Twenty years after their debut album introduced a well-read duo with a peculiar wit and a gift for contagious melodies, They Might Be Giants--a.k.a. John Linnell and John Flansburgh--still come across as exhilarating and spanking fresh as the theme song to Comedy Central's Daily Show. (Oh yeah, that's them, too.) Fresh off the Giants' second children's record (2005's Here Come the ABCs), the New York twosome began a production alliance with L.A.'s Dust Brothers that resulted in The Else, another collection that ranks with any in their memorable discography. From the fast-tempo opener "I'm Impressed" through the '60s pop edge of "The Mesopotamians," endearing hooks reel you in just far enough for the humorous, often oddball lyrics to bury you. But several times the implications in the lyrics are all too real, such as the love undertones of "Contrecoup" and "Take Out the Trash," an uncannily catchy dump-your-boyfriend song that suggests "Once you get him out, tell him not to come back again." Contradictions like these never bother to disrupt the sequencing, but rather drive home what we already know about They Might Be Giants: they already are. --Scott Holter

5 out of 5 stars TMBG delivers big on album 12..........2007-07-31

Has it really been 12 albums already? Where does the time go? This set of songs would be perfectly at home between Apollo 18 and John Henry. Not every song is what I'd call a Home Run, but the over all compilation is just right. After doing so much kiddie stuff and obscure podcast style short songs, it's nice to have a real album again. If you liked the sound of TMBG in the late 80's and early 90's you won't be disappointed with this album.

4 out of 5 stars Buy it for the bonus disc!.......2007-07-27

Two discs grace this collection; one is entitled "Cast Your Pod To The Wind". This disc is full of the creativity, spontaneity, humor, and pioneering experimental spirit that has made They Might Be Giants a truly great band. Catchy, weird songs. Unusual rhythms. Penny-whistle solos, ukulele, tuba, strange electronics, wild vocal techniques, and even *gasp* ACCORDION are just a few of the myriad sonic surprises that lay in wait for your ears.

It also comes with a disc entitled "The Else." This disc is surprisingly unremarkable. Perhaps its conventionalism will make it more accessable to fans of mainstream radio, I don't know. Although I will make one remark: Have you ever sketched, written, or recorded a great idea, but then worked hard trying to improve and refine it, only to find the polished, finished product had lost the vitality of the original? Yeah... I think that must be what happened with the material written for "The Else". Over-produced to the point of being... well... let's say it does not hold one's attention.

The initial appeal of TMBG was that they DID NOT sound like every other corporate rock entity. So what happened? It seems they want to "play it safe" these days for the official album tracks, only daring to exert their true genius in the dark recesses of podcasts, b-sides and bonus discs.

In summation: Buy it for the bonus disc while it's still available! That alone is worth a four-star rating. Console yourself that no, TMBG haven't "lost it"; rather, they seem to "hide it" these days.

4 out of 5 stars Everyone's entitled to their opinion .......2007-07-25

But I have to disagree with the reviewer who labelled this "the worst kind of synth-pop." Yes, there are a few songs that use the dreaded drum machine, but at least half of the songs (or more) use good old-fashioned live drums and rockin' guitars. I absolutely love "the Cap'm", even with its silly (but witty) lyrics, the tune for this song is just great. Like many TMBG releases, not every song is a keeper, but I'd have to say this is their best hit-to-miss ratio in quite a while (I was not particularly a fan of Mink Car or the Spine). And as many reviewers have also noted, the extensive bonus disc of podcast songs (included in the first edition of this album) more than makes up for it if you are not totally into the actual CD. I think TMBG has many many good years left in them and even if they never again match the brilliance of "Flood" (I consider Birdhouse one of the most immaculate songs ever written), I am glad to support a band which does not dumb down their songs, which is not afraid to try new things, and which has never "sold out" just to have a "radio hit". Plus, if you ever have a chance, they are outstanding live musicians and their shows are usually hilarious and infectious. TMBG forever!

5 out of 5 stars I'm Impressed.......2007-07-24

Great toe tappin' fun. I never understood why people can be so harsh on TMBG. They're goofy. Keep that in mind, and it's all good.

This is the first album since Apollo 18 that I've taken to instantly on the first listening.

Plus, there are some very good songs on the bonus podcast CD...the best being Brain Problem Situation.

1 out of 5 stars Sadly, the worst TMBG has done........2007-07-20

I eagerly awaited the newest TMBG album, and it seemed to be a sign of good omen that it was released in my birthday. However, after listening to the album, I can safely say that I've never heard a *worse* TMBG release.

From start to finish it is the worst kind of synth-pop; if you ever wanted your They Might Be Giants to be more hip-hop and less... oh, interesting, then this is your Great Big Chance.

It's one of the few albums I've purchased that actively *angered* me. I felt my blood pressure rising after each track, offended that this was the band that brought me the sublime "She's an Angel", the stellar "Subliminal", and the super "Sapphire Bullets of Pure Love." Okay, that's enough alliteration for one review.

What happened? What happened with this one, TMBG? Again, I stress; if you are big into hip-hop/drum n' bass, you might like this. If you enjoy Flood, State Songs (side-project, but still worthy of the catalog), John Henry, or heck, even Mink Car, give this one a pass. I even cancelled my tickets to see The Else tour in Cleveland this album was so bad!

In fairness, there are a couple of songs that are passable;
Bee of the Bird of the Moth and Contrcoup are listenable, and The Mesopotamians retains a spark of previous TMBG cleverness.

Sorry to rain on the parade, but it's back to the uneven Spine, which looks like Lincoln compared to the miserable The Else.

