The sessions came about when Tony Rice was in Northern California to record the delightful duet-collection Tone Poems with David Grisman. Garcia stopped by to hang out and jam with his old buddy Grisman and with Rice, one of his guitar idols. The disc retains all of the joy and spontaneity you'd expect from such an informal setting--Grisman even elected to leave in the between-song banter, which mostly consists of genuine overflowing mutual praise. The music itself, primarily traditional folk songs, is quite engaging thanks to Garcia's affecting, soulful, pained vocals and to the picking of all three. The contrast in flat-picking-guitar styles makes for an interesting combination: while Rice is technically superb, marvelously quick, and of remarkably clarion tone, Garcia is much more emotional and visceral, feeling his way along. There are a handful of exploratory, off-the-cuff jams that add to the impulsive nature of the whole project. Had the threesome actually intended this to be released, it probably wouldn't have the appeal it does, for this is the product of friends and music lovers, not recording artists. --Marc Greilsamer

If you likes The Grateful Dead and if you like bluegrass, then this is something you must have.

5 out of 5 stars What becomes a legend most.......2006-12-24

Legend has it this remarkable recording was swiped by a pizza delivery boy from David Grisman's kitchen shortly after it was completed. Sounds a little far fetched to me, but no matter how the recording ultimately came to see the light of day, we, the fans, are the lucky beneficiaries.

I've been a Dead aficionado (most people probably wouldn't describe me as a "deadhead") for the last 20 years or so. During that time, I've amassed close to 100 of their recordings, official and bootlegs. I've also perused Jerry's solo works, and by and large, can't say anything has really gripped me as much as his work with the Dead.

There are two exceptions to that: The pizza tapes and Shady Grove. Both were recorded very shortly before Jerry passed on to the big Dead concert in the sky, and both are just incredibly beautiful documents of his bluegrass/banjo/mountain picking roots.

These two recordings are absolutely essential for anyone who has been captivated by the incredible treasure that is Jerry Garcia and the Dead.

5 out of 5 stars Greatness.......2006-10-16

This is perfect relaxing music, a must have for any dead heads, this is the stuff that hippies are made out of, pure dedication to music spreading peace and love.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoy this tasty acoustic treat... It's HOT!!.......2006-03-06

When I make a long night drive home after a loud concert, I like to listen to something quiet and soothing. THE PIZZA TAPES is one of my favorite quiet and soothing picks, it's a sweet masterpiece of acoustic jamming and inspired playing. During two days in February of 1993 Garcia, Grisman and Rice got together to fiddle around with some tunes and see how they came out on tape. As we all know, the recordings were stolen by the infamous "Pizza boy" and soon they became property of the formidable Grateful Dead tape and CD trading community. Several years later Grisman remastered the recordings and put out the best takes on this album. This isn't an album of electric jams, it's rather impromptu, quiet and easygoing. Some people might dismiss it as "background music." However if you take a closer listen, the trio handles the traditional tunes and Bob Dylan tunes and the Gershwin (!) tunes with such skill, there's hardly an uninspired or false note anywhere to be found. Garcia screws up here and there but even those mistakes are a pleasure to listen to. Definitely a classic album and something I received with anticipation. I still enjoy putting this on and it gets better with successive listenings.

By the way, I love the cover art... the CD case is made to resemble a pizza box. Open it up and the disc is a pizza pie with all the toppings. On the back is a menu of all the treats including some spicy items (choice words from Garcia!)
I actually get the craving for pizza when I'm listening to the album. The PIZZA TAPES sure is one tasty album. Great music and great pizza, what a winning combination!!

4 out of 5 stars a view from the studio.......2005-12-21

This CD really is a lot of fun. The music is great, but the banter between the musicians is even better. Just buy it and enjoy.

By the way, if you're new to the Acoustic Disc label, note that they often bury a little surprise at the end of their CD's. It won't be listed on the menu of tunes or mentioned in the liner notes. It's usually a little snippet or out-take, and it's always a treat. You can't even find it with the "fast forward" button; you have to wait for the last song to end, then there will be a rather long pause and then the trailer will start playing. So, don't be in such a rush to remove the CD from the player; there might be more to come.

To call the Drive-By Truckers an alt-country band is a disservice--to the Truckers and their Buzzcocks-meet-the-Outlaws brand of punk-rock twang, as well as to most alt-country bands, which hardly belong in the same county as DBT, let alone borrowing the same genre. This remastered re-release of the Alabama foursome's 1999 sophomore record picks up where its debut album Gangstabilly (also re-issued by New West Records) left off--fruitful storyteller Patterson Hood and his cotton-drawl vocals bobbing and weaving through the trepidations and peculiarities of his life in the Deep South. The Truckers abstain from some of the white-trash bulls-eyes and volume 11 blasters on their debut for a 14-song hootenanny about riding bulldozers in red clay, a reclusive uncle, giving up sex for the Lord, and a Memphis performance by the late shock-rocker G.G. Allin. The bluesy sing-a-long "Nine Bullets" features one round of lead for each of Hood's adversaries, but two songs later he harmoniously reminisces his great-grandmother in "Box of Spiders." It's a remarkable divergence that drives Pizza Deliverance and sets the table for the Southern Rock Opera that comes next. - Scott Holter

Album Description

5 out of 5 stars Sweeter with time.......2005-12-26

This album is just like its title -- it gets better each time you hear it.

