5 out of 5 stars loveliest christmas music ever.......2007-07-18

This is on my playlist all year. I've never heard anything else that so beautifully captures the flavor of Christmas, in a way that brings to mind all of the richness, warmth, simplicity and sanctity of the medieval celebration. The flavor is not secular. This is just like drinking a steaming hot spiced wine in a cabin with a fireplace and a stone church visible from the window, full of meaning and warmth. The singing and instrumentation are really something else.

5 out of 5 stars Great Medieval Music.......2007-01-09

I was looking for something in the way of holiday music that was also medieval and this fits the bill! Most of the tunes are ones I recognized and some I didn't but they were all well done and fun to listen to. A great addition to my holiday music collection!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Medieval Christmas CD--Ever!.......2004-01-01

What a find this remarkable CD is! If you love authentic Medieval music, played with the authentic instruments of its time and sung in the same way that a nobleman's court of the 14th or 15th Century might have heard it--this is the one for you. Beth and Barry Hall, both very gifted musicians, offer the finest collection of European Medieval carols I have yet found, and I have a large collection of the music of this period. A Bravissima performance to be savored all year round. Good Lords and Ladies all, grab this one!

5 out of 5 stars feast of sopngs.......2003-12-19

The best medieval holiday music yet! A trip through time, and so well done. I have listened to many others, and this one rates the best! I am looking forward to their next release!

5 out of 5 stars Very Nice!.......2003-01-15

I have been listening to this album for two Christmas seasons and never seem to tire of it. The instrumental pieces are very well done, beautifully providing delicate, intricate harmonies. The vocal numbers are equally well done. There is a nice selection of songs, some familiar to the modern listener, and some providing a good introduction to medieval music. This is Christmas music for all ages.

Album Description

Hagopian is a virtuoso on the 'ud (oud), a principal instrument of Armenian, Turkish, and Arab musical traditions. Included in his repertory are both Armenian classical and folk styles, which in the U.S. have received little exposure outside of the Armenian community. This National Heritage Fellowship award winner and his small ensemble perform 13 brilliant selections. "Serenity and dignity on first hearing.... Behind that veil, however...tension and passion smoulder in the deep." -Wereldmuziek Update

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Another disc that helped open the world for me.......2003-04-14

This was the cd that introduced me to the fantastic Hagopians, both Richard (oud, vocals) and his son Harold ( kanun, violin). It's Richard's name on the album but do not overlook his brilliant son. Richard and Harold are easily one of the best "father & son" sets of musicians in the world today. This disc also has Hagop Jack Zarzatian on dumbeg.

I agree with the previous reviewers take on Richard being one of the worlds best oud players, but considering that some of the other oud players she/he mentioned are dead, I think that makes Richard rank even higher in terms of THIS world. =)

Although I must admit, no "best oud player" list is complete without also including Hamza El Din.

I don't think this cd is as completely excellent as another Hagopian-related cd I reviewed yesterday, Gypsy Fire, but on the other hand, when music is this good that still isn't anything to complain about. Obviously I loved this cd enough for it to make me purchase Gypsy Fire in the first place.

If you're familiar with Armenian music then just know that this cd is another excellent example of it. If you're not familiar with it, and words being flawed, I'd just say it may strike you as some sort of excellent realm between Eastern European and Middle Eastern music. Yes I know, that is brutally vague, but there is really only so much that words will ever do (very little) to convey the feel, sound, or intensity of any given music.

I love this disc, and that's what it ultimately comes down to.

5 out of 5 stars Armenian Oud Colossus.......2001-04-16

Richard Hagopian is one of the world foremost oud players along with Munir Bashir from Iraq, Simon Shaheen from Palestine, Rabih-Abou Khalil from Lebanon, Anouar Brahem from Tunisia and another great Armenian master from Turkey - Udi Hrant Kelkulian. This album is an excellent collection of Armenian folk songs and it will add a great deal to any CD collection of folk music. Favourite track - YARIMO.

5 out of 5 stars Lesser heard Hanson pieces.......2006-11-04

If you love Howard Hanson, you will love these lesser heard works. Always up to the highest Hanson standards, each piece uses a different vehicle and different approaches to its subject. Yet each is unmistakably Hanson.

