Can't go wrong with Garnet...what musical talent, what a voice, what a song writer....another good one is "Live at the Black Sheep".
I have seen him twice and hope to see him more whenever he makes it out to Central California...

5 out of 5 stars Pretty amazing.......2006-08-16

About 6 months ago, shortly after I had just 'discovered' the music of Stan Rogers by stumbling across "Home in Halifax' and being utterly stunned by its beauty and power, someone said "Have you ever listened to anything by Garnet Rogers?" Well, I had to buy and listen to all of Stan Rogers CD's thoroughly before I was ready to move on. But, this CD is amazing - the songs and Garnet's voice burrow their way into your heart and become integral to everything that matters. Summer Lightning and Seeds of Hope are 2 of the very best songs I have ever known, and Frankie and Johnny tears at your heart and puts so much into healthy perspective. How can you listen to Night Drive and not feel inside the flashing by of nighttime road lights, the dotted pavement lines, passing cars, the deep pounding heartbeat and the stark alone-ness of the dark and of loss? All I can say is, if Garnet Rogers ever reads these reviews, thank you very much for your time, your talent, your poetry and insight - I really needed this CD and its music at this point in my life.

5 out of 5 stars I could listen to Garnet Rogers' voice for hours.......2006-04-01

Garnet Rogers has one of the most pleasant voices that I've ever heard. If all he did was recite names from the phone book, I'd listen to him. But he doesn't do that. He sings beautiful songs and plays instruments superbly. The instrumental opening to "Night Drive" is a true delight.

Rogers is a thoughtful songwriter with an excellent ear for the English language. He's more personal and introspective than most songwriters but doesn't hit you with cliches.

This is the first Garnet Rogers CD I've bought. It won't be the last

5 out of 5 stars Great artist!.......2006-03-26

I was recently turned on to the music of Garnet Rogers. Bought this CD first and ended up buying nearly all of his. Not only a great voice and guitar, but some very heart felt stories. I also had the pleasure of seeing him in Harvard Square and found he also had a great sense of humor. Worth listening to..even better live.

5 out of 5 stars Garnet Rogers' Songs Soothe the Soul.......2006-03-17

I had never even heard of this artist before I heard his music on a public radio program called Sounds Eclectic. He is amazing. I've never really been a country or folk music fan, but his music just soothes the soul. I definitely recommend this album to anyone looking for a great alternative to today's barrage of pop and rap!

3 out of 5 stars Probably worth having, but not as good as others.......2006-03-23

This is a good, but not great, Stan Rogers CD. There are some really compelling songs, like Cape St. Mary which, while a bit slow, is heart-rending at the end . There are some catchy songs, like Badger Drive and Two-Bit Cayuse. But there are some rather tedious songs too. All in all, it is worth having if you like Stan Rogers music, but it probably won't be as much a favorite as say, 'Home in Halifax' or 'From Fresh Water'.

4 out of 5 stars Still Stan-ding alone.......2001-04-04

I have been a Stan Rogers fan for almost 20 years and while I enjoy everything he has ever recorded, and miss him terribly, this is not my favorite album by him. However, that said, I think the song "Three Fishers" is one of the most haunting things anyone has ever recorded, and Stan's performance of it (aided by his brother Garret's fine fiddle) is worth of the price of this album. Add it to your list.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite SR album.......1998-06-15

This was the fourth (or fifth?) Stan Rogers album I got, but it's my favorite by far. Three Fishers (with Garnet's haunting fiddle) and Scarborough Settler's Lament (which reminded me of the longings of an English friend) are especially wonderful.

It took two or three listenings to realize that this is really one of Garnet Roger's best - it isn't as 'big' as some of the later ones, but this CD, like 'Speaking softly in the dark' touches something deep and profound and stands frequent listenings. The instrumentals are outstanding, especially Green Eyes - a truly beautiful piece of music. Getting the full meaning of Gypsy takes several listenings, and when you 'get it', it is astounding. John O'Dreams is charming. This isn't the best version of Outside Track - that's the live version on Summer Lightning - and American Jerusalem is pretty overwrought. Btu well worth having.

