This is not the expected knockout from the renegade female drum & bass mixmaster, but it's still a fine display of versatility. On her major-label debut, DJ Rap (née British model Charissa Saverio) offers everything from dippy Madonna-style club tracks ("Bad Girl") and narcotic electro jams ("Fuck with Your Head") to icy instrumental scores ("Stories from Around the World"). But after fumbling through several indistinguishable dance cuts, she really hits her stride with the majestically orchestrated "Changes," a song that uses her beats and glamour to maximum effect. --Aidin Vaziri

5 out of 5 stars Beyond Drum and Bass.......2005-12-11

If you're looking for true drum and bass, check out Roni Size. But if you're searching for an album of more transcendental quality, this one is for you. DJ Rap uses some traditional D&B beats and merges them with beautiful melodies and sweeping synthesizers to create a truly unique techno experience. Her brilliant feminist and existential lyrics are inspiring. This girl is deep! Learning Curve will get under your skin and demand many repitions under the laser.

1 out of 5 stars um...this sucks.......2005-05-05

I love drum and bass and I heard that dj rap was supposed to be one of the best... after the reviews I thought I'd give it a try. I was very disappointed...I wouldn't even classify her music as drum and bass. When I got it, the sticker said trip-hop pop (not d&b). I never write reviews, but this one was just so bad, I had too.

5 out of 5 stars A fine intro to d&b for those who are just starting........2004-07-10

I bought this album 3 years ago, because I heard "Good To Be Alive" in the movie "Go", and loved it. So why not pick up the album it came from and see if there were any other good tracks? Well, after a few listens, I only liked the first two tracks, so I shelved it. A year later, I popped it back in. I realized how closed-minded I had been a year before, because the breakbeats on this album are SICK. Throw in a little Drum & Bass, and there you have it. This album still gets heavy play in my car stereo. I would highly recommend it for people who are looking for an intro to D&B, but are currently into hip-hop and breakbeats. This will ease you into the genre. The lyrics are almost sometimes laughable:
"I'm trying to show you that as friends we'd get along
Respect my body 'cos that's where you came from" - Bad Girl
.....Anyway, you get the picture. A couple of tracks don't really fit on this album, and you'll know which ones I'm talking about when you listen to it. But for people who just love BEATS, this album is golden. If you're the type who likes to roll around town and annoy people with your "Bassmobile", this is for you. Tracks like "F**k With Your Head" & "You Get Around" are perfect head-nodders for you guys. Hell, if you're a stripper, I'd recommend half the songs on this album to use for your routine.
But when it comes down to it all, this album is all about the beats, so I can't knock the lyrics, although some of the melodies are nice as well.
Excellent album, if you know what it was meant for - I just wish Rap would dabble more in breakbeat albums like this, instead of just sticking with the Jungle/D&B tip like she does.

5 out of 5 stars DJ Rap Knows Her Beats.......2004-03-16

DJ Rap knows here beats. A friend of mine gave me this album as a b-day gift and I loved every track. I even purchased another copy so I have one in the house and one in the car. DJ Rap's Learning Curve is one of top ten best album to listen to, in my opinion. If you are a techno fan, it is definitely worth hearing.

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as it shoulda, coulda been..........2004-02-24

I know that it takes talent to make music, and I hate to criticize any musicians because I certainly couldn't do it, but this CD was just not that good. There are some cool beats, but they're pretty forgettable. Lyrics in electronic music aren't always deep or anything, but in some cases, I think she actually was trying to make a "real song", so it was kind of sad. Her vocals are Madonna-esque, without the smooth production. Maybe she just didn't quite live up to the hype. I'm beginning to think that most female djs "make it" just because of the novelty of female djs. There was nothing to HATE, but there certainly wasn't anything to love, either.

5 out of 5 stars dj rap's learning curve.......2000-06-24

in learning curve DJ rap (charissa saverino) mixes the hard beats of techno with the angelic sounds of her voice. such tracks are number 2,number 5, everday girl. as soon as you change the track you are brought into heavy beats, extreme bass, heavy lyrics such as number 1 bad girl, number 3 F**k with your brain, which are no angelic lyrics. then to close the album...you have ordinary day which is teaching people to change there ways and for the world to change. five stars definetly.(this is my opinion and does not effect anything, please respect my opinion.)

Since seeing Michael Heaton live a few times, it is tough not to play this over and over. "If It's So Easy" and "So Hear We Are" are my favorites. In a world over over-produced pop, the energy and authenticity of this music is very refreshing!

5 out of 5 stars I've worn a few of them out already!!!.......2002-11-16

After knowing Mike and the band for about 2 years now and seeing them perform all over the place, it is safe to say that this CD has become a part of my life (thanks Mike). Hearing his music only puts me in a good mood, and it's one of those that when a certain song starts, I think, "I remember when...." and I have to laugh. I'd love to see Mike and the guys continue with their successes, although that's not a hard one to predict. Great CD!

      5 out of 5 stars Impressive.......2001-07-03

This is a great CD. I heard these guys live at a local club after ingesting a decent amount of alcohol and thought they really rocked. Bought a CD that night to see if there music came across as energetic as it did live. Remembered that I had bought CD a week later and decided to pop it in with low expectations. I haven't taken it out of the CD changer yet since that first listening. Great lyrics, great melody....it won't be long until Michael's Americana sound is on the radio across America. I'm afraid I'm turning into a Groupie.

5 out of 5 stars Sincere and hard hitting.......2000-09-06

Awesome lyrics and riffs that move you. Michael has put together a great disk here. I'm no music reviewer, but I know good music when I hear it. I've turned on a bunch on friends to this guy and the conclusion is unanimous: this guy rocks. You can feel his energy and passion. His sense of humor is evident, but you know he's talking about some serious stuff. I just wanted to hear the story about the chick that lit his guitar on fire. Now that's pretty harsh. Buy the disk.

      5 out of 5 stars awesome.......2000-08-02

This disk is incredible. This is pure songwriting at its best. I gaurantee the songs "If It's So Easy" and "Gasoline" will stick in your head for days. Hooks on top of hooks. Original and very impressive. This guy is for real.

From what I understand, music from this CD has already been enjoyed by over 2000 people in 7 countries. And it's obvious why: this is probably one of the best CDs that I have ever heard. I have been handing out copies of Welcome to the Learning Curve as gifts to my friends. I love the way the instruments blend together in perfect harmony. Jason's Fireplace moves me. Of course the other songs are equally good. Everyone should buy this CD. It perfectly represents the "Milwaukee sound."
