In the short time since they grouped together a few years ago to form their sensationally successful trio, the Irish Tenors have already put out an impressive array of recordings and DVDs, including some bona fide gooseflesh-inducing live concert performances. So, if you still have the enviable pleasure of discovering these amazing vocalists--or want to turn a friend on to their musical charms--this compilation CD will do the trick nicely. It brings together such classics as "Danny Boy," "Toora Loora Looral," "Last Rose of Summer," and "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" (featuring John McDermott)--all rendered with the kind of passionate, heartfelt, and harmonious crooning that is their signature style, whether they're singing as an ensemble or as highlighted soloists. And even if you have the complete Irish Tenors, this anthology includes several numbers not found on their previously released CDs. Hard to think of a sweeter treat for a fan of singing too good to ever go out of fashion. --Sarah Chin

4 out of 5 stars Irish at it's best........2007-05-07

This album is really the number two album from this trio. It is very good and well worth the investment. The five star album by The Irish Tenors would have to be Heritage. Both albums rate high in my book.

5 out of 5 stars Irish Magic.......2006-08-21

This is my first CD of the Irish Tenors. And what a joy! I played it as soon as it arrived. I like the blend of their voices, the passion and enthusiasm they bring to this CD. What I find is a real treat is the words to all the songs are in the booklet.I love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Just got your Kleenex.......2005-12-25

I suggest a box of Kleenex for each person in the room when you play this CD or VHS recording. Mom won't let me play it anymore because she...well, you know what I mean.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2005-12-12

When it's cold and frightful here, I play The BOYZ!

So wonderful. So much fun.

Up here in backwash Maine, there ain't much, believe me. But these guys are great. Sincere, care about what they're doing, true artists.

Ah, to go to Ireland again. Well, not unless the price of natural gas recedes!

5 out of 5 stars The Very Best of the Irish Tenors is just that!.......2005-01-22

This recording is wonderful. Ronan's "last Rose of summer" is unique, the Percy French medley shows all three in great voice, Finbar's Maggie is wonderful and the laurels have to go to Anthony for his magnificent rendition of "She moved through the fair", wow!!!!

Well worth buying.

2 out of 5 stars not to great.......2007-04-04

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

3 out of 5 stars Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

1 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for........2004-07-04

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

1 out of 5 stars Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

Album Description

RPWL was originally formed in Germany in 1997 as a Pink Floyd Tribute band and though they have held on to many of the "Floydian" qualities that helped them to shape their sound they have also managed to seamlessly blend in their own ideas and personalities. They made their U.S. debut through Inside Out Music America in 2002 with Trying To Kiss The Sun which garnered critical acclaim throughout the US progressive rock community. Now with the release of World Through My Eyes, their second release for IOMA, RPWL hopes to firmly establish themselves as an original voice. Deftly blending progressive rock with elements of psychedelia and middle-eastern rhythms, RPWL paint a hauntingly beautiful portrait of flower-eyed surrealism. Driving drum beats fuel hypnotic melodies that swirl lazily and dream-like around the listener. RPWL recently headlined the 2004 Rights of Spring Festival (ROSfest) in Philadelphia and they hope to grace shores once again in support of the new release.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A Good Catch.......2007-07-02

RPWL, a German progressive rock band, starts to break out into the musical world with their fourth album "World Through My Eyes." I really disagree with some of the reviewers saying that this band is like a Pink Floyd clone. It seems obvious to me that RPWL have their own sound, there's no denying the Pink Floyd influence, but it in no way overshadows their own sound.

One thing I find hard to do is label a specific genre to this band, I dislike labels anyway, I only see it as being good music. However, for the sake of categorizing what it sounds like, I guess there is a big psychedelic vibe accompanied by pop and progressive rock with a touch of blues. Either way, the stuff is brilliant.

I know this album is not a concept album, but the songs seem to flow very well. "World Through My Eyes" is definitely an album that you will find yourself listening to all the way through. That being said, some songs stood out to me more than others.

The opening track "Sleep" is a very psychedelic tune that combines elements of rock with that of Middle-Eastern sounding melodies. This is a great song to just sit down and listen to, and as its name suggests, you could just fall asleep to it. The next song, "Start the Fire," kicks off with a very melodic guitar melody and is a great psychedelic rock song. The track "Roses" features Ray Wilson from Stiltskin as the lead vocalist and he really has a great voice, this song showcases just how great his voice is. Like others have mentioned, this is just a great pop song.

