If storytelling and oral history often seem like endangered species in a culture dominated by disposable infotainment, NPR host Ira Glass could be seen as something of a preservationist, his low-key passion for the magic moments that inform everyday life the driving force behind his successful This American Life radio series. This second series anthology culls its 10 stories onto two discs loosely centered around notions of "Crimebusters" and "Crossed Wires." And while professional writers like Sarah Vowell and David Sedaris (whose bemused take on nationality-diverse French class attempting to explain their various impressions of Easter is characterized by mounting, masterfully constructed hilarity) participate, they are hard-pressed to better the tales of everyday people that are the collection's de facto focal points: a rookie cop's efforts at corralling a household-invading squirrel turning into chaotic slapstick worthy of Sellers or Benigni; a Beverly Hills teen and his father making war, then peace over a spiraling drug problem; Starlee Kline and Mekons founder Jon Langford forming a band of strangers solely through classified ads. Less enamored of their own voices and ideas, those tales of "everyday people" are the collection's true treasures. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

Crimebusters and Crossed Wires is a collection of ten stories, with true tales of (sometimes hapless) crimefighters and investigators of all sorts on one CD, and real-life adventures in miscommunication on the other.

From a bungling, squirrel-chasing cop who burns, bloodies, and tears apart a new house in pursuit of the rogue rodent, to a father who resorts to tapping his drug-using teen's phone, Crimebusters and Crossed Wires offers comical and poignant insight. Among the storytellers featured are best-selling writers David Sedaris and Sarah Vowell.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the best This American Life ever.......2007-05-07

Contains Squirrel Cop which is the stuff of urban legends.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious! Wonderful!.......2007-01-20

I have listened to this over and over. It's so funny. I absolutely love it!
PS
Don't take this to the gym with you because you won't be able to do any exercise from laughing so hard.

5 out of 5 stars Truly the best of TAM!.......2005-12-19

I am a regular and avid listener of This American Life (TAM) and have loved Squirrel Cop since I first heard it on the radio. Then when they paired that amazing, anonymous confession of rookie cop bravado with the equally hilarious essay of language barriers by David Sedaris...I knew I had to have this CD set.

Since receiving them, I have listened to all the stories several times (and a few range into dozens of times). Each and every story is worth listening to more than once. The son and father who work out a drug problem by simple "spying on your kid", the lessons learned by being a band geek, and the newest, greatest party/dinner question of all time - it's a collection of stories that are diverse yet centric to life as a 21st century human.

The stories never get old, as I find more in them each time I listen, like petals opening in a blooming flower. I play them while I travel, at work in my office, at home while cleaning and for anyone who has never heard of TAM.

It has now become a topic of office discussion and I've had to buy more copies to give as gifts. In fact, at a recent gift exchange, it was the most sought after present there.

You have to get these CDs! If you're life if full of stress, involves a long commute or you just need a diversion from your everyday life - then here's the CD set you need!

5 out of 5 stars For people who enjoy storytelling. . ........2005-09-25

"This American Life" is fantastic, eclectic, unusual, and often funny. The art of storytelling is dying in America. This collection of stories breathes new life into it. Some of the stories are laugh out-loud funny ("The Little Mermaid") and some are thought-provoking, but all are worthwhile.

5 out of 5 stars This American Life Rocks!.......2004-12-20

This second volume of "the best" of "This American Life" is another gem! Each of these stories is amazing in its own right, and each is a perfect example of what a phenomenal show TAL really is.

Most of these stories are on the humorous side, which is really just one side of the show; however, it's still a well-rounded collection. If you are trying to turn someone on to the show, this is an excellent CD to introduce them to it.

The only thing that I didn't like about the CD was the time between Vols. 1 & 2. Come on, TAL...give us more of the best!

5 out of 5 stars Unexpectedly heartwarming.......2007-07-03

I have a set appointment each Saturday to tune in to NPR for another introduction to "This American Life". I am thrilled that I have access to old shows on cd. This is ideal for a long road trip and conversation.

