Amazon.com's Best of 1999
Save for its delicate tone, Looper's Up a Tree doesn't sound much like what you'd expect from a side project of a Belle and Sebastian member (bassist Stuart David). But its meld of stories, melodies, and electronic-pop sounds captures a hazy sweetness. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Porcupine Tree - Up the Downstairs.......2007-05-17

Up the DownstairThis is the remastered edition to replace the orginal cd in my collection. Great sound quality and bonus cd. I love the new trend of remasters with bonus cd's. It makes the decision to update something you already have easier.

5 out of 5 stars Another winner!.......2006-09-13

I waited a while to review this and I'm glad. Not near as accessible as "In Absentia" or "Deadwing" but still awesome. Steve Wilson's songs have a way of growing on me like no one else's. Some were instantaneous mainstays, including "Always Never" and "Fadeaway," two of the most emotional performances ever! But the other tracks are all great. Some quite long instrumentals that don't get boring (are actually quite good!) And I really enjoy the bonus CD "Staircase Infinities." Some more great instrumentals. This is music from Porcupine Tree that most resembled Pink Floyd (along with The Sky Moves Sideways.) But I personally think these instrumentals are better put together than some of Pink Floyd's, partially due to updated sound effects, but I think overall due to Steve Wilson's seemingly unending imagination and creativity. I am glad to read that the drum tracks were re- recorded using Gavin Harrison (their present-day drummer,) instead of samples. Poor Gavin: you can hear the restraint in his playing since Steven told him to try to stay close to the original recording! But one of the main reasons I am writing this review is to give credit to Mr. Harrison's phenomenal performances. Even playing under restraint, he manages to out- shine many of his peers. But listen to him on In Absentia or Deadwing. This guy lets the sticks fly perhaps more than any other artist I've heard (with the exception of his predecessor, Chris Maitland!) Now I'm not much of one to get excited by someone banging on a drum, but Porcupine Tree has had two of the best percussionists I've ever heard! Well, there is Bill Bruford... But, anyhow... you can be sure that you will enjoy this recording very much, just give it time to sink in!

4 out of 5 stars The first great Porcupine Tree album.......2006-07-13

THE BAND: Steve Wilson (vocals, guitars, drum samples, bass), with assistance from Richard Barbieri (keyboards), Colin Edwin (bass), Gavin Harrison (drums & percussion on 2005 remastered version only).

THE DISC: (1993) Originally released in '93, this elegant digitally remastered foldout digi-pak was re-released in 2005 by Snapper Music. Disc 1 contains 10 tracks clocking in at just under 49 minutes. The 2nd (bonus) disc labeled "Staircase Infinities" contains 5 tracks at just over 30 minutes (this disc was originally released as an EP on Lazy Eye label in '94). Included with the discs is a 10-page booklet containing a 2-page intro by PT mastermind Steve Wilson, song titles/times, song lyrics, several trippy psychedelic pictures, and thank you's.

COMMENTS: For me, this was Porcupine Tree's first great album. While it's predecessor "On The Sunday Of Life" (1991) had some brief shining moments, it was simply too much off-beat jamming, odd songs and experimentation... quite simply "weird". "Up The Downstair" was almost solely created and produced by Steve Wilson. For this remastered edition, Wilson went back to the original recordings years later... he decided to remove some of the drum programs/samples and have current drummer (1999 - present) Gavin Harrison play them live. Still not happy, Wilson redid some of the guitar work... and he himself says it's a better album for it. Much warmer in depth, richer in texture, better playing in general and more listenable... not to mention substantial improvements with the recording equipment. Comparisons to Pink Floyd are frequent (and I'm okay with that because I loved Pink Floyd back in the 70's), but only slightly in my opinion. The Tree gives you many a long space jam, but I think their craft is much more modern. "Synesthesia" starts the album off as a mid tempo rock/pop song. "Always Never" features some beautiful acoustic moments laced with some brilliant electric guitars and shredding solos. "Fadeaway" is a beautiful mellow rocker - a fantastic album closer - as noted in the booklet the song is one of Wilson's favorites. Steve Wilson is a genius at his craft. As good as "Up The Downstair" may be, I'd recommend starting with PT's more accessible albums... "In Absentia" (2002), or "Deadwing" (2005). Then, expand to one of their live albums "Coma Divine" (1997) or "Warszawa" (2001)... and then collect everything else they've done including this one. With all their releases (except Deadwing), look for the remastered digi-pak versions. Great disc (4.5 stars).

