5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

      5 out of 5 stars Tremendous Trio!.......2006-06-20

I first encountered TS when they opened up for my fave band of all time, Los Amigos Invisibles, in Baltimore back in Feb. 2005. I arrived late, and I was kicking myself for it. Lead man Christian Ulrich energizes the entire room with his presence -- booming vocals and powerful drums. But the mixture of Ulrich, Ethan White (keyboards) and Jason Kriveloff (bass) as a whole is a simple, yet perfect blend resulting in a unique funky, jazzy, dancey sound.

The only tune on this disc that *didn't* tickle my fancy (much) is "You Found a Way." But that's just me. This leaves nine songs out of ten that I can't get enough of. I constantly put this disc on while driving, and at home when I'm working on the computer. The album gets more infectious with repeated listenings. "How's Your Life?" is my favorite (an easy choice), followed by the close seconds "Why" and "Enjoy it Now." "Epic" is an all-instrumental offering that reminds me a lot of early non-vocal Level 42 tunes (say, like "43").

This disc gets my highest recommendation. And, if you get a chance to see TS in person, don't pass up the opportunity!

5 out of 5 stars Addictive Dance Club Rhythms.......2005-07-26

We saw TS on a warm summer evening early in July at an outdoor venue during the Montreal Jazz Festival. What a treat for a large appreciative crowd! Just three members in the group but they are flawlessly compatible with wall to wall sound. Drummer and lead vocalist John-Christian Urich, keyboardist Ethan White and bassist Jason Kriveloff staged this summery magic. Urich startled me, a first timer, when he suddenly rose to a falsetto voice during "I Might Do Something Wrong". It's the first and arguably signature track on this disc, although "How's Your Life", my personal favorite, and "Why" are so addictive they demand repetitive play. This is a relentlessly hard driving urban dance club band with layers of R&B and Soul. A club band that loses nothing under the stars. Let's hope TS continues to surprise.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing live band!!!.......2005-06-17

I recently saw them perform live at Drive-In Studios in NYC as part of DJ Language's "Real Music for Real People" series. I was instantly moved to buy their album based upon their performance. This album is great, feel-good, happy soul music. It really can alter your mood on a bad day. If you get to see them live, DO IT!!! They were amazing!

      5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2005-04-22

OFF THE CHAIN, tried of hearing that word, this trio is off the chain, off the chain off the chain. As soon as I heard the first cut I was hooked and not only that, the whole CD is good to the last drop, people you will not loan, borrow or even let you best friend touch this CD, it sounds like gold, you will love and charish this one for a long time.

5 out of 5 stars This band is the truth.......2005-04-16

I don't write too many reviews on Amazon but this band is something else. I haven't heard super-funky tracks like this is a very, very long time. The music has more grooves than the Brand New Heavies' joints. You won't be disappointed with this one.

Well here is that new link to what Aretha was doing. I saw this young Lady live and as she sat at the piano and belted out her songs it reminded me of when Aretha would sit at the piano and do the same. Angela vocals are amazing without over singing. Gospel, the blues, jazz, real soul music is alive and well in this woman.

5 out of 5 stars Criminally unknown Artist creates a brilliant Debut.......2003-05-29

The world of music today is a very sad one. Those with a thing called TALENT are so often ignored in a world where popularity stakes and the bottom line are what is most important to a major record label and thus the public at large.

Angela Johnson's debut album, along with recent releases by Peven Everett and the slightly more popular Donnie show that some of the best music today is happening not on the pop charts, but in a more talented underground scene.

Angela is a highly talented singer, songwriter and musician remeniscent in skill to Babyface in writing love songs with a story while her sound is like a female Musiq mixed with Alicia Keys and the new funky Babyface. The album's best tracks are those that let her show her writing skills such as "Sad Days", "Call" and "I Still Care".

This is probably one of the best Soul albums I have purchased in recent months and it is a shame that so many people are missing out on her talent. What makes it so much worse is that she actually does have the talent, songwriting abilities and good looks to make it big, but in the world we live in today, a talent like hers is not always appreciated. All I can say it that I feel like someone who has stumbled upon a rare gem and I am glad to own this album.

