About the Artist
E’lissa Jones is a soulful singer/songwriter, a pianist and classically trained violinist.  An exceptionally talented artist, E’lissa possesses a dark and powerful voice, with a velvety quality reminiscent of jazz singers.

Born into a musically gifted family from Aurora, Colorado, E’lissa began singing and playing piano at the age of 5.  Her mother, Robbie Jones, was a professional singer and pianist who turned down a recording contract from Motown Records to raise her family.  Her father Billy Jones is a tuba player and a retired Air Force serviceman.

"At a very early age, my mother trained her girls to sing harmony and play piano.  At the age of 5, I remember my mother keeping us up late singing in thirds with one another. We were to be the next Jones' Girls."

E’lissa Jones wrote her first song at the age of 7 and began studying violin at the age of 10.  At eleven, she was writing love songs and short classical works for violin and piano.  At fifteen, she became the principal violinist for a popular string quartet, Ebony Strings, and performed in numerous television shows and festivals throughout Colorado.

E’lissa studied violin at the University of Northern Colorado on a full scholarship.  While at UNC, she rediscovered her love for songwriting. Since then, she has written a catalog of over 250 songs.  She is musically influenced by a variety of styles, ranging from jazz to country.  Her vocal influences include Karen Carpenter, Julie London, Roberta Flack, and Sarah McLachlan.

Marvellous!.......2005-11-26

I don't play violin, and I can't even read music, but as a classical music amateur I find this CD outstanding. Even an incompetent like myself can easily understand why Perlman is regarded as one of the greates violinists ever. This is a marvellous collection of pieces. The rendition of "Chanson Russe" by itself is, in my opinion, worth more than the price of the CD. If you listen to the audio samples on Amazon's pages and you like violin you will surely understand why I like this CD so much. I am grateful to People like Perlman, who make this world a better place to live in.

The best violinist ever!.......2001-01-26

All I can say to this CD is it's the best I've ever heard. In this CD, Itzhak Perlman truly demonstrates his best performances of the past years. I have always been a great admirer of Perlman, but since I own this CD, it's all I've listened to for the past three months. I myself play the violin and Perlman has become an inspiration to me, almost a musical idol. For any of those violinists out there, especially young musicians, who don't feel any excitement about playing the violin, listen to this CD and I promise you, you will strive to being able to play like this man does. He is truly the best musician I've ever known.

Album Description

Berliners say New York's Rebecca Garfein is causing a revival of Reform Judaism in Germany; this mezzo-soprano is making history with her music, recorded in the country where her great -grandmother perished in the Holocaust. In 1997, she became the first female cantor to sing in a synagogue in Germany; where she performed as part of Berlin's International Jewish Cultural Festival; and this exquisite 1998 release captures that ground - (and stained-glass ceiling) - breaking moment. It contains Jewish songs and prayers in Hebrew and Yiddish, selections from the Book of Ruth and Song of Songs - liturgical music previously only chanted my male clergy - operatic in character, performed in what was once the women's gallery in the Oranienburger Strasse Synagogue before its destruction. This live performance was attended by Jews and non-Jews, women and men, together, shattering the historical separation of faiths and genders. Beautiful, significant, and highly recommended!

Not at all what I expected.......2006-01-21

Hmm... Ok, maybe it was not the best reason to want to buy this CD, but I heard one of the songs on it, Hashkiveynu, performed (partially) during an episode of the West Wing, and it sounded AMAZING (it was NOT the same cantor as on this CD). I am not Jewish and not even very spiritual, but I wanted to have that song in my collection.
I immediately searched the web for the info, got the name of the chant and found this CD. I almost purchased it without listening, when I found a different site, where they actually have rather long excerpts (2 min.) of most tracks, so I listened to them.
Boy, was I relieved and disappointed at once! Relieved that I didn't buy the CD and disappointed that I couldn't get the song I wanted (I was willing to buy a whole CD for just 1 song, that's how much it impressed me).
The song sounds very little like the one from the West Wing, although I do believe that the site where I found the info speficially pointed to this CD as having a recording of the same song used in the show. And I'm sorry to say it but the voice also doesn't hold a candle to the one used on the show - way too "operatic", as mentioned by many, and harsh and even unpleasant-sounding to me. It took all the charm and candor right out of the song (in the show, they had a much more natural voice do the song). I also agree that the choir does not mesh well with the soloist.
If anyone knows where and if I can purchase a recording of this song done by a different singer (if it can be the one from the West Wing, I'll be thrilled), please, let me know. In the meantime, I'm passing on this CD...