4 out of 5 stars A Collection of Second Tier Hanson Works.......2005-06-16

Perhaps I'm mostly responding to the other reviewer who heaped praise on the Organ and Harp Concerto. I bought this CD mostly because of interest in this work. The organ and the harp are two of my favorite instruments in an orchestral setting. Two of my favorite symphonies include Khachaturian's Third and Copland's First, both which feature the organ. Here the composers understand the dynamics of the organ in an orchestral setting. And it works!

Hanson's organ does not.

Yes, indeed there are some beautiful passages in the concerto, and some garbage to sift through as well. But the organ is not the right instrument for the work. It is the opposite of the right instrument for this work. A little rearranging, and this concerto could be one of Hanson's best works. The organ immitates lines that could easily be taken by some brass and woodwind sections. These sections are precisely what this concerto is missing. It lacks variety, and the organ seems like filler. Would someone PLEASE arrange this concerto with brass and woodwind sections and remove the organ? Maybe take his good ideas and combine them with good transitions also.

The other works are additional treats. The Nymphs and Satyr are certainly standard Hanson works, calling upon the same sort of passionate romanticism found in his first few symphonies.

His last four choral works have some merit, but the choir quality could stand to be tweaked a bit (as seems to be the case in many American choral works recordings, especially Randall Thompson's).

If you own a few Hanson symphonies, such as Delos' set of symphonies, and are looking for more Hanson, this is a good place to start. But don't expect the same sort of Hanson genius found in, say, the second through fourth symphones.

Album Description

"Mirror of the Middle Ages" is TSBB's latest foray into the world of the ancient medieval past. Originally published in a limited edition vinyl format one year earlier, this CD edition represents the band's sixth official full-length release. This CD edition also differs from the original vinyl edition, in that it features a different track listing and design. Notable is the electronic and bombastic contemporary version of "Palistinalied (21st Century Remix)." "Mirror of the Middle Ages" is composed of several original works as well as a variety of traditional pieces interpreted by the band, ranging from the early medieval period all the way up to the Renaissance, while expressing both the sacred and the profane. In total, it is indeed a summary of past times to be relived.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, obscure CD.......2003-05-12

If you've always wondered what the difference is between a rebec and a viol, or a cornett and a sackbut, this is the CD set for you. The two CDs are well-paced with solo examples of each instrument and lots of "real" music--repertoire from the correct periods, played very musically by musicians of Musica Reservata. Martin Bookspan's NPR voice is perfect for this kind of narration, too. [The price] is a bit steep, but this is a unique set for anybody seriously interested in early music.

Album Description

Ten years in the making, The Music of Islam series recorded in Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey, Yemen, Pakistan, Indonesia, Iran and Qatar represents the most comprehensive sound documentation available to Westerners today, of a world religion dating back to 1/622. Although governed by strict rules for fourteen centuries, contact with other cultures has radically affected Islamic music throughout history. As the world enters the XV/21st century the timing of this collection serves an even larger purpose, documenting the traditions that have survived and will continue to survive for centuries to come. Today, one fifth of the world's population, one billion people, are Muslims, occupying a large territory stretching from the Atlantic shore of north and west Africa, through west, central, and south Asia to island southeast Asia, and attracting an increasing following in India, western Europe, north America, east Asia, and southern Africa. This is a global presence which cannot be ignored.

This volume focuses on the mystic music of the Islamic world - specifically Turkish mystics. To Westerners, Islamic mysticism is practically synonymous with Sufism. Sufi poetry and music have endured for centuries in various Islamic countries. In the mystical brotherhoods music always had a revered and acknowledged place. Although the term music is never used in mystical writings, but rather listening - voice, gesture and musical instruments are all aids to the devotee in his spiritual exercise, which leads him to ecstasy and to supreme union with God. In every case, the music draws its inspiration from the text, and its structure from a sophisticated set of modes, rhythms, and traditional forms.

The tracks on this recording literally date from the V-XIV/11th-20th centuries featuring many famous compositions such as Tekbir and Salavat-i Serife, known throughout the Islamic world as two of the masterworks of one of Turkey's greatest composers. Also featured are ilahis (hymns), excerpts of the sema ritual and dhikr (zikr in Turkey) ceremonies. Completing the volume is a vocal performance of Surah 19, Ayet 115-117 of the Qur'an.

5 out of 5 stars exquisite simplicity and piety.......2003-01-09

This collection of Sufi music is superb; as the liner notes explain, Turkish music reflects the history of its relationship with Central Asia, and also the influence of Persian classical form with its elegance and purity, a combination which perhaps to the Western ear might sound extremely foreign.
I find this fourteenth CD of the magnificent "Music of Islam" series to be soul-stirring and uplifting. If you enjoy this type of music, it is an ideal recording to minimize the din and sensory overload of the 21st century world.