5 out of 5 stars mesmerized.......2007-02-12

I was fortunate to receive this CD the day before I had a 2 hour car ride ahead of me. I put in the CD and I have no memory of the trip, the traffic, or the route I took. I play the CD frequently, and I learn something new each time. Ira Glass - you are the best.

5 out of 5 stars Radio Documentaries For Long Drives.......2007-02-01

I've listened to This American Life going on 8 years now either on NPR or on-line on the website. Great program, this is the 3rd compliation CD I have purchased and I must say that this was interesting especially the Stories of Fear. I am interested in how the human psyche handles fear given certain levels of stress introduced through everyday normal situations. Quite frankly it can be more than a little funny. The story that really clicked with me was On Hold No One Can Hear You Scream, one persons ordeal dealing with an unresponsive phone company. This is a great cd. Better than the last compliation cd for This American Life.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best but worth a one time listen.......2007-01-20

This American Life is my favorite show of all time. I listen to it religiously. I didn't like this one. It's kind of depressing, whereas I have listened to the other CD's over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Regular Folks With Amazing and Hilarious Stories.......2007-01-05

Ira Glass has a job that everyone would love to do. He gets to interview people and learn about life lessons. I have listened to the NPR show on occassion but could never follow the program faithfully. If you are like me, then this will be your solution. In this 2-CD collection, there are stories about hopes and fears in a new light. I think that the 2nd CD is the most interesting of the 2 CDs.

The story that really made an impression was Julie Synder's dilemna with cell phone customer support (CD 2 Track 2). She really articulates her frustrations that we can all relate to. I worked as an software engineer and dealt with customer service issues on occasion. It's good to see how sometimes mis-communication and tempers often flair into after-the-fact humor. You definitely see the views from both sides which sheds some light on problems with customer support. But, the problems with a phone company just compounds to the humor with technology issues that you cannot imagine. Believe me, it's laughter after laughter but you soon realize that we can all relate to it.

Another touching but eerie story (CD 2 Track 3) is about a closeted son who takes care of his mother. It borders on the unreal as the interviewer learns about the ordeal with his father than suddenly changes things completely. As you listen, there are intimate details that you feel as if you are in the same room. This is one of the true experience that you lack with TV today. It just seems to be all about the shock factor and nothing about the fact that we are all human. It's wonderful that NPR still has shows out there for everyone to listen instead of being glued to the tube.

4 out of 5 stars Looking Along the Road I've Traveled.......2006-03-20

This review was originally written as a commentary on Utah Phillip's Songbook- Starlight on the Trial issued in 2005. Looking it over I believe that the comments can be applied to this CD as well, obviously noting the differences in format. Utah has been consistent throughout his career in both the kind of songs he writes and sings about. He has also maintained his same basic political philosophy so my comments about our political differences also apply. Nevertheless, treasure any CD of his you can get your hands on.

The political consciousness developed in my youth coincided with an expansion of my musical tastes under the influence of the great blues and folk revivals of the 1960's. Unfortunately my exposure to the blues greats was mainly on records as many of them had been forgotten, retired or were dead. Not so with the folk revival this was created mainly by those who were close contemporaries. Alas, they too are now mainly forgotten, retired or dead. It therefore is with special pleasure that I review Utah Phillips Songbook while he is very much alive.

Many of the folksingers of the 1960 have attempted to use their music to become troubadours for social change. The most famous example, the early Bob Dylan, can be fairly described as the voice of his generation at that time. However, he fairly quickly moved on to other concepts of himself and his music. Bob Dylan's work became more informed by the influences of Rimbaud and Verlaine and the French Symbolists of the late 1800's and thus moved away to a more urban, sophisticated vision. From the start and consistently throughout his long career Utah has acted as a medium giving voice to the troubles of ordinary people and the simpler ethos of a more rural, Western-oriented gone by day in the American experience. He evokes in song the spirit of the people Walt Whitman paid homage to in poetic form and John Dos Passos and John Steinbeck gave in prose. He sits conformably in that very fast company. Utah Phillips can justly claim the title of a people's troubadour.

