not to great.......2007-04-04
We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.
Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22
I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.
You get what you pay for........2004-07-04
You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.
Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04
I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

String Quartet Writing is Alive and Well.......2003-01-12
String quartet writing is alive and well in America. Before I bought this CD I had never heard of Kenneth Fuchs. But members of the American String Quartet are old friends and I typically buy their new releases. I'm glad I did.
Fuchs, Director of the School of Music at the University of Oklahoma, and formerly Dean of Students and Academics at the Manhattan School of Music, is a real composer. On the basis of these three quartets, one can say that he has a genuine lyrical gift, as well as a masterful sense of form, expert counterpoint, rhythmic verve, and drama.
The Second Quartet has five movements inspired by five different pieces of Robert Motherwell, whose collages the composer had first seen in New York in 1984. Full-color photographs of the five collages are included in the liner notes and it was helpful to look at them while listening to the music. Fuchs's style is generally tonal, but with enough spicy dissonance to make the harmonies interesting, and there are even some serial sections which, however, are still tonal-sounding. If I had to compare his sound to any other composer's, I'd probably have to mention that of Shostakovich; what composer writing quartets in the second half of the 20th century could avoid his influence? Shostakovich's hollow-eyed terror, however, is missing. And occasionally, as in the second movement, there is a melismatic ecstasy reminiscent of Vaughan Williams's 'The Lark Ascending.' The third movement combines elements of the first two, while responding to 'The Marriage', one of Motherwell's pieces, and, in the composer's wry comment, 'it ends badly.' The fourth movement functions as the work's development and leads to the fifth movement, which one could consider the quartet's recapitulation; the musical landscapes of the earlier movements are recalled in an affirmative mood.
The Third Quartet, in three movements and subtitled 'Whispers of Heavenly Death', was composed 'as a gift for the American String Quartet,' after they had toured with the Second Quartet. Each of the movements has an epigram from Whitman's 'Darest Thou Now O Soul.' The materials in the three movements are related, and like the working-out of the materials in Bartók's 'Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta', the harmonic language becomes more diatonic as the work progresses, with an accompanying easing of tension. Like the Second Quartet, this one ends on an affirmative note.
The Fourth Quartet, subtitled 'Bergonzi', was written for the Bergonzi Quartet, in 1998. Its one ten-minute movement has three distinct sections -- Energico - Meno mosso - Vivo -- played without interruption. The first section introduces a tremolo figure on the viola followed by a lyrical, almost swooning, figure on the cello and these become the major figures in the succeeding lyrical second and energetic third sections.
This CD probably represents the last ASQ recording that includes their founding cellist, David Geber, who became head of the Manhattan School's string department in 2001. I haven't heard his successor, Margo Tatgenhorst, yet, but look forward to hearing the ASQ next week. And, frankly, I'm hoping they will play one of Fuchs's quartets. As for this particular recording, I can only quote the reviewer in American Record Guide: "Quartet recordings don't get any better than this."

This 78-minute collection from four appearances at the famed Swiss blues festival displays the varied strengths of Luther Allison's music. The tensile, screaming guitar work and squawling vocal attack Allison is known for are here, of course, but there's another layer at work. A 1984 set with the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, for instance, offers the Muddy Waters-like "Back Down South" (on which Allison lays down his ax in favor of a harp), as well as the Otis Redding-style shouts of "Memories." The most intense moments come on "Bad News Is Coming" and "Bad Love" (with the Memphis Horns backing him up), when Allison pushes through to the pulse of his muse with a six-string expression of confusion and grit. They make his death in the late '90s poignant and that much more palpable. --Rickey Wright