It sounds a bit like old Incognito mixed with Raw Stylus, but the sound is still original. "Wait 4 U" has to be one of the most swingin' spiritual love songs I've heard in a year. "Don't be Afraid" and "Motions" really set the tone for the album -- makes you shake your rump even if you don't wanna. Get this album...

        5 out of 5 stars it's got soul, and that's the purpose.......2002-06-19

Alex Bugnon's albun "Soul Purpose" has the makings of a contemporary jazz classic; not because any one of the songs is extarordinary, but because all the songs are worth listening. Bugnon's keyboard and writing skills have increased consistently with each release and "Soul Purpuse" is no exception. It's soulful and jazzy, and even has a gospel edge ("Changes").

The title track has a definate Memphis soul influence, with noticeably fuller instrumentation than the other tracks. The remake of Bugnon's own "Around 12:15 AM" (from his first album "Love Season"), which starts the album, is elegant and fresher than the original. The only disappointment is "EWF," a trbute to R&B group Earth Wind & Fire that exudes little of their influence. But even that song is worthy of a listen.

        5 out of 5 stars Awesome!!.......2002-02-07

This is truly one of Mr. Bugnon's best! It reminds me of some of his earlier releases. Thanks Alex for the smooth (with a hint of funk) grooves.

4 out of 5 stars Pushing the business forward.......2001-12-09

First a word of praise for Michael Conrader who recorded and mixed this album - it has one of the best keyboard sounds that I've heard in a long time, and absolutely defines the kind of sound that Alex Bugnon was clearly aiming for. The best tracks on this album are excellent. I particularly like "Night Groove" ( where he acknowleges a debt to Rodney Franklin) a dark and brooding piece; "Strollin'" which captures a mood, and "Changes" which has an authentic gospel-blues feel. The version of "In a sentimental mood" is a straight ahead piano piece, and "Can't get you out of my mind" has some lovely organ work (courtesy of David Delhomme) and underpinning vocals from Arthur Rogiers. What doesn't work for me on the album are the drum sounds from Poogie Bell, which on some tracks sound a bit leaden - particularly on "Walking In Rhythm" where the excellent keyboard work seems to be held back by the live drum sound.Perhaps what the album needed most was a little more editing- but it contains enough innovation to be able to report that Alex Bugnon is still pushing the business forward.

        4 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2001-11-07

Hey, it's Jazzman, coming to review Alex's new cd. I just bought it Tuesday afternoon. This cd is excellent. It's got a nice rhythmic mixture of songs on it. The first song, "Around 12:15 AM", is tight and Love Song #2 is very nice, mellow!! All you jazz listeners, buy Alex's new cd. You will definitely enjoy it. Coming to you live from Washington D.C., it's The Jazzman keeping it real. Remember....Keep on Jazzin:-)!!!

5 out of 5 stars Come on people.......2004-12-14

come on people, all of KJs CDs were off the hook, this one just had more silly then serious. TC dropped some awesome stuff along with KJs usual awesomeness! if u wont buy this CD because u think it isnt as good as the others, its only ure loss

        5 out of 5 stars wor'D'ship.......2004-11-14

one thing i can say about KJ, he's definetly got some mad skills, and he keeps it real on the GOD front. my favorite album of his is definetly 7th AVE. i mean his other releases were still great, but until this album dropped 7th AVE took it home for me. i think maybe it was the more serious feel for the messages. (not all light hearted). this album still is light hearted throughout, but thats nice. im not puttin it down. the best thing to be said about KJ's flows are that they are always GOD centered, and this album all but proves that. this lifts THE NAME more than any other on every track. its not about them and thats clear. TC and KJ definetly make a great combo and they have proven just that time and time before on previous projects together. TC'leezy' brings the most bangin tracks EVER!! on this side of hip hop or mainstream. I was gonna rate this a very strong '4' for the theme and overall message of the album, but i have to throw down a '5' cuz TC's track mastering skillz take any album to the extreme. if you havent checked out the "BEATMART MIXTAPE" then you must!!! pick this album up! you dont have to be solely in to christian rap to respect talent and gifts like this throwin it up to were respect is due. PEACE!!

