Cymedia, Washington D.C.
"Mindcage's music is straight-forward and to-the-point. The vocals are strong and show no sign of faltering."
Product Description
Mindcage strives to create powerful and progressive music that complements thought-provoking subject matter and compelling imagery. Fans of Queensryche, Rush, Crimson Glory, Fates Warning, Savatage, Dream Theater, Iron Maiden, and Accept will no doubt appreciate the high-caliber musicianship tethered with a wide range of topics, delivered with a dramatic and conceptualized approach.

The longest song, "Outrage", immediately reminds me of Queensryche's Mindcrime stuff, as the song both lyrically and musically is certainly Ryche-inspired. Singer Mike Gray sounds like a more toned-down version of Geoff Tate, whilst the music is highly 80's styled with great melodic solos from Dietrick Hardwick and a very competent drum/bass section. There are no keyboards on this album, giving it a more old-school feel. The song is a very emotional exploration of a tragic event which deeply moved the band members. It deals with the tragic killing of a little girl by a psychologically deranged person who then is defended by religious-minded zealots at court. You'll hear Mindcrime like background voices happening in the track with spoken segments of the sad mother of the victim asking for the killer being caught and convicted. Mindcage boldly criticises people using religion as a means of getting away with their committed crimes through this tragic event.
This is a short album of only six tracks and 38 minutes of running time. The other songs are shorter, from 4 to 6 minutes in length, but equally protesting. The subject matter runs the gamut from gun control to class distinction to alienation of the individual in society. Dietrick Hardwick continues to lay down impressive lead solos on tracks like "Between Two Worlds" and "Chains of Freedom", which is another track about the individual being trapped by religion. Fans of old Fates Warning are going to love the music on this song. Interestingly, the rhythm section of Brian Howell and Jon Crowther begin to venture into a more Rush-driven style on the following tracks such as "No More" and "A Turn of Events". The great bass intro on the former is characterized by dark acoustic guitars ala Fates Warning. The latter is an emotional ballad showing the vocalist paying homage to Geoff Tate in his prime. The CD ends with a fitting track called "Goodbye", yet it's ironically heavy and melodic. The album comes in a nice jewel case with a nicely done cover art (one of the best indie debut cover arts I've ever seen) and a two-page CD insert featuring lyrics and songcredits. If you like to hear old school prog metal, give Mindcage a listen. They're really amazing.
