Bassist Charlie Haden was an integral part of Ornette Coleman's pioneering avant-garde groups in the '50s and '60s and led his own equally forward-thinking Liberation Music Orchestra. His ensemble Quartet West, with tenor saxophonist Ernie Watts, drummer Larance Marable, and pianist Alan Broadbent, revealed a sentimental side of his musical personality that surprised many. This recording, with string arrangements by Broadbent, sounds like a soundtrack to a Raymond Chandler film as Haden's sturdy bass tones make him a worthy supporting actor. But although Shirley Horn's ethereal voice sparkles on "Lonely Town," "In Love in Vain," and "I'm Gonna Laugh You Right Out of My Life," and crooner Bill Henderson's towering pipes are radiant on "Why Did I Choose You," "Ruth's Waltz," "You My Love," and "Easy on the Heart," all of the material is in pretty much the same ballad tempo, which, compounded by the time length of the CD, robs it of the romantic resonance it could truly shine on the listener. --Eugene Holley Jr.

5 out of 5 stars Age breeds a shining moment.......2003-11-20

The criticisms miss the point. This is an effort that does a rare thing - it brings together men and women who can put the experience of life to judicious use in their art. Unlike listening to the deterioration other performers have faced, in later years, at the hands of studio production teams that no longer know what to do with them, Charlie Haden has found a way to create a beautiful volume of space in which to let the years of these venerated performers shine through. It is in this space you shall hear the notes of lives lived and savored.

3 out of 5 stars Nice but dismissable........2001-08-09

Haden's pleasant miscellany of neglected but deserving ballads is indeed a mixed bag, but somehow his focus, purpose, and method elude this listener. Neophyte writers are frequently enjoined to compose with a sharp, definitive, unified "thesis." Haden could have used a bit of coaching along these lines before producing this collection. Even drawing upon a common composer (as opposed to ranging from Kern to Rachmaninoff to public domain) might have provided the needed coherence to the project.

In any case, it's always a welcome experience to hear Shirley Horn; the revival of a touching ballad like "In Love in Vain" merits our appreciation; and though I was never a big fan of Bill Henderson (an acquired taste), he deserves to be recorded based on the evidence of this recording.

In sum, this album is more than anything else a "sampler" and should have been priced accordingly.

4 out of 5 stars Disappointing by Quartet West standards.......2001-05-09

The outstanding Quartet West album is 'Always Say Goodbye'. On that CD, Broadbent demonstrates his skills at orchestral arrangement, and Haden deftly selects great oldies to intermingle with some of his own superb compositions. Haden also takes some historic performances -- such as Jo Stafford on vocals -- to bring a resonance to the new covers. The experiment was very successful.

You can see the logic behind this subsequent album: instead of using dusty old recordings, why don't we use today's state-of-the-art production to capture the voices of several current artists? And why don't we let Alan orchestrate the whole album?

The trouble is that the orchestration, beautiful though it is throughout, constrains the band terribly. And the vocals swamp the album. (Actually the Jo Stafford track on 'Always Say Goodbye' is one of the weakest on the album.) They say that the saxophone is the instrument closest to the human voice, and it is Ernie Watts who suffers most on this album, The sax is simply crowded out by all the singing. It is only on the stand-out track, 'Prelude en la mineur', an instrumental re-working of a Ravel piece, that Watts finally gets a chance to let rip.

Shirley Horn's vocals are fine, particularly on 'Lonely Town'. But I simply cannot listen to any of the tracks containing Bill Henderson's voice, and sadly, there are four of them.

The most touching song is the last one, where Haden himself bravely takes the vocal lead. It's a song his mother used to sing on the radio, back in the early 1940s, when the entire Haden family would appear on KWTO Springfield. It is a farewell to the dead, and also a reassurance that one day they will meet again.

If you want a quick survey of this CD, check out tracks #1, #9 and #13. It's a long way from the days of Haden's playing with Ornette Coleman and the Liberation Orchestra, and it's very mellow.

5 out of 5 stars If you breathe and have ears, buy this record!.......2001-04-15

I first heard of Charlie Haden on Dublin's best radio music show - The Mystery Train presented by John Kelly on RTE Radio 1. I bought this CD and it has never been off my current play list. This is beautiful music that touches the heart. Listen to Wayfaring Stranger, Lonely Town, I'm Gonna Laugh You Right Out Of My Life, or Ruth's Walz after a tough day at the office or jammed in traffic and you will be back in touch with the good things in life. As someone who has evolved though Thin Lizzy, The Eagles, Eric Clapton, Queen, U2, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, BB King, Grant Green etc, Charlie Haden is proof of my graduation. After since buying other and even better Haden CD's, I am looking forward to seeing him in concert with Quartet West here in Dublin on April 29. BUY IT NOW!

