THE LEGEND !.......2006-07-04

As similar to the terrible ending of film legend, Dorothy Dandridge, it seems Phyllis Hyman met the same fate. Why they took their own lives, no one really knows. They were just as great as these living legends: Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, Angela Bofill, and Whitney Houston on the popular Arista label. Their memories will live on !!

I always loved the song You Know How to Love Me but never new the artist that recorded it although I did hear of Phyllis. I bought this CD for that one song and the whole disk is great. My personal favorite is You Sure Look Good To Me. That song has so much energy I don't know why it wasn't a big hit. It had me hooked in the first minute of the song. She is a versataille artist who covers the likes of R&B, Jazz, Soul etc. Such a shame she had to leave the world with all that talent. As a previous reviewer mentioned this is only a sampler CD and I've already ordered her Legacy 2CD and also this same CD so I can keep one in the car. Can't leave home without Phyllis.

Phyllis' first-ever compilation album........2005-02-22

This was Phyllis' first-ever anthology and includes some of her biggest Arista hits. Unfortunately, much of the material Arista boss Clive Davis (and his cohorts) gave Phyllis did NOT do her talents justice as they tried to make her a commercial diva. The tragedy about artists like Phyllis, Jean Carne, Angela Bofill, Brenda Russell and Patti Austin is that their best songs were album-only tracks which had no commercial appeal (as such, the single releases had to be trendy to some degree). This IS a good CD but the "Legacy Of Phyllis Hyman" 2-CD set offers both better value for your money AND a much better selection of Phyllis' music.

We know that Phyllis Hyman is not around anymore but she's lives on tho right here on this greatest hits compilation which I have on cassette. I thank God for her talent, work, and legacy she left us behind be4 she's been in the music business all her life. Can't say much 'bout it but this is a must who wants to pay their respect to Phyllis Hyman, the songstress of Jazz, Soul & R&B.

Phyllis, I'm a real big fan and miss you eternally, R.I.P.

Hyman could do more with one measure than many other artists could do with an entire composition. This is a mere "sampler" of the wonderful talent that was Phyllis Hyman.

It is worth the money, the time, and the reflection on a life so sadly taken too soon.

Beautiful Music.......2007-05-01

I originally bought this album after hearing 'The Squizzle' and I purchased this album on the strength of that song alone. At first, it was (for the most part) the only song I listened to on the album because I have a large musical collection and I didn't have time to really get in-depth and listen to the album. Weeks later, at work, I was able to actually give the album a throrough listening from front to back and this is a really nice album. The music is light and airy. It's perfect for cruising in the car on a gorgeous spring day or as background music at a family function or at a wedding reception. It's perfect for almost any mood or setting, quite honestly. It's a nice melding of contemporary Jazz and some R&B. Great album.

Shakatak.......2004-12-12

I have listened to Shakatak from very beginning. It has been allways superb music, a fusion between jazz, latin and funk. Quite a talent from this British ensemble.

I first fell in love with Shakatak when I heard their "Perfect Smile" CD. This album is almost as good. The group, which is from the UK, is extremely talented. The vocals are superb as are all of the other musicians. I highly recommend it. And I'm on a mission to collect all of their CD's.

He was handsome, hot, had a rich, distinctive voice and was a vulgar SOB, but you had to love baritone Lawrence Tibbett's audacity in falsifying a composer's intentions while he made the music as exciting and flashy as possible. This two-disc collection take from the Stanford University Archives covers his famous roles in Carmen and Barber of Seville, plus his forays into pop tunes and even his rendition of the "Star Spangled Banner." It's an interesting time capsule since Tibbett touch on so many media--even movies. cold dub platter.......2005-10-31

Mad Professor's take on dub is very interesting. all the standard dub elements are firmy in place, the echoing drums, the plodding basslines, and reverb by the gallons; but where he differs from many of his dub contemporaries is his robotic sense of production and flow. it's very electronic in nature and therefore can come across as rather cold and sterile. personally, i like my dub more warm than cold; but Mad Professor infuses his dubs w/ enough varied ingredients that make Under The Spell Of Dub worthwhile. there's lots of weird trip hop beats on here and plenty of strange choices in production that might drive the rootsy dub listener crazy, but keep an open mind and you'll discover some sonic treats.

Mad Professor techniques and was blown away
by the versatility of the tracks and the samples
from Denis Nolan were simply music to my ears.

A Dub Classic.......1999-08-09

As soon as the professor pronounces his spell in the opening line you are uder his control, resistance is useless, sitting still an impossibility! This album is so full of energy that you just have to boogie around. Play it with headphones and your collegues will think you've lost it and definitely NEVER play this in the car (unless of course you can afford the speeding fines).

A great album for parties or any time you have run out of steam and need an instant pickup. "Santero Dub", "Mad Elaine", "Brewing Storm", "False Curl Girl", and "Black Panther Dub" are classics, the rest is good too!

If you're gonna have one Professor album make sure it is this one.

Another Good One.......2001-09-24

In typical Shakatak style, "Under Your Spell" is chock-full of tracks that will keep you jammin' from beginning to end. The first track, "Sunshine," sets the stage with an upbeat, soulful rhythmn that will have you up on your feet, moving to the beat. The remaining tracks are a combination of fast, slow songs that flow in the usual Shakatak arrangement. Shakatak has done it again. I have been a Shak fan for years since my college days. This CD reminds me of one of their earlier pieces, "Intuition," which rose to the charts and propelled the group into being one of the world's best contemporary jazz groups. I'm sue this CD will be another hit in their already successful musicial portfolio.

Finally Ran Out of Steam.......2003-06-08

Mr. Hole's first two efforts, "Short Fuse Blues" and "Working Overtime," just blew me away with his monstrous electric slide playing. I didn't think he could possibly top them, but he did with his next two efforts, "Steel on Steel" and "Ticket to Chicago." But "Under the Spell" lacks the fire, intensity and quality songwriting of these previous efforts, and especially is missing the outstanding acoustic numbers that peppered "Steel" and "Chicago." I'm a huge Dave Hole fan, but I ended up Ebay-ing this one. Not an awful album, just not up to par with his previous four. Not the place to start if you want the definitive Dave Hole.

You're not so good Dave!.......1999-11-22

I'm a bluesfan from Brazil,and like others,don't liked this last Hole's work.He's far from his originals two best works,and we're waiting for better days! Poor album!

A bit of a disappointment.......1999-10-14

I've had the pleasure of both meeting Dave Hole in person and seeing him perform live. I decided to skip the two shows in Chicago this past month, though, as this release soured me a bit on him. Dave Hole, like many artists, loses a bit with each release. The smoke and fire of his first two releases just isn't there anymore. Each release is of lesser quality than the one before it. I'm afraid the next one will be acoustic. If you're a true Dave Hole fan, this one can find a spot in the collection. For first time buyers, however, check out the searing "Short Fuse Blues" and "Working Overtime".

Top quality blues rock from a highly underrated player.......1999-07-18

Dave Hole is Australian and unfortunately not well known, which is a pity because he is one of the best blues and slide guitar players in the world.

All of his albums are good, and this one is no exception.

If you ever have a chance to see him, and I believe that he is on tour in the Europe and the States in July / Sept, you will not be disappointed. Great player, great show.