5 out of 5 stars I've burned this one out.......2006-06-26

Great performance of musical talent. These guys make music, they don't just play it. If you're tired of everything else, listen to these guys.

5 out of 5 stars Steven Wilson creates "albums".......2006-06-13

Like any other PT album, this is exactly that... an album. Its not a collection of songs with filler but, rather, a well thought out album which lives and flows from song to song.

Any project from Steven Wilson incorporates the use of layering. Theres a lot of stuff going on in any one of these songs. And to hear it all on one listen would be near impossible.

Steven Wilson has mentioned himself that he doesn't typically make the most complex music, instead he makes simple songs with complex production.

Listen to Burning Sky for a good example of this.

Think of this as sort of pink floyd and spacey pop opera. There are quite a bit of instrumentals, so if you're coming from a pop background then i would recommend trying their newer stuff first: "Deadwing", "In Absentia", "Lightbulb Sun", or the newly reissued "Stupid Dream"

Great stuff. Great journey.

3 out of 5 stars Not that amazing........2007-01-19

I bought this somewhat based on the glowing reviews others had given it. It's not bad, but not that fantastic either. I've heard much better versions of most of the music on it. Not quite worth the price.

2 out of 5 stars Are you kidding?.......2007-01-05

While the musical arrangements are tolerably adequate and the orchestra is fair, this is some of the worst choral singing I've ever heard. They obviously have no concept of tuning and couldn't stay on pitch if their lives depended on it. I can't believe this is supposed to be a professional recording and the director didn't correct these glaring errors. I picked up this CD at an after-Christmas sale at 75% off, and I will forever mourn the loss of my $5.00. I guess it might suffice as a mediocre white elephant gift, but I pity whomever may be forced to listen to it. I suggest you not waste your money. If it's classical Christmas carols you want, search for more well-known and trustworthy music groups like the London Philharmonic and the Cambridge Singers.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice!.......2007-01-02

I have to agree with the other reviewers that this is a very enjoyable CD of traditional carols. It contains a huge selection of songs. I was afraid that they might all sound the same, but to me, the orchestration and vocals are varied and well done. I bought this for Christmas, and it's one of my favorite new Christmas CDs in recent memory.

5 out of 5 stars The Holidays Never Sounded So Good!.......2005-12-17

I loved the "50 Most Loved Piano Classics," so I decided to try another "50 Most Loved" collection, this time the Christmas Carols album. These are classics in their own right as the arrangements and orchestrations are enchantingly beautiful and the choir vocals provide perfect point-counterpoint. I hate to admit this, but I'll probably still be listening to this CD long after Christmas is over. There's a cinematic soundtrack quality that I find haunting. Have a great holiday with this one!

5 out of 5 stars Very pleased.......2005-11-23

This is an excellent value. 3 CD's and 50 songs for under $20.00. If you're looking for traditional Christmas music, this is the collection to buy.

5 out of 5 stars rarely heard music.......2007-01-07

Good on you Bostridge! These BRitten songs are fabulous - didn't even know that some of them even existed! JOhnson's playing makes for a perfect duo with Bostridge's intelligent interpretations of these brilliant songs.