5 out of 5 stars A Night and a Lonely Town.......2000-05-24

Despite its problems, I think this album still deserves a five-star rating. Seemingly inspired by the music of moody classic cinema, a listener might well envision a seedy nightclub in a fog-swept black & white San Francisco of the 1940s or a tearful Ingrid Bergman about to board a twin-propellor leaving Rick and Casablanca behind her forever.

Regardless of which side of the Atlantic you envision on your moody musical journey, this is definitely a lounging type of music, perfect for lazy Sunday afternoons, after-theatre drives around town on warm summer evenings, warm candle-lit baths, or romantic dinners for two. The beautifully romantic ballads range from the longing "Lonely Town" to the mostly-resolute "I'm Going to Laugh You Right Out of My Life" to the quietly complacent "The Folks Who Live on the Hill." Interspersed with these great standards, however, are wonderful instrumental pieces which frame the remaining vocals with stunningly dramatic moods.

The only flaw is the rather unappealing voice of Bill Henderson, who seems to be suffering from a weak set of lungs, if not from lack of enthusiasm. Henderson seems to strive for the vocal capabilities of Shirley Horn, who sings on 1, 4, 7 and 10, but is incapable of achieving those same dramatic pitches of his fellow artist. Nevertheless, he does an adequate job on "Ruth's Waltz" and "Easy on the Heart" even if "Why Did I Choose You" is downright painful to listen to. Haden, who sings on 13, seems similarly incapable of reaching Horn's heights, but "Wayfaring Stranger," the traditional song he chose to render, is capable of carrying itself with the slow somber tone it evokes in the listener.

Regardless of its faults, this remains a beautiful album. I definitely recommend it to anyone who loves the kind of sit-at-home music it captures so very well in its beautifully jazzy tunes that are, at the very least, easy on the ears.

It's said politics makes strange bedfellows. But it's got nothing on the peculiar marriage of art and history inspired by the tragic events of 9/11/01. Before that day, Daniel Rodriguez was a member of New York's finest, working as an NYPD security officer at the Manhattan South precinct. If it seemed an odd calling for a gifted, operatically trained tenor, it was employment many a journeyman artist could relate to: the proverbial "day job." As it turns out, no police academy in the world could have trained Rodriguez for the crucial role his city's darkest hour thrust upon him. While his colleagues mourned their staggering losses and toiled around the clock in rescue efforts, Rodriguez delivered renditions of "God Bless America" that rallied both his city and his country, much as Kate Smith's version of the Irving Berlin patriotic standard had done at the dawn of WWII.

Contemporary jazz great-producer Tom Scott took it from there, showcasing Rodriguez's powerful voice in this deftly arranged album focused sharply on personal and national inspiration. Taking his cue from his own hero, Mario Lanza, Rodriguez instills no small amount of drama in his performances, and it serves him well on tracks like the American folk classic "Shenandoah," a rousing take on Scarlet Pimpernel's "Into the Fire," and the relative Sinatra rarity "The House I Live In." The "God Bless America" here varies from the original single release, with Rodriguez reading the spoken intro once delivered by Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. Is Rodriguez the greatest tenor of modern times? No. But it's hard to imagine a talent better suited to the challenge history has thrust upon him; we're lucky--make that blessed--to have him. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-07-21

This cd will bring tears to your eyes. His voice is so clear and lovely. I bought this cd for my mother for her birthday in September. It is so sad that the events of September 11 had to occur for this man to be discovered.

5 out of 5 stars God Bless Daniel Rodriquez.......2007-07-16

This alblum is a treasure to own and listen to. He really captures the spirit of patriotism. I have played his songs at a local fireworks show that I DJ at and his songs are up there with the other songs by artists by Mr. Lee "God Bless The U.S.A." Greenwood and other great artists. New York City and the nation needed him at a time when we were trying to recover from the worst tragedy in the history of the U.S.A. and he was there for us.

5 out of 5 stars Music From and For the Heart.......2006-11-25

Daniel's album is music to be shared with family and with friends to help further ensure warmth, strong family ties, and love of our beautiful country. His voice is magical, skilled, rich and so memorable that it can take one on a journey from yesterday to promise for a bright tomorrow. This is a superb rendering of past unforgettable music. His solemn rendition of the peace song "God Bless America" is the album's centerpiece and truly unforgettable....

