Back in 1969, Rod Stewart's résumé included a stint as Jeff Beck's singer. He'd also just joined the Faces, who dropped the "Small" from their name when Stewart and Ron Wood signed on as members. But his husky, graveled rasp shone best that year as he took on covers of the Rolling Stones' "Street Fighting Man" and Ewan McColl's "Dirty Old Town" on his solo debut. As this three-CD set thoroughly demonstrates, Stewart was like Joe Cocker in that he crossed boundaries effortlessly, integrating a boozy, acoustic-backed sway with an R&B churn and creating a new rock sound that captured the fancy of fans on both sides of the Atlantic. He peaked with Every Picture Tells a Story's title track; the folkie, soulful "Maggie May"; and the jaw-dropping "(I Know) I'm Losing You." With those 1971 hits, he arrived full-blown as a sequin-ready superstar. His Mercury period ended in 1974 with Smiler, and this set trails off with that album and five tracks previously unreleased in the U.S. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars The 'Classic' Rod The Mod.......2007-07-13

Before he even dreamed of recording the ill-fated 'Blondes Have More Fun', Rod Stewart was churning out classic after classic. This boxed set captures him at his artistic peak at Mercury Records. It includes tracks like his rendition of the Stones' 'Street Fighting Man', 'You Wear It Well', 'Reason To Believe', and, of course, the unforgettable 'Maggie May'. This boxed set also includes the malignant 'Smiler', but it doesn't mean that the album doesn't rock! Personally, this would be a great buy for me since it also includes unreleased takes and tracks. This boxed set is essential for any rock library or Rod the Mod enthusiast.

3 out of 5 stars Great music, careless remastering.......2007-02-12

As nice as it is to have all of Rod's Mercury material in one place, I have to agree with the Serbian reviewer below regarding the occasional but noticeable digital "pops" that mar what would otherwise be an excellent remastering job. What's the point of a remastering project if the end product contains obvious, irritating flaws like this? Looks like I'll be ripping the bonus tracks and selling this set off, hanging onto my individual remasters.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Set.......2006-11-28

Mercury packages and repackages songs from Rod's first five albums all the time, usually with little regard for the selections--and they normally come out when he is releasing a new CD (on another label). This set however, is different. This one makes sense, is well packaged and even contains bonus tracks. And at $28 (or so), it's actually a bargain. If you are looking back and want to know about early solo Rod Stewart, this is all you need--it contains his first five solo CDs plus a few singles. Great Stuff. Rod's career went up and down and up and down after this but this is consistently great music. Even the much harassed at the time SMILER sounds good today. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Rod Stewart's best.......2005-11-20

In my opinion these are Rod Stewart's very best songs. This is solid late 60's/early 70's style rock, pervaded by easily discernable blues influences. An excellent mix of musicians and songs to synergize with Stewart's admirably raspy vocals. Later material seems designed more to showcase Stewart's voice, wheras the powerful vocals in these songs are an element of something much bigger. If you are more a fan of the disco influenced "Do ya think I'm sexy," and later works, then you will probably disagree with me on this. I like a few of the later Rod Stewart songs too, but the oldies contained in this box-set are my absolute favorites.

3 out of 5 stars Beware of clicks and pops.......2005-09-07

Many many moons ago I have bought this CD believing that I'll enjoy listening to it completely. But every time I play it, I get an urge to write a proper review about it. Finally, I had to do it and here it is. In spite of the fantastic idea about releasing the complete Mercury studio works on 3 CDs in a deluxe package, there is a matter of a technically incorrect CDs. Along with a great music come a lots of clicks and pops, which (at least where I come from) makes a CD technically incorrect. I don't know how is it possible that no one who was checking that remastering heard that. Well.. assuming that there is someone who's checking that. And then they wonder why people burn CDs...

    4 out of 5 stars Tragic singer-songwriter.......2007-07-23

Although he was an influential personality on the 1960s folk circuit, Hardin had little success as a recording artist. He's better known as a songwriter since other artists had hits with many of his compositions.

