Once again a Canadian perspective helps to bring out the best in American roots music. Like the Band, these three women of the Great North have taken the traditional sounds of their southern neighbor and made them uniquely their own. They inflect the acoustic intimacy of public domain tunes like "Reuben" and "In My Time of Dying," modern classics like Townes Van Zandt's "Waiting Around to Die," and Peter Rowan's "Midnight Moonlight," and their own songs with only the best and most appropriate elements of their punk, trip-hop, and Motown influences. As in the work of Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, you have to listen closely to hear how Frazey Ford, Samantha Parton, and Trish Klein veer off from the past into the future: a soulful melisma wrapped in Ford's whisper, a hint of a funk groove in their arrangement of "House of the Rising Sun," Klein's electric guitar peeking out between her banjo and harmonica. Chinatown taps into the quiet power found on the back porches of what Greil Marcus called "old weird America," and with nary a musical misstep, qualifies as a masterpiece. --Michael RossCustomer Reviews:

Beautiful Doesn't Even Begin to Describe!.......2005-12-03
Their three voices are amazing enough that any of them could be a soloist, but when they braid and intertwine and harmonize they are positively transporting. Accompanying themselves on banjo, guitar, mandolin, ukulele, harmonica and a bit of electric guitar, they offer new life and powerful interpretations to traditional songs (House of the Rising Sun, In My Time of Dying, I wish My Baby Was Born), as well as to music they compose themselves. I would stack the Tanyas' version of In My Time of Dying against anyone's, and that includes Dylan, Led Zeppelin (they did a terrific version on Physical Graffiti!), Mellencamp, and Beth and April Stevens.
Chinatown is their second album, (2003), and will be no disappointment to fans of Blue Horse (2000), their first amazing album. My only sadness is that The Be Good Tanyas don't produce more music more faster. C'mon ladies, make us another one soon!

However, I'd like to point out that this kind of music originated in Western Europe not in the southern United States. In fact, only three kinds of music originated in the United States: Jazz, Rock n Roll and Hip Hop.
To say that these Canadian women came down and stole this music from us just perpetuates the idea that we don't read enough to get our facts straight.

Jerry Goldsmith's death in 2004 marked the end of one of the greatest careers in film composing. This lavish 57 track 4 CD set traces the path of his astonishing achievements and includes recordings conducted by Goldsmith himself. Featuring The City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, The Philharmonia Orchestra, The National Philharmonic Orchestra, and The Daniel Caine Orchestra. Includes over 280 minutes of music.Customer Reviews:
Awesome Set!.......2007-07-01
Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03
Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11
Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).
Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".
It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.
But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.
Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure.......2006-02-22
Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31
However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.
However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.
Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

Granddaddy of the Hollywood studios, Paramount Pictures is rightfully proud of its century of contributions to both American cinema and the art of film scoring. But the first disc of this 43-track double-CD anthology merely hints at the studio's musical peaks, blithely skipping through its first seven decades in just 17 tracks. Indeed, the package as a whole seems more interested in marketing its post-'70s catalog of hits and blockbusters than it does in paying real homage to history and roots. Even rarities like Double Indemnity and The Lost Weekend are served up via modern budget-line rerecordings, as is Ennio Morricone's epochal Once upon a Time in the West). Contemporary recordings of Aaron Copland's rare score to The Heiress and Franz Waxman's great Sunset Blvd. fare better, but soundtrack fans may miss the originals. The studio's rich pop-crossover successes in the '60s are documented via Breakfast at Tiffany's "Moon River" and excerpts from Romeo and Juliet and Love Story, while successful franchises like Star Trek and Raiders also get their due. Too often the '90s-focused second disc only underscores some uncomfortable trends in contemporary scoring--orchestral nervous tics punctuated by booming crescendos, treacly piano Muzak--and makes one wonder if the music of The Rugrats Movie and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider are really film music milestones. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
Great Movies have Great Soundtracks!.......2007-05-10
Only Disc 1 Is Worth Anything.......2006-07-19
And that brings up another problem. With all due respect to the late Jerry Goldsmith, who has provided some truly great classic movie scores, was it REALLY necessary to include TWO versions of the SAME Star Trek march in this collection? This seems evocative of the milk-it-for-all-its-worth attitude Paramount has had lately toward its now-tarnished crown-jewel franchise. Where's James Horner's theme music from Star Trek II and III? If they're gonna put Star Trek on here twice, they should have provided a little diversity. It wouldn't have taken much, I'm sure.
I'm sure that Paramount's had other films with far more memorable music (even Harold Faltermeyer's Top Gun Anthem could have helped on Disc 2). This just seems like a lazy attempt at something that really could have been great.
More of a propaganda CD.......2002-10-30
It seems a little odd to me that out of 90 years of film making the most memorable scores have been largely released within the last few years. I was pleased to find themes from the Godfather, Indiana Jones and Witness. I was perplexed with the inclusion of songs from Rugrats, both Mission Impossible movies (one would have been more than enough) and Tomb Raider (memorable???).
This is my own personal bias, but I do prefer movie soundtracks that evoke a feeling of excitement. With this collection I just couldn't get excited. I kept finding myself being let down by songs that didn't in some way complement the preceeding song.
There are certainly some great tracks here, but overall I was disappointed. My advise would be to look elsewhere.
Great selection of Film Hits!.......2002-09-25
Older recordings, main themes only.......2002-08-27
I would also personally have enjoyed more "secondary" music themes (otherwise it becomes like reading book summaries that always only quote the opening paragraph), and I could easily have done without the "pop" tunes (like Baby Elephant Walk and the Rugrats theme). In fact, it would have been very nice to listen to an album comprised of tracks chosen for their strong musical value rather than apparently for their box office and/or hit song popularity. But, to be fair, that may be precisely what draws some people to this CD set.
Film score music constitutes the single most significant body of classical music of our time. I hope some of these tracks will entice listeners to buy entire soundtracks and listen to some of these works as a whole.