A word about politics. Generally, one rates music without reference to politics. However, Utah has introduced the political element by the way he structured the Songbook. Each song is introduced by him as to its significance heavily weighted to his political experiences, observations and vision. Thus, political comment is fairly in play here. Utah is a long time anarchist and unrepentant supporter of the Wobblies (International Workers of the World, hereafter IWW). Every militant cherishes the memory of the class battles led by the IWW like the famous Lawrence strike of 1912 and honors the heroes of those battles like Big Bill Haywood and Vincent St. John and the militants they recruited to the cause of the working class in the first part of the 20th century. They paved the way for the later successful organization drives of the 1930's.

Nevertheless, while Utah and I would both most definitely agree that some old-fashioned class struggle by working people in today's one-sided class war would be a very good thing we as definitely differ on the way to insure a permanent victory for working people in order to create a decent society. In short, Utah's prescriptions of good moral character, increased self-knowledge and the creation of small intentional communities are not enough. Under modern conditions it is necessary to take and safeguard political power against those who would quite consciously deny that victory. History has been cruel in some of the bitter lessons working people have had to endure for not dealing with the question of taking state power to protect their interests. But, enough said. I am more than willing to forgive the old curmudgeon his anarchist sins if he'll sing `I Remember Loving You' the next time he tours the Boston area.

5 out of 5 stars a bolt of lightining.......2003-11-21

that's how this c.d hit me. i was a fairly new listener of ani difranco's. i bought this c.d because it was used and well i already had "living in clip" and her first c.d. so i figured "hey, one more and at a discounted price? bonus" so i went home to do my daily cleaning and decided to put it in to listen to while i cleaned, which i consider the best thing in the world, cleaning and listening to music, i am sick i know. but i ended up doing some heavy cleaning all throughout the house so all i really heard was the music and someones low baritone voice ,which i fleetingly questioned, but i loved the music so i figured i would listen to it more intently later on. well i finished cleaning and went into my room where my stereo was and layed on my bed, exhausted, i pressed play to start the c.d over and i layed there and listened to what this guy was saying. it almost seemed like my ears were listening too slowly so i shot up in my bed and turned up the volume and listened to each and every beat and each and every word with complete concentration. after the c.d was over i had to lay back down and absorb what i just experienced. well from then on, i was hooked, i put that c.d in my car and it didn't leave it for months and months. i tried to force all of my fellow workers and friends to listen intently as i did and they would look at me with bored eyes and say "yea it's cool" (humoring me of course). they did not understand. it was thier tragic loss. i have yet to find someone that can feel the way i felt upon hearing this wonderful story-teller spin his stories of gold and this genius musician lay these musical jewels. which saddens me, but i guess not everyone is as wonderful as all of us tramps.

4 out of 5 stars Turn down the music so I can hear Utah.......2003-05-21

At the risk of being reviled, Utah carries this CD. His humor, reflections, and ability to convey complex truths with his simple phrasealogy is phenomenal. QuarryWorX

5 out of 5 stars Is more amazing, more beautiful with each listen.......2002-12-01

This album is creative genious, period. It's not a "folk" album, it's a beautiful blending of *very* interesting story telling with musical experimentation that fits more perfectly with each listen. If Utah had been born during Twain's time, he would have been considered a national treasure, but since "we" treasure the types of Limbaugh, Drudge, and other purveyors of uncivilized discourse, what Utah has to say and the way he says it is so foreign in this day and age.

The last cut is simply amazing: "I was in a nightclub in Chicago ....."

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Story Telling.......2002-05-15

Whe nI first got this album, I wasn't sure if I would like it. I had been warned that it wasn't "normal" Ani music--and it isn't, at all. It IS, however, an album of beautiful, interesting stories about our past, present and future. I love to bring it with me on long car rides, especially when other people are with me. It keeps everyone's minds occupied and provides for good conversation afterward.

