Founded by guitarist/songwriter Greg Ginn, Black Flag exploded out of L.A. in 1981 with a debut album so confrontational that MCA Records refused to release it, stating that Black Flag was "immoral" and lacking "redeeming social value." When the album finally came out on Ginn's own SST label, it was clear why MCA recoiled, as Black Flag's skinhead look and hardcore sound signaled a new chapter in punk--and rock in general. With Henry Rollins's venom-dripping vocals leading the way, the album features such hostile teeth-gnashers as "Rise Above" ("Try to stop us/It's no use"), "Six Pack" ("I got a six pack, and nothing to do"), and, of course, "Life of Pain." --Billy Altman

5 out of 5 stars Beyond essential.......2007-03-05

I haven't heard every rock 'n' roll record ever made, but if there was anything angrier committed to vinyl before "Damaged," I haven't come across it.

And if you can't relate to "Depression" in some moments of your life, you're not human, or you're lying to yourself. It's the best song on the album, I think. "Depression's got ahold of me/Depression, gotta break free/Depression's got ahold of me/Depression, it's gonna kill me" -- Been there, felt that, bought the T-shirt.

A few notes --

The guitar tones from Greg Ginn and Dez Cadena sound like they're literally exploding from the speakers, so untamed they make virtually all the early '80s metal axemeisters sound tea-party polite, tone-wise. (Okay, maybe not Eddie Van Halen, but he's a special case).

Cadena had taken over on second guitar (abdicating the lead-vocalist role to Henry Rollins) only a short time before this album was recorded -- it doesn't sound that way. Too bad they didn't stick with the twin-guitar line-up longer.

Rollins joined the band only a short time before the album was recorded -- he was obviously a quick study, and sounds like rage incarnate. But note that the lyrics were all written by Greg Ginn and/or bassist Chuck Dukowski -- only the improv vox on "Damaged I" present Rollins' own words.

Astute old-school metal fans will notice snatches of what appear to be Black Sabbath and AC/DC rhythm riffs here and there -- not a complaint, just historical perspective, and I don't know if Ginn did this deliberately.

Also, you'll notice Ginn and Cadena soloing all over the place. It's funny that the uninformed consider hardcore punk to be pretty much bereft of guitar solos. Not these guys. But it's always careening, reckless stuff, not studied showing-off.

5 out of 5 stars All hype aside..........2006-12-13

This albums rocks. Nothing is more brutal than Black Flag when fronted by Rollins. In my opinion, this was Black Flag at their punk best. Not much can be said about this album that hasn't already been said. I highly reccomend anyone even slightly interested in getting into hardcore get this album, it's a rush from start to finish.

4 out of 5 stars Stop bashing Rollins...........2006-10-14

Okay, first of all this is a good album period-its a change of sound from their previous years, but still it's a good album. I'm not going to choose a side for Black Flag-Morris vs Rollins because Morris rocks hard and Rollins rocks hard. However, I can see how some people don't like their aggressive more hardcore and angry sound found on this album and prefer their less instense more just plain punk theme of Keith Morris Black Flag has and vice versa. In conclusion, if you enjoy a more heavier, angry, twisted, and hardcore sound in your punk buy Damaged. And if you prefer a less intense and more straight up old school punk buy The First four years.

5 out of 5 stars Howling Madness.......2006-10-05

This is arguably the very first Hardcore band. They played for years before this debut, (earlier stuff is on "the First Four Years") but this in my opinion is their crowning achievement.

If it weren't for Black Flag, we would probably not have the Meat Puppets, the Minutemen, Sonic Youth, and a million other Hardcore and post-punk bands. They were one of the most influential punk bands in history, right up there with the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, and Crass, and for good reason too. With Gregg Ginn's distortioned out guitars, Henry Rollin's snarled lyrics that are more blurted out than sung, and the rest of the band providing an adequate, propulsive rhythm section, this band was an abrasive, angry, in your face LA Hardcore outfit, that out did the vast majority of their peers. This album really isnt so much as a collection of random songs, as it is almost a concept album: a concept album about being an angry, depressed, mentally unstable criminal drunk who hates cops. Unlike other Hardcore bands like Minor Threat or Youth Brigade, Black Flag never preached: instead they glorified getting drunk, spitting at the cops, and vandalism. The anger in this album seems pretty genuine to me. A lot of people have a problem with Henry Rollin's vocals. While I admit that they are not quite as good or "punk sounding" as Keith Morris, the original singer, I like them. Listen to this album and you will realize why the cops hated this band.

