5 out of 5 stars John Rutter Collection is glorious!.......2007-07-23

This music begins my day in uplifting way. Each day a different piece catches my attention. I am so glad to have it.

5 out of 5 stars John Rutter Collection.......2007-02-19

This CD is one of several that features Rutter directing his own choir. It has a good cross section of the John Rutter compositions, and is a good starting place for someone who has not heard Rutter's music before. I think you will be "hooked" if you really love choral music.

4 out of 5 stars Typically gorgeous Rutter.......2005-12-20

I love John Rutter's music. Especially the "For the Beauty of the Earth" that is on this CD. Rutter is not the most inventive or varied composer of modern music, but if you have a taste for traditional choral writing with some angelic children's chorus singing, then you will probably share my enjoyment of Rutter's writing. Unfortunately I cannot give this CD 5 stars when it seems there is a drum set tapping annoyingly away on several of the songs. I do not understand this at all and am bothered by it every time I listen to those songs. It's a shame, because otherwise I love the music, and think it is lushly written, and simply but beautifully performed. I would highly suggest listening to sample track 3 before purchasing -- you can hear what sounds like a ride-cymbal right at the very end of the sample. This sound occurs in several of the songs on this recording.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2005-12-03

I am a huge John Rutter fan. The lilting melodies, the poignant lyrics and the lush orchestrations make his music not only accessable but also uplifting. This compilation, although drawing from many other previous recordings, is a great composite of his wirk. The sound is exquisite. Even if you own other recordings of this music, this is worthwhile.

5 out of 5 stars To sample Rutter's best music, this is the one........2005-06-30

I purchased this CD as an introduction to the music of John Rutter and went on to purchase many more of his compositions. Still, this remains my favorite collection. It is choral music at its absolute finest. Far from "just church music", this CD has songs of faith, a few Christmas carols, a Celtic song for lovers, and even a child's tune or two. While most of the pieces are peaceful, warm, and thought-provoking, a few are up-tempo and lively. In my opinion, it is a perfectly balanced collection in which one song flows beautifully into the next with no sense of a jarring change of pace. If you have any interest in choral music, begin with the best...John Rutter... and this superb arrangement. Highly recommended.

Album Description

May 12, 2005 UPDATE: The Ease of Being CD has now been re-mastered for improved audio quality.

The soothing voice and deeply relaxing music on the Ease of Being restore a centered state of awareness and support healing. The meditations encourage trust in the natural flow of life, leading to greater physical, mental and emotional ease. The instructions suggest that you "…simply allow the words and music to wash over you… It is not necessary to understand, or even hear, all the words". Instead of asking you to focus on specific instructions or images, these meditations gently guide the mind to relax completely. In this relaxed state, healing can happen naturally and effortlessly.

Once referred to as "meditations without borders", the Ease of Being does not represent any particular tradition. It gives you the freedom to relax into your own, unique healing journey. One customer stated, "These meditations are unique - you can just float with them". If you listen with an open mind and heart, The Ease of Being can take you straight to the "heart of healing"!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2007-07-24

This CD and others from the same folks have been a great help to me. I work at a high stress job I love, but often at work had trouble keeping myself on an even keel. I would get upset or bent out of shape fairly easily. Meditation was suggested by my doctor, but my mind flies around too much to do it on my own. These guided meditation CDs are wonderful!!! I sit in my car at lunch and listen daily. They are very easy to listen to and use. I find myself so relaxed, I actually doze off! My boss has even complimented me on my sudden ability to remain in control...almost nothing gets under my skin anymore!

5 out of 5 stars Works Better the Longer You Use It.......2007-06-13

When I first listened to this CD I wasn't sure if it was helping me to relax. But as I continued to use it I began to notice a calming and soothing effect that continued afterward. It has now become a favorite of mine for chilling out and also as a prelude to a great night's sleep. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Gentle yet remarkably effective.......2007-06-05

Mary's meditations have been a great help to me during a time when life has been difficult. She advises to "let the words wash over you" and that works well when I don't try to focus on the specific words but just relax and let whatever happen. The music is also extremely soothing (check out Richard's CD:Pure Light: Music for Meditation & Relaxation). Overall a wonderful way to kick back and distance myself from all the craziness.

