If storytelling and oral history often seem like endangered species in a culture dominated by disposable infotainment, NPR host Ira Glass could be seen as something of a preservationist, his low-key passion for the magic moments that inform everyday life the driving force behind his successful This American Life radio series. This second series anthology culls its 10 stories onto two discs loosely centered around notions of "Crimebusters" and "Crossed Wires." And while professional writers like Sarah Vowell and David Sedaris (whose bemused take on nationality-diverse French class attempting to explain their various impressions of Easter is characterized by mounting, masterfully constructed hilarity) participate, they are hard-pressed to better the tales of everyday people that are the collection's de facto focal points: a rookie cop's efforts at corralling a household-invading squirrel turning into chaotic slapstick worthy of Sellers or Benigni; a Beverly Hills teen and his father making war, then peace over a spiraling drug problem; Starlee Kline and Mekons founder Jon Langford forming a band of strangers solely through classified ads. Less enamored of their own voices and ideas, those tales of "everyday people" are the collection's true treasures. --Jerry McCulleyAlbum Description
Crimebusters and Crossed Wires is a collection of ten stories, with true tales of (sometimes hapless) crimefighters and investigators of all sorts on one CD, and real-life adventures in miscommunication on the other. From a bungling, squirrel-chasing cop who burns, bloodies, and tears apart a new house in pursuit of the rogue rodent, to a father who resorts to tapping his drug-using teen's phone, Crimebusters and Crossed Wires offers comical and poignant insight. Among the storytellers featured are best-selling writers David Sedaris and Sarah Vowell.

Some of the best This American Life ever.......2007-05-07
Hilarious! Wonderful!.......2007-01-20
PS
Don't take this to the gym with you because you won't be able to do any exercise from laughing so hard.
Truly the best of TAM!.......2005-12-19
Since receiving them, I have listened to all the stories several times (and a few range into dozens of times). Each and every story is worth listening to more than once. The son and father who work out a drug problem by simple "spying on your kid", the lessons learned by being a band geek, and the newest, greatest party/dinner question of all time - it's a collection of stories that are diverse yet centric to life as a 21st century human.
The stories never get old, as I find more in them each time I listen, like petals opening in a blooming flower. I play them while I travel, at work in my office, at home while cleaning and for anyone who has never heard of TAM.
It has now become a topic of office discussion and I've had to buy more copies to give as gifts. In fact, at a recent gift exchange, it was the most sought after present there.
You have to get these CDs! If you're life if full of stress, involves a long commute or you just need a diversion from your everyday life - then here's the CD set you need!
For people who enjoy storytelling. . ........2005-09-25
This American Life Rocks!.......2004-12-20
Most of these stories are on the humorous side, which is really just one side of the show; however, it's still a well-rounded collection. If you are trying to turn someone on to the show, this is an excellent CD to introduce them to it.
The only thing that I didn't like about the CD was the time between Vols. 1 & 2. Come on, TAL...give us more of the best!

The story that really made an impression was Julie Synder's dilemna with cell phone customer support (CD 2 Track 2). She really articulates her frustrations that we can all relate to. I worked as an software engineer and dealt with customer service issues on occasion. It's good to see how sometimes mis-communication and tempers often flair into after-the-fact humor. You definitely see the views from both sides which sheds some light on problems with customer support. But, the problems with a phone company just compounds to the humor with technology issues that you cannot imagine. Believe me, it's laughter after laughter but you soon realize that we can all relate to it.
Another touching but eerie story (CD 2 Track 3) is about a closeted son who takes care of his mother. It borders on the unreal as the interviewer learns about the ordeal with his father than suddenly changes things completely. As you listen, there are intimate details that you feel as if you are in the same room. This is one of the true experience that you lack with TV today. It just seems to be all about the shock factor and nothing about the fact that we are all human. It's wonderful that NPR still has shows out there for everyone to listen instead of being glued to the tube.

Looking Along the Road I've Traveled.......2006-03-20
The political consciousness developed in my youth coincided with an expansion of my musical tastes under the influence of the great blues and folk revivals of the 1960's. Unfortunately my exposure to the blues greats was mainly on records as many of them had been forgotten, retired or were dead. Not so with the folk revival this was created mainly by those who were close contemporaries. Alas, they too are now mainly forgotten, retired or dead. It therefore is with special pleasure that I review Utah Phillips Songbook while he is very much alive.
Many of the folksingers of the 1960 have attempted to use their music to become troubadours for social change. The most famous example, the early Bob Dylan, can be fairly described as the voice of his generation at that time. However, he fairly quickly moved on to other concepts of himself and his music. Bob Dylan's work became more informed by the influences of Rimbaud and Verlaine and the French Symbolists of the late 1800's and thus moved away to a more urban, sophisticated vision. From the start and consistently throughout his long career Utah has acted as a medium giving voice to the troubles of ordinary people and the simpler ethos of a more rural, Western-oriented gone by day in the American experience. He evokes in song the spirit of the people Walt Whitman paid homage to in poetic form and John Dos Passos and John Steinbeck gave in prose. He sits conformably in that very fast company. Utah Phillips can justly claim the title of a people's troubadour.
A word about politics. Generally, one rates music without reference to politics. However, Utah has introduced the political element by the way he structured the Songbook. Each song is introduced by him as to its significance heavily weighted to his political experiences, observations and vision. Thus, political comment is fairly in play here. Utah is a long time anarchist and unrepentant supporter of the Wobblies (International Workers of the World, hereafter IWW). Every militant cherishes the memory of the class battles led by the IWW like the famous Lawrence strike of 1912 and honors the heroes of those battles like Big Bill Haywood and Vincent St. John and the militants they recruited to the cause of the working class in the first part of the 20th century. They paved the way for the later successful organization drives of the 1930's.
Nevertheless, while Utah and I would both most definitely agree that some old-fashioned class struggle by working people in today's one-sided class war would be a very good thing we as definitely differ on the way to insure a permanent victory for working people in order to create a decent society. In short, Utah's prescriptions of good moral character, increased self-knowledge and the creation of small intentional communities are not enough. Under modern conditions it is necessary to take and safeguard political power against those who would quite consciously deny that victory. History has been cruel in some of the bitter lessons working people have had to endure for not dealing with the question of taking state power to protect their interests. But, enough said. I am more than willing to forgive the old curmudgeon his anarchist sins if he'll sing `I Remember Loving You' the next time he tours the Boston area.

