About the Artist
A brilliant, poetic singer/songwriter, his work displayed a deep spirituality and an honesty to the human condition uncommon in CCM. Heard died in 1992 of heart failure. Home Sweet Home Records is grateful to have produced eight recordings of Mark, mainly thru the mid-80's. As any who knew him or have listened to his music will tell you, Mark Heard was truly a treasure in a broken land. He stands not only as one of the most brilliant and profound songwriters for almost twenty years, but also as a man of great personal integrity.

Just great stuff.......2002-11-15

This is one of the best records I've ever owned. There is a very folky sound to the music, and the lyrics are beautiful. "Washed to the Sea" is sad and triumphant at the same time. The sound is different from most of Mark Heard's other records, which to me sound kind of harsh, almost dissonant. This is just really good folk/gospel music.

Valuable effort.......2005-10-14

This album is pretty great. Sure, it's obscure, and it's not very similar to The Standard (Loch Lomond is a side-project of them), but it's still very good. Not every song is spectacular; some are a bit boring, and it's all very morose, which can be a good or bad thing depending on your tastes. I've heard some stuff from their next album, though, and it looks extremely promising. Check out their website www.lochlomondmusic.com the members of the band are good guys, I sent them an email and they personally responded (with genuine interest). I think they have a grand amount of potential, worth looking into.

More unique indie goodness from the Northwest..........2004-01-15

Mesmerizing songs... Dig this A LOT. Violins, cellos, female vocals, intricate keyboard parts and very inventive production. Unlike anything I've heard in a while. Apparently, it's the side project of another stellar NW band, The Standard. Check them out as well... Still this is a great CD and worth hearing as much as anything I've heard in a great while.

Against all odds!.......2006-03-24

Mark Heard had just finished 'Victims Of The Age' when he was told by his label that his new album wasn't accepted for immediate publication. After the success of 'Eye Of The Storm' the label was looking for more accoustic material. Since there was to be an important business meeting in about a fortnight, Mark was asked to record another album in this very short time period. That's what he did, and 'Ashes and Light' is the outcome of that enterprise: a masterpiece! Yes, he did it! The business is hard sometimes, and if it wasn't, maybe Mark Heard would still be among us!

Undiscovered Masterpiece.......2005-10-27

This album gets my vote for the greatest work that will be heard by almost no one. It stands among my favorite artists' best work, alongside great singer/songwriter albums by Bruce Cockburn, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Over The Rhine. I would also classify this as my favorite cd on a mainstream Christial label. It took some guts on the part of Chris Christian, the head of Home Sweet Home Records, to release a work like this. It is a dark album that evokes the dichotomy between our fallen nature and God's grace. The songs are all excellent and the lyrics are profound. More people should hear this.

God's Love, Our Pain And Sin .......2005-05-17

This CD is one of my favorites: high quality acoustic-electric rock with traditional American music accents and some subtle, tastefully applied special effects, too, all of which blend beautifully. Lyrically, it mixes insightful portraits of our sin and pain with joy and hope in the grace of God and Jesus' promise to restore creation. If you like classic pop-rock, I think the chances are good that you will enjoy it.
