About the Artist
LOS PATANES (The Brats) is a Pop/Spanish Rock duo based out of Los Angeles, California. The name derives from their approach to writing and performing which, as they put it, is "honest, spontaneous and even irreverent at times", not unlike a bratty kid's behavior. The band was formed in the summer of '97 by Andres Lopez and Axel Hernandez who, after growing up in Bogota, Colombia, moved to California in 1989. On April 12, 2000, after nearly three years in the making, LOS PATANES' debut album was released. Appropriately titled "Al Fin" ("Finally"), this long awaited CD has already received excellent reviews. LOS PATANES' sound is a refreshing mixture of rock and pop that borrows elements from alternative, funk, progressive rock, and even a little hip hop. The melodies are catchy and well crafted, while the lyrics (in Spanish for the most part) are both interesting and entertaining at the same time. Axel's guitar work is aggressive, yet pleasantly melodic, while Andres' drumming is extremely powerful and groove-oriented. The cohesiveness and clear direction of "Al Fin" can be attributed in part to the fact that it was written, recorded and produced entirely by the two childhood friends. On-stage, a power trio picture is completed by the striking presence of world-renowned bassist Vail Johnson (Stevie Nicks, Paula Abdul, Michael Bolton, Herbie Hancock, Kenny G and many more), whose talent and experience would be impossible to describe in a few short sentences.

Product Description
Spanish Pop/Rock with a little bit of Hip Hop, Funk and a hint of Alternative and Progressive Rock.

5 out of 5 stars Best Cherubino..........2007-05-06

No kidding. This album has the best Cherubino part compared to the other Le Nozze di Figaro copycat. After you've listened to Non so più cosa son, you would feel bad hearing the other rendition of the same song.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful music.......2006-06-20

you do not have to be an opera expert to appreciate this cd , as a person who is just beging to appreciate fine opera this is a wonderful choice . waht is nice amazon gives you the opportunity to listen to the tracs prior to buying it. i am extremelly pleased with this item and im sure you will be to. sincerly christian john nielsen

5 out of 5 stars Close Your Eyes and Listen.......2006-05-28

If right now you need to know joy and timelessness, a heart filled with light, beauty that has been and will be always, overflowing with the splendor you are fashioned from, knowing all that is your own, that you are only in the least important sense alone, with nothing to fear other than never perceiving any of this, close your eyes and listen to the Duettino Sull'aria from Le Nozze di Figaro...

5 out of 5 stars Terrific value, beautiful quality........2004-04-16

This CD is a wonderful value with top-notch recording. The Cherubino character (mischievous lovestruck youth) is especially delightful on this CD. I fell in love with "Sul Aria" in The Shawshank Redemption, and later saw this opera live. Though it's only a highlights album, I found it rather complete, with solid linear notes (plot summary for you to follow along), and ALL of the beloved songs I had remembered. I recommend this one!

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional recording.......2003-09-29

The quality of this recording is exceptional. Naxos recordings are often played on classical music stations for good reason. The performances are excellent.

This collection includes Ernesto Lecuona's complete 1954 recordings plus a series of 78s made in 1927-28. Ten of the recordings were previously unreleased. This is a lot of lightweight Cuban piano music to deal with at once, but it's definitely worth doing. Lecuona's music, which is having a major revival, may not be important. But it's consistently charming and entertaining. The 78s, which sound surprisingly good, reveal even more of a virtuoso than do the later recordings, but throughout we hear playing that expresses the spirit of the music extremely well. And yes, the famous Malagueña is here, sounding very sexy. --Leslie Gerber

5 out of 5 stars Lecuona Plays Lecuona.......2007-05-12

Oh Boy! What can I tell you about this magnificent collection of musical jewels from our Maestro Lecuona. I bought the original Long Playing Record back in the 50's in my country.
I purchased it again shortly after my arrival to the US, and I was lucky enough to buy it on DVD from Amazon, once I found out they had it.

5 out of 5 stars Lecuona the Cuban pianist is Great!.......2005-08-17

In my opinion this is one of the best CD's from Lacuona, Most of his piano compositions are recorded here (original ones), What, Ms. Leslie Gerber forgot to mention is that Mr.Lecuona was a band leader,"Lecuona and the Cuban Boys", remembers him? Or maybe she does not have sufficient information about him. The music from Lecuona still is very well alive today. I came across his recordings on my own, no one ever told me about this great pianist. I happened to hear the Malague?a by another great Cuban composer and band leader Perez Prado (The Real Mambo King) in one of his albums and Lecuona was the author. That got me interested in him. I'm pretty sure that Ms.Leslie Gerber does not mean any harm trying to put this composer down. It's just that maybe all she knows is Gerber baby food stuff!

