Fans of Cesaria Evora have been kept in short commons for some years by a relative dearth of new material and emerging talent. But Lura, who was born in Portugal of Cape Verdean parents, is clearly a contender for latter's throne. The beautiful young singer describes herself as a country girl and as such, is more interested in rural styles like the funana, bataku and the European, colonial-based mazurka than in the more urban morna, a barroom blues associated with the elder diva. Her songs, many of them self-composed, deal with small-town realities like a mother's advice to her son in hard times, an unplanned pregnancy, uninhibited holiday celebrations and other tales that might well be discussed on a neighbor's door-step. This is not to say that she is a narrow-minded provincial or hide-bound traditionalist; her arrangements are paragons of acoustic elegance, owing as much to R&B, Argentinean tango, post-Tropicalia Brazilian pop and French chanson as hometown firesides. Her voice, a clear mezzo-soprano-to-alto, ranges from girlish to smoky but as her material tends toward upbeat rhythms, it is her sun-drenched, precisely calibrated melodic sense and crackerjack phrasing that anchors each tune. The title track, a frenetic hip-swinger sung as a duet with Zeco di Nha Reinalda, could make a stone dance. --Christina Roden

O quarto, o sonido è perfeito, as cançoes sao muito lindas mesmo, Ela descobriu a muito tempo as suas origem, ou seja as sua raizes, eu gosto muito deste cd mas acho que di korpu... e um bocadinho melhor, mas acqui pode ouvir cançoes maravilhosas mesmo!

I really believe this record is an extraordinary achievement in Cape verdean music. If Lura's first major label international release, "With heart and soul", reflected her roots in the new Batuku style under the influence of the now legendary Orlando Pantera (she covered 4 Pantera songs on that record), here she spreads her wings further, in true Krioulu style, assimilating what she finds best in a broad variety of styles, both indigenous to the islands and from abroad. The result is spectacular, and much broader and deeper than her previous work. Her voice is getting much better with age (for an interesting view of how her voice has improved over the years, check out her vocals on Bonga's record, Mulemba Xangola). And as Lura is surrounding herself with a very talented and diverse set of musicians whose work on this record is very good. Most notably, Lura's keyboardist, Toy Vieira, really comes into his own as a songwriter on this record. He clearly has a great talent for songwriting and the Toy Vieira/Lura collaboration promises to be a very fruitful one. This record establishes Lura as the most interesting and innovative artist recording in Krioulu today. I look forward to giving 5 stars to her next release because it will undoubtedly be even better.

Another artistic album.......2007-05-15

I was lucky enough to see Lura live here in Washington, D.C. a couple of years ago and became an instant fan.

This album was well worth the wait and I'm happy to see that she's getting support from her record company.

Accomplished........2007-04-24

Big-voiced, big-afro'd, seductive Cape Verdean Lura began her career as backing singer for Cesaria Evora - the islands' great diva.

But while the 29-year-old Lura's 2005 debut "Di Korpu ku Alma" seemed to establish her as Evora's natural successor, a number of younger pretenders have since emerged, notably Sara Tavares and Mayra Andrade. Both are barely into their twenties and pushing a similarly tasteful, if slightly anodyne variant on Evora's classic, sultry Cape Verde sound.

Lura's principal counter-weapon is her voice, its dark, distinctively African timbre preventing her music from descending into mere prettiness.

Yet while the slower numbers on this accomplished second album have a stately languor almost worthy of Evora herself, the smoothness of the sound doesn't suit the more up-tempo pieces.
Their relentless brightness leaves listeners longing for a more earthy production.

