About the Artist
Velia started her vocal training with a member of the Australian Opera Company at the age of 19 and then went on to explore contemporary singing with Australian superstar, Marcia Hines. She has been performing professionally for 8 years, and 5 of those were spent playing the Sydney club circuit in various cover bands such as All the Ingredients, Cocktail Boogaloo and 2/4 Groove. The latter band won an opening spot for Australian pop star, Margaret Urlich. While in the San Francisco Bay Area, Velia has formed her first original band, and has completed her debut CD entitled "Something Has to Change". She has made a television appearance on "Showcase" and has been well received in renowned clubs such as the Paradise Lounge, Mick's Lounge and the Sweetwater. Velia has also been voted Best Unsigned Artist by a Gavin Convention Panel.

Band members: Velia - Vocals

Product Description
"Something Has to Change" is a concoction of groove, rock and dance music. I like to call it "groove with an edge" and it's definitely not another one of those "You've heard one song, you've heard 'em all" CDs. Even though most of the tracks are danceable, I wanted to make sure that the lyrics were given as much consideration as the beats, ensuring that they were cliche free and full of attitude.

5 out of 5 stars Don't change a thing.......2000-06-29

Don't change a thing about this upbeat CD. The music is fresh and distinctive. The lyrics are heart felt and meaningful to whom ever hears these original numbers. I loved the songs HE'S GONE and WHO SAID; they spoke to me. This is a very new sound for me and I liked it alot.

4 out of 5 stars Infectious hooks and grrooooves.......2000-06-27

A very fine first effort, from lush ballads to danceable beats to 80's pop/rock. Velia sings all the vocals on this album, and the layering of background vocals are very nice, often reminiscent of Basia. Several songs contain passages with pianos and beats familiar to Joe Jackson's in the mid-80's.

The albums opens with two danceable tunes, "Joining Up" and "If I Ever Find You", the latter song's lyrics putting me right into the workaday pattern of getting up, going to work, coming home, and possibly coming within a few feet of someone special but not knowing it.

The first two ballads, "He's Gone" and "Maybe We Could Try Again", are nice love songs, with soaring choruses and swirling synthesizers. The third, "You Hold Me Through the Storm", dedicated to Velia's mother, is a beautiful song about appreciation of single-parenthood sacrifices (something I can relate to as a part-time Dad) and brought a tear or two to my eyes.

"Men & Women", a song about the differences between the sexes, has a great straight-forward rhythm section groove during the verses, and then breaks into a cooking chorus with wonderful vocals and exhuberant guitar.

"Haunting Me" and the disk's title track, "Something Has to Change", have a nice foot-tapping beat, the kind of songs that you like to hum to yourself throughout the day.

The album finishes with a high-energy rock number, "Who Said", which has searing guitar, and great intertwined styles with the vocals and chorus.

I can't wait to hear more from Velia, I hope we don't have too long to wait!
