About the Artist
Singer-songwriter Katie Drake is already garnering airplay on AAA format stations around the country with her debut release, Complicated. Packing a great big voice into a pint-sized body, Drake brings sincerity to every note she sings; she has a range that rivals some of todays top-selling divas. Her vocal style has been compared to that of Bonnie Raitt and Sheryl Crow.

On Complicated, Drake joins forces with noted producer David Ivory, whose work with The Roots and Erykah Badu has earned him two Grammy nominations. The tracks are energetic, sophisticated pop rock, from the soaring hip-hop of High On You and power-pop I Wont Stop You, to plaintive ballads like Sleepwalker. WXPN-FM Program Director Bruce Warren was so impressed; he had the title track on-air the day he listened to the preview release.

Katie Drake was born and raised in the Philadelphia suburbs. Since 1992, she has worked with the popular Scott Romig Band, playing gigs up and down the East Coast from Nantucket to Bermuda. For a long time, she wanted to try her hand at original music. Having met David Ivory and heard his work, she sought his help to put together her debut album. Working on Complicated, Katie and David have brought together some great musicians and songwriters. The response from radio and industry professionals has been overwhelmingly positive.

Art Brut's sophomore effort works the same ironic, are-they-joking vibe that made 2005's Bang Bang Rock & Roll such a hoot. Eddie Argos's lyrics still sound tossed off the top of his clever head, like he looked around the room and wrote what he saw on a dinner napkin. Whether he's choosing between kissing a girl and turning up the stereo ("Pump Up the Volume") or contemplating his own vanity on "Nag Nag Nag Nag" ("wet trousers in the washing machine/ but I'd rather be damp than seen in jeans"), the words are always the best part of the song. The music, meanwhile, is grand and silly, filled with brash Brit-pop tropes and chunky, Weezer-size guitar riffs.

But the band hasn't found a way around their central problem: The songs lack variety. It wasn't such an issue on their debut because the sample was so limited, but now we know too well what to expect. Their particular formula makes it tough; Argos's spoken, thickly accented delivery doesn't exactly have a vast range of expression, and their punk-influenced emphasis on simplicity limits what they can do dynamically. Only two records in and despite their catchy tunes and obvious talents, they're starting to sound tired. Can they find a way to be something more than just a particularly bright flash in the indie-pop music pan? It remains to be seen, but for now I'll enjoy It's a Bit Complicated's smarty-pants snark--for at least another week or so. --Matthew Cooke

Album Description

Much like the art movement of the same name, Art Brut are outsiderish, rebellious, punk before punk, and deliciously libertine. Their second full-length is poppier than the first (2004's "Brutlegs"), and with tracks titled "Pump Up The Volume" and "I Will Survive", expect it to be tongue-in-cheek and rancorously funny.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars intelligent upbeat music.......2007-07-21

Art Brut's second album, It's A Bit Complicated, hit the streets June 26th. Judging from the five song EP, it won't disappoint the multitude of fans won over by their debut album, Bang Bang Rock & Roll. Known for his shrewd self awareness, front man Eddie Argos and his crew have done it again. Mixing talk/stylized vocals, smart verbosity and catchy melodies, Art Brut will satisfy your longing for intelligent upbeat music. It's A Bit Complicated is deceptively simplistic; its perfectly crisp songs are multi-layered concentrated pop energy.

The EP features "Pump up the Volume," where Argos asks, amidst clever background vocals and guitar riffs, if it is bad taste to stop making out in order to turn up a pop song. "Direct Hit" is a rowdy rock number that you wish the DJ would play instead of the multitude of bad danceable tracks. "Post Soothing Out" is more vulnerable about a failing relationship. It hinges on the wit that characterizes the band's lyrical approach when referencing John and Yoko and remarking that "every day is just like starting over." "Late Sunday" is instrumentally diverse with an appearance of horns and xylophone, displaying the range of Art Brut's creativity and are hopefully an indication of their future as a band. "Nag Nag Nag Nag" is a frenzied tale of "adolescent concerns" from the brooding teenage perspective that recalls youthful rebellion.

It's A Bit Complicated is Art Brut a bit more grown up, maintaining a mature perspective amid a swell of pop rock enthusiasm. These songs will inevitably infect your brain and you will find yourself singing them - with a British accent, of course.

