About the Artist
Have You Ever Experienced The Perfect Noise?

From it's beginnings of post-grunge characterized by dissonance, crunch, jangle, and an overwhelming wall of sound–amos moses has steadily evolved its vibration into something not merely innovative, but also accessible and palatable.

In a career spanning nearly nine years and four recordings, the band's musical artistry has resided in its ability to create radiant melodies within seemingly instrumental abrasiveness. amos moses successfully weds the energy and spirit of punk rock to the passion of historical and reformative rock and roll.

The genesis of the group's distinct sound can be traced to the likes of Neil Young, Big Star, and the Rolling Stones. Unique vocals, artistically organic guitars, and Watts-like drums combine to expose the energy and emotion of their unmatchable resonance.

amos moses will continue to make and play music because they love what they do and they embrace progression. Their songs will continue to be inventive and sincere. 2000 will introduce the new vital album "Cardinal" and a strengthened and ignited band. Really, there's no grand strategy.

Product Description
A vital collection of radiant pop/punk melodies that should be spilling from every stereo in the free world. These songs are accessibly genuine and sincere all while fusing hooks with abrasion.

Set in dark, slickened streets and populated by a stellar ensemble cast, this adaptation of Frank Miller's hard-edged, film noir inspired graphic novels plays like comic-book-come-to-life—not surprising, as Miller is credited as Robert Rodriguez's co-director (with a bit of help from Quentin Tarantino). The soundtrack to this bleak, compelling exercise in pure noir stylism is provided mostly by director Rodriguez, with an occasional assist from past collaborators John Debney (Spy Kids and its sequel) and Graeme Revell (From Dusk Til Dawn). While their largely synth-driven cues tend naturally towards brooding atmospheric soundscapes, their tense electro-rhythms are seasoned with bracing doses of sinewy, sensual sax and dotted with the occasional bongo flourish, details that musically evoke both a shadowy humanity and the film's genre-savvy roots. Also featuring disparate, yet wholly integrated contributions from techno-house savants Fluke (the hypnotic "Absurd") and 20th century Mexican classicist Silvestre Revueltas, it's the sinister flipside to the future-jazz sheen of Vangelis' classic Blade Runner.--Jerry McCulley

i listened to the servant song and i know everyone said its pretty well known that that is the song they used in the trailer, but if you listen to "broken chairs" by built to spill it really sounds like parts of the trailer music too. and its also a good song. so i would recommend trying that as well!

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2006-01-17

Now, i loved the movie, but the soundtrack blew me away! all the songs fit the movie perfectly. However, it is missing the instrumental version of "Cells" by the Servants, which plays on the DVD title menu
so, here you go:

Is a very good soundtrack because i think that Robert Rodriguez has made a great choice with the composers and his own musical composition

While the previous reviwer was correct that Cells the trailer song is not on the soundtrack, Servant did indeed create an instrumental version and you can obtain it at this link follow the instructions it is at the Servant website so its legal and its for a limited time only!

4 out of 5 stars An addendum to "FangsFirst" comment.......2005-09-16

FangsFirst is absoluty correct -- trailer music is almost never on the movie's soundtrack. An interesting additional bit of trivia, however; almost all trailer themes ARE from a movie soundtrack, just from a DIFFERENT movie than the one the trailer is for!

So if you're looking for "Cells" by The Servant (the song from the Sin City trailer), take a look at the soundtrack to Transporter 2. You'll find it along with another song by The Servant. "Cells" does have lyrics to it (which aren't on the Sin City trailer), but it's still a damned good song.

Just thought I'd share that with everybody.

5 out of 5 stars YOUNG HANDEL'S GENIUS WRIT LARGE.......2007-01-30

Handel arrived in Italy in 1706 at the age of 21 and stayed for four years. During that time he wrote nearly 100 cantatas for his noble Italian patrons in Venice, Florence, Rome, and Naples.

This CD is the first in a series by Glossa that will record all the Italian cantatas with instrumental accompaninent (around 30 cantatas total).

Let me say straight away that this is a deeply satisfying -- even *magical* -- recording. Handelians will know that the music of his Italian years has an incomparable freshness and charm, yet it still has a depth that assures us of Handel's genius at even this early age.

Most Handelians will already own other recordings of the two most popular works here, "Tra le fiamme" and "Il Delirio Amoroso." I have an excellent recording by Maria Bayo (on the Naive label) of the former, and by Ann Murray (on Coro) of the latter.

But soprano Roberta Invernizzi is their equal, and the ten-member Italian group La Risonanza support her most beautifully -- nay, ravishingly. And even if duplication is involved, this CD is most desirable for its inclusion of two quite rare cantatas: "Figlio d'alte speranze" and the brief, four-movement, but most exquisite gem "Pensieri notturni de filli," which is scored only for soprano, flute, and basso continuo.