In recent years, Mary Chapin Carpenter--once among the most promising stars of the folkie infiltration of Nashville ("Down at the Twist and Shout," "I Feel Lucky")--abandoned all desire to dot the country music charts. Free of that ill-fitting yoke she returned to being what she really was all along: A literate acoustic singer-songwriter. In 2004, she released a tour de force, Between Here and Gone, which combined affecting social commentary on the events of 9/11 with personal meditations on her changed life as a married woman living in rural Virginia. The Calling picks up where that album left off, using the same co-producer, pianist Matt Rollings, and core musicians, including John Jennings, who helped Carpenter shape her sonic landscape some 20 years ago. If the new album goes farther in advocating a political conscience--"On with the Song" takes jabs at the jingoistic rubes who dissed the Dixie Chicks, while "Why Shouldn't We" insists we'll have worthy heroes in office again one day--it largely invokes the same quiet, warm, and conversational tone as its predecessor. On the whisper-soft "Twilight," which frames a perfect, peaceful evening with a nearly spiritual grace, a listener might easily imagine himself chatting with the artist about long-held secrets and shared experiences, the Blue Ridge Mountains looming in the background. That is part of Carpenter's gift--connecting with her audience's shadow self, using her deeply nuanced alto to fill even the simplest words with profound knowing. As a pure craftsman, however, she ranks with the giants of past generations in capturing the small, bruised hearts seemingly lost in the chaos of a catastrophic event. "Houston," one such song here, recalls Woody Guthrie's great "Deportee" in its power and the pathos of the Hurricane Katrina victims who were forced to evacuate their homes, leaving everything behind but fear and hope. "Mama's got her baby/Sleeping in a grocery cart," it begins, at once setting up a picture of wrenching desperation. Carpenter, no stranger to blue moods herself, knows how tough it is to emerge from a dark period of pained restlessness to find one's very self again. The album's soothing closer, "Bright Morning Star," like much of the record as a whole, offers a beacon of light and safe harbor for those shipwrecked on life's rocky shores. --Alanna Nash

Album Description

As a songwriter and performer, Mary Chapin Carpenter has long since transcended the traditional notions of genre and style, finding widespread acclaim for her poetic, elegantly - observed compositions. The Calling, her first release for Zoë/Rounder, is the most topical album she's made in her twenty-year career. While it unequivocally addresses issues both public and political - from the after-effects of Hurricane Katrina to religious zealotry to the trial-by-radio of the Dixie Chicks -- there is also something deeply personal about this extraordinary collection of songs. The album is a powerful, provocative meditation on the mysteries of fate and circumstance, which mingles timeless questions with contemporary issues. Introspective, defiant and deeply resonant, The Calling is a profound set from one of modern songwriting's most distinctive voices.

Featuring "It Must Have Happened," "We're All Right," and "On with the Song."

This is one of MCC's best CDs. Her writing is heart wrenching on some songs & uplifting on others. Her lyrics are so honest and eloquent. I think she's one of the greatest songwriters of her generation. And her voice, though lower, is terrific.

Album Description

Though best known as an actress, Minnie Driver defied critics' expectations and established herself as a serious artist and musician with her well-received debut album Everything I've Got in My Pocket. Her new CD SEASTORIES goes farther in exploring new musical territory, from the rich sonic textures of "Beloved" to the bluesy soul of "Cold Dark River" to the seductive minor key groove of "Mockingbird" to the poetic chamber folk of "Lakewater Hair." Producer Marc "Doc" Dauer and guest musicians Ryan Adams and The Cardinals, Liz Phair and Rami Jaffee (The Wallfowers) match but never overwhelm Driver's vivid lyrics, soaring melodies and spirited performances on this thoroughly pleasing collection of intelligent pop.

"Blasting holes in the actor-singer stigma...Minnie Driver isn't like most actors who treat making records as a hobby. She's actually good." - HARP

5 out of 5 stars Is This One A Grammy? In My Heart It Is!!!.......2007-07-25

I loved Minnie Driver's first cd-"Everything I've Got In My Pocket" and this cd: "Seastories" is just as good or even better! I love her smooth haunting vocals and I can't help but feel a slight sadness and yet hopeful undertone while I listen to this. I felt many emotions draw me in, the minute I started to play it. I enjoy all the songs on this cd, but my favorite stand out tracks are: "Stars & Satellites", "Beloved"(my very favorite) and "Mockingbird". What a perfect time of year to release this fresh and exciting new album by Minnie. I believe she will get award recognition for this and if not- she definitely gets an award from my heart and soul, everytime I listen to this. You know the feeling you get when you have a conversation with a close friend you have not heard in a while, that's the feeling I get when I hear her sing....like a comfortable close friend.

5 out of 5 stars Very, very, very good........2007-07-21

I saw her perform this the night the CD was released. It was in a really small bar with a ridiculously small stage. Her band could barely fit on it. Anyway, every song she sang I was hearing for the first time. I knew she could sing but was pleasantly surprised at what I heard from this band. I wondered what the CD would sound like and it is wonderful. A previous reviewer mentioned the first five songs and that is spot on. There's great fare in the vein of Chrissie Hynde, Fleetwood Mac, and even The Band. Here's a suggestion: preview Seastories for free via Rhapsody's service and listen to it through a pair of good headphones. Beautiful music that touches the spirit.

(Addendum)
I've now listened to the CD about 20 times and I'm just thrilled. I previously talked about the first five songs but the sixth song How To Be Good has become my favorite. Beloved is damn close to being the perfect single too. This is one hell of a CD.

Minnie, let me be the first to congratulate you on what should be a well deserved Grammy nod.