4 out of 5 stars Fall Asleep While Listening.......2007-05-22

I got this for stress issues, but every time I listen to it I can't get past the first few minutes without falling asleep. Very relaxing voice and music!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Guided Meditations.......2007-05-09

There are many guided meditation tapes available out there. For me, this is one of the best, although I imagine different approaches/voices/styles work better for different people. The Ease of Being is unique in that it gently guides you to a place of less effort and a letting go of the need to control. This results in a very deep and relaxing experience. I also feel the music enhances the effect of relaxation, allowing the listener to "float" away to a peaceful place.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps THE Seminal Hard Rock Album.......2007-06-24

In terms of MOST IMPORTANT '70's CDS, I'd only place Rainbow Rising and perhaps Black Sabbath's Master of Reality on a par with this album. As far as influencing the neo-classical genre, this album is THE seminal prototype of the genre. Zeppelin was far more folk/blues, and Black Sabbath were concerned more with creating a new genre (you know which).

It's doubtful there would have been Scorpions, UFO, Van Halen, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Yngwie Malmsteen, Vinnie Moore, Dio. or pretty much ANY "hair metal" band from the '80's without this release. I realize the benefits of "hair metal" are disputed (I certainly dispute them), but it was an obviously influential genre (particuarly in terms of guitar playing).

As great as their later release, Machine Head, was and is, this is FAR harder, and keyboardist Jon Lord's influence from the great Classical Composer Gustav Mahler is evident on many of the tracks. Just in terms of overall music composition and scheme, his release never sounds overly removed form the early 2oth century wave of Viennese "Atonal" masterpieces (see Arnold Schoenberg's mid-period, Anton Webern, etc).

Don't miss this, even if you're not "wild" about hard rock. This is an essentia; ROCK album, and it would astonish me to hear too many protests over that assertion.

5 out of 5 stars Calling all Old Rockers!.......2007-05-14

Deep Purple in Rock, gotta be a favorite for any old heavy metal rocker, but you know I think that the younger rocker too may enjoy this, as its hard core rock, not to be listend to lightly, be prepared to hurt your ears, coz this one should be played very loud! enjoy. A+++++

4 out of 5 stars One of my favorites, with reservations. . ........2007-04-28

Don't get me wrong: I LOVE DEEP PURPLE. They were my first fave hard rock band, and at least eight of their LPs still get my fingers moving and my steering wheel banging! And IN ROCK is one of those. My only beef is that the guys never have given props to the San Fransisco band IT'S A BEAUTIFUL DAY. That band's first LP was released in 1969, a full year before IN ROCK. Now, given Purple's predilection for Progressive Rock flourishes within a hard rock framework, listen to the song "Bombay Calling" from the first IT'S A BEAUTIFUL DAY album, and then listen to "Child In Time" from IN ROCK. WAY too close for comfort. I'm not calling it thievery, because musicians listen to other musicians and absorb influences organically. I'd just like to see David LaFlamme in the songwriting credits for CHILD IN TIME. Both songs are great, both bands produced fine work, just give credit where credit is due.

Now, as to this 25th Anniversary edition of IN ROCK: lovely job of remastering, and a great selection of bonus tracks! This is definitely the one to own and treasure. One of Purple's best, and, really, one of my faves.