Invernizzi sings with more drama and awareness of text than Natalie Dessay on her recent CD with Haim, and with less strain than Kozena, who is harried unduly by Minkowski (not a true Handelian) on her cantata recording. The band plays with a most pleasing naturalness, always alert but never exaggerating tempo or gesture -- a model of taste and discretion.

The CD presentation is attractive -- like all Glossa productions -- and includes informative notes by Ellen T. Harris.

The demonstration-worthy recording allows young Handel's genius to shine through in every movement. Based on this first installment, I can hardly believe that another half-dozen or so CDs (based on four cantatas per disc) still await. Talk about a treasure trove!

Everything about this CD is great. Roberta Invernizzi's voice soars. The musicians and the conducting is top notch and the sound quality is incredible. It sounds as though you're in the room as it is being recorded. I'm a devoted Handel fan and if you are, or if you enjoy Baroque music, you must have this CD!

Album Description

The best way to explain what this band sounds like is that they are a combination of REM, Hootie and the Blowfish and Dave Matthews with a smidgen of the Allman Bros. for good measure.

This band has a melodic foundation with a marvelous pop sensibility; they are intelligent, crafty, and very talented at every position in the band. Get ready folks, the south is gonna do it again. They have all the cardinal traits of greatness and I hope you as the listener are curious enough to check them out.

These guys really are at the absolute top of the commercial radio pop-rock pile, as good as Collapsis, Athenaeum, and Transmatic. I don't know how these guys haven't got a major label deal, because they're totally better than 95% of major label rock, and every song on this album has hit written all over it.

5 out of 5 stars An Accidental Masterpiece.......2007-04-20

I agree with the reviewer who wrote "this CD has fascinated me for over a decade." I know when I first heard it I was confounded: how could such diverse tracks as "Big Mink" and "Tough Guy Tactics" be on the same disc? No matter how many times I play it, it's always great to hear Eric's trumpet solo emerge from the smoldering, melancholy "If You Believe in Christmas Trees." The songs sometimes have wild changes, but the pieces fit somehow. Unexpected trumpet fluorishes appear out of nowhere. It's lyrically challenging, too. At times it seems that every *other* line has poetic meaning. All kidding aside, though, this is something rare...a musical collage of the highest order.

5 out of 5 stars All time pop classic.......2005-08-06

Call it what you will, chamber or baroque pop, but in my estimation there is simply nothing quite like Cardinal. This CD has fascinated me for over a decade, an impenetrable, but wholly human concoction by two very different musical minds. The 10 songs that comprised the original release sound as amazing as ever here, and the addition of the bonus material is a real plus. They offer a look into the development of the spound that would become Cardinal forvever. A pleasant surprise is a bare bones version of Love's Willow Willow, and the tracks from the hideously rare debut 45 Toy Bell are a complete breath of fresh air to this listener. The insert includes recent interviews with Richard Davies and Eric Matthews, which shed light on the Cardinal story, without dimming the mystery. Heartily recommeded, your ears will thank you.

      4 out of 5 stars A Timely Reissue.......2005-06-22

I have to agree with the first reviewer - at a point in time when music seems to be getting a little jaded again (who needs another Maroon 5 record?) this great album receives an update and expanded reissue. The 11 extra tracks range from sublime to the ...sublime. I can't fault a track on there, just a pity the reissue doesnt include every single track the pair ever recorded (missing a couple of tracks from the TOY BELL ep). I live in Derby and also bought the Wonderland edition - it's one of the best packages I've seen this year, a real fan's delight (...). If you already have this, buy again, you wont be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars CARDINAL IS MORE!.......2005-06-22

a remastered and remixed reissue of Cardinal PLUS 11 extra tracks!!! An incredible album from Richard Davies and Eric Matthews from 1994 just got a whole lot better. There are 2 issues, one in the US and one in Europe. I got a copy of the European edition and it's incredibly packaged. Miniature gatefold sleeve (like an old lp) with booklet and wallet, hand-numbered too, wow! Wonderland Records issue, I recommend it wholeheartedly, worth the extra bucks.

5 out of 5 stars fresh voice, classy style on the classics.......2007-04-24

Not only is Ms. French's voice crisp, clear, and lovely; the accompanying band and the arrangements to the songs are over the top. 'If I spoke French' is a song that I could listen to over and over. Her tribute to the members of her 4-piece band in 'Boyfriends' is a cute toe-tapping song. I agree that even the songs one has heard over and over are given a 'facelift' and seem new again. Definitely a nice combination of songs that one can sit back and relax with, or stand up and dance! My kind of collection.