Then there's my personal favorite song "3 Lights" which is another brilliant mellow rock song. This is Yogi Lang's finest vocal performance and keyboard performance on the whole album in my opinion. When he starts singing in all the harmonies I just feel so at peace. The keyboards are also phenomenal, especially the synthesizer solo about half-way through the song. I think this track is the best on the album. My last favorite would be the last song "Wasted Land" the song is just so catchy and the instrumentation is wonderful.

Well that's about it for RPWL I am certainly happy that I stumbled across this band and hearing this album has now given me the urge to explore the rest of their discography.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD!.......2007-04-06

I was turned on to this band by the Roger Waters (of Pink Floyd) International fan club (REG). I am so glad I bought it! It is a fantastic CD. Every song is good. Some are just amazing. The more you hear it the more you like it. At first it sounded so much like Gilmour's newer Pink Floyd (Division Bell, Momentary Lapse) that it was hard for me to hear it on it's own merits however after a few times I began to see they have their own style which blends Peter Gabriel, Pink Floyd, with elements of Beatles and more. Now that I have heard it over and over I feel this record is better than any of the new Pink Floyd stuff, better than Gilmour's solo record which came out last year (which I like). As a real Waters fan I can't say it is better than Roger's solo work but it is up there with some of my favorite CD's of all time. The title song "World through my Eyes" is my favorite and sounds the least Floydian of all the songs on the CD. It has elements of Gabriel and maybe NIN in it and when I play it while riding my bike and the beat comes in I feel like I can ride faster and harder than ever. It just rips! You will not regret buying this CD! Get it now!

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful world.......2006-07-16

I would highly recommend this release to fans of Porcupine Tree, Pink Floyd or Riverside. The production is great and the songwriting top-notch. Very rich melodies, excellent instrumentation and smooth, calming vocals abound. Much has been said of comparisons to Floyd, but I find the vocals and the use of organ on some tracks the only real similarities. To me, the guitar sound is more similar to U2 (which isn't a bad thing!) The albums starts off very nicely with "Sleep" (which isn't a sleeper at all,) and continues very nicely with some other great melodies. My favorites are "Sleep," Everything Was Not Enough," and "Roses," although none of the tracks are weak. More accessible than Pink Floyd, but still complex enough to entertain any prog fan.

4 out of 5 stars Worth A Look For All Prog Fans.......2006-06-23

RPWL is a German-born group that started out as a Pink Floyd tribute act. While the Floyd influence is clear, this band should not be dismissed as a knock-off. "Roses" has a melodic beauty that the Pink rarely aimed for, while "Start the Fire" and "Wasted Land" show a distinctive knack for hooks. This is definitely progressive rock, but in more traditional bytes (not 20-minute forays). There are moments when they sound as much like the Moody Blues or Saga as Floyd but, in any case, any fan of prog should definitely give a listen.

5 out of 5 stars Best Progressive Rock Band Since Porcupine Tree.......2006-04-13

This band is awesome, they sound like a mix between all the great progressive rock bands especially early Genesis and King Crimson and in some ways they sound better because they don't sound dated at all and they have such an original sound. When I first started listining to this album I didn't really like it because I wasn't expecting much and I didn't give it the amount of attention it deserved. After a couple listens I was completly blown away by such songs as Sleep, Everything Was Not Enough, 3 Lights, and Day On My Pillow, every song on it is amazing.I think that this is a concept album about religion and I really hope that you buy this album because it is truly life changing and this band deserves to be heard.

5 out of 5 stars What ??.......2006-12-10

The idiot from Virginia thought it a bit strange that an American black man would give the communists a chance. Looking back from modern perspective is easier than what he had to go on in the thirtes. Gee, I wonder why a black man would do that after all that southern hospitality, segregation, and steady work you gave the "black folk". Not to mention all those nighttime campfires you had going in their honor.
While I might be from New York I certainly would not be called a bleeding heart liberal but I can certainly understand why the poor soul was looking elsewhere. You are either ignorant of history and its influences on people or you are a totally unsympathetic jackass!!

Paul Robeson, who was brainwashed into
beleiving Communist rhetoric (which is
strange as hell for an Amer-I-can black
man). A good singing voice but all cover
songs! Come on, Paul!