Amazon.com essential recording

Otis Redding's studio recordings remain some of soul's greatest moments, yet it was primarily his live performances that made Redding's reputation so stunning in the years prior to his death. In fact, at the time of his death, Redding had recently stolen the show at 1967's legendary Monterey Pop Festival. This live document was released only a month after that California performance in July of '67--and it's an even better set than the one that made him famous here in the States. In fact, it's a tossup between this and In Person at the Whisky a Go Go (released posthumously), in regards to capturing the soul great onstage in all his glory. But as much as the California hippies seemed to love Redding at the Whisky and at Monterey Pop, the Europeans simply adored him. That may be what gives this performance the slight edge as Redding runs through a standard set, spotlighting both some of his biggest hits as well as covers of tunes made famous by the Beatles, the Stones, the Temptations, the Isley Brothers, and Sam Cooke. Critic Sid Griffin suggested that this "is simply one of the few albums to give James Brown's breathtaking Live at the Apollo a run for its money"--and, really, you can't do any better than that. --Bill Holdship

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Otis Redding Live in Europe.......2007-01-09

You can actually feel his soul listening to this CD.
Much better than the Whisky a Go Go recordings that I also bought , and they are good too .

3 out of 5 stars Great performance, lousy mix.......2006-02-07

This is a good album. Otis gives a fine performance, and the crowd is way into it. Personally though, I feel the mixing of this recording borders on terrible. Otis' vocals take a back seat to the horn section, which is up far too loud. The drums are also a bummer, as they are practically inaudible. This is an album worth having, but not one worthy of being in the top 25 albums of all-time as Rolling Stone billed it.

5 out of 5 stars Another Grreat Live Performance by Otis Redding.......2001-03-16

I would actually give this four and a half stars. One reason is the sound quality. There is alot of audience noise and sometimes the vocals seem distant. Other then that, Otis Redding Live in Europe is a great album. It is not quite as good as In Person At The Whisky A Go Go, but it is still really good. The setlist is great. Respect kicks the album off great with one of the best versions of the song ever. This recording of Can't Turn You Loose is not as good as the one on Whisky, but it is good. This is followed by a very inspired version of I've been Loving You Too Long. The cover here of My Girl is probably even better then the version on Otis Blue, which is saying alot. Shake is done great and a very good version of satisfaction, but nowhere near as good as the one on Whisky. Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa is one of the highlights of the album, with alot of audience participation, which could be considered good or bad. I think that it still sounds really good. These Arms of Mine is another highlight. It's followed by a good version of Day Tripper that is drastically different then the Beatles version. The album closes with Try A Little Tenderness, which is the best song on the album. Overall this is a great album, but I would reccomend buying In Person At The Whisky A Go Go over this album.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best live Otis, but still wicked good.......2001-01-19

Otis is the man. His voice is powerful, his melodies stirring, and his energy onstage is unmatched. Unfortunately, it doesn't show as well on this album as on some of the others. On this cd, recorded (I think) in '67 in Europe, his backup band includes writing partner Steve Cropper as well as the rest of the members of Booker T & The MGs. Unfortunately, while the production and sound may be better on this album than on the other live Otis album, the songs come off somewhat sissified, less powerful, missing the vibrant energy heard (or felt!) on the other release, Otis Redding In Person at the Whiskey-A-Go-Go (released after his death). If you're looking for a reasonable introduction to Otis Redding, this is a good start - the songs are recognizable, the production is fairly clean, and it is enjoyable. Stand out tracks on this album include Daytripper (Beatles cover), Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa, Try a Little Tenderness, and Shake. Satisfaction is okay, but Respect and I Can't Turn You Loose sound tired and old. A good beginner record. If you're a hard-core R&B fan looking to groove, though, check out the Whiskey-A-Go-Go record. That will blow your socks off...

5 out of 5 stars You gotta hear it to believe it!.......2000-07-15

"Live in Europe" by Otis Redding is one of the 4 or 5 greatest live albums that I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. I bought the CD last year, and have enjoyed it immensely ever since. Interesting that Redding covers both the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. All of the songs here are superb. The audience participation here contributes greatly to the mood and atmosphere, and Redding knows exactly how to interact with the audience. This is exactly what a live album should be. This disc comes highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Album Description

Mark Isham's highly emotional score for the film CRASH will move you in ways you never expected. Beautiful cinematic passages collide with ethnic voices evoking the powerful imagery of the film. The album is complimented by the original song "In the Deep" by Bird York and "Maybe Tomorrow" by Stereophonics.

