Editorial Reviews
The core members of Tryst began performing together in Paris, France in the mid 90's. They moved to New York City in 1997 and debuted as a full band with the release of their first EP (produced by Chris Collingwood of Fountains Of Wayne). Since then they have been playing regularly in New York, with occasional return tours to Paris. The band has spent much of the past year producing its first full-length CD, now released by the independent label M&H Records.
Band Members:
Tim Cohan- Vocals, Guitar, Keyboards
Ellen Highstone- Vocals, Keyboards
Sam McIlvain- Guitar

In a beguiling bit of cross-promotion, this motley madrigal quartet of ringers performs a largely a cappella selection of songs mentioned in Misfortune, the debut novel by Wesley Stace (better known in musical circles as John Wesley Harding). Supporting Harding's reedy tenor in the Love Hall Tryst are the bass voice of Brian Lohmann and the soaring duo of Kelly Hogan and Nora O'Connor, who adapt their interpretive styles to suit the musical source. Most of the material is traditional British folk balladry as adapted by Harding, though a lovely reading of Leonard Cohen's "Joan of Arc" is a highlight. The results fall somewhere between unplugged, unaccompanied Fairport Convention and the Elizabethan era's Mamas and the Papas. Confirming that the modern era has no monopoly on murder songs, the bloodlust and body count on Songs of Misfortune rival that on any gangsta rap CD. --Don McLeeseAlbum Description
Why are British expatriate singer-songwriter John Wesley Harding, U.S. country/jazz/folk solo artists Kelly Hogan and Nora O'Connor and actor-vocalist Brian Lohmann singing traditional British folk songs in a converted bank?In 1987, Wesley Stace, soon known as John Wesley Harding (a.k.a "Wes"), thought up the opening lines for a song about a foundling baby boy raised as a girl. Six years later the song was completed as "Miss Fortune" and frequently performed by Harding before and after its release on his 1998 CD, "Awake." But, says Harding, "When you sing a song for years onstage you think about the song. The one thing I thought about that song is that I never ended it. What about that character?"
Wes answered his own question by writing a huge 19th Century historical novel, "Misfortune," published under his original name in 2005 to acclaim in USA Today, Entertainment Weekly, and other publications.
The book is studded with traditional British folk songs adapted by Harding, and some camouflaged original compositions. These songs "demanded to be sung in a very specific way," says Wes, so he convened The Love Hall Tryst, a mostly a cappella quartet comprising himself, friend and occasional collaborator Hogan, her favorite singing partner, O'Connor, and bass singer Lohmann. They used the Troy, NY, Savings Bank, a cavernous recording hall with incredible natural reverb.
Like its source, "Songs of Misfortune" isn't exactly a romp in the Victorian meadows. Wes says, "None of (the old songs) have happy endings." Greed, envy, treachery, and murder are on full display here. But redeeming these tales are the ringing voices of the Tryst - cascades of mesmerizing harmonies surround the melody lines shared by all four singers. Even the grimmest scenarios are enlivened by the beauty of the vocals and the authenticity of presentation. Two songs appear in both unaccompanied and blazing, Fairport-ish electric versions, the latter provided by The Minstrel in the Galleries, Harding's occasional "mediaeval rock" band of Seattle musicians.
Whether or not you've read Harding's novel, "Songs of Misfortune" stands on its own as a daring, rewarding adventure in musical scholarship, sublime arrangements and the eternal strength of the human voice.

I just loved this record. I didn't really know much about it going in, though I had read the novel to which it is attached - but this is simply a beautiful record of well-arranged and wonderfully recorded A Capella music. These are mainly traditional folk songs, but also some fake old songs (found in Misfortune) and a haunting cover of Leonard Cohen's superb Joan of Arc. This CD really took my by surprise.
faux-lk.......2005-10-18
The ridiculous contrast between the sweet vocals and grotesque lyrics by itself is entertaining enough to justify buying this album.
Stellar Brit folk.......2005-08-08
ways the vocals even better. And Harding's bonuses w. band do kinda channel Fairport Convention if with slightly modern twists too. And very nice to hear Nora O'Connor & Kelly Hogan singing a different repertoire.
Surprising, but very engaging project-- I hope they record again!