5 out of 5 stars A simple formula (that works over and over).......2007-07-18

I can't really speak to the Franz comparison, but I can say that the Eddie's monologues seemed to have evolved a bit over the previous album and are undeniably relatable; especially to anyone struggling in a relationship (tracks, "Post Soothing Over" and "Jealous Guy" come to mind here). Eddie Argos is an "everyman" in the truest sense, and his lyrics exude an authenticity unsurpassed by any Brit-pop band in recent memory.

On the whole, there are some great riffs here too. Overall, this is one of the best albums of '07 and well worth your time - although a bit brief. If Art Brut continues to release albums keeping in form with the previous two, keep them coming.

2 out of 5 stars Not another one!.......2007-07-04

Hey, a new Franz Ferdinand album? Oh wait, it's Art Brut. Seriously, can it get any closer? I guarantee you play "Pump the Volume" to the average Franzie and he'll swear up and down that it's gotta be them. Even the voice sounds ridiculously alike. It may seem unfair to criticize Art Brut for sounding like Franz Ferdinand (and Bloc Party, for that matter) when Franz borrowed heavily from all sorts of other groups. But the UK is so full of these bands now that someone needs to stop them. Preferrably now because in about twenty minutes I'm going to be sick of all of it.

As the Art Wave continues to roll dominant over the post-punk/garage rock niche, Art Brut does what they gotta do even while they sound like a band just formed last Tuesday. They even have a 2004 single called "Formed a Band," like it was done on a whim based on the artsy post-punk that was on the sharp rise. That they would take the "too clever to be clever" modus operandi as far as this (and on the segments of Bang Bang Rock & Roll I've heard) is the very reason why they have no chance of surviving for much longer. I would mourn them if I would actually miss them. Meat is meat, but well-done ain't rare. It's a Bit Complicated is medium most of the way through, though they find some bloody goodness on parts of "St. Pauli" and "Late Sunday Evening." Even "I Will Survive" manages a rolling beat that chugs along nicely beneath the sharp blasts. Too bad a lot of the rest is stringy and grey.

"Pump Up the Volume" has the same sort of snarky humor that Elvis Costello displayed with his similarly titled "Pump It Up"; but the latter made you act against the instincts of the lyrics and, well...pump it...up? "Volume" floats by with the urgency of drying paint. It's punchy, the almost-bored enthusiasm is marked off, and the rhythm is clearly defined. But Franz should be able to do it better...damn it, I did it again. It's unfair really. If Art Brut came first, I might say similar things about the others. Except that Franz does it better, with more style, and their, ahem, art is more brutish. This is just the slick knockoff. Luckily, I'm not disgusted by it, just disinterested. It zips by with neither imprint nor identity. No one can actually hate this stuff, but it's time to move on to something else at this point. After all of these bands, the next Franz record is going to automatically sound like crap.

Best cuts: "St. Pauli," "Late Sunday Evening," "Post Soothing Out," "I Will Survive," "Blame It on the Trains"

4 out of 5 stars It's a bit too complicated.......2007-06-26

Art Brut are just so darn lovable. Any band that rejoices at their own existance has gotta be special.

That fact is reinforced in their second album "It's A Bit Complicated," which is crammed with more of their exuberant art-punk-poppery. It doesn't stray far from their first album's mold, but them it doesn't really need to -- their energetic, quirky little songs are more than enough fun.

After a bunch of "woo hoo hoo hoos" and a little tap on the bass, the opening song unfurls into a sprightly, punky little rock song. "We've taken our clothes off, in the wrong order/And you're leaving your shoes to make you look taller," Eddie Argos muses, contemplating the perils of teen nookie. "I know I shouldn't/And it's possibly wrong/To break from your kiss/To turn up a pop song..."

Having roped you in with the catchy stuff, Art Brut turns their attention to fast-paced rockers like "Direct Hit" ("Move around like your shoes don't fit!", which are equal parts indie-rock and catchy danceable stuff -- some builds perpetually up to a peak, some bounces all over, and some rushes forward in tight, high-octane blurs.

It winds right down to the brilliant last few songs -- "Nag Nag Nag" is an ideal blend of indie-rock grittiness and dancy exuberance, and "Jealous Guy" sounds like an amped-up version of a classic Britpop song. The album ends, but it doesn't slow at all.

Perhaps the most appealing thing about Art Brut is that they always sound just serious enough to make brilliant music, but not so serious that they don't sound like they're having huge quantities of fun. "It's A Bit Complicated" doesn't change much, but it does continue doing what they do best, with a bit of new polish.

The music basically rides on a wave of blazing bass guitar and nimble electric guitar riffs, tightly wound together into fast-moving melodies. They can make it cycle, blaze, buzz, smash and blast in brief spurts (look at "Late Sunday Evening"). And Mikey B produces some nice drums to ground the rapid-fire guitars, although he's a bit drowned out in some songs.