5 out of 5 stars A voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-02-07

Oh Hearken all ye true lovers of GOOD MUSIC for this album presents some of the most profoundly beautiful songs you will ever hear anywhere!!!It would be worthwhile even if you only enjoyed the first 3 songs on the disc: the 3 Realizations from Harmonia Sacra which are 'Lord! I have sinned','Hymn to God the Father' by Pelham Humfreys and 'A Hymn on Divine Music' (which is absolutely so meaningful to us who love the art of music) by William Croft all arranged by Britten for tenor and harp. And all sung by one of the most exquisitely beautiful tenor voices ever to come out of the UK; flawless diction, resonant and vibrant tone quality and highly emotional portraying every little nuance in the song.
I bought this album because the music of Britten has always intrigued me and I was not disappointed in the variety of songs included on this album. The nine Holy Sonnets of John Donne are profound religious meditations, all of which are concerned with death and repentance. The songs 'Evening','Morning', and 'Night', are taken from the incidental music for Ronald Duncan's Masque 'This Way to the Tomb'.There are songs with settings of W.H. Auden, and several other writers too numerous to mention, but suffice it to say that there is sufficient variety to keep all listeners interested throughout the disc. Some of the songs I found particularly interesting are:'The Red Cockatoo',Waley-'A Poison Tree',Blake-'Cradle Song for Eleanor',MacNeice-and 'Death be not Proud'. When you have an Ian Bostridge available there is no need to look for anyone else. He has all the vocal skills and nuances to sing each song as an island in itself; simply marvelous interpretations, and he is fortunate to have Graham Johnson to accompany him.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but could be much better..........2004-11-02

While I do like some of what Bostridge does, his recorded performances to me seem to be filled more and more with musical gimmicks. His tone I find refreshing from so many English tenors who sound like they are in pain while singing, but Brostridge truly does lack a good legato line and he often uses a horrible strident quality for emphisis of text.

Peter Pears' recordings of many of these songs are still in many ways the difinitive performances, but I do like to hear other voices sing this repertoire and unfortunately very few options are out there. So, kudos to Bostridge for recording these songs, but lets not crown him THE new Britten singer of our time.

5 out of 5 stars THE English Singer sings music by THE English Songwriter.......2000-02-29

This CD lets us know that not only was Britten the greatest of English composers since Purcell, but he is an absolute master at songwriting. His economic style is perfect for songs, his choice of text is truly sophisticated and his idiomatic writing for both piano and voice put the listener always on the edge of his or her seat. Bostridge's light but powerful voice suits these songs perfectly. And Graham Johnson's piano playing is unsurpassable. One of my favorite CDs!

Album Description

Fucked Up's first full-length studio album marks a turning point for the mysterious Toronto band, transcending the boundaries of punk with melody, aggression, expansive structures, and enigmatic diatribes on what lies under the immediate, visualized world. They combine confrontational ideologies with deliberate misinformation to produce a brutal analysis on thought provocative punk. "Ironically, their fast and sloppy early 80's hardcore is a million times more musical and ferocious than 99% of professional myspace-era mosh bands, and their fans' post-show cuts and bruises remind us that this shit might have the potential to still be dangerous" - Vice. For fans of The Wipers, Ramones, The Who, Negative Approach, Pink Floyd.

5 out of 5 stars looking for gold? well, here you go!.......2007-04-24

wow. this is totally a mix of KRAUTROCK and HARDCORE PUNK ROCK. there are a few long, drawn out songs with amazing guitar melodies coupled with ferocious vocals. in addition, there plenty of three minute punk songs greatly influenced by the Undertones, Black Flag, and plenty of other amazing bands. maybe you could call them the NEUgative Approach of CANada. or shoegaze hardcore?

not to sound critical but this band is the antidote to a good amount of musical boredom that exists currently. there is nobody around that sounds like these guys and that's a great thing! whether you are an indie rock, punk, stoner, metal, or hardcore fan, this is worth checking out! cheers to Jade Tree for taking a chance on this underground sensation.

it is also worth noting that seeing this band live will convert you. ask people who were at SXSW this year when they played with Mew or when they brough Keith Morris out for a cover of "nervous breakdown".

5 out of 5 stars Are you serious?.......2007-02-28

Amazing record. These guys take the vintage Dischord sound and throw in some Krautrock and blissed-out noise/psych grooves and end up with something else entirely. This album manages to be both incredibly heavy and immediate, yet very hooky and memorable at the same time. Easily one of my favorite albums of the year.

3 out of 5 stars Okay, but it isn't going to change your life .......2007-02-11

While its not bad, Hidden World was certainly hyped to be a lot more than it is. After numerous listens, Hidden World has grown on me a little, but not that much. It has all the elements that I like (strong riffs, thoughtful lyrics, etc.) the album tends to bore me. I dont know whats missing, but I can tell it is not there. I hope to find more to this album as I continue to listen and try to get into it.......but I do not see myself listening to this a year from now.

