Cutler's Ghost Raises the Spirit.......2001-05-07
A brave, intelligent album.......2001-01-02
The album tackles its subject with the intensity and unexpected twists of artists like Andy Pratt and Kate Bush, but does so without their occasional flights of mania. It's uniquely personal work, but never self-indulgent -- and therein lies much of its appeal. Other comparisons come to mind... Joni Mitchell, of course, Sting, Peter Gabriel, Jackson Browne's newer stuff... but each track focuses on the material through Cutler's unique lens. Each track is perfectly matched to the emotional tone of its lyric, and Cutler isn't afraid to go anywhere her muse leads her. Given the state of modern corporate radio, where artistic expression is compartmentalized into ever tighter and dumber formats, this is a brave decision.
The production is inventive, the arrangements flawless... a tribute to both Cutler and producer Johnny Pierce, who is also credited as a guitarist and co-writer on several tracks. Cutler and Pierce collected a top-notch ensemble to fill out the tracks. Howard Laravea's Hammond B-3 and Larry Chaney's Fripp-like electric guitars are particular standouts in my mind... but every artist who contributes here has great chops and made perfect choices regarding their use.
Cutler's voice is crystalline and clear as a mountain stream. She avoids the current trend of many vocalists who chew their words and whine their way through a song... and that's downright refreshing. I'll go out on a limb and say Elisabeth Cutler is a star, in the best sense of the word. I'm very glad to have discovered this album and highly recommend it. I've purchased it for several friends who appreciate its intelligence and integrity. I'll be buying Cutler's other offerings... and hope she has the opportunity to grace us with many more.