Argos tends to speak rather than really sing, in his warm, rough voice. For most artists, this would sound like a guy covering an inability to sing, but with Argos it just sounds conversational and quirky ("Sorry if my accent's flawed/I learnt my German from a 7 inch record").

And the songs he sings are full of witty lines and laddish woes -- "I Will Survive" is basically an ode to slob dorm living, and "Jealous Guy" is the lament of a guy feeling threatened by his ex-girlfriend's exes, and her lack of intimacy with him ("You're asleep, I wish I was too/But I can't because I've got something to prove/I tried to wake you with a really loud cough/I accidentally set your alarm clock off...")

"It's a Bit Complicated" doesn't really expand Art Brut's sound, but it's more lovable laddish indie-rock from a band that is almost too endearing. Definitely worth getting.

4 out of 5 stars Great stuff.......2007-05-27

Very cool album. I'm into a lot of ambient/experimental electronica and this band really created something neat here - catchy vocals amidst very experimental glitches and whatnot.

My only gripe is that some of the glitch and bleeps are stock sound files from the Reason sound bank. If anyone is familiar with Reason, listen to the drum kit "Glitch kit 4" and you'll find a lot of the sound effects they used there in the first song. I think I'd like this album a lot more if I didn't know this or if they made their own effects.

Still, a great listen. I'm very excited to see what's in store next for them.

4 out of 5 stars So complicated.......2007-04-07

Evidently Portugal The Man is NOT satisfied with just being the creators of lush, smashy indie-rock. Thankfully. Because the result is the swirlingly, bizarrely pretty EP "It's Complicated Being A Wizard," where they throw all catchiness out the window in favor of psychedelic wizardry.

The title track is about twenty-three minutes long -- fuzzy, staggeringly murky and elusively pretty. "We will only take one/and then backs and racks can carry out/of here/someday we'll find a home," John Baldwin Gourley croons under slow, drifting melodies and a heavy layer of fuzz.

He follows it up with a song so short that it doesn't even clock in at a minute. Each of the songs that follows is named after a gem or metal magic, like "Amber Magic" or "Gold Magic." But the music is less predictable: sleepy stoner psychedelica, elusive fuzzy ballads, twittery little guitar pop songs, ghostly sputtery experimental techno, and all sorts of crazy hybrid sounds.

I'm not even sure why this is an EP, instead of a regular album -- it has plenty of songs, and some of them are definitely long enough. But whatever this peculiar band's reasoning, it's a massive experimental step for them, and while it takes awhile to get warmed up to it, the EP is wonderful listening.

There's enough fuzz here for two Elephant 6 albums, laced with ghostly synth and skittering glitches, and all of it placed over grinding bass and some ringing electric guitars. The songs are dense little packages of sonic experimentation, with meandering melodies, although there is the occasional exception like the sparer, quieter "Amethyst Music."

Gourley's voice is pretty unique, but you can hardly hear it as is in this album -- he tries out creepy falsetto, a ghostly lament, a mournful indie-rock monologue, and all sorts of other vocal styles. He sounds the most "normal" in the finale, "Black Magic," where he croons strange lyrics behind a spiderweb of synth and slow-moving bass.

"It's Complicated Being A Wizard" is the weirdest thing Portugal the Man have done to date -- it sounds like a soundtrack from a fantasy movie by David Lynch. And I for one wouldn't complain if they continued exploring this sound.

4 out of 5 stars Different.......2007-03-15

This cd was alot different than waiter. The first track is the next eight put together. Long ambiant phases between dark synth driven songs, much more digital than the pervious album. his vice is possibly better in this cd, definatly worth the ep price

2 out of 5 stars Complicated.......2007-05-28

This album is a slight improvement over Nivea's debut, her vocal performance is strong on a few tracks but overall mediocre lyrics and recycled beats created too may filler-ish type tracks and nothing really memorable to help Nivea carve out a niche in the r&b/hip/pop female division.

I agree with a previous poster that R. Kelly seems to give Nivea his throw-away tracks and hope that she can improve her writing skills and/or work with writers & producers who can come up with songs that can better showcase her voice and catchier hooks/beats to capture listeners attention.

The tracks that I liked solely for the musical arrangements & beats are: INDIAN DANCE; PARKING LOT & OKAY.

