    5 out of 5 stars Sounds GREAT..........2006-11-16

I am going to review many Time-Life items that I have purchased over the years - Sounds of the 70's, Sounds of the 70's (Take Two), Legends of Rock & Roll, numerous 60's CDs & 50's CDs. The recordings are excellent and I know all the tunes - most have at least 18 songs. I would recommend any of Time-Life's compilations to anyone, who is looking for a great CD with alot of songs, we all know. The only complaint I have is that the CDs should have been maximized on the 50's & 60's selections. All in all, a very good purchase...

      Album Description

The new CD from the prolific and chameleon-like modern rock quintet Transcendence is entitled Nothing is cohesive. A bold and beautiful collection of post-modern garage rockers and lush seventies-style piano ballads that the band recorded in their garage studio just may be their best effort to date. And that says a lot coming from the very prolific and experimental group that features the impassioned vocals of Ed Hale and the guitar histrionics of their well known and much respected guitarist Fernando Perdomo. Nothing is cohesive, the band's third CD, is raw, unrefined, and surges with an honest musical sensuality that is breathtaking at times. It mixes a variety of classic and modern rock styles in a surprisingly cohesive listen for how far-out the band was willing to travel in their sonic explorations to achieve something completely different from last years Sleep with you.

Transcendence has been enjoying major radio success across the country with their latest hit single "Superhero Girl," while bridging the gap between passionate new-rock with an old-school melodic seventies rock. While their over the top electrifying live performances have been taking indie-music audiences by storm, there has been a slow-brewing flurry of anticipation over their soon to be released new CD entitled Nothing is cohesive. The album's off the cuff schizophrenia has been described as `Radiohead meets Lou Reed or somewhere in between.' The new CD, which the band recorded in a garage studio with no producer on-hand, may be their most honest work to date.

Look for the documentary on the new CD by Journey of Dreams Productions due in the spring.

Standout tracks: Somebody kill the DJ, I wanna know ya, Tomorrow, Caetano, All this is beginning to feel like an ending,

5 out of 5 stars Nothing short of brilliant.......2005-05-03

The new Transcendence album Nothing Is Cohesive, their third release, is my own personal throwback to what is sacred, the music of the 60s and 70s. Ok, its 2005, I know, but you have to hear this band to understand the entire picture. They rock, no doubt about it, and they do it in such a way that you cannot resist them; you will like this band's sound. Ed Hale is a superb vocalist, sounding very much like the enigmatic U2 front man Bono at times throughout the recording.

Transcendence said a mouthful when they titled their new CD Nothing Is Cohesive. In the world we live in, one never knows what is going to happen from one minute to the next. As we become more and more unpredictable as a human race, the world that surrounds us becomes less
cohesive. Look at the CD cover; it is swirling masses of color traveling in different directions, which is not exactly an image that projects cohesiveness.

I found it interesting how they ended the album with the title track. It is an instrumental highlighted by some tasteful avant-garde keyboards. The entire album rolls right along with evocative lyrics ("Somebody Kill the DJ" & "Bored") then ends in an unusual fashion with a track like that. Proving once again that Nothing Is Cohesive, just when you expect a certain outcome, it all changes, viola! There is the concept of the album. Transcendence is one of the unsung rock bands of our generation, grinding it out day after day, and releasing quality music consistently every time they get together to record.

I love this band; their name is perfect because they transcend time and the barriers we throw up for protection. Just listen to one song and you are theirs, well at least for 45-60 minutes you are. The Beatles are an obvious influence in their sound, and that is but one element found in their sound and approach. The production aspects are notable in this
fine effort as well. This is a band with one foot in the past musically and the other is right in today. They are on top of their game in today's ultra competitive independent music scene. The "Revolution In Me" makes me want to hear this CD again and again.

5 out of 5 stars A 2005 Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band.......2005-04-24

This CD by Transcendence was just given to me by a friend who keeps up on all the latest underground and soon to be next big thing trends. I cannot believe this band. Just bought a real copy from amazon. From beginning to end I am amazed at what I am hearing. I am initially reminded of the Beatles or U2, or maybe U2 jamming with the beatles, hence the peppers reference above. Songs like Caetano and Cleopatra Ecstasy have a Beatles sound to them, but heavier. (Tomorrow is actually an old McCartney song from early seventies, but the band modernizes it. Sounds more like Coldplay now.)

Other songs are off the map entirely. There are numerous odd musical interludes interspersed within the other songs which help set a tone that you are travelling to other worlds. I wanna know ya rocks, though the lyrics are imperceptable at times and the cover gives no lyrics for it. Revolution in me is the most modern sounding track on the CD, and it could be the best except for the ballads which i will get to in a moment. This song really rocks! The vocals at the end are somewhere between Metallica and Dave Grohl, but again with the beatles backing them. Come on you will swear is from a long lost never released David Bowie album.

And then there are the ballads. Exquisite vocals, piano, guitar lines, slithering bass lines, beatlesqe drum fills, and lyrics that are so real that you will swear it is a resuscitated John Lennon doing the writing. All this is beginning and Softening are heart-wrenching.