When I first bought the album, I thought it was the weak link of my Truckers collection. But one year and about 100 listens later, I found myself in a Tuscaloosa coffee shop asking Patterson before a concert to play more from it. You don't find much more Southern honesty than from DBT, especially in Pizza Deliverance. His stories of a great grandmother who was "too mean to die," a desire to use his roommate's gun to get rid of some of the annoyances in his life, relations with an older woman and his sister-in-law, and attending a G.G. Allen concert with fellow DBT singer Mike Cooley are too good lyrically not to hear. And by the way, if you think this guy can tell a tale, you ought to hear him elaborate on some of the songs in concert. Still, Cooley's the best lyricists of the three singers, and Jason Isbell was a perfect addition starting with Decoration Day.

5 out of 5 stars 99% Killer and 1% Filler.......2005-06-01

This was the Trucker's second album, but was pretty much the songs they toured on when they first started out. In the liner notes, Patterson Hood states that they basically wanted to capture all those tunes even though "Gangstabilly" was the first release. This album has a lot of songs on it. As a result, the album seems kind of long to me, but really, there's only maybe one annoying song on the whole album. So, 13/14 ain't too bad.

First, the annoying one: "The President's Penis is Missing" is basically a jokey-jokey song not only about Clinton but a whole bunch of former U.S. presidential affairs. Might have been funny at the time, but seeing as how I got this CD in the middle of Bush's second term, it's outdated, and the music sounds like it belongs in a circus act. And for those of you keeping political score at home - it's neither defending or condemning these affairs, but just basically says it is what it is.

I'm not going to do a blow by blow of the rest of the tunes. They're all pretty great in their own way, and my favorites change depending on the day of the week. One notable is "The Company I Keep." To me, this is classic Patterson Hood. Just like Robert Plant claims "Kashmir" is the quintessential Led Zeppelin tune, "The Company I Keep" is THE ANTHEM of the DBT. Again, it's not my favorite tune, but the chorus is catchy as all get-out.

Mike Cooley's tunes, "Uncle Frank" and "One of These Days" are always in my head. If you google the Tennessee Valley Authority you'll find tons of sites discussing how great it was for Alabama. "Uncle Frank" tells the story from a different opinion. "One of These Days" seems to be about a rite of passage to me, or at least how different places and events can change a person.

"Pizza Deliverance" should have been an indication that these guys were destined for great things.

5 out of 5 stars Pizza Knife! I mean nif.......2007-05-16

This EP is great, if im on a long road trip and getting tired I throw this bad boy on and it wakes me up! If you get a chance to see them live its one of the best shows I have been to. Whenever they play Anti-Pizza some guy dressed up like a pizza comes out and plays the triangle!

5 out of 5 stars Good stuff.......2007-05-10

This album is hilarious. If you like theme albums, this is for you.

5 out of 5 stars "Horse the Band" isn't going anywhere yet.......2007-05-08

I was a little late getting on this EP. It wasn't until recently that I started finding band's EPs to be worthwhile, so just little while ago I decided to pick up the Pizza EP.

When I first popped the disc in my CD player, I admit I thought to myself that Horse the Band have finally begun to get stale. Halfway through the first song, I realized how wrong I was!

Horse the Band have stayed true to their style, but this new EP is more experimental and crazier than ever. I have a feeling an EP like this will scare away those scene fans who have trouble admitting to the nerdy culture that surrounds Horse the Band, but for the rest of this this EP will not disappoint. It's only 5 songs, and about 20 minutes long, but not one song is bad. In fact, most of the songs on this EP are better than many of the songs on previous albums.

The best song of the album, I think, is forth track "Pizza NIF" for reasons other reviewers have mentioned earlier, but their cover of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles stands as the "Cutsman" or the "Birdo" of the album. Hopefully, this album is preview of the type of music to come from Horse the Band in the future.

2 out of 5 stars Just Silly.......2007-04-09

I'm sorry, but I just don't buy the hype anymore. Horse the Band definetley had something with R. Borlax, very unique and oddly brutal music, and the synth was pretty killer. But then The Mechanical Hand was drowned down with abrupt silliness an overall jackass quality to it. Then they release this EP called "PIZZA". They apparently ate some pizza in Chicago so good they had to write an album about it. Kinda weird, just weird. While it does carry some pretty cool jams along the way. I just can't get over the idea; It's about F**king Pizza!!! I mean, sure it's good. but musically, c'mon. it's just a stupid idea. I still kinda dig these guys considering their pretty tight musicians, but that weirdo vocalist just ruins it sometimes. Hopefully 'A Natural Death' Will pull out some goods, because this is just embarassing.