These mystic Sufi hymns are sung with much beauty and piety, and with the backing of classical art music instruments, which are: The nay (oblique flute), with its whispery sound, the tanbur (a long-necked lute), the qanun (a type of zither), the kamanche (fiddle), and kundum (drums).

Some of the songs use the poetry of the great Rumi, and others chant the holy names of God; of my very favorites, track 8 is a liturgical piece by Rumi used to begin religious celebrations, and the final track is a recitation that is a fitting ending for this exquisite CD. To quote the liner notes: "The concluding prayer is chanted in a way that blurs the distinction between speech and song", and it is from the Qur'an: "East or West, it all belongs to God; wherever you turn God is there".

The musicians are from the Galata Mevlevi Music and Sema Ensemble who are based in Turkey, where this recording was made.
The presentation on all 16 CDs (including the sampler) of this Celestial Harmonies series is exceptional. This one has a 48 page booklet with extensive history, detailed explanation of each musical piece, recording info, and more. Total time is 63'56.

4 out of 5 stars A Trip Back in Time.......2001-12-04

The songs on this recording are among the finest of the genre. Sadly, most Turks today would be incapable of understanding the deeply moving lyrics, so many changes have been forced on the Turkish language and society in the past 75 years.

While I found a certain "wooden" feeling to the performance, I also appreciate that a major problem the artist constantly faces is the preservation of a cultural artifact from the past. How could an artist "lighten" (or worse, "modernize") the performance without violating the art-form's integrity?

Several tracks moved my Turkish friends and me deeply.

4 out of 5 stars Historic De Sabata from Naxos -new issue at great price........2003-09-29

While thoroughly agreeing with my learned collegue from Australia
re. the magical Pastoral Symphony, I would like to briefly draw attention to the other works on this disc, you are not likely to hear anywhere else.
The main drawing card for me in buying this record was Mossolov's Iron Foundry, I heard when I was about 8 years old at a concert in Hungary (1946). I haven't heard it ever since. It is a Soviet neo-realistic work, extremely interesting, creating the cacophony
of an a foundry in full action with shuffling, screeching, banging
and hissing noises ever increasing in volume as the 4 odd minute work
proceeds. Yet it is entirely musical: within a minute or so a memorable brass theme emerges somehow pulling the piece together. This work was lately discovered by Riccardo Chailly who recorded it.( Note: Honegger's Pacific 231 is of similar ilk)
Stravinsky's Fireworks is an early effort (Op.4), quite brilliant,
but still under the influence of Dukas and the French Impressionism, played with dazzling flair. The Glazunov pieces are lovely, romantic and melodic - most enjoyable.
Sabata's own symphonic poem "Juventus" is quite an accomplishment, though
influences of Richard Strauss and Korngold are noticeable, it is an interesting rarity. It wasn't ignored in it's time since Victor de Sabata started out as being a composer, but went into conducting instead as
Toscanini's disciple. Both Toscanini and Richard Strauss liked and conducted this piece.
De Sabata was a remarkable conductor, similar to Toscanini, with iron will and great outbursts of temper, though I find him with perhaps more flexible and great intuition in getting to the essence of the works.
I think this record is a good example of his genius. It may be mentioned the he conducted the orchestra at Toscanini's funeral.
An excellent document, most enjoyable performances. Sound is
restored by Naxos engineers is quite good under the circumstances.

The recording project that has ensured that Italian conductor Victor de Sabata’s name is familiar to 21st Century collectors is the 1953 “Tosca” with Callas, di Stefano, and Gobbi. Naxos has now reissued another of his great recordings. Following its release in the late 1940s, Sabata’s recording of Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony gained extraordinary acclaim. Reviewing all available versions, the authors of the prestigious “Record Guide”, after expressing great affection for recordings by Toscanini and Bruno Walter, judged this Sabata recording to be “the best”.

Produced by Walter Legge, it was recorded in the Rome Santa Cecilia Academy, where it was found that the best results were obtained when the orchestra was seated at the back rather than the front of the hall.

This is a “Pastoral” of extreme delicacy and refinement. Every main statement is perfectly judged as to rhythm and phrasing. Every line of filigree work and every accompanying figure is polished and perfectly placed. Never before have I noticed that the subsiding of the thunderstorm is actually some of the most magical rather than some of the tritest pages in the symphony.