Album Description
SYCAMORE TRYST is the 2nd full-length CD from award winning singer-songwriter Patti Witten, her first on I-Town Records.Grammy®-winner Rosanne Cash contributes to the liner notes: "All too often in folk-based music, there is a preciousness or affected vulnerability that sours the song, no matter how poetic. Patti is completely free of such affectations, both as a singer and as a writer. She is not derivative. She inhabits herself and her music, alive and present, whole and beautiful."
Heaven Magazine (Holland) echoes Cash's sentiments. "We are dealing with a major talent here. If you can imagine a cross between Joni Mitchell, in the days of "Blue," and Lucinda Williams, you will get a good idea of Witten's music."
Four tracks have won songwriting awards (Billboard, Mid-Atlantic, SIBL Project, and Woody Guthrie song contests). Produced by Rich DePaolo, with performances by DePaolo (electric guitar, background vocal, bass, baritone guitar, keyboards, more), Doug Robinson (bass) and Bill King (drums). Guest artists include Robby Aceto (Tom Tom Club), Eric Aceto (Tai Tai Chickapea), Uniit (Sim Redmond Band).
With SYCAMORE TRYST Witten demonstrates that she is more than a consummate folk artist. In 'Good Thing It's only In My Mind,' 'What I Don't Tell You' and 'I Guess That She Left You' there is a blunt, arch humor reminiscent of Aimee Mann, while the sophisticated twang of 'Black Butterfly,' 'Nine Days In Texas' and 'I Think About You,' and ballads like 'Admit It' and 'Goin' Back To Moline' recall the intimacy and power of Emmylou Harris and Lucinda Williams. Witten fearlessly broaches the political hot-topics of terrorism and capital punishment with 'Sunny Day In Terre Haute,' and makes personal loss universal with 'Carry Me There,' 'Another Minute More' and 'You Can't.'

One of opera's legendary figures sings lieder........2001-08-17
The second disc of Anglo-American songs may be less demanding, but are no less delightful. Highlights include Landan Ronald's operettish 'O Lovely Night', Frank Bridge's rollicking 'Love Went A-Riding', Bax's hushed 'The White Peace', Elgar's hymn-like tribute to his vocation 'Speak Music', Delius' rapturous 'Love's Philosophy', as well as a tantalisingly muffled 1937 recording of Stephen Foster's 'Old Folks at Home'. There are also no less than four lullabies, which attests to the Victorian hangover on bourgeois tastes in the middle of the last century.
Most of these recordings date from the 1950s, so the sound is relatively clear, and if Flagstad is past her operatic prime, her ability to express intense passion with an imperiously cool technique would put most modern singers to shame. her regular accompanist, Edwin McArthur, is a model of self-effacement, quietly playful and inventive in the background. My only complaint is that, at this price, surely a lyric sheet could have been provided. There is, however, a fascinating biographical piece, detailing, amongst other things, the soprano's dubious wartime conduct.

...Promising start.......2002-08-08
"The Confession Of Isobel Gowdie" draws its inspiration on the 1662 execution of Isobel Gowdie, who had confessed herself into being a witch after being undescribable tortured. This was the time of the English Reformation and witch hunting was a daily occurrence, executions were cheered on. The reasons for a conviction could be something totally absurd. "The Confessions of Isobel Gowdie" has a Stravinsky "The Rite Of Spring" approach that begins slowly than escalates into a sudden burst of energy. The whole work is divided into musical quotes, a Scottish ballad (The Cruel Mother), a Gregorian chant (Lux aeterna). The Lux aeterna section of the work intensifies with trombones and percussions that become quite erratic, the illusion of ritual barbarism is conjured up.
Tryst, a longer work but smaller in scale was written the year before, 1989. It grew from life out of a violin and piano composition called "After The Tryst" based upon William Sontar's love poem. It is again one continous movement broken up in five sections which center upon faith, love and hope. The musical pattern is much the same as "The Confession Of Isobel Gowdie" swirling winds of sounds that cascade into unformular territory, a territory that draws you into a magnetic field. Tryst begins violently that transends into a slow mediation in the middle and back again to being violent at the end.
"The Confession Of Isobel Gowdie/ Tryst" on the Koch label was conducted by Jerzy Maksymiuk with the BBC Scottish Orchestra, the same very person and orchestra that performed "The Confession Of Isobel Gowdie" at the London Promenade.
One major problem I had with the disc, not so much with the performance or the music itself...is that Koch elected to leave each work as single tracks, two tracks in total and not clearly divide the works up into their respected sections as they were intended for.
James Macmillan may appear to some as new music and a bit of a challenge, "The Confession Of Isobel Gowdie/Tryst" to me is his easiest to listen to, your transported into a dark age that as a whole the music is supposingly representing.