5 out of 5 stars Thirsty and Miserable.......2006-09-27

Thirsty and Miserable is one of the greatest hardcore punk songs ever written.

5 out of 5 stars The Funniest Ever.......2006-08-25

This is the funniest stand up performance of all time by the funniest man of all time. The subject matter is varried and clean. Check it out.

5 out of 5 stars Clean Humor.......2003-01-21

It is unfortunate that this is Sinbad's only comedy CD, especially since he's done several HBO specials. Sinbad's brand of comedy is clean and many will find it extremely funny. This CD deals with things like Mike Tyson as a substitute teacher, spanking your kids, children in general, and more. The songs included didn't do anything for me, but that's just me.

Bottom line: a worthy addition to any comedy collection!

5 out of 5 stars Keepin It Clean.......2002-06-27

I perfer the HBO special that he had and if it ever gets back out on video/dvd I will get it.

5 out of 5 stars Sinbad:Funny As Ever.......2000-06-13

I have always been a fan of Sinbad's comedy and humor. I was a little bit worried purchasing this CD though. Sinbad was great in his concerts and movies, but I was afraid his humor would not transfer to audio means.

I was not disappointed! Hearing Sinbad is almost as good as seeing him. His humor is so great, because he does not have to be vulgar to be funny. The CD is full of original as well as concert material. Sinbad even performs a rap song on marriage called "Brain Damaged". If you love Sinbad, you will definitely love this CD...

New York City's Blonde Redhead developed a reputation as Sonic Youth imitators, because their sound originally depended on the same discordant guitar points and sexless machinelike rhythms. But over the course of five albums, they've grown out of that heady shadow. Incorporating sinister keyboards, conventional melodic guitar lines, and a stronger grasp of songwriting ("Melody of Certain Three," among others, is hummable), Blonde Redhead is emerging from the underground rock world with a sound that mixes dissonant alt-rock ("For the Damaged") with space-age pop grace ("Ballad of Lemons") and orchestral ambitions ("Loved Despite Great Faults"). Mixed louder than the usual indie release, the atmospheric lead vocals of Kazu Makino bring the imagistic lyrics to the fore. "Hated Because of Great Qualities" builds into a teetering seesaw of notes while Makino admits, "It never meant a thing. So be it," with Godardian detachment. Definitely one of the more noteworthy bands that have slowly been growing into a diverse and formidable act. --Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars After 5 years.........2007-06-30

.. Of friends and strangers recommending i listen to BRH i finally was casually forced into listening to this album.. start to finish. And let me just say, i was moved. I've heard one or two songs of theirs before but thought nothing of it, however while listening to this album on the way back from a weekend beach vacation, completely relaxed and happy, i couldn't believe how fantastic it was. I rushed out and bought it for myself less than a week later and i'm in love. This album is constucted so beautifully, so poetically.. It's magic. I'm overwhelmed with it's composition and melody. BUY THIS ALBUM. nowww!!

5 out of 5 stars Unlike any album youve bought this year........2007-01-08

You will not regret buying this album. From the first song to the last youll be caught up in Kazu's voice or entraced my the melody. No song is like the other on this cd, making every song unique and beautiful. My favorite song on this cd is A Cure by far, but not far behind In Particular and melody of certain three.

5 out of 5 stars Best Album i've heard in a long time........2006-11-15

Buy it. You won't regret it. This is what music should be.

Melody of certain three is priceless (track 3).