5 out of 5 stars If I could give 6 stars I would.......2007-01-10

I think this is my favorite GR album (and I own all of them, and all of Stan's as well). By turns bleak, sad, romantic, and even wryly funny, this is the #1 album I put on when I want to be in a safe/solitary musical space. (Joni's "Blue" runs second to this for me when I'm in this mood.)

4 out of 5 stars Lost Night .......2007-04-16

talk about a lost night collection. This is a beauty from back in the days of early soul, late RnB, with plenty of nodding to the Drifters and Sam Cooke, but, really, is there really any need to take a shot at Janis Joplin, who not only had the good taste to revive the forgotten Garnett Mims classic "Cry Baby" but also sang the devil out of it with just as much, if not more, heart and soul as the man himself. God bless both of them.

5 out of 5 stars great CD.......2005-10-09

Garnet Mimms & the Enchanters are great. Sounds alot like old Solomon Burke, same type of songs, but different voice. Great back up singers, similar to the Raylettes or the Ikettes. Every song is a winner. Once yoo hear the original version of Cry Baby, you'll never want to hear the Janis Joplin vesion again.

5 out of 5 stars Best music ever recorded since the big bang.......1998-09-08

Aah yeah ..., how can one mortal soul express desperation, panic, joy and excessive beauty by means of his voice? What mechanism is triggered that singing isn't singing anymore but became sound by itself, coming from somewhere dark, deep and unknown, channeled through the physical body of a man who goes by the name of Garnet Mimms? How is it possible that my girlfriend and me (other race, other continent, other language, other generation) have goosepimples and tears in our eyes every single time we play this CD (about 500 times a year)? Because this CD contains music from the man with the most beautiful voice since the excistence of our galaxy. Cry Baby, One Girl, Wanting You, For Your Precious Love and all the other sacred songs on this peace of art are sung with such incredible intensity that it will leave everybody living or deceased with goosepimples. This CD goes through the barriers of every obstacle known to mankind. Put this on, and you've got SOUL. In my humble opinion, the deepest, the most desperate, the most sincere, the most honest, the most sacred, the soil, the earth, the core feeling that has makes live worth living on this planet. Garnet, thank you.

5 out of 5 stars soul from the golden age.......2005-08-24

Two classic albums back to back with sleeve notes by the late and sadly-missed Dave Godin, whose typically tortured and passionate syntax graces this belated reissue. From the spinetingling 'Cry baby', to the before-its-time metrosexual 'It was easier to hurt her', the latin-tinged mariachi trumpet-laden 'Look Away' and the ripsnorting northern stomper 'Looking for You' - this is a gem of a CD. It reminds us how much Garnett Mimms meant to the early days of Soul, not least in Britain where he toured a couple of times - and how much the less famous early to mid sixties singers achieved for posterity, not to mention writers and arrangers of the calibre of Bert Berns and Jerry Ragovoy. More please!

4 out of 5 stars This should not be forgotten.......1999-04-18

Let's hope that more artists such as Garnett Mimms have their material transferred over to compact disc; it would be a shame for music like this to be lost because their material is not widely enough known to turn a profit for record companies. This compilation covers two releases that speak not only as the individual wonders it contains, but also almost as a musical history of the artist. If you can listen to "As long as I have you" and not get chills, you have no soul. The newly remastered sound is rich and clean throughout. The packaging is kind of drab, but the liner notes are good. What really matters with this release is the material. It could come in a clear plastic bag on a plain cd, and it would still be the most colorful album I own.

4 out of 5 stars uneven but worth it.......2006-09-16

Everyone hearing the current discussion about illegal immigration should spend time seriously listening to "Twisting in the Wind" - a deep and evocative examination of the humiliation and demoralization of people caught in this with words just right - it puts lots into perspective that we need to feel. I can listen to "Waiting" over and over, catching new images, feeling new reactions, alternately crying and soaring - it and "Here Tonight" are truly rare and beautiful songs of great depth, and "So Happy" is a wonderful relief and hope in friendship, even when difficult. However, some of the other songs are less memorable, especially "Shining Thing" which, when I read the words in the liner, seemed quite promising, but is instead repetitive and tiresome - it could have been so much better. "Soul Kiss" also could have very easily been a less pop-radio type song, it is unfortunate he wasted these concepts on something less than they could have been. But - despite that - buy it for the first 4 songs I mentioned - you'll be enriched!