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly stunning.......2007-07-19

After having enjoyed her in several diverse film and TV projects, the most recent one being The Riches, I have really come to respect Minnie Driver as a versatile actress. I had no idea however that she was a musician with 2 CDs out too, and I was blown away when I started to listen to Seastories. I was immediately hooked. She has a bittersweet style that is gentle, melancholic, and completely real and grounded (a surprise for a big actress). I've been listening to the CD for the last couple of days and can't get some of the songs out of my head. They are like ear candy--pleasantly melodic with an emotional presence that hits the spot perfectly. I can't believe that this album--with its folksy/dream pop/atmospheric sound and slight country tinge at times--was made by a British actress! But thanks to its authenticity and accessibility, my disbelief quickly faded and I became enchanted with Minnie's beautiful style.

5 out of 5 stars A Star Indeed!.......2007-07-18

I can only echo another reviewer and say that Driver is IT. However, where I liked much of her first album, despite it's atmospheric slowness (I wished it had rocked a little more, had more variety), with this one, she's stolen my heart. The opening title just engaged me right away, and from there, through the next five songs, it never let up. The seventh and eighth tracks I will have warm up to, but then she hit me with "London Skies" and through to the end, a sort of brief bow called "Love Is Love," I AM in love. Her singing is strong and assured, her songwriting equal to any, in the huge crop of good singer/songwriters working today, and there's lots of thrilling stuff going on behind her, especially the bass work by Chris Feinstein and Al Wolovich on some, and Ed Heywood's pedal steel on "How To Be Good," and the gorgeous ballad that is the climax of this album, "Coming Back To Life." There are nice touches by Liz Phair and others, but this is Driver's moment; the "entire package" includes some nice photos, an added bonus to a CD that will be staying in my changer for a while. Excellent.

4 out of 5 stars SeaStories brings it "too the shores".......2007-07-17

Let Me be the 1st too say..where "evrything i got in my pocket" was a wonderful cd like a ship a-float on the ocean..and her vocals like a breeze of silk..this cd brings it too the shores..no sophmore slump here!! and she puts to rest along standing comment.."actors can't sing/singers can't act">>she is the FULL package! also a wonderful song-writer!..i have listened to this disc 3 times already today, and only got it a few hours ago!.."sorry baby" is a fun up-tempo track..and "beloved" is wonderful!..it's the perfect, what i call "sunday-record"..put on the coffee, read the paper, and just relax and listen!...the only reason i gave it 4-stars is, that for me i just wanted it NOT too end..so really (it's a 5)..i could go on..but then you wouldn't have time to really enjoy the magic (of what i HOPE the record companies keep around)of Minnie Driver!...Peace..may your ears stay happy Bill McClenthan

The Cowboy Junkies' gothic Americana takes a psychedelic hue on At the End of Paths Taken, replete with Beatlesque string sections and snarling, distorted guitar leads. It's an often epic album, exemplified by the opening track, "Brand New World," which starts off like a lament and ends with a triumph of surging strings. Atop it all sits singer Margo Timmins. She's the lover everyone wants, a voice that is at once world-weary and inviting, domineering and seductive. She's the perfect vehicle for writer and brother Michael Timmins--especially on an album that deals with adult themes--because if nothing else, Margo sounds like an adult, a woman who has experienced the world and life and things that maybe we shouldn't talk about. A mother's frustration never sounded as ominous and threatening as on "Cutting Board Blues." Sitting astride a buzzsaw guitar riff and a groove of doom, she talks about walking away from it all, leaving her cutting board behind. Many of the themes concern adulthood and children with a sense of despair about the world those children are entering on songs like "My Little Basquiat." There are moments of light and hope on At the End of Paths Taken, but overall it is a deliriously dark and brooding album. --John Diliberto

Album Description

Despite its title, the new Cowboy Junkies album, At the End of Paths Taken, is as much about new beginnings as it is about endings. It is also about human connections, the struggle to sustain those connections over time, and the complexities that can arise even when those connections are maintained. It is, in other words, a classic Cowboy Junkies album - a suite of smart, richly textured songs that value subtlety over broad, generic strokes, songs that prize insight and casual revelations over easily digestible clichés. Family lies at the heart of the album's eleven songs, and, of course, that is appropriate, too. Three of the band's members - singer Margo Timmins; songwriter, producer and guitarist Michael Timmins; and drummer Peter Timmins - are siblings, and bassist Alan Anton has been a member since the group formed in Toronto in 1985. Few bands have lasted nearly as long with their original line-up intact, and fewer still have created as consistently satisfying a body of work.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Junkies Just Improve With Age.......2007-06-21

How anyone could rate this less than five stars is completely beyond me. I have followed the Junkies since their second album, and really got into them with an assigned review of 'Lay It Down', which I still consider a masterpiece. But this recording is something else entirely. I've lived with it now for quite awhile (I think I had it about a month before official release, so add that time to the date of this 'review'), and I'm still awed by its strength in all directions. The writing is superb, Michael's guitar work gets better and better as time goes on, Margo's voice sounds more tuned and better than it did twenty something years ago with 'Whites Off Earth Now', and the arrangements (including strings) are simply amazing. Try listening to 'Brand New World' (the first track), and see if you don't feel optomistic about the world today. By the time the closing track, 'My Only Guarantee' finishes, it's clear that you've reached the end of THIS path taken, but I can't wait to hear where they will go next. I stand up and applaud this grand achievement of the Junkies, quite possibly the finest recording of their long career and one I will treasure for years to come. Now if they would only issue it on vinyl too...