4 out of 5 stars The Cuban Chopin.......2004-06-18

What a great album and great value. There is music here that will make you smile, break your heart, inspire you, and Lecuona's skill is breathtaking. If you enjoy classical piano music (with a Cuban/Spanish influence), you'll love this. No, it doesn't display the virtuosity, complexity or seriousness of Lizst, Chopin or Beethoven, but it's fun, beautiful, dramatic yet accessible. You'll love it.

5 out of 5 stars Lecuona, the musical genious . . . . ........2002-10-16

I feel compelled to identify myself first. I am Cuban born who arrived in the US in 1960 at the age of 16 years old. I am a US citizen since 1965 and a US Army Veteran of Viet Nam. I will die defending the right Ms. Leslie Garber has of expresing her opinions. But what I will not condone is her ignorance. To say that Lecuona writes "lightweight Cuban piano music" and that "Lecuona's music may not be important" is to show ignorance. A musician that composes GREAT music in several genres of the music world, a musician that in all genres has highly succesful pieces, and, a musician that after many years, (70-80 years) is still heard and admired can not be called other than MUSICAL GENIOUS and a CLASSICAL MUSICIAN. His music is so beautiful that it will live forever. From his Afro-Cuban compositions, to his romantic popular boleros, to his valses, to his Zarzuelas, Lecuona demonstrates once and again, time after time his immense musical talent. His Afro-Cuban "Cafetal", his romantic boleros "Noche Azul" and "Amapola", His vibrant and colorful "Comparsa" and "Andalucia", his classical Valses, just to mention a few things, makes Lecuona to stand together with the great musicians of the world. The fact that Hollywood made a film around "Estas en mi corazon" and that great singers, like Placido Domingo, want to sing Lecuona's music speaks immensely well of Lecuona/s greatness. The fact the popular instrumental orchestras like Faith, Conniff, Mantovani, Cugat have arranged and interpreted a lot of Lecuona's music also says a lot about Lecuona's versatility in his work. Lecuona is probably important to many millions of people and his music is certainly not lightweight. And if the only thing Ms. Garber can say about "Malaguena" is that "it sounds very sexy" is to demonstrate that she does not know a thing about music. It definitely does not give her the priviledge of commenting about Lecuona's music.

5 out of 5 stars LECUONA IS NO LIGHTWEIGHT.......2002-02-27

Lecuona is one of the most important composers of Latin-America. He is by no means the "unimportant" and "lightweight" Leslie Gerber (whomever that may be) claims, having been hailed for performances of his earlier (and "less mature") works by the likes of Maurice Ravel.

In my opinion the highlight of the set is the devilish "La 32". It's also interesting to compare his interpretations of the same works at different times in his career, like the two recordings of "Por que te vas?" and "Amorosa", especially keeping in mind that Lecuona seldom notated and improvised quite frequently, leaving the transcription work to his students.

5 out of 5 stars Que Viva Zarzuela!!.......2006-11-10

Zarzuela is Spanish operetta. This is a fine collection of choruses and preludes from various famous Zarzuelas, particularly for a beginner in the genre. If however you have been "enrollado" in Zarzuela for a while it's a lot like popular classics or "Opera Goes to the Movies" It'll be stuff you've heard before. Maestro Roa knows how to conduct with finess and fire, whichever is required and the performances are easy to appreciate and very easy to understand the lyrics if you speak Spanish. I highly reccommend this disc to anyone who wants to take away the veil of mystery surrounding Zarzuela and start exploring on your own. This disc is an excellent place to begin!

4 out of 5 stars Preludes & Choruses From Zarzuelas.......2006-07-17

Preludes & Choruses From Zarzuelas~ Miguel Roa was something quite new to me. Having mostly listened to classical from France, Germany, Austria, Russia and Italy I had not listened much to Spanish composers. The end result is that the music is very easy to listen to but feels light and I feel that it sounds a bit to much like movie soundtrack music. The book-let is quite well done and the painting on the front is splendid. The liner notes and the essay inside are well done and it is not overlong or too verbose. I must say that I had never ever heard of any of these composers before and it was a with an adventurous spirit that I started listening to this recording and to my pleasant surprise it was quite good and I therefore give it 4 out 5 stars.

Great orchestration

Wish you had this or any other like it in DVD
thank you

5 out of 5 stars The Dance of the Lovers is Here!.......2003-09-07

For many years an ancient 78 of one of the items found on this welcome CD was the most requested item for playing on the national radio broadcaster in Australia. Requests for full details of the item always yielded an announcement that everything on the record label was printed in Spanish, that there was not much of it, and all that could be deciphered and translated approximated to "The Dance of the Lovers".