5 out of 5 stars His Best CD Yet.......2005-03-19

This is truly a beautiful album and my favorite. Each time Garnet comes out with a CD he seems to top all the others. Oftentimes, musicians compromise their talents after a few successful albums. Garnet is not one of these. It's evident that he puts a lot of thought into each song - both words & musical composition. I was lucky enough to see him in concert last September when he sang most of the songs on this album. It was a nice surprise to see these songs as part of his new album (which he didn't mention). He's one of the most innovative musicians I've heard. His opening song, "Soul Kiss" ("as opposed to a French kiss," quoting Garnet at the concert) is really about finding your soul mate and sealing your love for each other with a "Soul Kiss". Most musicians have a characteristic style (which is not to say that's bad), but the only style Garnet has is that there is none. Each album/song has its own unique chacteristics. On this album, the opening song uses bongos (in reference to "chestnuts playing bongos on the roof of cars" from the opening line in "Soul Kiss".) His songs run the gamut of anger to tears to laughter (or anything in between) from one song to another. "So Happy" is a beautiful song about missing his good friend Archie Fisher after re-uniting for a tour with him in 2003. Most of his songs are not only poetic but also picturesque. This is most obvious on this album: "I watched the sun fall from the sky, It bathed the sea in amber glow . . . The sea shone gold like whiskey . . . A warm night in a whispering field, The stars were falling from the sky, . . . I watched the moon rise from the hills, The sea was moving fast and slow . . ." (from "Here Tonight"). Garnet has also produced (and accompanied) albums for friends of his: Doug McArthur, Archie Fisher, and Bobby Watt. You can find the album he did with Archie Fisher on Amazon.com under Archie Fisher. Doug McArthur's music you can find at http://www3.sympatico.ca/dougimac/DMWEB.html. Bobby Watt's music you can find at: www.bobbywatt.com.

5 out of 5 stars Good for Night Drives or any other time..........2005-01-06

...after reading some other reviews of Garnet and Stan Rogers' music, I was quickly reminded of a phone conversation I'd had with their mother some years ago. I was working at a radio station in Massachusetts and we'd gotten a copy of "Night Drive." I'd not been able to find it in the Boston area (all 50 copies HMV had went like that!), and the number I had was to their home.

Really nice lady...now, this recording, which I finally did get my hands on a short time later is a great example of Garnet's versatility. There's folk tunes, "Seeds of Hope," with David Tamulevich's backing vocals is a wonderful song, and the cover of Greg Brown's "Jesus and Elvis" is excellent.

A couple of ballsy rock tunes as well, "Never So Lonely," which takes a hard look at domestic violence and "Colliertown" rips the coal industry for a mine disaster.

There's a lot of songs of life in the recordings, and they are simple and direct. The 10+ minute title track ends the album beautifully.

I listen to this fairly often, and I always take it when I'm on the road, "Night Drive" or not.

5 out of 5 stars Mimms, Ragovoy and Berns Knew How To Do The Best Music.......2002-08-15

With the production of Jerry Ragovoy, Garnet Mimms recorded several intense and emotional masterpieces of R&B/soul music.

Bert Berns and Jerry Ragovoy were responsible for the arrangements and also songwriting for the most of these songs.

Cry Baby is a remarkable recording (later covered by Janis Joplin), some other gems are: It Was Easier To Hurt Her (covered by Dusty Springfield and by Wayne Fontana), One Girl (covered by Mark Wynter), A Little Bit Of Soap (covered by The Exciters and by british singer Jimmy Justice), Look Away, Welcome Home (recorded by Dusty Springfield for her album "Where am I Going?"), Baby Don't You Weep, Anytime You Want Me, Prove It To Me, Looking For You.
In Short : if you enjoy very good R&B/soul music, this CD collecting the best of Garnet Mimms recordings is a must-have for you.