5 out of 5 stars Amazing album.......2005-08-30

Most bands write songs. With Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons, Blonde Redhead wrote and album. All the songs were masterfully put together. When you sit down to listen to this album, the songs blend in, creating juxtoposition or accentuating the previous song's great qualities. Kazu Makino's voice is hypnotic, a voice that can easily be compared to Thom Yorke's. The solitary piano in "mother" is intricately laced with her voice, and produces a great ending to the album. An amazing must have, music came back to life for me when i heard this album. Captivating from start to finish, you will not regret purchasing this album.

5 out of 5 stars A rare beauty.......2004-01-09

I bought my first album ("Court of the Crimson King") back in 1969. I have collected well over a thousand records and CD's since then, but few have affected me as much as this one has. This CD has an ethereal beauty which is difficult to describe; the vocals and music merge seamlessly to create some magic! Do yourself a favor and buy this.

5 out of 5 stars I Love This Girl!.......2007-01-05

If you don't know her go see her in person. Lennon puts all into her performances and always makes time for fans. A couple songs here were remixed but over all her best yet. Lennon Rocks!

5 out of 5 stars awesome!!!!.......2006-11-30

i am one of lennon's biggest fans, i can honestly say that she is my favorite artist! i own all of her cds, and this new release along with 5:30 saturday morning are the best. i have to say that the version of "my beautiful" off the 5:30 saturday morning album is the best version of the song.

'nobody knows' is a great song. as the rest of the songs on the album. i recommend this album to anybody! great piece of work from lennon...

4 out of 5 stars A great album but..........2006-11-13

I have to agree with previous reviewers, while "My Beautiful" is an amazing song, I kinda wish Lennon would stop remaking it. I have literally 4 versions of it now. The one on this cd renamed "Where Do I fit In?", a live accoustic I found on the internet (really pretty if you can find it), a duet with Travis Meeks off of her import "I Am", and the original on "5:30 am". I think I'm in the minority though; I prefer the "I Am" version, the addition of a male counterpart does add to it in my opinion and the guitar sounds better. Also, there is a different version of "No One Knows" on "I Am" that in my opinion, is much better. I love that song and I believe the reworked version on this album is missing something.

All that aside, I think it is a great album and I hope Lennon has more to come. If only she'd do a show near me so I could see her live.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing follow up........2006-11-02

I was a little worried about buying this CD because it has been a while since I have heard anything new from Lennon. I didn`t know what I was going to expect, but when I put this CD in the player, I was blown away. I drove around the town just listening to this CD. In all honestly, I haven`t listened to anything else since I bought this CD. I loved 5:30 Saturday Morning, and I think that Lennon has progressed a lot since that CD. I can`t pick just one song as my favorite. This CD is amazing from start to finish. If people are new to Lennon, this would be a great CD to start with.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome back, Ms. Murphy.......2006-10-25

I was a fan of her first cd and I also liked "Commerical Suicide" but I kinda lost track of her until last week when I was at a cd store and I happened to see a new cd by her. I was interested in hearing her new songs so I picked it up and I must say that I enjoyed it. The years since 5:30 came out when she toured on her own as well as opened for the likes of Alice Cooper and Heart have paid off. Her vocals seem stronger than on 5:30. You can feel the emotion and you know she means everything she sings and she's able to covey that feeling with her voice without overdoing it like some other piano playing female fronting a hard rock band(not naming names). I'm glad to see Lennon still around and kicking it. And I'll try not to lose track again.

Album Description

Their tenth full-length is yet another stunning collection of songs written by Kurt Wagner and brought to life by up to seventeen band members and collaborators. Eschewing the overt country influences of early Lambchop records and the R&B and soul influences of mid-period albums for a hushed austerity that is uniquely southern yet oddly universal, "Damaged" continues in the quiet and haunting tradition pioneered on the past three Lambchop albums ("Is A Woman", "Aw C'mon", and "No You C'mon").