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-05-02

I've just listened to this once, so there's probably so much more that I didn't catch yet. But what a fantastic, gorgeous, and enthralling album. This is the Junks 11th studio release - and it's the same band from when they began more than 20 years ago. But this is not the same sound sonically. Michael's guitar playing and approach continues to mature and grow (listen to Cutting Board Blues). Margo's voice has never sounded better, IMO - it's like a fine wine aging to perfection. Peter is here, along with long-time guests Jaro Czerwinec and Jeff Bird. Alan's trademark bass is very under-stated on most of the tracks, though. But the big difference is the presence of strings on nearly all of the songs. It's a great fit with Margo's voice and the tone of the album, which is very oriented towards family. There's a children's choir on the ending song, along with a recording of Father Timmins (which makes up the under-lying element of Mountain).

Highlights of the album are Cutting Board Blues, My Little Basquiat, Follower 2, and It Doesn't Really Matter. The album reminds me of Open in some ways - a big departure in sound from their previous albums. I'd rank it up there with One Soul Now, which is my favourite album of theirs in the last decade (Caution Horses remains my personal favourite).

Buy the album - and don't forget to see the band live if they're coming to your neck of the woods (unfortunately no Texas dates yet - drat).

4 out of 5 stars What a great CD..........2007-04-21

I am a longtime Cowboy Junkies fan. Their sound has taken various twists and turns over their various releases, but overall they still find a way to keep their "signature" sound within each release. "At The End of Paths Taken" is yet another example. They still sound like the Junkies, but again, they have found a way to incorporate something different and new in this release. I love it. The mellowness, the moodiness, the creativity, the complexity. I think it's one of their best. There's something that just grabs you in from the first song, and makes you want to keep listening until the last. It's easy to get lost in this CD. Thanks for more great music, CJ's!

4 out of 5 stars Same Talent, Different Direction.......2007-04-21

This album is very different from the work the Cowboy Junkies did in the nineties and late eighties (I haven't listened to the 2004 One Soul Now, so I'm not sure how it compares). Their characteristic harmonica has taken a vacation, and drums have a much larger role along with several additional instruments (many that I can't even correctly identify). Further, the music is more complex, layered and psychedelic than in their 80's and 90's albums. Finally, their themes have changed, and instead of being about heartbreak, violence and despair and they are now about "family" (using Margo's term).

I have noticed these same changes in other artists' music as they have matured. In most cases, I have found these developments disappointing (Sting, Annie Lennox, Tori Amos, Peter Gabriel) as it seems like the angst and edge that originally drove these artists' creativity later gave way too something over-worked, something more science than art, something more benignly pleasant than engaging. In this case, however, I am not disappointed for the most part. Margo's hauntingly beautiful voice is still entrancing (although its changed a little too). The family themes are real rather than overly sentimental. The Cowboys still have some edge, as shown in Cutting Board Blues. And there's still some of that forlorn feeling of their earlier work in Spiral Down. It Doesn't Really Matter Anyway has a little of each and is a great song. Someday Soon didn't work for me at all, but maybe its just a matter of taste. Also, even though Mountain could be a great song, I don't like the rambling male voice in the background, its too distracting. And I wasn't hip on the kids' voices in My Only Guarantee, even though it would also be an otherwise great song. (Maybe these two songs waded into the "over worked" category just a bit).

Ultimately, while there are selected albums out there that I like better than any of the Cowboy Junkies albums that I have, I think the Cowboy Junkies could easily be characterized as consistently being the best band of the last three decades. They deserve more recognition than they have received in the U.S, but perhaps a lack of commercial success in the U.S. is part of what has kept them so great over the years. Also, Cowboy Junkies, if you read this - thank you for coming to Idaho to play. I never thought I'd get a chance to see you live and it was wonderful.

British actress Minnie Driver's debut album is a more than credible affair--and a far cry from the usual travesty that unfolds with thespians who pine to be rock stars--outdistancing efforts by brethren like Don Johnson, Russell Crowe, and more recently Juliette Lewis. But then Driver was well on her way to becoming a recording artist as a member of the Puffs, Rock and Brown, but was sidetracked when she scored the starring role in 1995's Circle of Friends. If this CD is any indication, she should have rethought her priorities. Driver's voice is a wistful and stylish hybrid of a rather morose and breathy Kathleen Edwards and a more austere Sheryl Crow, raiding her own rather colorful autobiography for material, giving fans a chance to pick apart her rather melancholy lyrics to decipher which one of her famous beaus--like Matt Damon, Harrison Ford, Josh Brolin, or John Cusack--inspired them. Driver convinced members of the Wallflowers and Pete Yorn (whose brother is her agent) to play join her in the studio, giving her music a deft authentic gloss that might not have surfaced had she just used nameless studio pros. As a result Driver's music is languid and sensual dream pop, verging on alt country, but never making it over that rickety wooden fence. --Jaan Uhelszki

Album Description

The delete bins of history are littered with the recording attempts of actors who fancy themselves as singers. In the case of Minnie Driver, music actually came first. She began singing in London's jazz clubs as a teenager, eventually joining a band that landed a deal with Island Records. She was in the midst of negotiating a solo deal with EMI when the hit film Circle of Friends came along and changed her life. But she always longed to return to music, and with the release of Everything I've Got in My Pocket, Driver has made the album she's been dreaming of making since her teenage years. Backed by a group that includes members of the Wallflowers and Pete Yorn's band, the album deftly blends Driver's sultry, bittersweet vocals with sparse, atmospheric pop and a hint of contemporary folk. With ten original songs and an unforgettable cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Hungry Heart," Driver's debut marks the arrival of an accomplished singer-songwriter.

4 out of 5 stars Very mellow soothing sexy CD.......2007-06-01

Minnie Driver, what can you say...