5 out of 5 stars Daniel Rodriguez.......2006-11-11

I first heard of Daniel Rodriguez a couple of months ago when he sang on Jay Leno's show. He was/is WONDERFUL! His voice is beautiful, but he sings from the heart, and that makes him exceptional.

4 out of 5 stars Some definite winners on this album.......2005-12-14

My favorites are "Ave Maria" and "The Lord's Prayer" where Daniel truly shows off his vocal talents. I could have done without the choir backup on "Ave Maria" but nonetheless a great rendition.

The ending that he has for the "The Lord's Prayer" almost brings a tear to my eye each time I hear it. Well done Daniel.

For three decades, Dianne Reeves has been one of the most popular vocalists, thanks to her well-produced recordings and engaging live shows. On this date, recorded before an audience of 300 fans, Reeves weaves her trademark, hornlike contralto over smooth grooves that cross over mainstream jazz, contemporary pop, and world-music lines. Her band, featuring keyboardist Otmaro Ruiz and Wynton Marsalis's bassist, Reginald Veal, delivers the Cat Stevens-associated church hymn "Morning Has Broken," Mongo Santamaria's classic "Afro-Blue," and Cole Porter's immortal "Love for Sale." She also pays homage to jazz's Brazilian roots with her splendid, spirited readings of Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Triste," a duet with guitarist Romero Lubambo, and Milton Nascimento's "Bridges." On her lyrical, midtempo "Come In," Reeves's cousin, keyboardist George Duke, turns in a brilliant solo, and "The First Five Chapters" is an autobiographical number inspired by author Portia Nelson. But the zenith of the set is "The Best Times (Grandma's Song)," her new version of her most requested song, "Better Days," which sings the praises and virtues of family values better than our politicians. --Eugene Holley Jr.

"Good evening ladies and gentlemen! How's everybody doing tonight? You're my guests and this is my living room!" Hearing this, you know you're in for a real treat and Dianne does not disappoint.
This is such a great live CD and Dianne's voice is so pure and clear. Every song is masterfully sung with beautiful twists and turns. The music is just awesome. My favorites are Suzanne, Afro Blue, and Morning Has Broken. Take this wonderful live journey with Dianne - sit back and enjoy. If you like this CD and you've never seen her live, you've got to check her out. The sista is BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD!

5 out of 5 stars At last, THE GRAMMY.......2001-05-23

This is the CD that made the world take notice. This is not her best body of work. She has giving loving fans better then this and never won a Grammy. This just tells you what a big talent the world has been missing. On studio recordings, Miss Reeves is above the game. Her live shows as this, can never be surpassed. I would love to see her make another live CD covering some of her other favorites. But, if you never saw her live shows this is a treat.

5 out of 5 stars just call her...DIANNE REEVES, M.D........2001-04-30

("M.D." in this case stands for musical doctor...) Those of us who have seen DR live know it is an experience unlike any other. Onstage, she makes her own rules and then breaks them-- seeming to constantly reinvent her songs/voice/ musical identity, all the while maintaining an intimacy with the audience that is as easeful as it is proufound/magical. I think that she does a number of very radical things with her music in general, and that her particularly radical style is exemplified by her performances on stage, and here in this album. When I say radical, I mean: somehow during the creative process of performing, she makes the radical choice to include the listener/audience over and over again EXPLICITLY in her creation. She has, I think, an innate and extremely rare understanding of the nexxus of human emotion and art (who else would dare put forth an album as raw and complex and contradicory as "Art and Survival'?) and is able to use her talent to make the final product far more than the sum of its parts. She goes beyond her role and status as an entertainer, giving medicine to her audience, medicine that lives on in the human heart long after the concert is over. Ironically, it's this, the most astounding aspect of her musicianship, that makes her most vulnerable to criticism. Most will agree on the dazzling voice, but: one reviewer of this album called "5 Chapters" "self-indulgent"; others have claimed she is too experimental and not a "true" jazz singer. I, myself, referred to some songs on "Bridges" as "didactic" (see review). It was listening to this live album that made it click: refrains "Testify" and "Mista" now are embedded in my consciousness, self-activating affirmation chants that I hold dear in times of spiritual/emotional crisis. These songs annoyed me when I first heard them! Now I understand what she's doing: disobeying the sacred unspoken tenet of the European sensibility, that says we must "show but not tell" in art. The tenet the enforces the division between the experience and the expression. In the live world with DR, there is no division: when she greets the audience, she's singing; when she introduces each and every member of the band, telling stories all the way [left out on this album :( ], she's singing; when she talks about her start in the music business, her love of singing, her family, her heart being broken, she's doing this singing-talking thing that as far as I know is completely original to her, at least to the extent that she does it. And the singing is beautiful, and the talking is interesting-- thus, again-- more than the sum of their parts: the synergy of her miraculous presence and talent. Unmatched. She's THE singer for this millenium. I'm running out of room here but the truth is that Dianne is the queen of jazz...and the doctor of our broken hearts. Let us praise her...