3 out of 5 stars A let down.......2004-09-24

I own several Robeson recordings and purchased this one with high hopes as it has a great selection of tracks. Unfortunately given the excellent recording quality of "Songs for Free Men" and "The Paul Robeson Oddyssey", the remasters from what I assume are 78's and possibly radio are a let down and mar what could have been an excellent album.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive Paul Robeson compilation.......2003-09-19

This 2 CD set of Paul Robeson is the definitive collection providing a decent overview of his work in 50 tracks all wonderfully restored from 78s as usual for ASV, with spirituals, show tunes, Shakespeare-like readings, and more done with a trademark bass voice and orchestration that backs up Paul perfectly and he would later be one of the first civil rights activists. The first disc is a reissue of the single disc "Ol' Man River-His 25 Greatest" on ASV containing "Ol' Man River," "Mighty Like a Rose," "Joshua Fit De Battle Ob Jericho," "Carry Me Back To Green Pastures," "Lazy Bones," and many more classics which is also available here at Amazon for those who only want a single disc of Paul's work and the 2nd disc contains 25 more classics including "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen," "The Old Folks At Home," "My Old Kentucky Home," "Wagon Wheels," "Git On Board, Little Children," and many more. In other words, all 50 of these tracks are essential to any early pop, folk, gospel, blues, etc. music fan and this is the set to introduce yourself to his work in a convenient 2 CD package with the usual great liner notes and details on the original 78s ASV provides with each CD released in their Living Era series.

4 out of 5 stars Pleased.......2006-07-31

I was very pleased with this product, my sister recently got married and I was responsible for the music.... I am happy that I made this selection, everyone was happy with the music chosen for the ceremony, I would recommend it to any one looking for wedding music

5 out of 5 stars A wedding minister's review.......2000-01-16

I just love this album. I am a wedding minister and many couples ask me about music for their ceremony. I am happy to recommend they buy this album for a wonderful selection of wedding music both traditional and contemporary performed by orchestras, keyboardists, harpists and others including a lovely soprano. One disc is traditional wedding selections and the other is contemporary. The selections are arranged in the order of a ceremony with choices for each part of the ceremony. The CD would be appropriate to use in a wedding if live music is not planned. I plan to add a link to this site from my website just so couples can check this album out for themselves.

Before she became a recording sensation and a dyed-in-the-wool member of the Lilith Fair sisterhood (thanks to her 1996 Everywoman anthem, Bitch), Oregon-born Meredith Brooks was an aspiring rocker plying her trade with a variety of Northwestern bands. She tried her hand at recording in 1984, though the results were never released. Not until 1997, that is, when mercenary forces who owned the tapes hoped to cash in on Brooks's sudden rise to the top, releasing "See It Through My Eyes" against her wishes. The album is an artifact of flashy '80s pop--think Pat Benatar, Quarterflash, and Scandal--and would have held its own back then had it been given a proper chance. Today though, songs like "Video Idol," "Company Man," and "Who's Fooling Who" merely sound dated. Sometimes success is just a bitch. --Daniel Durchholz

2 out of 5 stars Ouch!!!.......2006-11-11

If you love Meredith Brooks music like I do, you do not want this album.
If you actually enjoyed the 80's MTV pop era, you might.

5 out of 5 stars YEEESSSSS. I LOVE IT.......2005-02-17

Let me be the First to say,I Did'nt know Meredith ad it in her. It's Amazing Hearing this album compared to her other work. See, im only 19 years old and wise enough to know that when an artist does something alternative to themselves you have to view it as "Someone you hav'nt heard before" then everything turns out great. I can see why everyone hates this CD, Two reasons, Either you hate 80's music or you just wont except this coming from somone you expect somethign totally different. Don't listen to it as Meredith,Listen to it as a hot 80's Record and you'll be pleased. I most definatley am trilled by the hot get-up-and-dance-pop-Guitars of "LOOK", The cute-sy beat of "JESSICA" and most of all the ballad "SEE IT THROUGH MY EYES" the title track. How fun is that?

GOES TO SHOW YOU HOW WE ALL HAVE DIFFERENT TASTE. I REALLY WOULD BE MISSING OUT IF I WENT BY THESE REVIEWS. Also if you love this album. Check out SHANIAH TWAINS LIMELITE SESSIONS! it's the exact same as "SEE IT THROUGH MY EYES". it has her early work. OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN fans LOOK NO FURTHER!!!!!!!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars What Happened??.......2002-03-28

Ok, so I love Meredith Brooks! At least, I have her other album in my car and play it non stop and sing along till I can't talk. It's fun, it's original, it has style! Every song is different and has something to say. She's new, she's in your face, she's not as shrieky as Alanis (I do like Alanis by the way), but she still puts it all out there......on her OTHER album.

I was so thrilled to hear she had come out with a new album. After how much I had played the other CD to death I was freaked to have a new one. I put it on and was devistated. What was this??? I don't think there's a difference between any of the songs! They're a weird combination of 80's pop music and 50's bop she bop stuff. She changed her style so much it's not even recognizable! Now Madonna changed her style all the time and managed to get away with it, but this just KILLED Meredith's career! Have you heard anything new from her? Would you have known there was a new album based on the radio? NO!