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Less idiosyncratic Lambchop = a superb release.......2006-09-13

Damaged only has 10 songs, but the result is the first Lambchop release that you actually wish didn't end so soon. Previous CDs have tended to be overlong, bordering on tediousness and somewhat same-sounding. Don't misunderstand me, their back catalog is impressive and Lambchop is a great, unique band, but it can be a chore to listen to many of their full length releases from start to finish. Not this one.

A sense of sadness permeates this release. Kurt Wagner's lyrics are more direct, more personnel, easier to decipher. In spite of his recent sickness this is easily his best vocal performance to date. The music is also less eccentric, more straightforward. Wagner's orchestration skills are accomplished. I'm glad to report that after last year's overambitious and overly pristine double album Lambchop is making the best music of its career.

If you've never heard Lambchop, this is as good a place to start as any.

5 out of 5 stars Lambchop's latest masterpiece.......2006-08-25

It may take a few listens, but Lambchop's new album soon reveals it's true worth.

Damaged is a beautiful, understated set of string-laden pop songs capable of blissfully taking you higher, whilst also quietly shaking the very foundations of your existence. Does that description sound a little overdramatic? Let me assure you - it's not. Even by Kurt Wagner's high songwriting standards, this really is masterful stuff. At 10 songs (48 minutes), Damaged is relatively concise for a Lambchop record, and yet the songs themselves almost audibly breathe, such is their unhurried, elegant nature.

This time out, Kurt Wagner's songwriting output has taken on a greater sense of urgency, depth and focus. Understandable, given that the Lambchop frontman had to have a piece of his jaw removed after discovering a bitterly hostile cyst, and shortly thereafter survived another serious brush with cancer. It's still a subtle shift, but compared with past Lambchop releases, the lyrical content of Damaged feels like it's less about the external influences surrounding Kurt Wagner and more about the songwriters own mind and body. Observations on mortality, identity, sex, and loneliness feature heavily. In the past I've tended to get the gist of what Kurt Wagner is saying rather than the exact translation and I've tended to feel Lambchop's music more than I do understand it. For me, Damaged is the first Lambchop record in which the words, as well as the typically wondrous music, really do, consistently, strike a chord.

Listening to Damage is like that tingling feeling you get when sudden warm currents of air flow soothingly around your skin on an otherwise crisp autumn day. Poignant, evocative, and surprisingly pleasurable - and for one unexpected moment a nice reminder of how good it is to be living.

4 out of 5 stars Very very good.......2003-09-27

Very good album, my favorite is track 5-very upbeat. In whole the rest of the album is very good, too, but I think some of her stuff with Billy Childish might be better-it seemed very hynotic, but still check out her new album!!!!

4 out of 5 stars 60's Soul With Punk Attitude.......2003-08-27

I have heard Holly Golightly tunes before and rather enjoyed them. The new album is a remarkable throwback to 60's soul. While Ms. Golightly's vocals are thin, there is an underlying edge to them...almost as if a smokey aura of experience are behind her words. Musically, the album's first half has an enjoyable groove. Be assured that you will be moving and shaking during the first half. By album's end, we find the music more subdued but not without intensity.

I played this album at a party and everyone raved about the album's sound. Simply described by a friend: Did Dusty Springfield and Phil Spector have a love child? HA!

If you are tired of the rubbish that's infecting our airways and our charts, by all means pick this album up! If you disagree, I will personally apologize for your wasted time! Rarely, I find myself excited enough by an album to tell everyone. In 2003, this is that album!!

5 out of 5 stars RIB comes of age...........2006-11-12

After hearing a song from RIB recently, I found and purchased Damaged and immediately was floored. Coming from a background of metal RIB was my first Goth/Industrial/Dance crossover album and since has set the mark by which I measure all other albums. The mix of aggression and beauty is something most other artists in the genre can only wish for. I quickly went out and bought Shrieks but was fairly disappointed with it. It seemed as if Romell's songwriting skills have matured and he now has the knack for immediately hooking the listener and not releasing them! There really isn't a standout track on this album--the whole thing is incredible. If you are looking for something with a driving beat that doesn't ever get monotonous, PLEASE do yourself a favor and pick up Damaged!!!