Very good actress, believable in romance, funny in comedy, spellbinding in her current project " The Riches", is here a self examining songwriter, and once again a very good one. As a bonus (or due to not enough original tracks to fill out a CD) there is a heart wrenching version of Sprinsteen's "Hungry Heart" that is also quite memorable.
Her voice is a sexy, soft, raspy and breathy, no power balads here, and no iratating vocal runs. It gives it a refreshingly honest feel, like it is meant for just you.

If you are looking for something fairly fresh and mellow, (performed by a grown up beautiful woman) you will not be dissapointed with this buy!

4 out of 5 stars Everything I've got in my pocket.......2007-05-16

A pretty good CD. I really enjoy the title song as well as a few others, but I was not impressed with some songs including the bruce springsteen remake. I would recommend it for the listener trying to find a voice that is enchanting and different than what is currently available in music today

4 out of 5 stars Praise to Ms. Driver.......2006-09-07

Wow! I did not expect much from this album but that just goes to show you should not judge a CD by its cover (or in in this case by its actress/songstress). Minnie Driver has a hauntingly beautiful voice that is reminiscent of Sarah McLachan. I love every song on this album including Ms. Driver's remake of "Hungry Heart." The song that drew me in however is number 6's "Deeper Water." I was sunk with the first note. *smile*

I truly hope Ms. Driver will follow this album with another. It will be a great loss to us if she does not.

4 out of 5 stars if you like tori amos you will like minnie.......2006-03-22

this is the second time I bought this album. I lost the original in a house fire and I like it so much I had to replace it.

4 out of 5 stars impressive.......2006-03-02

I got this CD not expecting much based on the fact it is usually a taboo thing to try to cross over from acting to singing....Boy was I ever wrong, she is amazing, listening to her beautiful voice just calms the soul.If you like Dido or Enya, you will definetly like Minnie.Definetly a must to add to your collection. There is not one song that sticks out,you have to listen to the whole album to appreciate the beauty of it.

Though the uptempo "Wrecking Ball" shows that King Wilkie can function just fine as a straightforward bluegrass band, most of the music by the acoustic Virginia sextet draws more from classic rock and vintage country, and particularly from the influences where the two converge. The harmonies of "Millie's Song" recall those of the Everly Brothers, "Savannah" sounds like one of the Band's evocations of the American South, the singalong "Crazy Daisy" and the atmospheric insistence of "Stone & Steel" suggest the Byrds of the same era, and the honky-tonk shuffle of "Angeline" draws from the country side of the Rolling Stones. Yet bittersweet ballads such as "Rockabye (Farewell Lonesome Dove)" and "Captivator" are the sort of material that could fit just fine on country radio. From the chamber strings of "Oh My Love" to the ragtime whistle of "Ms. Peabody," this label debut showcases a band of impressive range, depth, and potential. --Don McLeese

Album Description

Even as they were named 2004's Emerging Artist of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association, the sound of King Wilkie was extending outward in directions that could no longer be comfortably contained under the bluegrass banner. The band spent the next two years touring non-stop, building a die-hard following and honing an idiosyncratic new sound. The result is the evocative, harrowing Low Country Suite - a dramatic push into uncharted sonic terrain. Produced by Jim Scott (Tom Petty, Dixie Chicks, Wilco), Low Country Suite draws on the pioneering spirit of Sweetheart of the Rodeo-era Byrds, Gram Parsons' solo LPs, and "Country Honk" Stones, while the album's gentler songs are equally informed by the stark, confessional folk of Nico, Nick Drake, and Leonard Cohen. Haunting yet strangely uplifting, Low Country Suite is the captivating sound of a band willing to leave precedent behind to create intoxicating new music from the jagged remains of yesterday.

5 out of 5 stars A new sound - King Wilkie.......2007-06-27

Do yourself a favor and buy/download/share this album. Best so far of 2007, and combines influences such as the beach boys, the byrds, stones, simon/garfunkel. But the voices here (both literal and lyrical) set them apart as their own. They aren't a bluegrass band, or a country band, or any other "kind" of band - they're just King Wilkie.

oh, and see them live in small venues while you still can.

thank me later

Playing Time - 42:48 -- From Charlottesville, Virginia, King Wilkie has a new contemporary Americana sound. Named for Father of Bluegrass Bill Monroe's favorite horse, the band's easy-going acoustic jaunt in this set is more of a canter than a gallop. Rather than high lonesome bluegrass, King Wilkie's "Low Country Suite" gives us a soothing folk-pop sound with rootsy feeling and earthy lilt. Striving for a more personal musical statement than traditional bluegrass afforded them, their approach has come to emphasize life experiences, their individual strengths and personal influences.

Initially formed in 2002 by Ted Pitney (guitar) and Reid Burgess (mandolin), these two graduates of Kenyon College in Ohio moved to Virginia to start a bluegrass band. The rest of the group includes Abe Spear (banjo), Drew Breakey (bass), Nick Reeb (fiddle), and John McDonald (guitar). In 2003, King Wilkie signed with Rebel Records. In 2004, they won IBMA's Emerging Artist of the Year Award. In 2005, their thoughtful melody-driven songs began marking an evolution of their musical makeover. The compositions on "Low Country Suite" are a number of pleasantly smooth movements that take us on a breezy jaunt through nostalgic, romantic or placid emotions. With some understated lap steel, organ, piano, harmonica or percussive embellishment in the mix, the set's result is one of mostly serene, laid-back imagery. "Angeline" is one of the more raucous offerings, with a hint of 1970s folk rock tonality. With its raw emotion and gritty realism, "Wrecking Ball" is a wild, thrilling ride with old-time spirit. "She's a wrecking ball coming through my wall so tall, like a house of straw these beautiful dreams will fall ....." The slow swing and bright lyricism of "Ms. Peabody" also provides some nice diversity to a mostly ethereal set mainly about "restlessness, coming of age, loss of innocence." The themes of absolution and liberation are clearly stated in "Captivator."

