About the Artist
SNAG is the brainchild of guitarist/vocalist Don Townsley and

drummer/percussionist/vocalist Steve Ritter. Both musicians began performing while still in elementary school, Don in Dallas and Steve in Oklahoma where his father and uncles had been lifelong musicians. In the late 70s Don worked in popular all original bands including "Lightning" and Austin-based "Too Smooth" and in several local cover bands. About the same time, Steve graduated from college and moved to Dallas to pursue his musical career, playing with the bands "Caf" and "Triple Play" and doing studio commercial work. Later his songwriting and performance efforts earned him the distinction of being named one of the Ten Best Unsigned Acts in America by Musician Magazine. In 1986 Don and Steve met when they both joined the show band "Custom Made". They worked together on several projects over the next 14 years, including forming the "Isle of Lucy" band to showcase their original tunes. It was at this time that lyricist Mimi Ryan Balkey began her collaboration with Don and Steve. Mimi was a singer who worked with Steve in his band "Triple Play". She contributed lyrics to the Isle of Lucy project and continues that contribution with SNAG. In 1987 Dons son Max Townsley was born. By the time the SNAG project was underway, Max had developed into a very talented bassist and guitarist. His talents are highlighted in his original composition "The First to Know", for which he plays bass and all guitar parts.

The Huey Smith Band led two of the biggest hits of the `50s rock era with "Don't Ya Just Know It" and "Rockin' Pneumonia," but equally worthy are these 1960 recordings for Imperial under Dave Bartholomew, the architect of Fats Domino's classic sound. The result is a vat full of gumbo New Orleans rhythms filled with Coasters-style comedy vocals and superb piano from maestro Smith.

great CD showcasing the varied talents of a true jazz star.......2005-10-23

Franz Jackson is one of jazz most under rated musicians, and a true orginial. He was born in November 1912, started in the music business in the late 1920's with Francois Mousley's band (with Punch Miller, the band sans Franz recorded in 1930 under "Frankie Franko"), played with swing greats Fletcher Henderson (replacing Ben Webster), Earl Hines, Roy Eldridge, Frankie Newton and Fats Waller (to only name a few), did USO shows (ended up as far as Finland at one point in 1947), recorded numerous sessions as far back as 1933 (starting with forgotten trumpet great Reuben Reeves in 1933), and also made arrangements for numerous name bands (besides Hines, and Eldridge, he arranged for Cootie Williams, the Bascomb Brothers orchestra, Lucky Millinder and many others). In the 1950's (after subbing for an ill George Lewis during a tour of the Lewis band in 1956), he decides to start up a trad jazz ensemble that featured many of the classic musicians from the 1920's (Bob Schoffner, Al Wynn, Little Brother Montgomery and many other greats), and made numerous LP's with this band. This CD presents him with a band he was playing with a lot during the latter half of the 1980's (shortly after recording a swing album for his own label, and particpating in some recordings with the author of this review recently reissued by Delmark), led by fine trombonist Jim Beebe and featuring besides Franz, wonderful piano by the late Joe Johnson (who died earlier this year, and was critically under rated in his career) and some fine trumpet by Bob Neighbor (why doesn't he have a CD out under his name?). Franz goes through various aspects of his career in this CD (both New Orleans standards like "Snag It", swingers like "Through For The Night", Cab Calloway's "Minnie The Moocher" and even a touch of jump blues "Huff And Puff"), and there is nary a dull moment on this CD. A great CD by a great musician and an even greater man who has helped many of us in our music careers (and do check out some of the great recordings Franz made with his band with Bob Schoffner, that was a great Chicago jazz band, now only could someone find the tapes of live performances with Jabbo Smith and Preston Jackson from the early 1980's, there was a band I will never forget!) If your an underground fan this alblum is for you. The lead guitar is awesome, fast and furious riffs John Grosso is one of the most talented artists in uderground scene today. The only thing I didnt like was the lead singer,on some tracks he tries to rap when he can't. Wsou, #1 College Hard Rock Station

Every hybrid rock indie CD has its own atmosphere and signature sound. The beauty of these things is that they convey the vision of the artists without the conforming influence of producers, marketing departments and record company executives.

This freedom can allow artists to do either good or bad. Every indie release is in a sense a "vanity record", a statement of the artists' sensibilities expressed in a relative vacuum.

SNAG's debut CD reflects the huge breadth of Don Townsley's and Steve Ritter's experience, developed from their careers in Custom Made, a highly successful corporate show band that performs faithful renditions of hundreds of pop and rock classics and current hits.

As such, SNAG is not a rough or crude sounding band, but rather a sophisticated and eclectic blend of proven sounds and approaches. These guys are good at what they do. They not only know what other peoples' hit records sound like, they actually play these songs night after night.

SNAG's CD therefore does not break new ground in the sense that a Dylan or Hendrix broke new ground. Rather it fits the context of pop music history faithfully and respectfully. These songs are not troubling or difficult. They are accessible and understandable. They rock. Townsley can play the bejesus out of an electric guitar, and he offers many different sounds and styles with an easy expertise. Likewise, Ritter is a consummate rock drummer, laying down grooves with an almost nonchalant ease.

The result is a record that plays well at a party, while also offering, on a close listening, a lot of fascinating nuance. SNAG is a fun record made by some real pros. The large contribution of Don's 13 year old son Max adds not only a warm family vibe to the tracks, but Max's bass and guitar playing stands on its own as amazingly professional work. I like SNAG!

This whole CD makes me feel like I'm listening to a group of people that have a gift...a rare gift. This "SNAG" CD has the uncanny ability to combine Pure Raw Rock and Roll with Vocal haromnies and Lyrics that stick in your head. I find myself trying to sing along, even when I'm not listening to it! I'm talkin' "Road Trip" great! Pop it in and the long trip is over before you know it. The performance? These guys are as tight and clean as I've ever heard! The Production? Award winning!

I'm Thinking...this kind of quality can only come from big time talent and years of experience. Then I find out that Max Townsley, was born in 1987! Do the math! He plays bass on the whole CD? He wrote , arranged and performed all musical parts (bass and guitars) on "First to Know"? I was right about the big time talent, but my years of experience theory...Well; my newest guitar is older than that! There is hope for the future! Unbelievable, hats off Mr. Townsley!

I'm truly looking forward to the next SNAG CD. This stuff really got my blood pumping!