5 out of 5 stars The spirit of jazz.......2000-07-30

Once again Dianne Reeves demonstrates with her music she's one of a kind, one of the very few vocalist that relly say something new and, no matter what the critics say about her not focusing on pure jazz, SHE IS the perfect incarnation of what the spirits of jazz is: challenging the boundaries of music, pursuing freedom, improvisation, cultivating an exquisite taste with a sensibility that goes deep down into gospel, soul, r&b, afro, reggae to find a reveal new treasures. Above all this, naturally, stands her voice: warm, deep, rich in coulour and expression contralto,a voice guided by a sense of rythm and technical mastership going from moaning, caressing, soaring, roaring, culminating with an ability to scat that leaves you speechles. This time Diane's been caught in the rapture of a live performance, possibly her best dimension. She sing her heart out and kills you with a brilliant Brasilian trip: the acoustic reading of "Triste" is magnificient, matched by Nacimentos' "Bridges" that is already "the definitive cover" of this beautiful song. Then, she and her extraordinary band sweep you away with a salsa-latin flavoured "Love for sale" that will have even Cole Porter surely nodding with satisfaction from high above. What a voyage.. and then he comes George Duke playing the piano and dressing an old Dianne's hit "Come in" new, soulful and smooth and caressing and... beautiful... Each of the the songs of this superb set are simply stunning: a perfect collection to appreciate the art of Dianne Reeves, indeed. After her first, sensational "New Morning" live in Paris, this is the second chance to travel on the wings of real live jazz with one of the truest and best artists on the music scene today : when you're done, you just want to stand up and cry: Bravissima Dianne!

5 out of 5 stars Pure elegance of a songstress.......2000-07-19

Dianne Reeves has shown us once again why she is, indeed, this century's lady of song. Her rendition of Morning has Broken leaves open the simple yet intricate voicings of the instrumentation as her pure sound floats over the melody in an interpretation that could only be hers. Of special note and completely unique is her interpretation of "Travessia", called "Bridges", by Brazilian composer Milton Nascimento. This song was one of the first of his compositions that Milton ever performed live, but was well imprinted upon the minds of Brazilian fans by Elis Regina's passionately haunting rendition. Never before has so much justice been done to the bleedingly evocative cultural portrait that is Milton's music. The interpretation is reminiscent of Dianne's "Yemanja" off her "Quiet after the storm album". This album is a treasure for any distinctive collection. I'll stake my name to it.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great compilation.......2002-05-10

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2001-12-15

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

A search for Deep Purple's "Smoke on [in] the water," brought up this title. I rate it only #1 because I could not locate the "Smoke on the Water" listing. Amazon seems to be having an indexing problem.

We remember Rachmaninov today mostly for the music he wrote. But as this set quickly reveals, he was one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, able to play his own music and a great variety of others with tremendous personality and a technique that is still astonishing. There's no point picking highlights from this set, since they are everywhere. But if you've never heard Rachmaninov play Schumann's Carnaval, try starting there for one of the most imaginative recreations of a piece of music ever recorded. The set also includes Rachmaninov's only recordings as a conductor in two of his own major works. --Leslie Gerber

5 out of 5 stars Save some $ money! Get the newer January 2006 reissue set instead........2006-05-17

At the time of this review, whenever you search for a phrase such as "Rachmaninoff Complete", amazon's search engine always lands on this out-of-print recording (ASIN: B000003FB7) . It's also no fun to see that it costs more than a hundred bucks! But if you type "B000A2AD2S" in the search box, you'll see the new reissued set for half the price. It's the exact same 10 CDs. Just the cover art is different.