5 out of 5 stars A mixture of the old & new continue to build his large fanbase.......2006-12-15

Playing Time - 37:25 -- The packaging for Larry Stephenson's "Life Stories" may only be in black and white, but the band's music is a palette of vivid bluegrassy color accentuated with hues of joy, happiness, sorrow and regret...prime fodder for the tales of traditional bluegrass music. While great bluegrass can come in many sizes, sounds, forms and shapes, Larry and company have a firm handle on that "high lonesome sound" with plenty of force, aptitude and drive. That may partly explain why the Fredericksburg, Va. native has won so many vocal awards over the years. After stints with Cliff Waldron, Leon Morris, Bill Harrell, and Bluegrass Cardinals, Stephenson formed his own band in 1989. With decades of recording experience, this Virginia Country Music Hall of Fame member has ten previous albums out on the Webco and Pinecastle labels.

"Life Stories" features Larry (mandolin), Aaron McDaris (banjo), Dustin Benson (guitar), Missy Raines (bass), Shad Cobb and Jimmy VanCleve (fiddle). Rob Ickes appears with his Weissenborn acoustic guitar on one cut, Dixie and Tom T. Hall's "The Knoxville Boy." Despite the label's perceived budget constraints, a couple more panels in the CD jacket would've been nice to include liner narrative about the band and the songs. Instrumentally, the pickers have a golden touch for just the right breaks, licks and fills. There are occasional flavors of twin fiddles, guitar breaks, and more. Larry took up mandolin at age five, and he has the chop down. His occasional breaks are loud, clear and smooth. Instead of picking an overdone ol' warhorse for their instrumental selection, a barn-burning "Monrovia" is one that the three core members of the group co-wrote. A bluegrass arrangement of the western swing classic, "Deep Water," is mighty fine. We are seeing Tom T. and Dixie Hall songs on a majority of major label bluegrass releases. They are an indefatigable songwriting team with a great understanding of bluegrass, apparent in their two songs on this project.

Vocally, the band's trio (with McDaris and Benson's harmonies) can send warmth up your spine like a toasty woodstove. In addition to more traditional repertoire with new arrangements (I've Live A Lot in my Time, Why Don't You Tell Me So?), their set presents some newer material ("Behind Closed Doors") from up-and-coming songwriters like Connie Leigh.
There's a juxtaposition of songs about trains, home and family alongside those about murder, incest, and a baby lost. Stories of life merely document, not always explain, the trials and tribulations we encounter. Sometimes we're left with questions (Why Don't You Tell Me So?), but hopefully when our final day finally arrives we can proudly declare "I've Lived A Lot in my Time." One pleasant technique they use in the latter (and with much more potential in bluegrass) is modulation (key changes) during the course of a song. This mixture of the old and new, albeit always with strong traditional foundation, is a very successful approach for Stephenson that has won him a multitude of fans. At a time when the fighting in Iraq brings out more pain than patriotism in a majority of vocal Americans, Keni Thomas--a smooth-voiced Georgia musician and former Army member of Task Force Ranger, sent into the Mogadishu of Black Hawk Down--steps forward with a collection of songs that restore the poignancy and eloquence of the good fight. Never bombastic in the vein of Toby Keith nor rabble-rousing à la Darryl Worley, Thomas--who wrote or cowrote all 10 tracks with an ear for classic country and rock--simply tells the stories of the men and women in uniform. "Not Me," which boasts no less than Vince Gill and Emmylou Harris on harmony vocals, is an eloquent and understated paean to leadership and courage, while "Circle on the Cross," featuring a spoken introduction by Kenny Rogers, spotlights a military marking worth remembering. Carolyn Dawn Johnson, Michael McDonald, Blackhawk, and Shawn Mullins also lend their efforts to this surprising, affecting project. Album Description

Flags Of Our Fathers is a collection of songs wirtten by Thomas that tell stories inspired by life in the military and those who serve our nation. Working with producers Brent Maher and Mark Selby he uses his unique insight to bring these memorable songs to life and tell a story as only someone who has experienced them can. It's a remarkable album from an equally remarkable artist.