2 out of 5 stars The movie was a lot better!.......2007-07-27

I was disappointed. At the time of my purchase, my opinion was in the minority, but... This CD just doesn't do it.

4 out of 5 stars A good soundtrack..........2007-05-06

...to a great movie. It's not as good as his soundtrack to "Afterglow" but a nice listen nonetheless. Without the great band members like Gary Burton & Charles Lloyd what can one expect?

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite film scores from Mark Isham.......2007-02-25

Mark Isham is quickly becoming one of my favorite composers. His work on the indie film "The Cooler" introduced me to his talents and I enjoyed what I heard. It wasn't until "Crash" did I really start taking notice of his work. Mark's work on "Crash" is a mix of ambient and classical with a glimmer of Middle Eastern (like on the song "Flames"). A lot of film composers have a terrible habit of creating loud, bombastic music that simply overwhelms the film and the person watching the film. Mark avoids the bombastic trappings of Hans Zimmer and John Williams by creating a more lush, haunting, minimal score that will leave a profound, moving effect on the filmgoer. One of the best songs on the album is "Flames" a gorgeous Middle Eastern-influenced track with ethereal female vocals that reminded me of Azam Ali and Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance. My other favorite song on the cd is "In the Deep" by Bird York. The song is a lovely folk/pop/jazz song that captures the emotional turmoil that occurs through out the film. I wasn't too wild about The Stereophonics track. It kinda killed the intimate sound Mark Isham created. At least Bird York's song had that same lush, intimate, atmospheric sound. While "Crash" wasn't perfect by all means, the music itself is perfect in every sense of the word at least to me it is. Too bad I can't say the same for his recent work for "The Black Dahlia".

5 out of 5 stars broken box.......2007-02-21

Although the album is a perfect piece of art and the music has a total efect on the whole movie, tha box that came the cd was broken inside.. the teeth that holds the cd were not there and the cd was loose ready to fall when i opened the box..
Thats very unfortunate but still hasn't happened in the past, I'm amazon oriented customer, have ordered lots of stuff from amazon never had problems in the past! My best regards, Alex

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best ever.......2007-01-09

Every now and again a movie comes along that impacts you so personally and deeply, you cannot ignore, or ever forget what it meant to you. This is one of those movies.
Crash will take you down to your very soul then drag you back kicking and screaming to reality and wanting to run away and hide.
Dealing with society's inability to overcome prejudice on a very personal level, Crash exhibits the ability to make you examine not only yourself, but everyone around you. You ARE racist. Every thought you have tells you that, good or bad.
There is no one actor that stands out above the rest in this movie, all are treated by the director as being of the same importance, but the viewer WILL identify with at least one of them. All put in performances well above that expected. From Sandra Bullocks affluent life down to Matt Dillons survival in a dingy apartment, through Don Cheadles family dynamic to Jennifer Espisito's implicit Racism, you will see what ordinary America is really like. How we all interact with each other on a day-to-day basis, how the decisions we make effact not only ourselves, but others around us.
It would be impossible to give the plot in less than 5,000 words, but this film has gained 3 Oscars, 36 other awards and has 56 nominations, and it was worth more.
THE film of 2005, will be in the top 250 for all time movies.

Judging by the thick chugging that Deep Purple pull off as they enter "Highway Star" on this classic 1972 set, this band was of an era that appreciated size in sound. Ritchie Blackmore's guitar and Jon Lord's keyboards owned the evenings on the quintet's Japanese tour, giving the band a front-end density that kept drummer Ian Paice's snap heavy and loud. On tour in support of the album Machine Head, Deep Purple indulged in some great long-form jams, reaching into the 10-minute range for most of the main set and closing with the now-famed live read of "Space Truckin'." There's a reason this is regarded by many as one of hard rock's cornerstone live recordings. It's a boiler. This gold version of the title offers superior sound quality for a higher price than the standard-issue CD. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars MARK 2 LINE UP - MADE IN JAPAN.......2007-05-31

This is the famous line-up of Mark 2; Ian Gillan on vocals, Ritchie Blackmore on guitars, Roger Glover on bass, Jon Lord on keyboards and Ian Paice on the drums.