A mixture of the old & new continue to build his large fanbase.......2006-12-15
"Life Stories" features Larry (mandolin), Aaron McDaris (banjo), Dustin Benson (guitar), Missy Raines (bass), Shad Cobb and Jimmy VanCleve (fiddle). Rob Ickes appears with his Weissenborn acoustic guitar on one cut, Dixie and Tom T. Hall's "The Knoxville Boy." Despite the label's perceived budget constraints, a couple more panels in the CD jacket would've been nice to include liner narrative about the band and the songs. Instrumentally, the pickers have a golden touch for just the right breaks, licks and fills. There are occasional flavors of twin fiddles, guitar breaks, and more. Larry took up mandolin at age five, and he has the chop down. His occasional breaks are loud, clear and smooth. Instead of picking an overdone ol' warhorse for their instrumental selection, a barn-burning "Monrovia" is one that the three core members of the group co-wrote. A bluegrass arrangement of the western swing classic, "Deep Water," is mighty fine. We are seeing Tom T. and Dixie Hall songs on a majority of major label bluegrass releases. They are an indefatigable songwriting team with a great understanding of bluegrass, apparent in their two songs on this project.
Vocally, the band's trio (with McDaris and Benson's harmonies) can send warmth up your spine like a toasty woodstove. In addition to more traditional repertoire with new arrangements (I've Live A Lot in my Time, Why Don't You Tell Me So?), their set presents some newer material ("Behind Closed Doors") from up-and-coming songwriters like Connie Leigh.
There's a juxtaposition of songs about trains, home and family alongside those about murder, incest, and a baby lost. Stories of life merely document, not always explain, the trials and tribulations we encounter. Sometimes we're left with questions (Why Don't You Tell Me So?), but hopefully when our final day finally arrives we can proudly declare "I've Lived A Lot in my Time." One pleasant technique they use in the latter (and with much more potential in bluegrass) is modulation (key changes) during the course of a song. This mixture of the old and new, albeit always with strong traditional foundation, is a very successful approach for Stephenson that has won him a multitude of fans. At a time when the fighting in Iraq brings out more pain than patriotism in a majority of vocal Americans, Keni Thomas--a smooth-voiced Georgia musician and former Army member of Task Force Ranger, sent into the Mogadishu of Black Hawk Down--steps forward with a collection of songs that restore the poignancy and eloquence of the good fight. Never bombastic in the vein of Toby Keith nor rabble-rousing à la Darryl Worley, Thomas--who wrote or cowrote all 10 tracks with an ear for classic country and rock--simply tells the stories of the men and women in uniform. "Not Me," which boasts no less than Vince Gill and Emmylou Harris on harmony vocals, is an eloquent and understated paean to leadership and courage, while "Circle on the Cross," featuring a spoken introduction by Kenny Rogers, spotlights a military marking worth remembering. Carolyn Dawn Johnson, Michael McDonald, Blackhawk, and Shawn Mullins also lend their efforts to this surprising, affecting project. (Proceeds partly benefit the Hero Fund and the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, which provide college tuition to the children of Special Ops personnel who die in training or combat.) --Alanna NashAlbum Description
Flags Of Our Fathers is a collection of songs wirtten by Thomas that tell stories inspired by life in the military and those who serve our nation. Working with producers Brent Maher and Mark Selby he uses his unique insight to bring these memorable songs to life and tell a story as only someone who has experienced them can. It's a remarkable album from an equally remarkable artist.Customer Reviews:

A soldiers story combines mom's apple pie c rations and MRE's all rolled up into one. Keni's voice draws one to listen to the lyrics more so than most singers.
If you have ever been in combat anywhere, anytime...this CD will bring tears to your eyes and make your chest swell with pride. Keni T's been there and done that. And this CD is living proof of the enourmous patriotism our country holds for our Troops in harms way. It's a gut wrenching story and those who have been there........must hear it! RLTW

Earl's earlier recordings were ordinary with a few highlights. He was on a steep learning curve. His later ones have always been very tasteful but sometimes lack spark. But he must have been in a very special place when he made this one. The tenderness expressed in "Debra Anne" and "Moon And The Stars" is exquisite. The samples here can't really do justice to these wonderful tunes.