2 out of 5 stars Why am I bothering with new music? .......2006-12-08

I need to just deal with it; I'm old and out of touch and I think anything new that came out during the last four or five years is a big steaming dumpster load of suck and anyone who likes it must be an idiot. This sounds like a pretentious post-hardcore band with Yosemite Sam on vocals. I swear I heard him sing the lyric, "I'LL KEEL HAUL YA, YA LOW DOWN DIRTY VARMINT!" Do kids like that sort of thing nowadays? Freakin' kids.

Initially released in 1979, this album built on the success of the legendary Carols for Choirs volumes in establishing John Rutter's name with the wider public, and it gave a strong hint that he was more than just a talented composer-arranger. As the many subsequent releases on the Collegium label have also shown, Rutter is a deeply sensitive and musical conductor, alive to the color of words, always allowing phrases to breathe naturally. The accomplished Clare College Choir features male and female voices, the latter providing a more rounded alternative to those world-famous neighbors in Cambridge. Included are many of Rutter's own easy-listening carol arrangements ("King Jesus Hath a Garden" and "Wexford Carol," for example), plus others by the likes of Vaughan Williams and David Willcocks, while "Donkey Carol" and "Mary's Lullaby" are quintessential Rutter originals. Only a few numbers can be classed (statistically) as all-time Christmas faves--the likes of "The Holly and the Ivy" and "Ding Dong Merrily on High"--but this needn't deter anyone from snapping up what is the perfect album to accompany Christmas pud mixing (preferably by candlelight, imagining the twilight scene in Ely Cathedral's Lady Chapel, whose glorious acoustic graces the sound). --Andrew Green

5 out of 5 stars Simply gorgeous.......2007-04-10

I bought this album through Columbia mail order, and it instantly became one of my favorite CDs in my collection of over 2000. When it was scratched beyond playability, I immediately re-purchased it. I have almost everything else John Rutter has put out, as well as the Dale Warland singers from the US.
The music is simply ethereal, and the songs are not the overplayed tunes we hear over and over and over.
My two complaints with the album are that some of the tracks are hard to hear because the singing is so quiet and the sound level is uneven between tracks, and some of the tracks have Rutter's cutesy, saccharine arrangements drowning out the singing (Donkey Carol is the protoypical, and one I frequently skip).
However, the album is so beautiful otherwise, with the Wexford Carol, and the nearly inaudible Jesus Christ The Apple Tree, and several other tracks, that I still have to give it a 5 star rating.

5 out of 5 stars Angelic Music.......2007-01-16

Lovely. So classic and ethereal. Perfect with Christmas dinner, or quiet card games by the fire.

5 out of 5 stars Top list Christmas CD.......2006-12-12

The Holly and the Ivy is one of two absolutely must-have Christmas CDs from Clare College. This is a traditional English choir with adult male and female voices, trained in the utmost clarity and sweetness of voice that is rarely found elsewhere in the singing world. Clare College Choir is coupled with a most delightful orchestral score that seamlessly melds voices and orchestra into something surprisingly merry, uplifting, and completely satisfying. There are both familiar and lesser known carols here, and every single one is a joy.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Christmas CD.......2006-11-15

Too many people are overwhelmed with the more modern Christmas songs out there today and are unaware of the wonderful music available on CDs like this. John Rutter proves his brilliance in arranging and conducting. The music overwhelms the senses and the joy of Christmas overcomes you as you listen. This is one of the most peaceful Christmas CDs I have ever heard. "Wassail Song" is incredible, and if you are ever in a small vocal ensemble, this song is a must to perform. You will not be disappointed when you purchase this CD.

5 out of 5 stars traditional, and comfortingly so..........2005-08-23

In a world where new is better and change occurs at an ever-increasing rate, it seems logical that seasonal music would be included in the rush toward mass marketing and commercial airplay. It is amazing, but not surprising, that "carols" which extol the virtues of an electrically-illuminated ungulant, or which humourously recall the tragic events surrounding the collision of an elderly woman and another ruminating creature of the forest should be featured so prominently in the playlists of the popular culture.