This is absolutely one of the best recorded live albums for me. Recorded live in Japan in 1972! Just buy the album and listen! If you own it in vinyl (LP) like me, it's better that you own it also in the form of a CD coz it's expanded with extra tracks like Black Night, Speed King and Lucille. These songs didn't appear in the first release of the album and even in the first release of the CD.

This is my third copy of this album already. I've got my first copy in the mid 70s and again in the 80s. Actually in the Philippines it was released as Made in Japan Volume 1 and Volume 2 in separate album.

All songs in the LP Volume 1 and 2 are in one CD only in this edition and the other CD contains the extra tracks from the same Japanese tour in 1972.

5 out of 5 stars WOW - I forgot just how good it can get!.......2007-02-02

Perhaps I should thank those kids who stole all my CD's from my car. Cause now as I am replacing them, I'm also listening to some of the old classics. And Made in Japan is a classic!

Favorite song on the cd is Child In Time. But the entire CD is great!

If you like hard rock from the old days, this is a must have!

5 out of 5 stars Driving a semi into space and never comin back!.......2006-12-19

This is fun and heavy music. Ian Gillian screams his head off, Ritchie Blackmore goes nuts with vibrato and tremolo on his Stratocaster, Jon Lord goes into intergalactic space and back with incredible Hammond electronic organ effects, and Roger Glover and Ian Paice somehow hold it all together in Japan. This is Deep Purple.

The music could easily fly over the edge with a lesser group, with such silly material as "Strange Kind of Woman" (a trite "girl I gotta have ya" rock song) or "The Mule" (with some totally bizarre lyrics flying into a drum solo), but Deep Purple somehow transform the fluff into amazing and deep music. I'd dare any other band out there to try this.

The high points are "Highway Star", which kicks things off with a bang, and "Lazy" and "Space Truckin'", which feature Jon Lord's bizarre virtuosity and cutting-edge analog modulation of the classic Hammond organ. The sound, although strange and definitely "70's", somehow holds up remarkably well 35 years later.

Everyone is in excellent form on the album. They hold their own and play well together.

Very good liner notes provide a glimpse into the concert, the band, and even how this was marketed at the time as the greatest concert ever recorded. That bold claim is not too far from the truth, even today. Speaking of recording, the sound is excellent, as it always has been, with excellent balance and clarity.

The three encores are an interesting, but not essential, addition. They're enjoyable, but unfortunately, they turn what could have been 1 CD into 2 CDs, making this more a little more expensive.

Overall, this is music that goes way over the top and rarely seems to come back, and it might not be for everyone. But if you enjoy hard rock and virtuosity, this is an essential purchase.

5 out of 5 stars The promise of 70's hard rock is delivered.......2006-11-09

This could be one of the only hard rock cd's you ever need.

Fantastic from start to finish, this set shows everything that was right (and excessive) with the music scene in the early 70's.

Beyond any rating system

5 out of 5 stars The best live album ever.......2006-10-16

This album alone, should put Deep Purple in the rock and roll hall of fame.

Made In Japan puts most live albums to shame, even the really good one's! A legendary band at their peak captured on tape forever. There is a god! This Remastered Edition is only better in that it has the great encore Black Night included on a three songs bonus disc.

Get it, turn it up and enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars Does anyone besides me hate this band?.......2007-06-29

