About the Artist
beth waters fell in love with music at the age of four, when she composed her first songs. a few years later, she began to write songs with her older brother, who was considered a child prodigy. recognizing beth's talent and dedication, her family encouraged her to develop her abilities. years of vocal training and practice gave beth an extraordinary vocal range and a deliciously lush tone. at age 19 beth recorded her first independent cd, "don't look back," which received radio play and strong reviews for the songwriting, as well as the raw vocal talent. shortly thereafter, she relocated to san francisco, where she continued to perform as a solo artist. in 1999, she recorded “ask the sky,” a five song ep which shows growth and maturity as a singer and musician, and continues to carve a niche for her as a songwriter, having been added to radio playlists across california. in the winter of 1999, beth formed a band to add depth and diversity to her live performances. she drafted nate fadelli (drums), dan porter (fretless bass), and travis ballstadt (guitar & backup vocals) to complement her piano. after months of hard work and rehearsing, the band has been playing clubs in the bay area, quickly expanding its fan base. they have been featured twice on alice@97.3’s “sarah & vinnie” morning show. the band recently released a full length cd, “over the tide,” on mermaid mafia records. the disc contains unreleased and re-mastered studio tracks, and showcases the band’s live show with two live cuts and two radio performances. with numerous powerful songs coming out of the “over the tide” cd sessions and live shows, the band is currently in the pre-production stage of a cd to be recorded summer 2000 with notable producer paul wright.

Excellent performer.......2007-03-09

This plates are wonderful. I was charmed, and when I close my eyes now, I see scenes with American in Paris or Porgy and Bess but my favorite piece of music is Rhapsody in Blue. It's more than excellent is fantastic. Jack Gibbons perfectly feels the unique tone Gershwin's music, the mixture rythms of jazz with influences of impressionists and clear and beauty melodies.
I'm fascinating.

A unique project.......2006-11-23

Gibbons' undertaking is unique: to reconstruct and then execute and record the note-for-note playing of Gershwin as documented on the composers' piano rolls, sound recordings and certain published arrangements. I agree with the reviewer who points out that the result is like a library and not a recital you sit back and listen to (or get up and dance to). In fact Gibbons does some editing of his "library" now and then, and clearly documents it in his liner notes: in some reconstructions he augments accompaniment effects and even the melodic line itself. I don't mind that at all, especially as Gibbons scrupulously accounts for such tampering in his liner notes; but it seems to me that it is in this area of "tampering" that Gibbons the artist is asserting himself...which of course undermines the "library", the "historical archive": you have to search and read a bit to find out when you're hearing only Gershwin and when you're hearing some added Gibbons. I don't mind; Gibbons is a remarkable artist in his own right, not merely an impeccable documentarian. For sheer generosity of production Gibbons' Gershwin must also be unique: 4 cd's, scholar-level liner notes (yes, you need a magnifying glass to read them), and rock-bottom bargain price.

Gershwin historical, manic, perfect, archival.......2006-06-12

First: this is 4 high-end produced cd's (in low-end jewel cases) for the price of 2. The liner notes of all 4 cd's are condensed in a booklet of microscopic print, so you may need to spend the savings on a magnifying glass. MONEY WELL SPENT.
Second: Jack Gibbons plays (and has recorded) the Alkan op 39 etudes (he probably plays a lot more Alkan than that). For those of you not in the know, this is to say he has world-class chops, indeed history-class (Liszt, who never played his friend Alkan, at least in public). But it's also to say that Gibbons knows how to interpret and personalize fantastically difficult piano music. For me, his Alkan op 39 is personal and passionate and real (contrast the facile and over-pedalled Hamelin and the just-the-notes-ma'me Ringeissen). An appreciation of Gibbons' Alkan is important here because while his Alkan is uniquely personal (as such music must be, no matter how hard it is to play) his Gershwin is deliberately impersonal...which is to say: no pianist, no singer would want to reproduce what Gibbons has given us in these 4 cd's, and in fact few listeners will be able to listen for long to these 4 cd's without a respite, a break , some silence, some minimal styling from somebody (anybody) else...which brings me to
Third: This is an archive, not a recital. This is a library, not a program. There is no track-by-track contrast of moods here, no track-by-track concession to easy listening, varied delight, any more than a library shelf of novels is alphabetized by authors' last names as a concession to mood or fancy or taste of the searching patron. This is the documented Gershwin in his recording mode: manic, notey, clever, "on", and never, as generations of stylists found in him, ravishing, tender, longing, sweet, glad, hopeful...person-to-person, in a word. I can listen to these cd's about half an hour at a time, max. This is Gerwhsin, not Gibbons. And this is just one side of Gershwin. He died at 38, in the summer. Brain tumor. A lot of pain.
Finally, Jack Gibbons has given the world a uniquely valuable and easily available resource. Gibbons could now do us a service by playing us some Gershwin as he feels it, as it hits him and makes him sing (as Gershwin, our American Schubert, does to all of us, and as I think Alkan has done to Gibbons). I would love to see a Gershwin stylings by Gibbons now that Gibbons himself has made sure Gershwin in his authenticity is safe and sound.