Tired as I am of such artistic efforts, Rutter's efforts in leading the Clare College Choir and Orchestra on this collection come at the right time and to the right place. This is true and beautiful music of the season: it is performed well and interpreted with Rutter's master's touch. For those of us whose tastes run to the traditional, this is welcome stuff indeed.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Jane, we hardly knew ye.......2004-06-16

Ms. Siberry's latest offering is a bit of a disappointment. Come to think of it, her last 4 CDs have been disappointing.
Firstly, she doesn't seem to be writing her own songs anymore. In addition to her voice it was her unique song lyrics that attracted me. Now I don't know what to expect next from her. A collection of Gershwin tunes? A melody of Helen Reddy's greatest hits?
Secondly, less than 40 minutes???? C'mon! When this CD was first advertized on Amazon.com it was going for $24.99. Even at the "reduced rate" of $20.99, I feel like I'm being robbed. Who out there is releasing CDs that are less than 40 minutes??? Jane, you mean to tell me that you can't find a few more ditties? (your oh-too-clever liner notes notwithstanding)
Thirdly, as a physician and a music lover I feel duty-bound to say this: Ms. Siberry, stop smoking! You can hear the effects in your voice (beyond the expected changes that go with age), & your photographs are downright scary! Yikes!

3 out of 5 stars Pretty, but unsatisfying.......2004-02-04

This Jane Siberry "hymns" collection sounds nice, but I had a couple of problems with it. Primarily, her song arrangements are thick with harmony arrangements that tend to obscure the original melody in clouds of pillowy harmonies (with Jane singing all the parts). On songs such as "I Know That My Redeemer Liveth," the saturated harmonies and fuzzy chamber ensemble make it very difficult to follow the melody. The arrangement also has a curiously quaint feeling, like the music from some Disney animated movie of the 1940's. I half expected Jiminy Cricket to start talking about how Pinnochio could become a real boy.

When Jane sings a melody with minimal harmony, as on the lovely "Jesus Christ the Apple Tree" and "If God Be For Us," the effect is much more powerful and enhcanting.

Most of Jane's music in recent years has consisted of her versions of other people's songs. Her previous album Hush was a similar collection of traditional songs. Although I enjoyed Hush more than Shushan, I would still hope that next Jane will return to doing some new songs of her own!

1 out of 5 stars Don't encourage her.......2003-12-14

I've heard one cut of this CD on the radio -- I know that my Redeemer liveth -- and it is without a doubt the worst recording I have ever heard. Siberry's entire take on the piece is just plain wrong, and to make matters worse, her intonation is awful in places and she seems to have no idea what she is singing about, especially when she sings "and when worms destroy this body". I cringe when I think of her doing "How beautiful are the feet". Jane, leave the Messiah arias to those who can sing well, and in tune, and the world will be a better place.

5 out of 5 stars A True Spiritual.......2003-12-12

I just saw Jane perform this collection of music here in Calgary Live at the UofC and it was truly a moving experience especially at this time of the year when everyone makes their seasonal homage to the Nutcracker. Anyway I bought the cd there and have been listening to it all morning mesmerized by the uplifting moments it creates that take you on a collaborative journey with Jane and the other players. Each track is so incredible thoughtful in honouring its inspirations, and sincerely thankful for the places the pieces have brought the artist.

The liner notes are extensive and provide the evolutionary flow through the ages of the pieces. There is a sense that in the midst of all the extraordinary loveliness Jane weaves around you musically, that she is having a really good time, at moments its simply playful.

Anyway the album is a really worthwhile collection, its a great gift for the holidays due to its inspirational qualities, and if you can manage -- it go see Jane on this tour because you'll come away from those 2 1/2 hours with her and her friends uplifted beyond your imagination.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars all Christmas,all the Time.......2007-01-10

This two cd offering has almost all my favorites.the classics, not the Rudolph ones. Can't recommend enough.Listen and read Dickens...That's enough Christmas for anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Title makes a big claim, but it absolutely delivers..........2006-12-02

This album provides 2.5 hours of excellent carols, from excellent choirs and soloists, and with great sound. I was worried that a compilation this large, and with such an extravagent title, would be B-side offerings, but that's not the case at all.