IT'S ALL GOOD is a nice up-beat track that makes the best presentation of her vocals; GANGSTA GIRL - I really like this track, especially the guitar riffs & SO FAR - her airy, light vocal performance really sounds great on this track.

5 out of 5 stars Love It!.......2006-06-18

Nivea has such an incredible voice and her songs are awesome.
I love the song "Complicated". It has to be one of her best songs yet. I never really listened to Nivea before. My taste in music has completely changed now, and she's who I listen to most lately. Great album, fantastic songs, incredible singer.

4 out of 5 stars I Love It .......2006-02-23

First Of let me say that i've been a nivea fan since day one. I have both of her cd's and i love them complicated really seems like she put her heart in this cd. I think that the best songs on the cd are:

Complicated
Okay
Parking Lot
I Can't mess with you
Breathe
Quicke
No More
Okay Remix
So Far

So as you see i think the majority of the songs are good but im not a fan of all. but definatly worth the time

4 out of 5 stars It's Cd Is Worth It.......2006-01-29

I Just Love This Cd, This Cd Had Me With 'Complicated, Parking Lot, Breathe(Let It Go), & I Cant Mess With You. This Cd Is Hot

3 out of 5 stars Worth a listen........2005-12-27

Before I begin I would like to say that this CD is so much better than her debut album.

This CD has a lot more emotion, and if I'm not mistaken, her voice has improved. But there is still quite a bit of filler on this album. R.Kelly brings some of his worst production to date to the repetitive song "Gangsta Girl." And "I Can't Mess With You" is not much better. But heartfelt songs like "No More" and "It's All Good" are inspiring and make this album worth a listen. (And even though, I've never been a fan of Lil' Jon, I must say that I'm quite impressed with "Okay.") It's worth a listen.

4 out of 5 stars Romantic album from Tanya. Nothing new........2005-10-19

It's a different album from Tanya. It seems like after her Can't Run From Yourself album, all her songs have gone into one direction: soppy love songs and more love songs. I miss the more bouncing Tanya with songs about different subjects and with more edge to them.
Though, there ARE many great songs on this album, so it is worth your money!

    1. Song about getting over heartache. Upbeat tune and great lyrics. 5/5
    2. Cute ballad that will make you smile. 5/5
    3. Another ballad, but not a great one. 2/5
    4. Great uptempo number with a banjo feel. 575
    5. Ballad declaring love. It's Ok. 3/5
    6. Mid-tempo song about (you guessed it) love. It gets boring fast, but it's still cute. 3/5
    7. Least favourite ballad on the album. 2/5
    8. Mid-tempo song with some highlights. 3/5
    9. Lovely ballad. 5/5
    10. Saucy and cute up-tempo song. My favourite. 5/5
    11. Attitude song. Up-tempo. 2nd favourite. Such a surprising way to end CD. 5/5

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps this is Tanya's best original album.......2003-10-17

From 1986 to 1992 Tanya recorded a series of albums, each of which was a masterpiece. After those albums came two albums that failed to maintain the standards we had grown accustomed to. By the time Tanya recorded this album in 1997, her career seemed to be finished. This album may just be the finest original album of the lot, even better than any of those earlier masterpieces, but did not sell in the quantities that it deserved to. It contains an excellent mix of songs on which Tanya sings as good as ever and the production is superb.

Three singles were released from the album. Riding out the heartache is a defiant song about recovering from a broken relationship. Little things, the only single to make the country top ten, is about how important little things are. I don't believe that's how you feel is a great upbeat song in which Tanya pours scorn on her man who claims he's finished with her. This would surely have been a number one country hit if Tanya were still at the peak of her popularity. All the songs here are brilliant but I must mention the final song, You don't do it. It is a song about dreams that really rocks, contrary to most such songs that are laid-back.

If you've already got the hits and you want to collect Tanya's original albums, this is a great place to start. And if you've got some of Tanya's other masterpieces, you will enjoy this one.

    4 out of 5 stars 1997's most overlooked gem!.......2000-05-31

On Tanya Tucker's 30th album she guides us on an emotional rollercoaster. Perhaps a strange parallel to her own life. But by giving us this parallel, Tucker was able to craft a highly emotional album that allows the fans to relate it to their own life.

Complicated, released in conjunction with her book, Nickel Dreams, spawned the hit single, Little Things. Perhaps one of the most simplist love songs out there. But Tanya didn't just stick to ballads on this album, opening up with jazzy Ridin Out the Heartache to I Don't Believe That's How You Feel these songs make you stomp your feet. They have a New Orleans feel to them. A very different Tanya you might wonder? Love Thing sees Tanya on what she does best, singing about love, lost love and newfound love.