Cantor Rebecca Garfein has a magnificent voice which expresses the oft-overlooked nuances in the music she has chosen for this recording. Able to perform equally well in the metzo soprano and soprano ranges, the cantor delights the listener with thrilling high notes and sultry lower registers.

Organist-Choirmaster Arnold Ostlund, Jr. skillfully chooses registrations which enhance both the cantorial performance and the superb choral blend.

Jewish songs and prayers beautifully sung!.......2004-01-18

Cantor Rebecca Garfein's Sacred Chants is a memorial tribute to the cultural and spiritual greatness of the pre-war German Jewish synagogue. Some of the numbers were composed by Jews on Jewish themes -- for example, Mah Tovu by Cantor Meir Finklestein or Ahavat Olam by Cantor Morris Barash. Other numbers were composed by non-Jews, but they express traditional Jewish values. Throughout, Cantor Garfein sings with love and passion in the spirit of her tradition. Additionally, the beautiful organ music is wonderful to hear for those of us who have enjoyed hearing organ music as part of our Reform Jewish liturgy.

Good but is this Jewish?.......2004-01-07

I have to admit, it am in the process of converting and wanted a contemporary collection of Jewish music in the house. I was especially excited because it featured a female cantor. Unfortunately, I played this CD and it...reminded me of church not synagogue! Lovely for what it is though, with the opera voice, choir and organ music. Not quite what I expected.

An excellent performance of rare Rachmaninov pieces.......2004-03-31

This is the finest treatment of Rachmaninov's intricate, complex, and well-structured Sonata for Cello and Piano (Op. 19) I've yet heard, and the CD contains many other cello/piano arrangments of Rachmaninov songs that you won't find elsewhere. The challenges inherent in such recordings are numerous: finding a skilled cellist and pianist who can master the material in a cooperative fashion without competing with each other; achieving proper balance of the instruments and excellent audio quality (we've all heard the bad recordings); and a good selection of pieces. This CD excels in all these areas. Moray Welsh and Martion Roscoe are to be commended for their performances that capture so well the wistful, slightly melancholic nature of Rachmaninov's early pieces. Black Box is to be commended for making such a treasured recording available to us all. Absolutely beautiful.

"Memorable Melodie".......2003-11-25

"Who is this?" a co-worker asked excitedly when I popped the new E'lissa Jones CD into my disc drive a few weeks ago. It's true: the first track off This Melodie, "Could It Be," is an instant hit single, with its catchy soul-lite chorus and angelic, uplifting vocals. But This Melodie also goes much deeper. "Not About Love" finds Jones bending her vocals into Sinead O'Connor-type contortions, wails, and yelps, as her lyrics paint the desperation of love gone sour. She combines the politics of What's Goin' On with the sexuality in Let's Get It On in her feminist song "Jungle Ho." "Tuff Skin" finds Jones back in Lilith territory, miming both Tracy Chapman and Desiree to great effect. Whether she's playing the world-wise woman, innocent little girl, or political rabble rouser, Jones has a great ear for style and melody that makes this particular Melodie most memorable."

"My first thought, after only a moment into the first song Could It Be on singer/songwriter E'lissa Jones's debut album This Melodie is only this-Wow! This is a woman with a strong, velvet smooth voice, who is bound to be a star. I have to mention that I've been selfishly keeping this CD under wraps from my co-workers and my mother, who asks daily if she can take it to work and listen to it and for this I apologize. But I just can't get enough."