Portuguese singer Lura presents M'bem Di Fora ("I Come From The Country"), her second North American music CD album, which draws heavily upon her love of her countryside home, and the unique musical traditions of the Cape Verde islands. Cape Verde is a semi-arid island string of ten islands hundreds of miles from mainland Africa; each island has its own distinct rhythms, and all of them formed inspiration for Lura's lively music anthology. Acqui a cançoes que sao lindas, Ela com certeza mudou um bocadinho o estilo da musica cabo verdiana, ela tem uma personalidade muito forte, ela è com certeza o futuro da musica cabo verdiana.
Os primeiros dois cd "nha vida" e "love" sao musica portuguesa commercial che se chama "zuco", mas com este cd ela descubre as sua raizes e assim ela consagrou-se com a nova estrella da musica africana.

I'm a native Cabo Verdean and truly enjoyed this CD. Lura has a style of her own. It's great for listening or dancing. If you are a "true" Cabo Verdean, you will definately do more than tap your feet. I highly recommed this CD.

Lura viva Africa.......2006-08-01

This is an absolute must have. I had never been exposed to West African music but this CD got me hooked. I am from Southern Africa and thats all I knew music wise but I must say, African musicians are under rated, they have a lot to offer but the world hasn't taken notice yet. Lura does justice to the beauty of African music on this CD.

Lura Lures Listeners .......2006-07-31

This is enchanting music from beginning to end. Although I had read about Lura for awhile, I only recently purchased this cd. I was immediately drawn to the beauty of this music; although it is labeled as Cape Verdean, it embraces a variety of rhythms and genres. Lura's energetic voice and her interpretive style at times, remind me of a blend of Margareth Menezes and Yusa. Lura has her own unique and powerful presence which is accompanied by outstanding musicians. The guitar work is particularly impressive, while the violin and accordian keep the music fresh, interesting, and mesmerizing. Five tracks on this cd were written by the late Orlando Pantera, and I am grateful to be exposed to his work through Lura's music. Although every Pantera song is incredible, I tend to favor the more rhythmic songs, "Batuku," "Vazulina," and "Raboita di Rubon Manel," Lura's vocals are extroadinary on these tracks. Lura should also be recognized for her songwriting, especially on "Oh Naia". To take the next step of the Lura experience, listeners must check out the dvd included in this cd package. The Lura concert on this dvd not only gives listeners a visual understanding of Lura's talent; her highly dynamic and expressive performance radiates with soul and passion...luring audiences at any venue, in any language,

Curiosity is an amazing propeller in this world we live in..........2006-04-03

I was more than skeptical for reasons I'll never know, to actually purchase this cd. I heard a few clips, and just couldn't get into it. I thought, "this is just another afro-latin/tropicalismo cd. I have a few of these, why bother?" By the time I heard the clip for #7, I reluctantly handed over the credit card, because I have been known to buy albums just for one song. #7 stood out at once, and I could feel myself relax. Okay, I'll buy it just for this song.

I never dissappoint myself, neither do the artists I place a mustard seed of faith in.

This incredibly dynamic and strangely spiritual album is one of the best I have ever bought. Her voice is so authentic, but like rich, dark chocolate that can only be savored. And its all worth the time. This album is pleasure at its best. Perfect for bright warm days at the beach or a cookout, yet romantic and sensual for a dinner for two...or a dinner party for eight. Its wonderful to put the children to sleep, and upbeat to dance until the sun returns.

I listen with awe, fascination, inspiration, honor...she is a professional if I ever heard one. This is one album you will never regret purchasing. It has the right measurements of spice, jazz, island, afro, asiatic and tropical influences that make a complete music experience a reality.

If you are a fan of world music, or good music in general, once you get this album, you'll wished you had heard about it sooner.

A true exponent of Cape Verde music and culture, Tcheka aka is a talent that brings a fresh approach to his work. In his American label debut (Four Quarters Entertainment) "Nu Monda" is as invigorating as it is enlightening. Tcheka's forceful voice along with his sense of style ensconces the listener into a world of colour and texture that only his native island can offer. This album will take you on a journey that will leave you wanting more with every play. The album is thoughtfully sequenced and flows freely from track to track. Job well done.Again not a project I have had the pleasure to work on but a must have for my own library.