Complicated stayed true to its singers heart, Tanya expressed herself all over the map, but you know what, it worked. Fans loved the album but radio and records did not, perhaps she is a little too rough for the radio now. I would hate to believe that...she may be no Shania, but Shania is definitely no TANYA!

    5 out of 5 stars A Perfect CD.......1999-12-10

It's a shame that Tanya's last album for Capital (before a label dispute) is one of her very best (especially after the mediocre "Fire To Fire" that immediately preceded it). This is strong material, played by excellent musicians, and has some of Tanya's best singing ever. The ballads are particularly effective, including the pretty "All I Have To Offer You Is Love", the touching "By the Way", and the moving "It Hurt's Like Love". Two faster numbers, "Complicated" and "You Don't Do It" show Tanya's feisty side. And unquestionably one of her best performances ever recorded is on the album's first cut (and highlight), "Ridin Out the Heartache" -- smokey, hurtin', and heartfelt. It just doesn't get any better than that! Strangely, one of the least effective songs on this disc was the first single, "Little Things" -- a nice, if bland, song that doesn't have the edge that her best stuff contains. But that's a small quibble for a great CD. Buy this one with no fear of disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars Rob Costlow Solo Piano.......2005-06-26

I too immediately bought Rob Costlow's 2 CD's after hearing his music played on Adam Curry's Daily Source Code. I also immediately emailed Rob from his website suggesting he start his own podcast and he quickly emailed me back. I been doing my own podcast for about six months and Rob immediately agreed to a telephone interview. The direct link to the MP3 file interview with Rob Costlow is:

Rob's music is excellent and I'm really looking forward to receiving his CD's and to his future recordings. If you like George Winston, you will love Rob Costlow.

5 out of 5 stars Rob Costlow is an Amazing Talent!.......2005-06-20

I discovered Rob's music after hearing the song "I Do" on "The Daily Source Code" podcast. I quickly went out and bought "Sophomore Jinx". After listening to the whole album I got back on the web and bought "Woods of Chaos" as well. Rob's work has a very unique style to it. I highly recommend that you check out www.robcostlow.com and listen to the streams that are on his site. If you like solo piano tracks, Rob Costlow is one of the most talented pianists that I have heard in a long time. A definite five out of five very big stars!

5 out of 5 stars still brilliant with no mistakes........2001-04-18

Four and a half years after it came out, I think this is one of the best records ever. All of these songs bespeak a dissatisfaction and sadness with the life most of us lead. That life wherein we work in unfulfilling jobs so we can pay for all of our stuff, or think that there's something better over the horizon, or hope to win the lottery so we can have some ill-conceived 'freedom.'

"And there's always something better to do some place better to go someone better to know there's something better to own"

When this record came out a number of critics said that it was too centered around the music industry, but that's the life Jenny and Kristin were leading. Which, suprisingly, is quite relevant to the corporate, cubicle-bound life.

"See the people on the outside think of all they could have been now they put up with their day jobs put up with the tedium And they're worrying about taxes paying off credit cards living in their boxes that's the way it's always been."

This record is about trying to live a life that is fulfilling, creative, and joyful. This entails sacrifices, hardships, and misunderstandings. Thankfully for we listeners Tsunami has turned adversity into a truly inspiring record. Their last one, apparently and unfortunately.

You owe it to yourself to buy this and play it over and over again, until it inspires you to do those things you've always wanted to do.

5 out of 5 stars just brilliant, no mistakes.......1999-10-22

This band almost means more in their absence then if they were on the major label album-tour-album-tour grind. This album is full of bittwersweet, biting lyrics. Tsunami looks inward, and sees a microcosm of modern life. Their primary focus is living life on their terms, and the struggles that this goal entails. "A Brilliant Mistake" is inspirational and necessary. Every person who believes in something other than corporate life should own this album.

5 out of 5 stars Their most accomplished album.......1999-03-16

Tsunami have come a long way from their early abrasive days via the fragmented "Heart's Tremolo" to this album, which is definitely their greatest accomplishment so far. They are one of the few bands who have a distinctive style and still enough creativity to be able to offer a wide range of musical ideas, which makes this album both interesting and eminently listenable. While perhaps a bit more mainstream than their previous recordings, "A Brilliant Mistake" is the document of a band who knows what they're doing and who are really, really good at it. While the overall mood seems a bit melancholic, there's a number of catchy tunes, too, but not one single weak track.