This isn't an album if you are looking for something "fresh and new." The arrangements are traditional, and even newer carols are done in a fairly conservative style. But that said, some of the pieces provide the best orchestration and voice arrangement I have ever heard. This is like the pinnacle of the classic English Christmas carol; clean, precise, glorious and celebratory.

5 out of 5 stars Its time to be seasonal.......2005-12-16

This album contains traditional carols performed in a traditional way at the best quality. It is an excellent album to ensure the spirit of christmas is present and to bring the true meaning of christmas back. The double CD selection has all the golden favourites as well as not so wellknown carols to complete a very good christmas album. Merry Christmas to you all!

4 out of 5 stars Great Christmas Companion.......2007-01-19

I originally bought this item because I love the song "Mary Did You Know?" Natalie Cole's voice only made it that much more enjoyable. The best surprise on the CD was a duet with her father. I really love the sound of their two voices together.

    5 out of 5 stars A Natalie Cole Christmas.......2006-11-06

I enjoyed Ms. Cole's CD. I have always listened to her father's CD during the holidays and now I can listen to hers too. It was quite enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars Classy performance from a Classy woman.......2005-12-02

Natalie Cole is a beautiful person and I've long admired her musical work. This Christmas album is no exception. Her silky but strong voice really serves her and us well in songs like "My Grown-Up Christmas List", "Sweet Little Jesus Boy", and "The Christmas Song" which she, thanks to modern technology, sings with her father Nat King Cole. While I don't usually don't care for the jazzed up or modernized versions of traditional Christmas songs I have to admit that Natalie really turned out a nice piece of work with her upbeat version of "Sleigh Ride".

The London Symphony Orchestra really compliments Natalie's voice. Songs like "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" and "Christmas Waltz" are two songs in which the Symphony stands out.

Lastly, Natalie Cole has selected songs that focus on the actual Christmas story and or on the spirit of good well that are part of the birth of Christ. She hasn't tried to reinvent any of these songs or alter the arrangement to the point that they are no longer recognizable. She has used her talent to provide listeners with beautiful vocalizations of these Christmas songs and the London Symphony Orchestra for the beautiful arrangements, music and background vocals.

5 out of 5 stars Natalie may not be Nat , but she is certainly VERY GOOD!.......1999-12-11

This album is softer, more mellow then her best-selling "Holly and Ivy." With the strong support of the London Symphony Orchestra, Ms. Cole shows several facets of herself as a singer. Natalie can be attacked, for lacking the edge, the individuality that any singer (ecspecially a "Jazz Singer") needs to set themselves apart from the others. Yet one can not deny that Ms. Cole has a very strong musical ear, a solid voice, and a warmth that is all her own! Yet Ms. Cole is not a "Jazz Singer," she would be best described as a "Pop/Jazz Singer." The Magic of Christmas is certainly a Pop/Jazz album. Her voice is soft like silk, and yet earthy-strong and soaring! She is gifted. Natalie not only listened to music as a child, she absorbed the music of her father, Louie, Ella, Aretha, etc.. into the fabric of who she is. Would I like Natalie to be more authentic, less pleasing and sweet, less perfect, a "JAZZ SINGER." Well, sure! I am a huge jazz vocal fan. Yet is that who she is? Can she sing a song like Sarah or Carmen? Perhaps not. Perhaps as she gets older, and is truly satisfied with her POPular success she will do less "MOR" music..perhaps not. All I know is, her holiday album is filled with great singing, excellent musicians and arrangers. It is a mellow Natalie, bringing in the holdiays with such class that even Nat himself would be proud of. The critic above is correct, Natalie has added yet another piece to the greatness of the Cole legacy. A legacy that both father and daughter share. Lets remember...Natalie has survived in the industry since the year of my bith-1975. That is close to 25 years folks, I am sorry, but her father didn't make that happen. Natalie a great many of her supporters made that happen.

    5 out of 5 stars Magical.......1999-12-07

Once again, Ms. Cole displays class and sophistication on her new Christmas album. Nobody can do to a song what this lady does. I have said it before and I will say it again. Natalie is in a class all by herself. Her voice is so clear, so sweet, so strong. What else is there to say. A great voice with great musicians, how can you go wrong.