Produced by Jim Scott, an objective of "Low Country Suite" was to capture the band's own pioneering spirit in a manner reminiscent of the Byrds, Gram Parsons, Rolling Stones, Neil Young, or Bob Dylan. "King Wilkie creates their own genre of music -- a beautiful, true and honest sound," Scott once said. It's a lofty goal, and King Wilkie demonstrates both the aptitude and confidence to make a significant mark. The band now has the support of the reputable Rounder label, and I commend them for their flexibility, adaptability and relaxed sophistication. Thirty years from now, "Low Country Suite" may not be looked at as their defining work that established King Wilkie as an irresistible, clarion voice, but it certainly is a genuine, relaxed, good-time vibe full of alluring radiance and emotional pathos from their collective gut. With her debut album appearing at the age of 28, Martha Wainwright has lived in a musical world since she was born. She posses a voice with timbres similar to her brother, Rufus, and to her mother and aunt, Kate & Anna McGarrigle. She also has a way of stretching syllables out for reasons at once musical and textual, very much like her father, Loudon Wainwright, from whom she's also inherited a bold autobiographical stance, albeit couched in her own particular poetics. A bracing confidence informs these thirteen songs, from the bright shiny pop of "G.P.T." and "The Maker" (with the unmistakable voice of Rufus on backup vocals) to the fragile balladry of "Whither Must I Wander." Martha Wainwright continues the family tradition of audacious debuts. -- David Greenberger

Album Description

Martha Wainwright comes from a family that some would call "musical royalty." She is the daughter of Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright III, and sister of Rufus Wainwright, yet she writes and sings with a style completely her own. After several tours as opener and band-mate for Rufus Wainwright, and appearances on albums by Rufus, the McGarrigles, Gordon Gano (Violent Femmes) and Linda Thompson, Martha made her own bold statement with the release of her EP BMFA earlier this year. The EP garnered rave reviews: The London Times called it a "tour de force" while The New York Times named it "a gorgeous teaser" to her forthcoming full-length debut. The release of that self-titled debut album takes things to a whole new level. An album of contrasts, Martha Wainwright features tracks filled with raw, fiery, passionate energy alongside unforgettable, hauntingly beautiful ballads.

Maybe I'm just inclined to enjoy Martha (I'm a huge fan of her family, especially Rufus), but I think her voice is really strong and unique. Her songwriting ability on the other hand... well, let's just say that I never realize how important lyrics are to me until I find an artist who writes silly, rambling ones. Oh well, the sound quality is great, Martha's voice is a joy to listen to, and as long and you don't think too much about what she's actually saying it's quite enjoyable. Standout tracks are the heartfelt B.M.F.A., Whither Must I wander, and Who was I kidding? These songs have simpler instrumentals and less cheesy backup vocalizing, showcasing Martha's voice to its best advantage. All in all it's a somewhat mixed bag, but worth checking out.

4 out of 5 stars Martha Wainwright.......2006-12-09

Martha Wainwright~ Martha Wainwright is a very pleasant surprise indeed. I borrowed this album from my local library and to be honest I had never heard of this singer/musician before. Ms Wainwright is an accomplished vocalist and a very good lyricist. However, her lyrics can become a bit meandering at times and she seems to happy singing about subjects that just go on and on. At times I have really no idea what she is singing about at all but it sure sounds beautiful. The production value on this album is outstanding and the sound is crisp. The book-let is a mixed bag and the photo on the cover is terrible and looks like it has been taken by some high-school kid or shot with a cheap instant camera. The font is easy on the eye and the lyrics are therefore easy to read. This is a very good album that could use text editing but apart from this I give it four out five stars.

Experimental singer-songwriter Vienna Teng arrives at her ambitious third album at the peak of her considerable powers, with renowned producer/bassist Larry Klein (Joni Mitchell, Madeleine Peyroux) providing a more textured and atmospheric landscape. Contributions from musicians Jay Bellerose (Paula Cole, Duncan Sheik), Carla Kihlstedt (Tom Waits), and Marc Orton (Bill Frisell) make Teng's piano-based, jazzy chamber-folk shiver with new intimacy. But at the core, she remains as seductive and transcendent as ever, even as lyrically she takes more of a storytelling approach. Marrying complex melodies and moody tones to captivating lyrics about fevered longings, unspoken truths, and uncharted suffering, the former software engineer pulls listeners into a secret, subterranean world that is often as murky and disturbing as it is wondrous. On "Whatever You Want," a dutiful "company man" and his perfect wife pull back the curtain to reveal a disquieting darkness. In "I Don't Feel So Well," an unbalanced woman issues a provocative warning to a potential lover ("I thought you should know before you fall"). And on "Now Three," delicate cello lines play off a nearly mystical lyric about prenatal knowing. Teng delivers all 11 offerings in a chillingly pure soprano, multitracking her own voice 32 times on the Hurricane Katrina-inspired (if also overlong and ponderous) "Pontchartrain" to achieve something reminiscent of a Latin liturgical piece. Not yet 28 and frighteningly gifted ("Lake Pontchartrain is haunted: Bones without names, photographs framed in reeds"), Teng seems to know your own soul better than you do--the exquisitely beautiful "Recessional," which inspires the album title, may make you rethink your whole life. The album's most uplifting and hopeful cut: "City Hall," inspired by San Francisco's decision in 2004 to recognize gay marriage. ("Ten years waiting for this moment of fate / When we say the words and sign our names / If they take it away someday / This beautiful thing won't change.") Count Dreaming Through the Noise among the "can't miss" records of 2006. --Alanna Nash