Collectors who are skeptical of historic reissues, doubting that 78 sides can ever be invisibly joined or that surface hiss can ever be eradicated, will find no grounds for complaint here. Neither problem occurs: the joining is seamless, and the hiss is inaudible even when the signal is very very quiet.

Other reviewers might care to comment on the remaining items offered on this Naxos reissue. They comprise early items from de Sabata’s small recorded legacy, including one of his own compositions. It is to the “Pastoral” however, that I shall be returning, believing that quite possibly it is still “the best”.

5 out of 5 stars Three Stages of Glazunov.......2007-05-18

I adore Glazunov's music, mostly because he combines the Russian nationalist approach of Rimsky, Borodin, etc., with the stereotypically Germanic love of strucutre, argument, and form. Admittedly, he doesn't always succeed in this mixture, and he falls short of his great inheritors--not as "Russian" as Rimsky, perhaps, and not as polished as a Mendelssohn or Tchaikovsky. Yet in his best works he is completely unique, even when he sounds derivative(!), and his music really holds up with repeated listenings. He had an eternal curiosity about music, and was consistently inspired to express his ideas in new forms, often blurring the line between symphonic poem, suite, and symphony.

The works on this excellent disc outline his three major periods, and portray him at his most inspired throughout. The opening work is a relatively early one, full of the overwhelming ambition of a young composer out to write a really big work. The Kremlin is this work, a three movement suite (of symphonic proportions) that captures the pomp, majesty, mystery, and solitude of this ancient landmark. Masterful writing for the orchestra abounds, particularly in the haunting second movement, which creates the rapt atmosphere of a religious ceremony.

The two symphonic poems, The Lyric Poem and the Epic Poem, bookmark his entire career. The former is simply a gentle piece of overflowing Romanticism, and one of his most inspired lyric creations. It reminds us that, for all his faults, he could truly create a melody and make it sing. The Epic Poem, published posthmously, is quite a differnet affair--more turbulent, questing, and ambigious; it suggests a struggle unresolved, and a composer who even in his last years was still growing, albeit within a late nineteenth century framework.

The true masterpiece here is From The Middle Ages, another symphonic suite, yet one that shows more subtlety and sophistication than The Kremlin. I adore the opening movement, a storm sequence surrounding a truly inspired melody, suggesting two medieval lovers entombed in a castle away from the howling winds (a little like Tchaikovsky's Francesca di Rimini in spirit). A truly unique scherzo follows, which I think is perhaps his greatest piece of music--truly characteristic. The brief slow moving is haunting and even more lyric than the Lyric Poem. The finale is more pompous, evoking "The Crusaders" as they march to Jerusalem...but it's full of powerful horns and another memorable theme which flows through the orchestra in various guises.

Krimets is my favorite conductor in Naxos' Glauznov series, as he balances the Romantic rhetoric to make it "sound" and let it breathe. He never lets the music seem schmaltzy, shallow, or pointless. True, I prefer Jarvi whenever possible, particularly in From the Middle Ages, but this is a glorious Glazunov disc, as is Krimets' other offering, showcasing Stenka Razin, the Mazurka, etc. Buy it with pleasure and stop badmouthing a true Russian master (especially if you only know him from the Seasons--one of his least characteristic works).

    5 out of 5 stars A very enjoyable purchase.......2007-05-13

You may note a bit of a disconnect between the two sections that describe this album. A more thorough list: (1) from the Uppsala Manuscript comes the 1st and 3rd cuts - Orkney Weddung Song and Hymn to St. Magnus (2) from the St. Andrews music book comes the 2nd, 4th and 5th cuts - Sanctus, Alleluya and Lux et gloria (3)from The Art of Music (anonymous 13th century) comes cuts 6 thru 10 (4) The Carver Choirbook gives us cut 11 by Robert Carver, mid 16th century and (5) the Straloch Lute Book gives us the (abridged) romance Graysteil.

This is the album that introduced me to Robert Carver - there are three splendid cds of his work recorded. The title piece Graysteil, tho abridged to 18+ minutes is one of the best introductions to sung epic poetry recorded. The Orkney Island pieces are particularly fascinating as the islands were still under Norwegian rule. The Art of Music was a response to the repression of music that arose with the Protestant sentiments.

Great music and a great reminder of history. This album is well worth listening to - again and again.