5 out of 5 stars Finally someone gave KJ some tight beats.......2004-11-05

I do not want to knock on the previous reviewers because I know that you are probably Christians just like I am and the last thing we need is bickering amongst the people of Christ, but I am confused on what CD you are listening to. I have all of KJ's previous CD's and this is by far the best one he has released. This is the one project were he has the tight beats to go with dope lyrics. KJ always keeps it real even in the midst of adversity. Keep on rockin' brotha Five Two and I will keep on buying.

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad As A Whole.......2004-09-07

This cd isnt bad but it aint awesome either. Its just well....good. Its a good listen. No real standout tracks here. (though the last 2 break the mold, not counting the last song without KJ) The songs are short about 2-3 minutes with the chorus being repeated at the end for another minute. The intermissions were okay but could have been better. The music was pretty good, some songs better than others. I think that this project was probably rushed, maybe by KJ because his Peace Of Mind album was great though i understand these musical styles differ. All in all this cd can not be broken up into parts to like it. If you listen to this cd as one song or as one piece its good. This cds strength? Great groovin music to listen to as you and your girl or friend talk in the car.

4 out of 5 stars Funny but Lacking.......2004-09-07

This CD marks KJ-52's latest group effort, not with his rock band Peace of Mind but with T. Cleazy. This disc delivers humorous, but somewhat bland tracks. The songs all sound nice, with a new funk/R&B twist thanks to the Cleazster, but all share a basic message- Become a Christian, don't give up. Ultimately, this CD isn't bad, but Christians wanting to sample KJ's music should get one of his 3 previous solo rap albums since this disc contains mostly quick cuts and funny interludes. A great buy for any KJ fan, but not much for newcomers to his awsome hip-hop ministry. Buy it if you like KJ's music; otherwise, skip it and buy "Collaborations" or "It's Pronounced Five Two" instead.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST !!!.......2006-01-21

Esoteric & 7L been doin this for a long dam time,, and for a long dam time they should had been called the DON of hip-hop easy,, to easy for them to blow off punchline main stream crap hop, cause this is is real hip-HOP 7L & Esoteric.

        4 out of 5 stars Actually 4.5 Stars, Hip-Hop For Real Heads.......2005-07-02

This is hip-hop for true fans of the art. It doesn't get any more dope than this! These guys will never be commercial, not that commercial rap is all bad, but this is REAL. Esoteric's rhymes will keep you hitting the rewind button! His lyrical style is comparable to Inspectah Deck's (which makes an appearance on this album) and Rakim's in delivery. Not saying he rhymes like Rakim, but just the way the words are presented in the multi-layered pattern within the verse (like Deck does also). This style may not be suitable for those who like simplicity. Eso delivers each rhyme like a punch line to the dome! His style is aggressive and witty, intellegence mixed with old school. This album has very few flaws. 7L's beats are incredible, seemingly too powerful to fly under the radar. This album is fresh, even as I write this review four years after the fact. Four years from now it will still be some of the best hip-hop around. After you buy this check out DC (Dangerous Connection) and DC2 (Bars of Death). Well worth it!

4 out of 5 stars soul purpose showed potential.......2005-06-08

This album is definately not as good as DCI and DCII but it showed 7l potential as a producer and esoteric's potential as a lyricist.

If you hear this album and then the aformentioned ones you can easily hear how 7l and eso have developed into a dope tandom.

The problem with eso on this ablum is that he eats his words so much that sometimes its hard to undestand what he's saying but he does rip it on a lot of tracks like My Rhyme PartII when he does a Run Dmc type of rap to an old eighties type beat

there a alot of fun tracks on this album to keep your head nodding and eventhough this isn't 7l and eso's best ablum it is still better than most other hiphop today

        1 out of 5 stars 7l and esoteric sucks.......2005-04-22

you know, there is a ton of underground or whatever rap out there that, while it may not actively suck like g unit, is just sopping with mediocrity. they have one beat that i have heard that is ok, 'piece of the pie,' and even in that song the lyrics are still garbage, these guys have no content, wordplay, so fuqk their whole operation, u want better non mainstream rap go with like gravediggaz, j-live, last emperor, kool keith as doctor octagon. ps atmosphere, aesop rock, and mf doom suck balls save for a handful of songs. and if u read up to this point fuqk you too.