Album Description

One might call quitting a lucrative job as a software engineer for a life as a singer-songwriter a risky career move. Fortunately for Vienna Teng, it has paid off. Within two years of leaving her Silicon Valley career behind, 27-year-old Teng has appeared on the CBS Early Show, Late Night with David Letterman, and NPR, and has gained a large devoted fanbase through constant touring, selling 60,000 copies of her first two albums. Vienna Teng reaches a new musical pinnacle on her third album, and debut for Zoë/Rounder, 'Dreaming Through the Noise.' Producer Larry Klein (Joni Mitchell, Madeleine Peyroux) provides Teng with the perfect setting for an unforgettable set of chamber-folk compositions, which showcase her sharp lyrical prowess as well as her skills as an accomplished pianist. The album's eleven original songs show both an amazing lyrical depth and a broad musical scope, which ranges from the perfect pop simplicity of "Whatever You Want" to the stunning musical tour de force of "Ponchartrain." Clearly her most ambitious work to date, 'Dreaming Through the Noise' confirms Vienna Teng as a brilliant young songwriter at the top of her craft.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and poetic.......2007-05-29

Wonderful CD. Perhaps not her strongest, but still definitely up there. I saw her at the Triple Door a week or so ago, and her voice carries beautifully in person and on disc.

My favorites on the track are "Blue Caravan" "Nothing Without You" and "Recessional".

4 out of 5 stars Probably her best yet.......2007-05-07

If you are looking for some melodic mellow music this is the CD for you. A few songs seemed out of place but overall this is a great CD if you are in the right mood.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing on CD and Live!.......2007-05-01

I recently had the privilege of experiencing Vienna Teng Live (April 27, 2007 in Moundridge Kansas). I've been a huge fan ever since I saw her on Letterman.

At the concert, even though not in the best of venues, Vienna was incredible. She didn't have impressive sound equipment, just a mic and a synthesizer. Her vocals were great and piano playing skills superb.

I realize I only had a small taste of her personality by conversing with her a few brief minutes after the concert, yet she seems very genuine and humble.

I highly recommend all three of her CDs but DEFINITELY GO SEE HER IN CONCERT!

5 out of 5 stars in a class of her own..........2007-03-02

If you've never heard of Vienna Teng before, don't let that fool you into thinking she must not be worth listening to. To the contrary, she may very well be one of the greatest treasures of American music to be found in this generation.
I came across this album by chance about 2 months ago. Took it home and have become more and more mesmerized by it. And, of course, this led me to go out and purchase her 2 previous recordings.
Vienna plays and sings with such grace. Her lyrics are well-thought-out, and as a result they penetrate the listener's mind and soul to a variety of desired effects. This album has, by far, the best instrumental arrangements out of her three recordings. There are wonderful uses of string ensembles along with some other unique combinations including accordion and mandolin.
I get the impression that there is an incredible mind behind the workings of a great album like this one. Vienna is an artist in the truest since of the word. She conveys her thoughts in a way that is not in anyway shallow, and yet is plainly accessible to a host of music lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Only five stars because that's all I have.......2007-02-17

It's difficult and daunting to review a work of art as exquisite as this latest album by Vienna Teng. First, the aural persona: she sounds to me like a very sensitive, cerebral person chosing her words carefully and with utmost restraint from great depths of feeling; hence, the curious cognative tension between her immaculately tender voice and the torrent of emotions held in check. Another reviewer described the result thus: "you feel like she's sitting across a little table from you and leaning in and telling you a story." This is also true.

Next, the moods: "Blue Caravan" is filled with yearning, longing, and adventure. It reminds one of the steppes of Central Asia, or Scheherazade in a moment of candor. "Whatever you want," in contrast, makes a double entendre of cheerfulness: the company man and his wife are wired to gratify, but look forward to their liberation and revenge; the arrangement and orchestration are brilliant and fun. At the extreme opposite is "Pontchartrain," a piece so moving and grave, so emotionally harrowing, that few of the greatest musicians--perhaps Nina Simone--could carry it off. (I recommend listening to that one on headphones, alone or with someone who would understand.)

It's difficult to think of how this album could be more perfect than it is. It attempts much, and accomplishes it all. It occurred to me that I was actually observing the emergence of one of the very few great performers of our lifetime.

Since they emerged in the early 90s, Newfoundland's own Great Big Sea have gradually consolidated a reputation as one of the greatest neo-Celt bands, from anywhere in the Six Nations or, as in this case, beyond. Drawing upon their homeland's strong Irish and Scottish ancestry and centuries-old seafaring heritage, they have fashioned a roistering, danceable sound and a live presence not unlike a bar-band but operating on a massive scale. But for all their good-time, party-hearty extroversion, they also demonstrate a rare affinity for love songs and more introspective types of material. Recorded in spectacular sound before adoring audiences, this "kitchen party," as one band member described it, is at once intimate and grand, folkloric and modern, acoustic and electric. Traditional instruments like fiddle, tin whistle, accordion are fused seamlessly with electric guitars and trap drums, plus tight and charismatic lead and harmony vocals, creating a spiraling energy that takes the crowd by storm and hurtles from living room speakers like a conquering wave. The CD is accompanied by a must-have DVD, which not only includes 26 tracks of concert footage but four essential music videos, one of which, "Lukey," features a collaboration with the Chieftains. --Christina Roden

3 out of 5 stars They sound tired.......2007-07-23

This one is just disappointing. I absolutely love GBS but this offering is not up to snuff. They sound raspy, worn-out and tired. This is evident by Alan's changing several melodic lines to avoid signing high. The energy of both the band and the crowd are not near as high as in the Great Big DVD. This is nice to have the more recent songs, but I wish it would've been a better performance.