Okay, I don't think My Chemical Romance could churn out a song as banal or inane as "Speed King" if they tried, and that's the second-best song on the album. Anybody else seeing a problem? This erases all the effort by superior acts like the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix to establish rock as a legitimate art form. Take "Bloodsucker". It's even duller than "Speed King", believe it or not. Three of these songs run at epic lengths, including one ("Child in Time") being stretched longer than ten - "Child" has got to be the most painful song Purple ever recorded, a blundered attempt to combine opera (listen to Gillan's shrieking vocal histrionics and Jon Lord's painful haunted-house organ) and hard rock (listen to Blackmore's unspectacular, clumsy, loud pentatonic twiddling). Sounds interesting in theory, but it's a good thing virtually nobody else tried this. I can't call it the worst song on the album because it gave me a good chuckle (which I'm sure wasn't intended), but it sure comes pretty close. The other two ("Flight of the Rat", "Hard Lovin' Man") are basically just your average Deep Purple songs (or, should I say, sub-average Deep Purple songs) dragged out as long as possible. Ouch. "Into the Fire" is everything I hate about Deep Purple: soulless and derivative, with Gillan wailing away as usual. I'm sorry, but I don't like his voice. At all. Now I do like "Livin' Wreck" - cool riff, interesting drumming - but it's almost ruined by Ian's shrieked backup vocals. This is insipid, soulless, and overrated. So's Deep Purple. Go figure.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing compares to this- a 'Landmark' album!.......2007-04-23

This album slays anything the band did before or after. They have been around for decades, but this is their only nasterpiece, in my opinion. Maybe 'Machine head' came a close second. 'Deep Purple in rock' is a landmark album. Worth the price of admission for 'Speed King' and 'Child in time' alone--stunning!!! Buy it for these 2 tracks.

5 out of 5 stars At their best.......2006-06-16

This album, when it was released, never got the attention it deserved. It was all about Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath back in the day. But for my money, these guys played heavy blues rock like nobody's business. I can only think the reason "Machine Head" gets all the play and subsequent sales numbers is due to "Smoke On The Water". "In Rock" has the tone, muscianship, writing and those great lead vocals that stand up against damn near anything released in the 69-70 period. So, no big top-40 hit? Who cares. True hard/blues rock freaks listened to a side at a time, not a song at a time. Put this one on....you'll see.

5 out of 5 stars Far heavier than anything Purple had done before.......2006-05-24

In 1968 and 1969, Deep Purple Mark I (Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Paice, Jon Lord, Nicky Semper, Rod Evans) released three albums, on the Tetragrammaton label (a label ran by famous comic Bill Cosby), that is Shades of Deep Purple, The Book of Taliesyn, and their self-entitled album. These albums also had British releases, the first being on Parlophone, the other two on Harvest (although released a few months later after the US releases, for some odd reason). The first two albums consisted of a bunch of covers of other people's songs, including "Hush" and Neil Diamond's "Kentucky Woman". The third album only had one cover, that is Donovan's "Lalena". These albums found the band performing psychedelia, prog rock, pop, and early hard rock, sometimes not always the most convincing, but they still made a lot of excellent material. It was with their third album that they hinted at a new, heavier direction they would be exploring in the new decade like "Bird Has Flown" and "Why Hasn't Rosemary?", but they still tended to be tame in comparison to the Mark II-lineup albums because Ritchie Blackmore was still playing psychedelic and prog rock styles on his guitar. After their third album came out, Nicky Semper and Rod Evans were out of the picture, in comes vocalist Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover. Because Tetragrammaton was going under by this point, the group sought a deal in the US with Warner Brothers (but stayed on Harvest in the UK). They first did an experiment with rock band and orchestra called Concerto For Group and Orchestra, which bewildered a few fans and was criticized for not having very much rock band and orchestra interaction (apparently even less band/orchestra interaction than the Moody Blues' Days of Future Passed, but I hadn't heard Concerto For Group and Orchestra, so I'm just taking their word for those who heard that album).