5 out of 5 stars Julia's Great In Any Language!.......2006-03-05

Julia Rich is one of those rare female vocalists that can sing a song you've heard dozens (if not hundreds) of times before, and flat out make it her own! On IF I SPOKE FRENCH, her uncanny ability to take some great old standards like "What A Difference A Day Made", "I Know Why" and (believe it or not) "The Tennessee Waltz" and make them sound down right refreshing, is nothing short of genius. Of course Julia has been honing her songbird skills in front of SRO audiences for a few seasons now as the Glenn Miller Orchestra's leading lady. Believe me, when you hear her version of "Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead", you'll wonder how such a dastardly deed could bring a smile to your face. IF I SPOKE FRENCH also includes a number of Rich originals which deserve wider exposure. In addition to the title tune, "My First Love" and "Matching Rings" are Julia tales sung simply and grand. It doesn't matter what language you speak, Julia Rich's IF I SPOKE FRENCH is universally recommended!

5 out of 5 stars I just love her music.......2005-06-13

I've purchased every one of Julia's CD's, mostly from the Glenn Miller Web site. I just love her music. She has a fresh new voice and her disks contain a good mix of music. I highly recommend purchasing this and all the rest of her disks if you like vocal jazz.

      Album Description

Pianist/composer Jean-Michel Pilc is a resolute, constantly evolving artist. His second Dreyfus Jazz release, "Cardinal Points," features original music that defies classification—it's a startling musical roller coaster brimming with eclectic intensity and heartfelt emotion. In contrast to his last album "Welcome Home," which featured astonishing reworkings of the standard jazz repertoire, "Cardinal Points" consists mostly of Pilc's original compositions. The seven new song-length pieces on Cardinal Points explore a multitude of uncharted musical landscapes. The expanded instrumentation of soprano saxophone, percussion and electric bass further punctuate the compositions' soaring melodies, deep grooves, and thrilling dynamics. From the climatic intensity of South, which begins in a sea of calm and soon builds to dramatic summits, to the playful exuberance of Fred's Walk, Pilc manages to push the envelope in a tasteful, listenable, and often humorous way. ! Cardinal Points is a bold statement that affirms the artistry of this remarkable creator. Besides his own writing, Pilc chose to include a particularly idiosyncratic arrangement of Mood Indigo. "I take a wave of inspiration that I draw from the original tune," he explains, "and I make it materialize in sound - in vibration." As is the case with many of his interpretations, the result here is remarkably different from the original composition. Trio Sonata, a four-part work of enormous substance, was created with a grant from Chamber Music America.

Personnel: Jean-Michel Pilc - piano/whistle/melodica/percussions Sam Newsome - soprano sax James Genus - acoustic & electric bass François Moutin - acoustic bass Ari Hoenig - drums Abdou M'Boup - percussion

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Outdoes his last effort (quite a feat).......2003-09-25

What has Jean-Michel Pilc learned in the year and a half since his spectacular initial release, Welcome Home?

      A lot.

He's learned how to play less notes without sacrificing his monster chops. He's learned to find ideal, entirely sympathetic bandmates (Ari Hoenig, drums; James Genus, bass; and the greatly underrated Sam Newsom, soprano sax). He's learned that mood, space, and voicing are every bit as important in creating and playing effective jazz as speed.

This disc has much more of a world-jazz feel than Welcome Home, with tinges of Oriental ("East") Latin ("South) Nordic ("North") and Left Coast hip ("West") filtering through. There's even a Reggae tune "Fred's Walk." There's still plenty of virtuosity--check out the high-wire act of "Ari's Mode" as well as, esp., Part I of "Trio Sonata." It's just that there's also a lot more maturity and much closer attention paid to creating effective soundscapes. The result is a disc that in some ways is even more remarkable than its predecessor.

The incorporation of a broader musical canvas helps move things to the next level. Especially noteworthy is the playing of Sam Newsome, who has an absolutely unique and instantly recognizable sound on soprano sax. The inclusion of percussionist Abdou M'Boup on four cuts adds exotic flavor and coloration. Pilc also shows himself to be a composer to reckon with. The title track, with its attractive head and tricky/sinuous piano-sax unison lines proves to be a perfect vehicle for some startling Pilc solo flights of fancy (including a teasingly brief quote of "Eleanor Rigby") and Sam Newsome's finest solo on record. James Genus's acoustic bass solo (he mainly plays e-bass here, and I for one would like to hear more of him on acoustic) is also quite something, as is Ari Hoenig's drum solo that merges into a driving percussion passage from M'Boup.

With this remarkable disc, Pilc proves he's anything but a one-hit wonder. Already a major piano voice, he should over the next few years come to be regarded among the very top echelon of jazz players and composers.

If you like standards and ballads, you can't find a better storyteller. Ms. Rich can live a song's story, and her velvet voice makes that story such a pleasure to hear. She is wonderful with the familiar old songs, but her original work is pure gold. Later cd's include even more of her own work. I recommend that you buy it and kick back for some pure listening pleasure.
