About the Artist
In 1992, One Punch Nelson began as a casual introduction during a lazy apartment soire. Several weeks later, OPN (then known as the Candidates) played their first gig in Hoboken, NJ. It was the first time guitarist Paul had ever SEEN drummer Ken, let alone played with him. It was a short set of originals filled with miscues, bad monitors, and forgotten chords. But almost immediately, everyone present recognized it as the birth of something incredible. At least, that's how we see it in hindsight.

In reality, the original songs were put on the back burner while the band rehearsed hundreds of cover songs. Put together a U-Haul trailer and a tight 4-hour set, snd you've got a business on your hands. Money from gigs in Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey was systematically embezzled, er, squirreled away for the future "original project." Over the next several years, the band nurtured this "cover band" status while fastidiously orchestrating its original songs.

In 1996, the band finally had the money and time to record a four song EP at a studio in Long Island, New York. The songs were recorded "live" with minimal lead guitar overdubs. The resulting tape sold well to loyal fans and got the band a shot in the Long Island Music Festival. Making it all the way to the semi-finals of this competition encouraged OPN to embark on a full-length effort. In 1998, that project was undertaken at Aria Studios in Hawthorne, New Jersey. With Aria's Pompeo Messano at the board, OPN eventually mixed and mastered fourteen original songs. The band released the self-titled result on its own label in early 1999.

By the way, One Punch Nelson is, of course, a reference to an episode of "I Dream of Jeannie" - a comedy television series which as far as anyone can remember, has always been in syndication.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Rockin' the Blarney Stone.......2002-10-17

Ever since I heard this CD on the Jukebox at the Blarney Stone Bar on 32nd St, New York, it's become a firm favourite of mine, good lyrics, great bluesy guitar rhythms, snappy drum beats.

Reminiscent sound of SRV on guitar, good Rock n'Roll tunes with some celtic flavoured tracks.

Well worth a listen.

5 out of 5 stars Very catchy tunes on this Debut.......2000-08-31

These guys have a really tight post-modern rock sound. Their songs have chord changes and bridges that, while only subtly different, add texture to the traditional rock and roll format. At least 3 of them share lead vocal duty (like the Beatles!) and the effect is positive - it adds depth to the overall album. Even their use of keyboards (which I usually can't stand) is tasty. Definitely worth a listen.