I wish I could say better about this album, and I seriously hope Meredith will come out with another album more geared to the styles of her first fun loving album, but if there's any more of this, I'm not buying it!

Don't waste your money, just buy the first album.

1 out of 5 stars This simply is the worse album I have ever heard........1999-04-03

Yeah exactly, I was ashamed to be an 80s music lover after hearing this one!

4 out of 5 stars GREATER IF IT REALLY WAS RELEASED A LONG TIME AGO.......1998-11-07

You know, it doesn't make much sense to release a 1984 recorded album with gutsy 80's pop and dance when we are now experiencing the feels of Alanis Morissette, Fiona Apple, and Meredith Brooks. Wait a minute, Meredith Brooks?? Yeah, if you were reading this review and didn't know it was about her, then would her name come up when 80's rock is mentioned? Well as a matter of fact, this is that same girl who brought you "Bitch" and her album BLURRING THE EDGES (her "debut" that features pure alternative beats and rock feels). Anyways, this album is too late. It could have made it huge if Brooks would have released it. In case you didn't know, she recorded this album and held back and stayed back for over a decade to grow. This album is only for people who like that retro stuff. I think the songs all sound the same, but they are still good. Hey, whatever pleases you. Meredith sure has proved there wasn't a need to release SEE IT THROUGH MY EYES at all when she astonished us with her rock music of today, but I do recommend this one for all the fans. I don't think you'll be dissappointed. Just don't expect something like her music sounds today!!

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Dreams.......2005-11-23

This type of album would not be released today. All of the arrangements are impeccably done...I have read many a book at night with this playing in the background. It's a shame that Morton Gould gets lumped into the "elevator music" category by today's so called music critics that can't reference anything before 1980 that wasn't spoon fed to them by Rolling Stone or MTV. It's worth it for the Living Stereo recording alone!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful nocturne.......2005-06-28

Wow, I'm glad I bought this when I did! Evidently it's gone out of print again... Kudos to RCA for releasing it on CD in the first place. I bought the vinyl years ago, and spent many a pleasant evening fading into dreamland listening to Mr. Gould's orchestra working through "All Through the Night" etc... Even if it weren't for the beautiful music within, this one would be worth it for the artwork on the front and back covers alone. A beautiful effort from one of America's great 20th century composers and conductors, Richmond Hill's own Morton Gould

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good performance of good music.......2002-04-05

I find less to criticize than others in this music and performance. If you know MacDowell, you know the kinds of things to expect from these songs. Not great music, but still beautiful genteel songs. MacDowell lets the lyricism flow smoothly. Most of the songs float along in the 6/8 rhythm MacDowell used so often. Concentrating on the melodic line, some of the occasional awkwardly thorny harmonies you can find in his miniatures fade into the background. Indeed, some may think the piano is too far in the background here. Too bad, because the late James Barbagallo obviously had quite a gift for MacDowell interpretation. Check out his recordings of MacDowell's solo piano works. What of tenor Tharp? Some may find his voice a little too thin, with a bit too much vibrato. But I say the songs are well sung regardless. Maybe the problem is that the songs really required a woman's voice. But what's done is done. These complete songs needed to be recorded, and this performance quite adequate, reservations notwithstanding. Over all, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this recording.

2 out of 5 stars Tepid music, tepid performances.......2000-03-26

I'm sorry to have to say it, but this recording contains music that is undistinguished in performances that are competent only. The music is Grieg-and-water. The American tenor's voice is light-weight and charmless. The pianist is excellent. You can't beat the price, though, if you really want to hear this repertoire.

    Amazon.com essential recording

Purcell fans will delight in this collection of 30 of his 85 secular songs. Barbara Bonney, singing with ease and controlled fervor, steals the recording with her endearing sound and impeccable musicianship. Soprano Susan Gritton brings a more dramatic perspective, singing with zest and a little edge that almost, but never quite, grates. Sometimes, however, she vibrates mildly out of control. Tenors Charles Daniels and Roger Covey-Crump sing with grace, joviality, and tenderness, but both are a little shallow throughout the bottom. Countertenor James Bowman occasionally stumbles with intonation, but always lands standing upright. This buffet of various voices captivates the listener's attention span, totally avoiding potential monotony. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

5 out of 5 stars Purcell stole my heart.......2001-02-08

Alas, with the help of phenomenally expressive singers on this CD, Purcell has stolen my heart. I listened to this CD a few times then immediately emptied my pocketbook to the nearest consort putting on a Purcell concert. Such poverty is love.