Well, the same item features on Track 13 of this CD in a digitally recorded 1999 Madrid recording, and full information is provided about it and the other zarzuela excerpts in notes by Manuel Garcia Franco. This once popular item on Australian airwaves is a simple verse and chorus, the first in the minor and the second in the major mode. Framed in a short introduction and coda, it is sung twice, and what the female chorus members sing the first time is sung by the male chorus members the second time, and vice versa.

Although the Spanish composers of the zarzuela excerpts included here are represented in my collections by solo items from singers such as Supervia and de los Angeles, the choruses and orchestral excerpts found on this CD are all new to my ears. I have never seen a zarzuela and, welcoming and recommending this collection of samples, would like to read reviews or communications from others with better information.

5 out of 5 stars ¡Olé!.......2003-02-26

I know almost nothing about zarzuelas, other than that they're Spanish light operas, immensely popular in Spanish-speaking areas and virtually unknown everywhere else. Why they didn't travel and Viennese operetta did, I'll never know; they're a heckuva lot more exciting!

If this disc is any indication, the music, the rhythm, the overall feeling of zarzuela music is infectious. I put this CD on and then couldn't stop listening to it. According to the liner notes, these orchestral selections and choruses are among the best-known from this genre. I can see why they're popular. The playing and singing of the Comunidad de Madrid Orchestra and Chorus are exemplary.

Now please excuse me, while I go sign up for castanet lessons.

Buen disco como la salsa no es hecho de veteranos, pero tampoco es salsa monga. Los cantantes son jovenes, pero no suenan como nenes. Es un buen disco, si salen mas talento nuevo en la salsa, el genero sigue.

5 out of 5 stars Pa' los saleros!.......2006-11-18

I put this cd in my car I was blown away. NG2 has an explosive combination of music and vocals. They have an amazing flow and energy that all you want to do is dance all night long. What is so entrancing about this duo is that they seem so young on the cover but their style and voices are very well developed. Sometimes I think I am listening to veteran singers like Victor Manuelle or Gilberto Santarosa. If you are a Salsero you gotta have this cd in your collection!

5 out of 5 stars Just the best of the best........2006-02-08

From all the compilations of Maria Callas EMI has issued this is BY FAR the best one.

Unlike her studio recitals, unequal and mostly recorded when her voice was starting to decay, this live records take you back to the glorious early fifties when the young Callas was changing the history of opera forever.

The first 6 CD's are scenes from stage performances and the last 2 from recitals.

Chronollogically, this compilation starts with the legendary (and controversial) 1951 Mexico-City "Aida" and ends with the 1964 Covent Garden "Tosca" (when Callas' voice was just the shade of itself but at the peak of her dramatic skills).
Listen to the electrifying poetry of the 1952 "La sonnambula", to the devorating flame of 1955 "La traviata" and "Lucia". Not to forget the 1952 "Norma", the 1957 "Ana Bolena" and some rarities like "Andrea Chénier", "Ifigenia in Tauride" and "Poliuto".
The only great absent of this collection is "Armida"...

As for the the 2 recital CD's, the first one contains arias from concerts between 1952 and 1958, when Callas was in full command of her voice. Nobody else was capable of singing arias from Nabucco and Lakmé on the same recital! And listen to the last aria: Wagner's Isolde's dead.

The second one, contains arias from 1959 to 1963. Here, Callas voice had diminished considerably and she was not anymore capable of the same technical miracles, but she still managed to give thrilling dramatical interpretations (listen to the dead scene of Madama Butterfly of the 1963 Paris recital!!!)

In 80% of this compilation you can hear the young Callas creating her own legend, giving herself completly on the stage.

5 out of 5 stars CONTINUING THE DEFINITIVE LECUONA SERIES.......2004-09-14

In Each volume, Tirino's playing is Herculean. He understands all the forms-and then plays them flawlessly with total feel, command, poise, and technical panache this music requires. The rumba will have you begging for more! I don't think anyone could ever surpass the perfection Tirino brings to his Lecuona disks. Gold standard.

      5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2001-05-17

I love this disc. Tirino is extraordinary from the first note to the last. How dare anyone call this great artist any other name but MAESTRO. This is a must have for any music lover. In fact, this is my favorite disk out of the whole Lecuona series on BIS. Get it, or you'll be waiting till the end of time for a better recording by any artist on these works, or on any Lecuona for that matter. 5 stars plus 100!