The second volume of the master Warner Bros. cartoon composer's work downplays the head-spinning montage of the first in favor of just-as-head-spinning complete scores. They aren't from the studio's best-known cartoons but from some of Stalling's most impressive tempo-warping, all-systems-go pieces, augmented by a few mini-pieces that illustrate the way he could transform barely familiar show tunes and classical themes into wild, rubbery jokes. Even without images, Stalling could make an orchestra suggest a "Flea-Ridden Sheep Dog" in 24 seconds flat and run enough changes on Stephen Foster's "Camptown Races" to match every mood in a Foghorn Leghorn cartoon. The head-snapping reversals of his scores anticipate much later avant-garde music. --Douglas WolkCustomer Reviews:

Carl Stalling was one of the foremost composers of music for cartoons and wrote virtually all of the scores for Warner Brothers cartoons from 1936 to 1958. Can't get enough of this release.......2006-09-26
If you can't get into this release and not find yourself enjoying it throughout, something is wrong with you!
I sense a little bit of influence from Rush, The Police, & ZZ Top.
"We will be strong" kicks things into high gear and the twin harmony/leads are top notch.
"Chinatown" grabs you right off the bat with that incredible intro.
Gorham and White takes turns on some goose bump inducing leads.
"Sweetheart" keeps the flow going and echoes some "Rush" stylings throughout.
Classy stuff so far.
"Sugar Blues" sounds like a hopped up ZZ Top shuffle.
"Hey You" has some echoes of The Police.
A solid album, that rocks consistently.
Brian Downey's drumming gets me every time on "Genocide".
Gorham grooves throughout this disc and shows how integral he was to the Lizzy brigade.
Snowy White shows some flashes of brilliance.
The guy gets a bad wrap from some Lizzy fans. He has some sweet spots on this release.
I love this album and after all this time it still gets played at top volume and I never seem to get tired of this release.
Highly recommended in the cannon of Thin Lizzy music.
CHINATOWN ROCKS!.......2005-07-20
these two albums are awesome and have classic songs! yes
there were some not so strong but there are no duds. Also
Snowy White is a really good player and plays great on these
albums and blended well with Scott Gorham. Take a listen again
and really listen without comparing to the Live n' Dangerous
line up that everyone compares too. These albums rock as much
as Thunder and LIghtning and some of the earlier stuff! With
all the bad music out there I still listen to these all the time.
I think true Lizzy and rock fans love these albums and maybe all
the skeptics should give them another try? Rock on!

Goldsmith's Gold.......2004-03-04
money ill spent.......2002-06-24
While the pieces chosen show a good cross-section of Goldsmith's crativity, the execution is seriously lifeless. It is as if the compositions were left to saute' overnight in Symphony Sauce: the performances are plodding and pedestrian. I don't know who convinced Goldsmith to do it this way, but omitting the martial snare roll at the beginning of the Man from U.N.C.L.E. theme, or not adding at least an accordian to the Waltons theme, are just two examples of how Goldsmith's great work has been emasculated by, I suspect, some record exec's insight. If you want to hear these pieces as originally written and performed, you'll have to start searching on other albums. Good hunting, and let us know what you find.
A good example of Goldsmith's range, but..........2002-05-17
The other problem with this album is the selection of cuts. For example, almost anything could have been better chosen from the film *Rudy* but the highly sedative passage recapitulated here, and the entirely inadequate dose of the theme from *The Wind and the Lion* incorporated in this album comes at the tail of an 18-minute medly of lesser stuff through which the average fan of *The Wind and the Lion* has no wish to sit. We've heard the theme from the first *Star Trek* movie endlessly; why not a variation on the nasty elegence of the Klingon theme from that and subsequent *Star Trek* films? Goldsmith also wrote other incidental music for *The Man from U.N.C.L.E.* -- so why not a re-visit of "The Man from THRUSH" (or the original program music "THRUSH Raid") and suchlike?
*The Film Music of Jerry Goldsmith* is reasonably good, but by no means the best to be had. It whets the appetite, but doesn't satisfy.