But then they returned to rock with In Rock, with a change in direction. Even before 1970, Led Zeppelin was riding high, as everyone knows, they already managed to release two albums in 1969. In 1970 comes Black Sabbath's debut album (and later that year, Paranoid). If anyone hadn't noticed by this point (1969/'70), music was getting heavier than ever before and it was these groups that were responsible for the evolution of heavy metal. Deep Purple were obviously wanting to get in the game, and new member Ian Gillan and Roger Glover were obviously made for this new, emerging heavy metal scene. Heavy guitar riffs from Blackmore and heavily fuzzed organ from Lord were now order of the day. Gone are the harpsichords, psychedelic gimmicks, and covers of other people's songs, with a much more raw, unbridled hard rock sound. A pop-oriented song like "Anthem" (which appeared on The Book of Taliesyn) would be something the Mark II lineup would never dream of doing. The band drives home this point right away with "Speed King", with Ian Gillan's wild voice and heavy guitar riffs. In the middle, the band gets jazzy, with some great organ and guitar solos. "Bloodsucker" continues on this same hard rock vein, as is most of the rest of the album. "Child in Time" starts off as a ballad, but then in the middle the band really gets rocking. This song caused some controversy with a San Francisco psychedelic band called It's a Beautiful Day (the band responsible for "White Bird") as Purple partially borrowed for IABD's "Bombay Calling" (but "Child in Time" has vocals while "Bombay Calling" doesn't). That caused It's a Beautiful Day to get back at Deep Purple by recording "Don and Dewey" off their next album, Marrying Maiden (1970) which beared more than a passing resemblance to Purple's "Wring That Neck" from The Book of Taliesyn album (in fact "Don and Dewey" sounds even more similar to "Wring that Neck" than "Child in Time" did "Bombay Calling", the only difference was that "Don and Dewey" featured violin, as it was a trademark of the It's a Beautiful Day sound). For all you hard rock/metal fans, if you had any doubts about Deep Purple with the Mark I lineup, all doubts were obviously thrown out the window with the Mark II lineup and In Rock. This album did not spawn any hits, unlike this lineup's best known song, "Smoke on the Water" off Machine Head. But then it don't matter as long as the music is great. All Deep Purple fans are going to need this album.

5 out of 5 stars BEST FROM DEEP PURPLE.......2006-01-16

This whole album jams fom top to bottom:)
Speed King- need you say more
Bloodsucker- my favorite, Richie and John dueling this one out
Child Of Time- future often mentioned
Flight of the Rat- another favorite jam from them
Into the Fire-out of the case into the cd player
Living Wreck- perrrrfect construction of a song
Hard Lovin' Man- most men consider to be, but still good little number
this whole album is like rock n' roll on speed, from Ian Gillans screams, to Ian Paice bashing the drums to smitherines, and John Lord playing his organ like it was a Gibson Les Paul being played by Jimmy Page, and of course Richie Blackmore's aggressive attempt to pervert rock to its roots. This album is pure, and too bad it never gets airplay, this is a gem worth getting indeed.

William "Bootsy" Collins was already a veteran of James Brown's band when he hooked up with George Clinton's Parliafunkadelicment thang in the early '70s. His outsize personality and preternatural good nature made him an obvious choice when Clinton came up with the idea of reaching for the preteen audience ("geepies") with a comic-book-style character; thus was born Bootsy's Rubber Band. Thumping tracks and Collins's stoned-sounding mumblings made the whole thing irresistible. Back in the Day collects many of the high points among the man's statements of purpose ("The Pinocchio Theory") and seduction moves ("Hollywood Squares"). --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars FUNKALICIOUS!!!!.......2005-12-04

I usually don't recommend compliations, but no record collection should be complete without this.
Why?
The last track just may be the most exciting live performance recorded.

4 out of 5 stars Something interesting to note..........2005-08-20

I think it's interesting that he does duets with Snoop(Dogg): "No Thang On Me", "Can I Get A Flicc Witchu" AND also with TobyMac(from DC Talk): "Diverse City."

It's interesting because while Snoop is rap and TobyMac is Rock/Rap, they are on the opposite sides of the hip/hop spectrum, lyrically, that is.

5 out of 5 stars Ahhhhh, the name is Bootsy, Baby! .......2005-01-08

When first heard this, I took it back to the shop and asked for my money back, I'm serious! I was into Sly Stone, James Brown, and Funkadelic. My tastes at that time were pretty limited. After a year or so, I was sittin' round at a friends, amidst a plume of yellow smoke, talkin' gibberish, and somebody put this same cd on. Man... We cried laughing! Only then did I start to realize just HOW FAR OUT THERE this cat really is! Casper and all the Hollywood swinging, Pscycoticbumschoolin' grooves jus took me 'out the front door, and in tha back'!
Man!