Unfortunately, this situation is a common pattern with amazon's listing of classical music: when you use your intuition and type in common-sense search phrases for Bach, Mozart, etc, you often get the ultra-expensive out-of-print ships-in-4-weeks items as the default item. It takes a lot of detective work to find the newer reissue recordings. For example, to find the new reissue without knowing the ASIN, I had to enter just "Rachmaninoff" in the search text (deliberately left the word "Complete" out of the search) so it would no longer lock me into this item page that you're looking at and give me a full listing instead. I then sorted the listing by "Original Release Date" and found it on the 2nd page. There's no picture on the new item which doesn't give you any confidence that you found the right one. Don't worry, B000A2AD2S is what you want.

For product research, it's good to have both ASIN product listings because the older out-of-print B000003FB7 has the sound samples (and also all the helpful customer reviews) while the new B000A2AD2S has the better price and availability.

To make things even more confusing, the amazon staff sometimes copies entire customer reviews to the new item which would then make THIS review seem strangely out of place. If that happens and I notice it, I will delete this review for B000003FB7.

(In another strange twist, amazon searches in rock/pop usually points you to the newer cheaper remastered/repackaged/reissued/whatever of a particular recording. I don't know why it works the opposite way in classical music?!?!)

5 out of 5 stars 6, or Even 7 Stars!.......2005-06-04

Hofmann hit the nail on the head when he said Rachmaninov had "arms of steel and heart of gold". From this album, we can have a clear picture of Rachmaninov's vison of music, of his musical mind and thoughts and moreover his own playing.

While Kempff's playing would often remind of the protestant church music, Rachmaninov bring to our mind the chanting of the Orthodox church, which is much thicker and darker. On top of that, his playing is orchestral which is so powerful and full colours. Yet, it is nothing like Richter, where often the whole piece is just one phrase.

Here each piece has it's own life and identity each with a focal point. It is water tight compact and yet very much natural and alive, never as hair-raising as Horowitz. But, it is not natural in Arrau's way. It is somewhere in between, closer to Argerich but with more consistency and depth. And like Casals' playing, it keeps our attention from the first note up to its focal point until its very end. But unlike Casals, he touches our hearts. It is very emotional but never to the point of being sentimental-- the performance of his own concertos, for example, can tell you that.

Sure, he did have fingers of steel that helped him to bring out whatever colour or atmostphere as appropriate. And despite that fact that there are some minor alterations on the scores like his Chopin, he is one of the few pianists who could really show you every note on the score counts and, above all, how it counts...

His Chopin may not be as neurotic as Cortot. Nonetheless, he sheds light on the dark and nervous side of Chopin so well: a very throbbing interpretation that is so unique. We also have him accompanying Kreisler on some violin sonatas, something that one could turn to time and again, year after year. What a great chamber musician and accompanist he was...!

The recorded sound of the CDs do vary, and some are more acceptable than the others. But for genuine music lovers, they should be able to get over this very soon: how else would they benefit from one of the greatest legacies of a genuinely great musician!

5 out of 5 stars A must have for Piano and classical music lovers.......2005-04-04

To respond to a review about the sound quality-for those people who have no experience with historical performances i.e cortot-hofmann-etc these discs are for the most part much better recorded. There are the inevitable pops and hisses but if these things disturb you, or you cant get past them, then you shouldnt be listening to this kind of thing anyway. the importance here is in the playing, and the playing is extra ordinary. I you want to buy a disc for the reperatoire then i can think of hundreds of performances that will satisfy, but only people with a true interest to hear and study these pieces will be beyond satisfied. I know that may not sound like a lot of fun, but these discs are fun, great, and for me, almost too good to be true. Again, if sound disturbs you, then you may be listening to the music for the wrong reasons. Take from it the playing, the revelations that Rach provides to his pieces, and how fortunate we are that it sounds as good as it does.

5 out of 5 stars Ah, Rachmaninoff, brilliant star of music, how we adore you.......2003-09-14

The music of Rachmaninoff is beyond words, furthermore, beyond imagination. He was a genius, no doubt, and nobody will ever understand how incredibly lucky we are to be blessed with his compositions. Furthermore, it is truly astonishing to hear Rachmaninoff play his own work. There is nothing so beautiful on this earth and there never will be.

4 out of 5 stars Review from a spoiled modern listener.......2003-07-13

I'll admit that I'm a spoiled modern listener, accustomed to having the bang and hiss edited out of a recording, and it took me a while to warm to these. Rachmaninoff's performances are splendid, but if you can hardly hear them over the cacophony of background noise, what's the use? His performance of his own, often overlooked Concerto No. 4 finally made me sit up and listen, even though I've owned two versions of this piece for a number of years (Ashkenazy & Wild).