4 out of 5 stars Nowhere near as good as Sacrificed.......2005-06-16

I bought this album the day it came out and I have listened to it over the last two years. Well, I have to say that this album is not as appealing as Sacrificed, which had more of an organic sound to it with the guitars and beats and such. To me Damaged is almost too techno for me. I loved Razed In Black for the heavy guitars, the angry vocals, and the dark evil lyrics. Damaged is more tame in terms of the music style it portrays, even the guitars sound like a keyboard effect, and there is very few on here. He definitley sings more on this release and is way more melodic, and mellow and dare I say...more accessible. But I'm not mad that the album is this way. Romell is a D.J. above all and his first love is obviously electronica, which makes this albums programming stellar. The only reason that I am disappointed in the end is that I wanted another heavy album and this album is not heavy, unless you count the non-stop bass drum. Even Shrieks, Laments, and Anguished Cries is better than Damaged, and I think that album was pretty boring too. I am not a fan of straight up techno, which is what most of this album is, so it will collect more dust than all my other cds thats for sure. Stick with Sacrificed...its flawless and the only one you need. Remember, this is just a personal opinion....if you like techno I do totally recommend this.

4 out of 5 stars Razed the Roof.......2005-04-11

RiB was a welcome discovery for me. I was trying to find something less like NIN and the other (what I call) "pop" industrial groups out there. I wanted something faster, a little more dance-ish. RiB delivered.

The album revs-up slowly enough that you can, quite literally, work-out to it (and I have, on occasion). The BPMs hover in the vicinity of 120 (bottoms-out at 90 and top-ends at near 160, near as I can figure), the drum sequences are masterfully done, and all the elements blend to make a superb listening experience.

So why the four stars? Profanity. For some people it's no big deal, but it bugs me to no end; especially in my music. RiB could've nailed down five stars if it weren't for the bad language. I'm tempted to go song-by-song, but that's overkill.

If you're looking for "industrial" that's going to have a good, strong dance beat and enough melody to separate it from speed-metal, then RiB is your band.

5 out of 5 stars You must buy this album or i will kill you!.......2005-03-27

This album is fantastic. I would play this album over, and over again until its so old, i would make a hooker's fanny look unused. Anyhow its a must have album and if you don't buy this album, well, huh, you must have the I.Q. of a carrot!!

5 out of 5 stars The best industrial album of 2003.......2004-10-18

Razed in black have always taken a bit of a different approach to industrial music. They used to be a little on the harsh side, with crunchy speed-metal style guitars and lots of screeching bleeping synth noises that kind of layered and formed a backdrop. The beats have always been fabulous and the lyrics, though quite disturbing, are intelligent and poetic. One of the most innovative bands to come into the electro scene in years. Then along comes Damaged. This is a little more on the poppy side of things, but only because the production quality is much better than on previous albums. You can hear the influence of the multitude of different groups in the genre that helped write and produce this album. The beats are infectious, the lyrics are tantilizing. This is a club-rave frenzy in a box. I have never heard anything quite like it and expect I never will again, unless R.I.B out-do themselves whith their NEXT album. A must have for anyone who likes Dance electronica/ industrial/ trance and the like. The remix disc is also pretty good, though I like most of the originals better, the remixes are different enough to make the second cd an entity of its own.

4 out of 5 stars Good introduction for first time Holly listeners.......2005-11-16

I wouldn't normally review a greatest hits album, because naturally they are good. If you haven't heard Holly Golightly before then this compilation of hits would be a good introduction. She is quite unique in her genre of music. Very few Women have been successful when it comes to writing and recording hard electric blues. But Holly's light gravely voice suits the style wonderfully.

With ten albums under her belt she has a huge selection of songs to pick from, spanning ten years of hard work. The tracks here show how her sound has evolved, from bluesy garage rock through to alt-country blues, with the odd folk song in between. They run together on this disc beautifully and before long you will be singing along.

This is great as an introduction, but I would recommend buying one of her studio albums.