Tcheka Emerging .......2007-06-18

I purchased the imported version of "Nu Monda" awhile ago and was instantly taken with Tcheka, as a matter of fact, I couldn't put the cd away. I listened to "Nu Monda" faithfully every night,it gave me a warm, spiritual,and reflective feeling. Tcheka (aka Manual Lopes Andrade) is one of many young emerging Cape Verdean artists leading the charge,with a new blend of traditional and contemporary songs. It is always a challenge to write about music with lyrics in languages that are not understood, but despite this limitation of mine, I can say with great conviction that the voice and music of Tcheka is universally inspirational. I have tried to think about other artists who sound similar, but I have come up short, comparisons will do no justice for this legend in the making. Tcheka cries out his words with his amazing range; he is an outstanding guitarist and composer who creates a beautiful aura with pleasant rhythms mixed in. The standout track for me on this well produced cd, is Pico's Road (Strada Pico), followed by Rozadi Rezadou, and Let's Plow (Nu Monda). If you are interested in Cape Verdean music and culture and want to experience a refreshing sound, Tcheka is your guide.

My mom bought this years ago and I still think it's wonderful music for Christmas. Definitely buy this album.

Simply one of the best Christmas albums on the market........2004-12-26

There is nothing to criticize on this CD, along with its wonderful companions, Medeival Christmas and Baroque Christmas. The singing is absolutely masterful; the instrumentation is faithful to what would've been used during the time period for additional authenticity. The narration in the various accents, taken directly from the story of the nativity in the Bible, really strings the different songs togheter. The various offerings from around the world connects the listener to two thousand years of Christmas tradition. We are of Catalan descent, so we were especially pleased to find "Tau Garçó, la Durundena," an ancient Catalan madrigal, but my personal favorite is the reverent, perfectly realized "O Magnum Mysterium" (Oh, Greatest of Mysteries), which has to be one of the most beautiful Christmas songs ever written. I have heard this song performed by many choirs and madrigal groups, and this CD's version is by far the most beautiful I've ever heard.

The music on this CD is so timeless and rich in quality and history that I actually listen to it year round, but it adds a special sparkle to holiday celebrations in a way that "Jingle Bell Rock" can never hope to achieve. :) This series is a real gift to the music world and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

The best........2004-10-04

I have had this Cd isnce it was released and year after year it delights, amazes and fills my family's heart with holiday joy. Like other reviewers have said, I agree that the quality of this CD (along with the companion CDs a Medival Christmas and a Baroque Christmas) is truly a revelation. But what I love most is simply listening to songs that aren't as well known as other carols- it connects you to the past instantly and also makes you feel the real reason for the season. Simply gorgeous and heavenly.

Fantabulous! This is millenial Christmas music, the sort that will endure long after the stuff Americans listen to has faded away. If you like real music, have a copy of this. If you like the first art, BC can't be beat. What a job! And, outside of a couple of tiny oversights, the accompanying text is very well done.

Christmas and connections to the past..............2000-11-14

These three excellently produced CDs evoke medieval manor houses, renaissance courts, and baroque choir boys as we hear Christmas music, fresh to our ears from another time and place. We hear familiar Christmas carols as well, but in their original setting. A mood of quiet joy pervades the presentation.

One of the best albums ever!!!.......2004-10-07

A friend of mine gave me a copy of this album, which she discovered in Cape Verde. I was blown away! Lura has such an amazing voice and sings with incredible passion, soul, and energy. She combines the haunting style of the Cape Verdean morna and Portuguese fado with more upbeat coladera and Brazilian flavor. For all of you "world music" fans, I predict that this beautiful singer will be the next big thing...on par with a Cesaria Evora or Bebel Gilberto. A fascinating blend of sodade and sabor!

I bought this album because of the song "Go back to Piaui" by Juca Chaves. I was surprised to see the quality of the recording is very good and the other songs in the cd are also good. This is a very interesting album that added value to my collection.