5 out of 5 stars The Best EP to Pizza Ever!!.......2007-04-05

Seriously, such a great little EP. If you love HORSE the Band then you must own this, its just so great. Fun and good to dance too. Glorifying the greates food ever made!!

If you like heavy music but are tired of depressing subject matter and chugga chugga riffage then get this and experience one of the funnest bands around!

5 out of 5 stars Kids love this CD!.......2007-07-04

I am a teacher in a dual immersion (Spanish) elementary school. My students beg me to play this CD all the time. The songs are fun, catchy and easy to learn. I would highly recommend this CD for anyone who speaks Spanish and has kids, anyone who wants their kids to learn some Spanish songs, and for teachers who want to incorporate music to their class.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and fun........2005-09-08

My children are bilingual and they really get a kick out of the words to the songs. The CD is upbeat.

5 out of 5 stars Best learning songs for kids!.......2005-07-09

I first heard this music when my older daughter was a year old. She was too young to appreciate anything but the beat, but she sure liked that! I located a copy this year, and my two kids absolutely love to sing along. At only 2, the younger one has absorbed many of the phonemes of the Spanish language thanks to this album.

The kids like it so much that they request it about 50% of the time (and another album the other 50%). It's interesting enough for both parents to put up with the repetition, too (which is rare)!

Charlotte Diamond is a real gem!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Spanish albums.......2004-07-26

My preschoolers love the songs. They're catchy and easy to learn with familiar words/concepts. Soy Una Pizza is a hilarious song that the kids love to sing and enact. La Bamba is one of the best versions I have heard and the children love it as well. Un Pulpito is a wonderful song...All the songs are wonderful and I have found them very easy to incorporate into my classroom. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Parenting Magazine.......2006-01-16

Kimmy's offbeat style offers a bluesy call and response that teaches vowels, a dino-riff on a classic Eric Carle book, and a fresh interpretation called "Toes, Knees, Shoulders, and Head." Our favorite: "Billy Goat Walk," features oodles of let loose vocal theatrics"

5 out of 5 stars Publishers Weekly Magazine.......2006-01-16

This effervescent approach to emphasizing preschool concepts through catchy songs is bound to be a hit in classrooms as well as with families. Kimmy's versatile voice often has an appealing blues-jazz edge, but she can rap, rock and do goofy Elvis-style impersonations and character voices with the best of them. The 20 brief selections here focus on such kid-centric and educational themes as making friends, colors, vowels, parts of the body, digging dinosaurs and boosting self-esteem. Kim Duncan (Kimmy Schwimmy) is the rightful and memorable center of this utterly likeable singing operation.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT MUSIC FOR KIDS AND FAMILIES!.......2005-11-02

I am always searching for great children's music. This CD is proof that there are great artists out there who are not getting the exposure other children's artists are. Our family absolutely loves this CD. Kimmy Schwimmy's music is incredibly well written. We found out by checking out her website that Kimmy Schwimmy Volume One are all songs Kimmy wrote specifically for her new preschool music curriculum. (check out her site and learn so much more about her! [...]). If you and your child are looking for great songs that teach preschool subjects, songs that are great to listen to and sing along with, and songs that you'll want to hear over and over again, buy this CD. This high-energy, borderline-goofball family trio (mother, father, and daughter) can take a little getting used to, but for those with adventurous palates, the Pizzas just might live up to their self-imposed mandate to "fill the void between Barney and Britney." Share a Smile!, the group's first outing on the Epic Kids/Sony Wonder label, doles out a dozen finely crafted pop songs, some with gentle messages ("Don't Cry About Stuff"), some stickily sentimental ("Daddy"), and some overtly designed to counteract childhood obesity rates ("Clap Your Hands & Stomp Your Feet"). The common thread is an unyielding positivity--the mother, especially, has a bounce in her voice that lends an easygoing looseness to every melody and lyric, helped along by smooth production that betrays years of experience in the grown-up music biz (she and Pizza Dad met on the TV show Star Search in the '90s and went on to write hits for the Olsen twins). If Share a Smile lacks anything, it's earthiness: those who prefer roots music should stick with Elizabeth Mitchell and Dan Zanes. For everybody else, Laughing Pizza's arrival presents plenty of reasons to get giddy about passing the parmesan. --Tammy La Gorce

It's great, the lively music puts you in a festive mood, I heard it played in a restaurant in Tel Aviv, and it made the meal even more enjoyable!

These Aussies get 4 stars because I almost never give five stars. This is one incredible guitar album. Even my lame-o stoner rock friends like it! If this don't get you playing air guitar and jumping around, you're probably dead