RICK "SHAQ" GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "CHICAGO NATIVE FLEES TO SWITZERLAND WITH THE BLUES!".......2007-01-23
Due to the fact that Chicago blues great, Luther Allison, had to flee Chicago to earn a living playing da blues, (See earlier Shaq Review!) the famed Montreux Jazz festival became his stage. Included on this CD are nothing but "live" performances from this venue covering the years 1976-1994. Every cut is great, so you can't miss with this selection, but let me point out a few extra ordinary highlights! I have heard many performances of "Little Red Rooster", and this performance by Luther is the absolute best. It is 11 minutes and 30 seconds long, and every second, is a gift. No one has ever performed "The Sky Is Crying" live, better than Stevie Ray Vaughn, and in Shaq's opinion, Albert King is second. But, this performance by Luther, highlighted with a slide guitar, is a different approach, and interestingly, enjoyable. And how "bitter sweet", must it have been, for Luther, under self-exile, in Europe, to earn a decent living, singing, "Sweet Home Chicago!" This CD is a must, for any true electric blues enthusiast!
Red Hot Live Chicago Blues from Switzerland.......2006-08-06
Fans of the blues have always been blessed to have the Montreux Jazz Festival since it has produced a huge number of classic performances with just about every great blues artist. When comparing Luther to his fellow Chicago bluesmen, his sound is more similar to Buddy Guy than Muddy Waters due to his raw, energetic, & frenzied guitar solos. Just about everybody has recorded Willie Dixon's 'Gambler's Blues,' but Luther's version recorded at Montreux back in '76 absolutely smokes. His extended version of 'Little Red Rooster' heats things up with the same intensity. 'Bad News is Coming' recorded in '84 & 'Bad Love' recorded in '94 are two other fiery tracks. I also highly recommend Luther's 'Live in Chicago' CD (recorded in '97). Between the two live CD's, they encompass the majority of Luther's best work.
Luther at his best live.......2006-03-20
Luther Allison was one of those artists that seemed to play better live than in the studio. This CD is compiled with performances over almost 20 years. Even though some of the material is very familiar, Luther has a fresh take on the songs and he delivers all of them with a lot of energy. There's really not a weak cut on the disc and for those of us who never saw Luther in concert, this is a great memento. Many of the cuts feature some fine jams and the disc is a very generous length also.
A searing live performance from one of the best ever.......2001-02-10
The day I saw Luther Allison play live changed me forever. For months after that I practiced the guitar for hours every day, hoping one day to approach his skill level. This is the kind of performer Luther Allison is. This album comes in a close second to his stunning "Live in Chicago". Fans of blues standards may even prefer this one, because it contains his takes on "Sweet Home Chicago", "Little Red Rooster", and "The Sky is Crying", just to name a few. I'll miss Luther to the day I die. He was one of the greatest bluesmen ever. Check out his son, Bernard Allison. His style is different, more Stevie Ray/Jimi influenced, but every bit as exciting and dynamic as his father's.
great live music.......2000-08-19
tome this is the greatest live blues recording the late great luther allison, this cd contains versions of sweet home chicago, same thing, gamblers blues to name a few, luthers guitar playing is at the top of his game,if you love luther this a the live video from paradise is great.