5 out of 5 stars INCREDIBLE MUSIC AND PLAYING.......2001-05-04

This disc is fabulous from begining to end. Tirino is phenomenal-don't even DARE to think otherwise! This music swings and is beautiful from top to bottom. I'm going to buy all the discs in this series-if they are as good as this one, boy-I'm in for a treat. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars PIANIST OF PIANISTS.......2001-04-24

What more can be said of Tirino and his recordings of Lecuona's music except TOTAL, ABSOLUTE PERFECTION. This disc stands out for several reasons: The spirited Rumba with voices and chorus, and the Danzas Cubanas which are real gems. (as well as Vals Gitano). These danzas require EXTREME Left hand control of technique along with many colors and swing. I as a Cuban know this very well. I have never heard these pieces played better. Tirino's HUGE technique, beautiful sound, varied phrasing, and delicate subtelties never fail to amaze the listener-its incredible. Forget any negative comments-they are silly, stupid and uniformed. A better pianist, and better playing of this music you will never, EVER hear. If you want the best recordings of Lecuona's music, Tirino's series on the BIS label is IT. Get Lecuona's own recordings as well, as a point of reference. ENJOY!

5 out of 5 stars PERFECTION: PIANO PLAYING DOESEN"T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS.......2001-04-24

I own the entire Tirino/Lecuona series on the BIS label and I am a teacher at a major musical institution. I have heard a lot of piano playing in my life, including much Latin American piano music, which I have a special affinity for. Simply stated: Tirino plays this music like a God. Pianism of this high a calibre dosen't get any better. Period. Of all the discs in this series, this one is my favorite,(along with Volume 3). The rumba sizzles, and Tirino infuses it with breadth, stylistic colors and rhythm with real panache. And he wrote the Spanish lyric himself! Amazing. Tirino's technical skills are monumental, BIG, Lisztian in ability, certainly far above "Clementi" or "Scarlatti", good heavens. His playing is perfect for Lecuona-in fact-for ANYTHING. Beyond staggering technique he has a singing quality and subtelty of nuance and phrasing rarely heard nowadays-flexibility of sound with thousands of variations in phrasing, tone, dynamic, and pedal subtelties that make his musicianship stand FAR above many others. His tone is rich, full, NEVER BANGING (enough already, please!), aristocratic-never vulgar. Anyone who really knows good piano playing will hear it. Tirino's playing is very warm. The Danzas Cubanas (especially Lola esta de Fiesta) are magical. Put on Lecuona's recordings and compare them side by side to Tirino's. AMAZINGLY IDENTICAL! Fact: Tirino has been recognized as the Lecuona authority in the world for a reason-TIME magazine, The New York Times, and Stereo Review can't be wrong. Neither is the Lecuona family, who have endorsed his recordings, interpretations and work. There might not even be a discussion about Lecuona these days, had it not been for the work of Tirino.

In summary-Tirino is a GREAT artist and one would be hard pressed to imagine anyone else coming along and improving on his recordings. Comments made to the contrary can be dismissed as silly, uninformed vulgarity. If you want to hear great Lecuona, and great Piano playing by a tremendous artist, this disc and others in this series are for you. If not, it might be advisable to learn music, and re-wire your brain to try and listen differently.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, but What Are the Words?.......2006-07-04

This is a wonderful collection of music spanning many centuries, some of which you are unlikely to encounter anywhere else. The performances are beautiful, too. The one drawback is that the liner notes contain very few song text translations, a big problem for a large CD set with music that is primarily vocal.

      5 out of 5 stars outstanding collection.......2002-09-27

I have quite a number of CDs with Medieval Age polyphony, byzantine chant and renaissance music, but this collection goes beyond what could usually be expected from such boxsets. I'd highly recommend it to all.

      5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2001-09-20

This is the best collection of medieval music I have ever heard. The performances are top-notch, and all of the songs are well done. I highly reccomend this collection not only for fans of medieval music, but for any music lover.

5 out of 5 stars 7.5 hours of superb music at a most reasonable price........1999-12-24

There isn't a clunker in this set. All the performers are top drawer and the recordings are good. The notes are a little brief and a bit scholarly, but can be ignored easily.

You will get an idea of the different kinds of medieval music as well as the top groups and soloists working currently in the field.

When I got this set, my mother and I listened to all 7+ hours straight through. We then started buying CDs from the different performers we had to hear more from.

At twice the price, this would still be an excellent addition to any classical or medieval music collection, as well as the best introduction to medieval music around.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-05-08

I just bought this set and I am very impressed. To start off I am a very big fan of the soprano and baritone voice. In addition to this I am of the belief that Kiri Te Kanawa and Ruggiero Raimondi can do no wrong when it comes to singing, so naturally it was not very hard for me to decide which Don Giovanni to add to my collection.