Here's the whole Gershwin catalog at a great price... Five plus hours of bliss. Definately five stars!

Gibbons, according to a family friend and biographer Edward jablonski "recreates Gershwin's style." I'll never know. I can say this is a lively recording and has the perfect balance. It's neither stuffy and plodding or cute.

Argentina-born mezzo-soprano Bernarda Fink's many acclaimed early music recordings (including an outstanding Gluck Orfeo ed Eurydice) tend to overshadow the width of her repertory, which includes fine discs of Spanish moderns, Schumann, and now, Dvorak. She sings these songs as if to the manner born, giving idiomatic renderings of 33 songs from various stages of Dvorak's career. Some are well-known, such as the ever-popular "Songs My Mother Taught Me," done here splendidly, Fink in fine voice, gently caressing the melody and resisting its ample temptations to overstatement. She brings appropriate zest to the seven songs of Gypsy Melodies, and folk influences in other songs, such as "Good Night," from the Op.73 In Folk Style, are irresistible. In songs like "The Forsaken Maiden," Fink colors her voice to bring out the narrator's deep emotions. Pianist Roger Vignoles, brings out the Schubertian rippling accompaniment in "At the Brook," and partners her elsewhere with expertise. Dvorak Lieder.......2007-03-20

The following is a conversation that took place between Antonin Dvorak and myself.

Dvorak: Hello, how are you today?
me: Good how are you?
Dvorak: Great, I just heard a recording of some Lieder I composed and I'm really happy with it.
me: Really I didn't know that you composed Lieder.
Dvorak: Yeah you really should check it out.
me: You know I just might, buh bye now!

And again about a week later:

me: Hey buddy how are you today?
Dvorak: Good you?
me: Great, hey I did check out that Lieder, great great stuff, you're really a great song composer.
Dvorak: I know and everyone always talks about Schubert being so good! Schubert, Schubert, Schubert... My songs are just as good as his.

Dvorak: Hello?

Anyway I'm sorry about that but this is really a great CD, in my book it ranks right up there with the Schwarzkopf Schubert lieder from EMI, the singing is absolutly wonderful. Harmonia Mundi does such a great job of packaging their products as well. Give it a try...and keep me updated!

Beautiful disc.......2006-05-04

Fink's mezzo voice is warm, creamy and full of expression. The singing is simply gloriously gorgeous, Vignoles offers sympathetic and insightful accompaniment. The songs are a neglected output of Dvorak but are abound with beautiful melodies, unbridled passion and lyrical expressiveness. You will immediately want to turn on the 30th track, the famous "Song my mother taught me", and you will be pleased with this beautiful interpretation as well as with the whole cycle. An hour of sheer delight.

Album Description

American pianist Richard Dowling performs virtually all of Gershwin's original works for solo piano along with several new transcriptions of Gershwin improvisations from disc recordings and player piano rolls. Dowling transcribed several of the tracks himself including a world premiere of Gershwin's own three-minute rendition of the main theme of "Rhapsody in Blue." Rounding out the disc are Earl Wild's Seven Virtuoso Etudes on Themes by Gershwin.

I heard one of Dowling's concerts and he's awesome! I play this CD in my car and almost got a speeding ticket because of it. Richard really knows the Gershwin style. It's upbeat and a lot of fun to listen to over and over.

He's Got Rhythm!.......2001-08-31

Richard's got the most amazing fingers (and ears)! He's such a good pianist that you'll swear you're hearing old George playing himself. If you love music from 1920s and 30s New York, this is about as authentic as it gets. The Earl Wild pieces at the end will blow you away. You'll want to listen to this CD over and over because the music is happy and the execution is perfect.

The masterful work displayed on this CD is a pleasure to listen to. The speed with which the keystrokes are perfectly executed is simply astounding. I have only had the CD for about a week and have enjoyed it completely many times.

Since I heard Beth on KLOS's "Local Licks" one Sunday night, I have become a huge fan. She is an amazing singer/songwrite, on par with Tori Amos and Beth Orton. She's that good. Run to buy her CD's. Someday, you'll say "I was lstening to her waaaay before she became famous".

I spend a lot of time with independent artists, and I know there are few that are truly expeptional. Beth Waters and her her band are one of the few. Impassioned vocals and inventive arrangements are combined with well-crafted songs and great performances that never let me down. 'Swonderful and Fascinatin'.......2001-09-24

A slim volume of Gershwin's own arrangements of his popular songs exists, and has been recorded by many pianists. Unfortunately, these arrangements exist for only a scant few of Gershwin's songs, and they are rather abbreviated and dare I say it? Unsatisfying. Enter Jack Gibbons. Mr. Gibbons has meticulously researched George Gershwin's own playing of these pieces, from old radio shows, movie soundtracks, and other archival sources and he plays them exactly the way the composer did. He kids you not about "authentic". This is about as close as you can get to the source, and the recorded sound is spectacular. Bravo!

Not many people know Reader's Digest has a music operation, because only in recent years are their products distributed at retail. A high quality product.