Nonetheless, an average performance by this band is still better than most bands playing today.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL GOOD!!!!!!.......2007-07-04

I will admit that I was a bit slow in learning of this excellent group and discovered them quite by accident. I love Celtic music and had recently heard them singing Capt. Kidd on Pandora. I went straight to Amazon and ordered Courage & Patience & Grit. It not only has 20 something songs on the CD, but extra tracks on the DVD portion for the live concert. These guys, Sean, Alan & Bob, are not only extremely musically talented but smart, witty and funny as well. VERY well worth every penny!!!!! I plan on buying more of their product!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Different, though enjoyable.......2007-05-24

To be honest, they have added a little weight, lost a little pep and seem to be focusing on a little older crowd. These are all just little perceptions that a long time fan would pick up. Some of the songs are done very well, some not so well. I loved Gideon Brown (which is not on the Hard & The Easy CD) but other favorites came off a little flat. I missed Tickle Cove Pond, which I thought would be included surely. Coupled to these disappointments is the fact that Sean seemed to make comments bordering on inappropriate for youngsters during the video performance. Did I enjoy it, yes. As much as the Great Big DVD? No. Their performances in that video may not ever be matched. The music on the Hard & The Easy CD is EXCELLENT and I must suggest you get that CD coupled with this 2 disc set to experience it completely. Great Big Sea is always able to provide truly amazing value with their releases. A video DVD and CD are included in quite a few releases and I look forward to the next one. In summary, this was a good addition but not quite up to par with past presentations.

4 out of 5 stars Courage & Patience & Grit - Great Big Sea In Concert [CD/DVD Combo].......2007-04-12

Good Canadian-Irish group with a distinctive flair for regional music and traditional Irish music. The CD is good, the DVD is better. You get a much better feel for the group and the music by watching it first.

Once the vision and voice behind the critically acclaimed alternative band Grant Lee Buffalo, Grant-Lee Phillips is now a five-album solo artist with an unpretentious shtick: sweeping melodies, narrative lyrics, and a truly hypnotic vocal style. After garnering success in both movie and television soundtracks and releasing a cover record of songs from the '80s underground, the Californian has made perhaps his most intimate recording yet. Phillips plays nearly every instrument (including ukulele) on a dozen songs that crisscross between anguish and optimism, discord and salvation, but are crafted with the deftness of a poet and the ingenuity of a composer. Those that rise to the top display the commanding influences of his '70s youth, most notably the folksy "Killing a Dead Man," which recalls Zuma-era Neil Young, the country-blues singalong "Hidden Hand," and "Raise the Spirit," a down-and-dirty ditty that rattles the woofers as only Marc Bolan could. Still at the top of his game, Phillips is never one to allow his prolific initiative to sour--a formula that bodes well for record six, and all of us lucky enough to hear it. --Scott Holter

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not extraordinary.......2007-04-30

Especially for Grant-Lee Phillips. No song really stood out to me, sorry. There was just no equivalent to "See America" or "Spring Released" or "Mona Lisa."

My least favorite of his solo albums yet, but with that said, it was still pretty darn good.

4 out of 5 stars GLP's best solo album.......2007-04-14

This is Grant-Lee's best work since the sad demise of the Buffalo. "Mobilize" had some great songs, but having a real drummer makes "Strangelet" stronger and more band-sounding for a basically solo-created CD.
His recent 80's album was worth one listen. Yes, Grant has the best voice in rock, but that doesn't mean he sings "Love My Way" better than Richard (nicotine foghorn) Butler. I'm not sure he'll ever rock or really unleash his voice like on "Mighty Joe Moon", but a few songs early on are louder and almost rock out. So far, the first 3 cuts are very strong. Then 3 separate songs have a T. Rex/Bryan Ferry glam-dream-pop feeling. 1 or 2 songs sound like "Virginia Creeper" out-takes. Anyway, this CD can appeal to fans from all stages of his career. As much as Coldplay made me hate falsetto voices, Grant is THE master of falsetto, and several octaves below too. Sell your copy of "Ladies Love Oracle", this is the real thing.

5 out of 5 stars I hope he keeps making albums for 50 years because I'll keep buying 'em!.......2007-03-30

I've been a fan since the GLB days of "Fuzzy" but I wasn't too impressed with the so-so "nineteeneighties" covers album. But if it bought Grant some more time to work on this stellar album then all is forgiven.

The intimate, quiet songs are the ones I think Grant does best, but there are some good "rock" songs on this album too. I've read a lot of T. Rex/Mark Bolan comparisons for songs like "Johnny Guitar" and "Raise The Spirit" and they're apt. But even so, they have Grant's own distinctive dream-like sound, which is unlike any other artist recording today.

The arrangements on every song on this album are excellent, and a lot fuller and more textured than on "Virginia Creeper" (no knock on that album by the way). "Fountain Of Youth," "Dream In Color," "Killing A Dead Man" and "Same Blue Devils" all sound like they're simple songs, but have a lot more going on upon closer listen. "Hidden Hand" sounds like it could be early 70s John Lennon to my ear.

Each of Grant's solo albums have had a slightly different flavor to them, and this one would be great for a Saturday night with a few close friends. He's still growing and maturing and these songs are beautiful, personal songs that you feel lucky to get to hear. Pick this up as soon as possible - it's excellent!