Philip Glass CD.......2007-04-05
The service I received on this order was excellent. I was stunned at how quickly the package arrived.
The CD itself I don't much care for. That having been said, please understand I am not a big fan of New Age music. I bought the CD because a drum and bugle corps called Phantom Regiment is performing material from it in their field show this summer. I am very curious to see what the staff gleaned from this.
Great fun!.......2007-03-19
This is incidental music to a play, so it's all wordless [the voice of Linda Ronstadt being used as an instrument] and contained. It's Glass' take on a classic sci-fi score...his version of the original Star Trek theme. [that's why the electric keyboard sound...which is not "cheesy" but essential to the scale and mood of the piece] Sometimes dreamy, sometime frantic, it is full of invention and mood.
Great for driving!!
Know before you buy!.......2005-08-04
This is not typical Glass music, I do not believe. The emphasis of the opera as well as the music is to create an impression of the incredible and amazing, not so much to create a landscape and gaze at it, as Philip Glass music often does.
For someone who is new to Philip Glass' older works, this may be a gentle introduction. For more seasoned fans who do not know about the opera, you may want to do your homework first.
Did not like it.......2005-03-12
As a huge fan of early Philip Glass, I was anticipating wonderful things when I bought this album.
It disappointed me greatly, though. The organic tone of the Farfisa organs was gone, replaced by a very cheesy plastic dull sounding FM synthesis keyboard sound.
And the compositions seemed to be rehashes of the earlier Glass idioms.
I ended up getting rid of this album, after trying a few more times to get into it.
And that's pretty sad (compare to my favorite Glass albums -- including "Music in 12 Parts", "Einstein on the Beach", "North Star", "Akhnaten", "Satyagraha", "Dance Pieces", "The Photographer")
1000 Airplanes: A Spacy Opera.......2003-11-23
I wasn't sure what to think of this album after listening to it a couple of times. I found myself enamored with Track 10, however, a very fast, powerful, maddening tune, and felt the need to go back and re-evaluate the entire album. I found that the album is quick, very thematic, thought-provoking. In fact, I didn't know anything about the theme of the album, but as I listened, I felt I was on the brink of insanity. As it happens, a friend of mine mentioned that the opera is just that--about someone who is a bit whacked. This album is a top five of mine. It's a bit spacy, edgy, crazy. Linda Ronstadt's out-of-this-world vocals are awesome. If you like Philip Glass, you'll love this album!

Amazing........2002-03-20
These guys are astounding. I've just borne witness to their live show, and I'm positive you've never seen anything like it. It was the best live performance I've been to in recent memory. Outstanding. The vocal talent was unbelieveable. From beatboxing to Scottish Ice Ice Baby, they can do anything. Bow down before them, for you are in the presence of greatness. Buy this album. Now!
One of the best A Cappella CDs.......2001-07-09
I have over 1,300 A Cappella CDs for my radio show and this is definately in my top 10 list. Their version of "Ants Marching" is better than Dave Matthews. Any music fan should own this cd. Country fans should but this just to hear the song "IF"
My favorite.......2001-05-31
Amidst the music of many teen-agers such as Dave Matthews Band, Radiohead, Pink Floyd, etc., this is my favorite group. They have incredible talent and display it through a diverse offering of songs. One almost needs to see them live before you can truly believe that this is pure a cappella, no instruments whatsoever, not even the "electric guitar" solo in "Fields of Joy." Not only is the music pleasing to the ear, but it fulfills its identification as an art form by touching and evoking emotions.
Not an Acapella fan, but was FLOORED by this CD.......2001-02-18
This group played at my sons school here in Germany (U.S. Military) He convinced my wife to go to the repeat concert at the H.S. They enjoyed it so much they bought the CD. I was forced to listen to it and I loved it. It is INCREDIBLE!!!! They make music that has to be heard to be belived. DON'T MISS THIS CD.
Four Shadow at it's finest!.......2000-10-26
Simply amazing. The covers are great, but buy this cd for the originals. "If" alone is worth the price. The tight harmony and crisp vocal percussion make this a must have for any contemporary a cappella fan. Buy it!

Voice of an angel.......2005-11-07
Angel Rissoff's first album is a wonderful showcase for his extrordinary voice as well as writing talent. He tells a story of love gone wrong and the power of love, all in a venue that plays on in your head long after the CD has ended. If you love good R&B you will love "Where Have You Been".

- This is a Kickass upstart album

Album Description
Where are you going? Where have you been?, is the first full-length album released by the screwtape letters. This album is emotionally driven and is a melodic piece. Witham's lyrics detail an abstract view of a walk through life. It has been compared in resemblance to early U2, Travis, and radiohead.
Customer Reviews:
This is a Kickass upstart album.......2001-12-21
There is not a bad song on the entire album these guys did a great job putting this thing together. With thought provoking lyrics and a new sound these guys are sure to be busting onto the big scene. This album will appeal to many different tastes and has a distinctive rock feel. I really suggest this album to any music lover that is not afraid to try something new.