The space bass is heard to full effect on here. I like the slow jams, like 'Mugpush,' 'Can't stay away,' and 'Vanish in Our Sleep.' His tunes have a hypnotic, nursury rhyme thing goin' on that nobody else could ever conceive, or get away with!

If you wanna get silly serious, get Bootsy!

Donna de Lory has several solo albums out, but she's still best known as a back-up singer for Madonna, fleshing out choruses since the mid 1980s. There's more than a little bit of Madonna in De Lory's voice, at once fragile and vulnerable, yet still powerful, with a gospel-like yearning. On her own, De Lory has crafted artful pop on albums like Bliss and In the Glow, but she also tends toward the mystical and began incorporating Sanskrit mantras or Kirtans into her songs, a tact culminated on The Lover & the Beloved, a full-fledged Mantra journey. De Lory draws from the golden oldies of mantras, including "Hare Krishna," but revs them up with electronica beats, verse-chorus arrangements, multi-tracked vocals, and electronic textures sprinkled in with the sitars and tablas. Cameron Stone weaves his processed cello through De Lory's melodies and harmonium in serpentine rivulets, tying together the tablas of Girish Gambhira and the answering chants of Kirtan singer, Dave Stringer. Endowed with the materiel girl's sense of pop form and irresistible hooks, De Lory posits a confluence between pop and spiritual music, in which a repeated chorus has the same mantric effect as a chant. Her chants could be hymns to Krishna or a plea to a lover, but they are equally ecstatic and powerful. --John Diliberto

Album Description

These Sanskrit mantras bubble with a groove and atmosphere that takes tradition to heaven and back. Donna's voice resonates with ether and earth, beauty that asks you to join in, become one with the sound of deep celebration.

This is a wonderful CD of chants that are both up to date and ancient at the same time. It is calming to the soul to listen to, and later in the day you will find youself chanting the words.....

5 out of 5 stars Soothing. Peaceful. .......2006-09-12

I love all these songs! Soothing and tranquil.

They last a long time which is perfect for use as background music while working or while chatting with friends.

It makes it easier to relax to the melody, let your cares float away as the music wraps around you.
It's one of my favorites, I'm so glad I took a chance and got this one:)

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Soulful Yoga Music.......2006-03-18

Donna De Lory has a beautiful, soulful voice and her music is perfect to practice yoga to or to unwind and get into that zenlike spirit. I ordered the rest of her CDS.

5 out of 5 stars brilliant masterpiece.......2005-09-12

This album is a brilliant masterpiece. Extremely uncommon music, farly outrunning the present. A listener is experiencing a deep feeling of being, also as each piece here, so long, is being changed several times in movement and style. At this web page the short mp3 shows are only presented in one such a style and movement, more torrential but less oriental. The most varied piece is the last seventh: Govinda Jaya Jaya (Mac Quayle Mix). And what's more, the box for the CD is not the traditional plastic, but it is made quite else and I do not mean to disclose, how. For me it was an eye-opener and I wish you the same excitment. It is no lesser masterpiece than the music itself. So I recommend this album to everybody and thank the authors very much for this great experience. You're real masters.

5 out of 5 stars Just love it!.......2005-04-11

A lovely album. Donna brings a sense of creativity, melody and bkathi (devotion) to each of the songs. It starts with a catchy Ganapathi OM, continuing with the same catchiness with Om Namah Shivaya. He Ma Durga brings out the delicacy of her voice. I loved Govinda Jaya Jaya, which is ideal for a group chant that brings a lot of energy into the singing.

I found all the songs to be melodious. The lyrics are simple for anyone to remember easily. The tune is catchy and lingers on after listening. There is a nice blend of western and Indian instruments providing soothing background music. As in many Indian songs/chants, you will find repetition within each song, which is a nice thing. You probably will not notice it as it encourages you to remember the tune/song much easily.

I use this album in my Yoga classes regularly and come away humming for a long time. Just love it!