5 out of 5 stars A Triumphant Free Spirit.......2001-11-09

Awadagin Pratt is a free spirit. Not only does he sport luxuriant dreadlocks and sit on a tiny stool, but he also played piano incredibly well. Pratt can do whatever he wants around the margins, because he rendered an intensely dramatic interpretation of these immortal pieces, with a distinctly improvisational air in the rhythms.

5 out of 5 stars Provocative and Beautiful.......2001-11-09

Mr. Pratt is an exceptional performer with a talent for stylizing within the most heatedly virtuosic material. His willful manipulation of tempos and dynamics, his varied articulation, as well as astonishing brilliance and energy, made for a provocative, electrifying performance.

5 out of 5 stars Superb!.......2001-11-08

Acclaimed pianist Awadagin Pratt, known for his unorthodox style -- he sits on a bench very low to the floor. He also eschews the traditional tuxedo in favor of brightly colored shirts and gives the old masters something beyond the standard treatment. However, it's his splendid performance that really counts. His astonishing brilliance and beauty, the romance and lyricism, the incredible technique and prodigious talent, and his superb and imaginative repertoire transport listeners, levitating them into a spiritual dimension, where materials are immaterial.

5 out of 5 stars Electrifying Performance.......2001-11-08

Award-winning pianist Awadagin Pratt plays with a full-bodied intensity that can be at turns intimate and grandly heart-wrenching. It's truly a electrifying performance.

1 out of 5 stars Tsk tsk.......2001-10-13

Sadly, after repeated examination, it indeed appears that the soon-to-be 36-year-old Pratt indeed splices his recordings--i.e., he takes the best individual moments he can come up with to achieve superficial result. Personally, I prefer "honest" classical musicians when I listen to classical, as is generally the standard, though I suppose there may be those who simply want to hear what they want to hear for whatever reason.

5 out of 5 stars Tureck: the supreme priest of Bach.......2004-05-28

Rosalyn Tureck belongs to a reduced kind of artists beyond the standard. She belongs to the elite of Casals, Carreno, Furtwangler, Busoni, Kempff, Neveu, Schnabel, Fricsay and Nykolayeva,Sandor Vegh, among others.
His playing on Bach is so natural and fresh that lets you amazed. And that is a syntom of her deep commitment with the score. Her Bach bretahes, the sonority is filled with dyonisiac rapture, and sounds human even erotic. And I'm not kidding with this last statement.
In this live recording, Tureck shows us her high pianism level. One of the fundamentals aspects of the genius is the overwhelming singleness of its playing. The notes are not forced, flow, simply.
Buy this issue. It is a gem for collectors.

I bought this mainly for the Handel Variations. It must be one of the most difficult things to play live. She gives it her all and comes up lacking. But her Bach is great as usual.

I agree with the reviewer about the Ax and the Cliburn Handel Variations. Worth owning both of them, but if you want THE superior reading get the Osorio on some budget label. The best.

Recorded August 19th, 2000 at the Téatro Colon in Buenos Aires, Daniel Barenboim's recital commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of his debut (at age seven) yields uneven results. In Beethoven's "Appassionata" Sonata, for instance, the pianist is below his best form. In contrast to his more controlled (and better engineered) DG recording, Barenboim forgoes the finale's essential repeat, and pounds his way through the coda with no pretense to subtlety. He swoons over Scarlatti's D Minor "Pastorale" sonata, and lays heavily into the C Major (K. 159) Sonata's dancing patterns. Mozart's K. 330 Sonata in the same key comes alive through Barenboim's witty, incisive way with the Finale. Following an iron-bound, charmless Schubert F Minor Moment musical, Barenboim positively sings out Schumann's Des Abends and the Chopin F Minor Etude and D-flat Nocturne. The Resta, Ginastera, and Villa-Lobos encores are played to the hilt, with all the idiomatic élan they deserve. --Jed Distler

    5 out of 5 stars A luminous recital.......2006-11-05

Barenboim never forgets his birth land. From time to time, he returns to give the best of his interpretative skills, but the big difference between and the rest of the keyboard players resides in his astonishing vision and well thought approach around the single or elemental piano work

Daniel illuminates the score due his directorial conception around the work; and as well as Ashkenazy, Perahia, Badura Skoda or Edwin Fisher this double vision nourishes and enriches the composition to play.

So, this is a very recommendable album to acquire. Barenboim in the peak of his powers giving the best of his craftsmanship.