In 1962 he recorded This Is Tim Hardin, which established his style: folk with a strong jazz and blues influence. A term like smoky folk comes to mind, a bit like the UK artist Nick Drake.

His third album, the classic Tim Hardin 2 included the powerful and evocative track Reason To Believe that, as double A Side with Maggie May, toped the British and American charts for Rod Stewart in 1971.

The folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary also recorded this song. The other classic on the album, If I Were A Carpenter, was a top ten hit for Bobby Darin. Incidentally Hardin's only hit single was a Darin composition Sing A Simple Song Of Freedom (1969).

If I Were A Carpenter was revived by The Four Tops in 1968 and by Johnny Cash and June Carter in 1970. Other artists who had hits with Hardin's songs include Johnny Mathis (Misty Roses), Scott Walker (Black Sheep Boy) and The Nice (Hang On To A Dream).

On December 29, 1980, during the recording sessions of his final work, he died of an overdose. Hardin was 39 years old and had survived his one-time contemporaries Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix by a decade.

Besides the aforementioned songs, my other favorite includes the beautiful Red Balloon. My only complaint with this compilation is that it omits Hardin's exquisite interpretation of Leonard Cohen's Bird on a Wire.

There is great beauty in Hardin's subtle but expressive vocal style. Like Nick Drake, he remains an obscure singer-songwriter with roots in the 1960s, who is well worth investigating if you like authentic, moving music.

5 out of 5 stars This is the Tim Hardin compilation to get........2007-04-17

I first came across this CD at my local library and had remembered reading that Tim was one of the greatest singer-songwriters that most people have never heard, so I took the disc home. I was blown away from moment I first heard his voice. I have a massive musical library, but I can say without reservation that Tim's my favorite singer. The man had the gift of pure expression and he truly channels both the beauty and tragedy of life every time you listen to his work.

I have a collection of his CD's now, but this is still the best compilation and the one I usually reach for. I can't imagine anyone listening to this CD and not being moved and I definitely recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Hardin At The Top Of His Game.......2002-02-09

Tim Hardin was a gifted song craftsman who led a troubled life offstage. The purity of his voice and his unique ability to convey emotion in his singing, make Hardin one of the wonders of popular music in the 1960s. His first two albums are the crown jewels of his recorded legacy. The understated arrangements of the first two albums make him the progenitor of what we now call chamber pop. If you don't beleive that listen to the arrangements and vocals of Stuart Staples of Tindersticks.

This Polydor collection of Tim Hardin trumps any of the more expensive anthologies, simply because it contains material only from Tim Hardin 1 and Tim Hardin 2. You don't have to pay big bucks to get a bunch of songs from his later works, many of which are overproduced and wallow in pathos. If you like Jeff Buckley, Nick Drake or Tindersticks, give this album a listen. His nakedly emotional vocals, his tender song writting and the shimmering production values will seduce you.

5 out of 5 stars Reason To Believe (The Best of).......2001-08-05

As the previous reviewer stated, this album is awesome. However, the rendition of Reason To Believe was best done by The Youngbloods in the late 60's.

I find myself pulling this CD out often. The tunes are short, simple, melodic and to the point.

5 out of 5 stars tim hardin, reason to believe (the best of).......2001-03-08

i ordered this cd just to hear the man who wote reason to beleive. (for rod stuart) holly cow! where has this guy been all my life?this is a major artist in every sense of the word. his haunting voice and sparce arrangments really let him tell his stories, mechancoly as they may be. if i were a carpenter brings tears to my eye no matter how many times i play it. every song on this collection is a true gem. i highly recomend it, as i can't live without it. shakey jake key west fl.

Blimey! England's finest bring us a rock record of epic proportions! The 'Tone's most far-reaching and ambitious work so far, it covers full-throttle punk, stadium rock bombast, dubbed-up white-boy-reggae, wistful cockney whimsy, and all points in between. (Hey, somebody's gotta be The Clash nowadays, right?) Featuring ex-Schwartzeneggar & Thatcher On Acid!