5 out of 5 stars Moving CD with a message.......2007-05-12

I had the good fortune of listening to Keni around Memorial Day. In case you didn't know, Keni was involved in Task Force RANGER that was elegantly presented in "Black Hawk Down" Book and Movie. He is a great story teller and that's reflected in his songs....moving, poignant, and relevant. Great story teller and a great singer/performer.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome - A Great Surprise.......2007-01-08

An awesome album from start to finish. I have already purchased another copy for a friend. Extremely well written songs especially if you have even a single patriotic bone in your body.

5 out of 5 stars For any Serviceman/Servicewoman.......2006-04-15

Having been in the military and served with the Rangers plus being a musician now, anyone who has ever had to go to combat can relate to this CD.
A soldiers story combines mom's apple pie c rations and MRE's all rolled up into one. Keni's voice draws one to listen to the lyrics more so than most singers.

If you have ever been in combat anywhere, anytime...this CD will bring tears to your eyes and make your chest swell with pride. Keni T's been there and done that. And this CD is living proof of the enourmous patriotism our country holds for our Troops in harms way. It's a gut wrenching story and those who have been there........must hear it! RLTW

This complete CD is a great tribute to all that have served and put country before self. There is not a song on this CD that you will not listen to over and over. To know what Keni Thomas has been through and hear it in his music is great. 5 out of 5 stars Earl Klugh - Life Stories.......2007-05-13

This was my favorite cd of the 80's. Smokin' :O)

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Incredible.......2006-09-18

This album is one of Earl's best, which is quite a feat. I went to see Earl perform with his band last Friday night here in Atlanta and was entertained for over 3 hours with songs from several of his albums, including Naked Guitar. If you've never seen him perform you are missing a definite treat. His band is amazing, Lenny Price, David Lee (Spradley), Al Turner, all were in rare form (as usual) and shared several solo spots with Earl. His humor between songs left the audience in stitches as he shared a more intimate side. He signed my copy of "Heartstrings" afterwards as he shared some trivia about the song "Balladina" from his album "Crazy for You", and how it relates to a song performed by Angela Bofill on one of her early albums. Earl Klugh is a definite jewel of a person and entertainer and an extremely talented trailblazer.

5 out of 5 stars The Secret Is Out.......2006-09-01

I have many instrumental cds and fairly broad taste. But you don't need broad taste for this one. This is the most melodically satisfying instrumental recording ever made. If it doesn't make you feel good, check for a pulse.
Earl's earlier recordings were ordinary with a few highlights. He was on a steep learning curve. His later ones have always been very tasteful but sometimes lack spark. But he must have been in a very special place when he made this one. The tenderness expressed in "Debra Anne" and "Moon And The Stars" is exquisite. The samples here can't really do justice to these wonderful tunes.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fine Listening.......2004-01-03

Earl Klugh's contemporary style of jazz is a fine example of his virtuosity and ability to create wonderful soothing melodies. This CD is a must for any Earl Klugh collector.

5 out of 5 stars brings back the memories.......2003-08-21

everytime i play this cd, memories of my days in college ('86) comes to life. i especially like the last song which sounds more like a jam between earl and the session musicians that accompanied him on this outing.

5 out of 5 stars This is a GREAT CD!.......2004-04-30

I first became acquainted with Pat Donohue's great musical talent in the early 1970s when we were in college together at Marquette University. I was thrilled a few years ago to discover that he had a number of CDs available. Life Stories is my absolute favorite. There are a number of fantastic songs on this CD, starting right off with "This is the Beginning" (hauntingly beautiful), the catchy "Goin' Home/Oh Suzanna", "The Hard Way", the chilling "I Don't Know That Guy" and the snappy "My Attorney Bernie." This CD showcases Pat's brilliant guitar playing (a guitar picker of the year and a regular on Prarie Home Companion) along with his great songwriting and lyrics. You'll thank me for getting this CD.

Wow Haugen has blended beautiful songs to describe the Lenten season. The use of synthesizer, percussion, and love ballads are blended so well to tell John's gospels. Our choir just performed this play with RAVE reviews. And naturally anyone who sings these songs cannot get them out of their heads.
Thank you Mr Haugen for making this Lenten season the best of all!