The CD artwork is excellent by the way. More to it than meets the eye at first. You have to look a few times. Although the band will not tour for this CD from what I have read, the lead singer travels a lot and uses his own photos for the band's CD covers. I heard that this CD was recorded in Italy in a garage. This is hard to beleive it was recorded in a garage. There are pictures of Italy throughout the cover though.

If you like classic rock and pop music with an edge, I would say this is a soon to be classic.

5 out of 5 stars Transcending the garage.......2005-04-09

With the sounds that the Transcedence collective get out of a soundproofed garage filled with antique equiptment, new computer technology and walls plastered with the idols of their inspiration, I see no reason why anyone should ever step foot into a $250 an hour studio again. To break down each song and explain it away would not do justice to Nothing Is Cohesive. This is a CD to 'rock out' to and feel the emotions that no record executive could squash. Lets hope the inspiration that fueled this music lives on in future releases because as great as this CD is, I see it as just the beginning. I hear the new CD these prolific guys are currently recording is another huge step forward. Lets hope they can get themselves on the road and see if the live set lives up to the recorded masterpiece. Favorite track, Revolution in Me.

      5 out of 5 stars PERFECT!!!.......2005-04-06

Ed Hale (lead singer) and Transcendence have created another perfected blend of ear candy to intoxicate the mind, move the body, open the heart, and heal the soul. Fans will certainly be satisfied with another album with the "Transcendence Trademark" of an album with styles to fit all who listen. That is exactly what makes this album and the Transcendence prior albums so unique and exciting to listen to. You initially don't know what to expect going into the next song.... could be Rock n Roll, a romantic poem sung in many languages, or could be a tripy instrumental masterpiece. Another amazing feature on Nothing is Cohesive is the tremendous female vocals. These always add even greater depth to the already great sounds of the lead vocals and instruments on all of their albums. (Wish more music released these days had more of this element....The vibe these vocals gives reminds me of the music created by greats such as Pink Floyd, Sting, and Prince). If you listen to music by Radiohead, U2, Beck, Rufus Wainwright, David Bowie, George Harrison or John Lennon, or are into any great music from other countries, you are sure to like Nothing is cohesive, and maybe their other two albums as well. This is a sure hit and now everyone is writing about Transcendence being the next 'in band' but before they become the next 'was in band' there are plenty of fans who knew long before how great they were.

If you're looking to bring back some old memories through music, KEEP LOOKING.
I ordered this disc expecting to be taken back to younger days when these songs were the standards on the local AM radio stations. Instead, what I got sounded more like a karaoke bar. It would appear that few,if any, of these tracks are the original recordings, or even re-mastered from the originals. Upon examining the "fine print" on the back of the jewel cases, it reads, "This album may contain re-recorded tracks by the original artist. Tracks featuring groups may not include original members."
[money]- I guess it's true - you get what you pay for, although in this case, I still feel I was short-changed.

Forced to single out what, exactly, makes Barry Louis Polisar a brilliant and hilarious kids' artist, one would be hard-pressed to pick between his absurdist songwriting and his deadpan delivery. On Old Dog, New Tricks, a 1993 album so named, presumably, because of its minor canine angle ("Our Dog Bernard," "I Wanna Be a Dog," and "I've Got a Dog and My Dog's Name Is Cat" are among the 13 tracks), the choice is as challenging as ever. Consider "My Brother Thinks He's a Banana," for instance. Here, a hapless fellow "sleeps curled up in the fruit bowl" despite his grandma's protests, and turns yellow "but seems to be O.K." In fact, his fruity predicament notwithstanding, the banana brother "really is a scholar / [He's] read all the books by Bellow / Although he likes to clown around / And cut up in the Jell-O." There's also the sweet, just shy of sincere "I Need You Like a Donut Needs a Hole," in which a sheepish Polisar admits that "I need you like a peanut in a shell / Gonna hold you in my arms like water in a well." This album bubbles over with silliness--from the nonsensical "Giggle Tickle Fiddle Little Wiggle Around" to the goofy "One Day My Best Friend Barbara Turned into a Frog." Old Dog even incorporates a thought-provoking number or two, most notably "What If a Zebra Had Spots"--"What if a tiger had spots? / What if a leopard did not?" But, as usual, Polisar's believability--he may clown around, but he never seems to be putting on a condescending kiddie act--also makes this album leagues more likable than similar-minded releases. Others may try to portray "3-Toed, Triple-Eyed, Double-Jointed Dinosaurs" in song, but none will pull it off with the polished comic punch of Polisar. -- Tammy La Gorce

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great group of songs for the classroom!.......2004-02-21

Barry Polisar has a great sense of humor and students and most adults think he is hilarious! From crooning about "Underwear" to many other crazy situations, his lyrical sense of poetry is very appealing. Polisar may not be for everyone, but he certainly seems to be for children and adults with an irreverent sense of humor. Mr. Polisar came to our school for a fantastic assembly. My students really enjoyed his guitair playing, madcap lyrics and style of singing. I have never seen them laugh so hard! He has many great books of poetry out "A Little Less Noise" which the students heartily enjoyed and books such as the "The Haunted House" and "Peculiar Zoo" among others. Highly recommended, the laughter is nonstop and contagious!