Andy Bey's hypnotic vocals have enriched the music of Horace Silver, Stanley Clarke, and McCoy Tyner, and made him one the premiere jazz stylists today. On this CD, the Newark-born pianist-vocalist is supported by a quicksilver rhythm section featuring bassist Ron Carter, drummer Victor Lewis, and percussionist Mino Cinelu. Augmented by strings and horns, the deep-voiced Bey drapes his songs in a sophisticated azure aura that is simultaneously ethereal and earthy. Bey's stylistic range is broad, stretching from the slinky, slow-tempoed title track written by Herb Jordan to the down-home number, "Feelin' Lowdown," by blues legend Big Bill Broonzy. Bey's love of Brazilian music is evident on his impassioned takes of Milton Nascimento's "Saidas e Bandeiras" and "Bridges." But Bey's best examples of musical alchemy are his syncopated version of Sting's "Fragile," his "Bird with strings" reading of "Just Friends," and his hornlike vocalese on the impressionistic "In a Mist" by Bix Beiderbecke. Andy Bey proves that there's a fine line between music making and magic. --Eugene Holley Jr.Customer Reviews:

Sparse But Remarkably Elegant, Memorable, Powerful.......2005-05-10
Goldsmith had ten days to both write and record a new score before CHINATOWN debuted. The resulting score was extremely sparse, making use of several songs popular during the 1930s and resting upon a single original theme--but it proved the perfect additive to the film, and it is extremely difficult to image CHINATOWN without it.
CHINATOWN is one of a wave late 1960s-early 1970s films noted as much for substance as for style, and more than a quarter of a century later it continues to be regarded as one of the great artistic triumphs of the era. Directed by Roman Polanski from a remarkable script by Robert Towne, the film paints an ultimately pitch-black portrait of greed, corruption, and evil in 1930s Los Angeles. The primary theme blends several idioms, opening first with a shimmering, metallic-like chord from harp and the rising with other strings to create a oddly American, oddly Asian tone; it then glides into a slightly plaintive trumpet solo that seems to blend both 1930s and 1970s music styles. The overall effect is inviting yet mysterious--and mingles elements of romance and danger.
Both the basic theme and elements from it repeat throughout the film, sometimes making a full musical statement, at other times echoing within more distinctly unsettling tones. The film also makes use of several songs popular in the 1930s, perhaps most notably the memorable "I Can't Get Started" and "The Way You Look Tonight."
The original 1974 vinyl release of the CHINATOWN soundtrack ran just over half an hour. It did not offer the entire soundtrack, which in this context would have been somewhat repetitive; instead, it presented the musical cues that offered the fullest statement of Goldsmith's various constructions. The vinyl edition went out of print during the 1970s and it was not until the Varese release of 1995 that CHINATOWN became available on CD. The Varese release duplicates the original vinyl release exactly in both sequence and content and has very good sound quality; it also offers enjoyable and informative notes as well. Recommended.

Music Far Superior To The Movie it Supports.......2004-10-12
The same cannot be said of Jerry Goldsmith's score, however. It is delicate and deeply felt, with touches of everything from the Big Band sound to modernist classical music, all of it combined to give you both a sense of place and time and also a sort of timeless menace and sadness. It helps (like Richard Sylbert's wonderful sets and Anthea Sylbert's lovely costumes) to root this story in 30's Los Angeles, but speaks to feelings that always have been, and always will be, felt by all of us if our hearts and souls function. If only the movie were this good . . .
One of the Great Minimalist Scores.......2004-06-29
Atmospheric Bliss.......2004-04-04
The intro sets the entire mood. The sound of the trumpet always gives me goosebumps. It's that good!
In response to earlier reviews that "it was too short", this is exactly the amount of music that has always been in the movie. The soundtrack really does only run for over a half-an-hour. If the songs don't "fully develop," it's because they never were meant to. The tracks cannot be judged individually; they form an artistic and emotional masterpiece that must be taken as a whole.
Truly wonderful, particularly on the original vinyl soundtrack albums!