This set does not dissapoint. Both the Don and Elvira are in exceptional voice. In addition to this rest of the cast is terrific. Donna Anna, sung by Edda Moser, is truly remarkable especially in her first aria. I have read other reviews about her singing of this role and it seems that the reviewers are split in half. One half seems to think her Wagnerian sounding voice is far too heavy and aggressive for this role while the other half seems to find her perfect. Although, I must admit there are others that I have listened to and enjoyed just as much as Moser, it is nice to be able to hear "Or sai che l'onore" sung as though the soprano has just deiscoverd some horrifying fact and is ready to take action against it rather than faint. True, singing anything softer than forte is an alien concept to this woman, I feel that most people will be duly impressed.

Besides, if you do not enjoy Edda Moser's voice then any buyer can be certain to have loads of fun with Teresa Berganza, who sings the role of Zerlina. To put it plainly Berganza's singing and interpretation of this role may exceed even that of Bartoli's, who is yet another singer I firmly believe does no wrong when it comes to music.

The rest of the cast is also excellent. Don Ottavio, Leporello, and Masetto are all sung and portrayed as well as any. Overall this is a fine set and is well worth the purchase

5 out of 5 stars The Best Don Giovanni On Record.......2004-09-15

Everyone has their pick of their favorite Don Giovanni, and recordings which they consider to be the ultimate. For me, this 1979 studio recording, which was also the soundtrack for the Joseph Losey film, is the greatest on record. It has the right voices for the dark and witty drama that is Don Giovanni, the right orchestration and there is a certain magic to the whole thing that is going to leave you an opera fan for life. Ruggero Raimond sings the role of the Don. He is convincing both as a singer and an actor, bringing life to the dark, predatory, perverted, scheming character. Don Giovanni is a wolf disguised as a gentleman. He is charming, elegant but beneath his mantle of aristocratic nobility, he is the Devil incarnate. His music, mostly through recitatives (he gets only a toast aria "Finc al vino" and a Serenade "Vieni A La Finestra"of elegance) is full of wit, sophisticated humor and bawdy ribald perversion. He is a man whore, who delights in making love to all women of any age, shape or size (but never twice). He is anti-marriage even anti-romantic love. He was married briefly to Dona Elvira who is still demanding her rights as a wife and follows him everywhere, obscessed with him, attempting to regain his love, warning other women of his deception and betrayal. The role of Dona Elvira is sung by Kiri Te Kenawa who is in excellent late 70's voice, her dramatic inflections are perfect for the role. Actually, she makes a convincing and less cartoonish Elvira. Dona Elvira is usually played quite histerically and even comically but Kiri Te Kenawa plays her with a dignity of her own. If she is dramatic it is because she is madly in love with Don Giovanni and conflicted. She has a love/hate relationship with him.

Donna Ana is performed by Edda Moser. A German soprano of lyric dramatic coloratura, she has the perfect category of voice for Dona Ana the way she ought to be sung. Nowadays it's popular for a light lyric soprano to sing the role, as Renee Fleming has done. But I am pretty sure Mozart intended for her to be a dramatic soprano with a heavier voice that is nevertheless lyric, beautiful, full of pianissimo and high top register. There is one coloratura aria "A Forse Un Giorno Il Cielo" and dramatic lines in her recitatives. Right from the start, she is screaming in horror as she discovers her father has been killed by Don Giovanni. There are also moments in which the dramatic music compliment the dramatic outbursts such as the moment when she recognizes Don Giovanni as the man who tried to rape her. "O Dei ! O Gods!" she cries. There is an intense quality to the aria "Or Sai Che L'Onore" in which she is resolved that Don Ottavio take revenge against the Don. Edda Moser has a Wagnerian voice that is quite good for Dona Ana, especially because in this "version" she has some feelings of temptation for the Don which she is vigorously fighting to kill.

Lorin Maazel is a good conductor, even if he makes an excess of strings and conducts some moments such as the Act I finale at a faster pace. Jose Van Dam is a perfect support for Raimondi as Leporello, the faithful, clever and comic servant. His basso buffo voice is perfect for the role. Zerlina is sung by the adorable Teresa Berganza who has a sweet, lyric voice and who plays the almost seduced peasant girl with great conviction. In the end, she loves Masetto and will not betray him. Malcom King's Masetto is quite good, adorably jealous. Jon Macurdy has a terrifying voice as the Commandatore. This is the perfect Don Giovanni. What are you waiting for ? See the movie and get this soundtrack.

      4 out of 5 stars If only............2004-05-07

This recording is exciting no doubt but it has a serious flaw- the sound. All of Mozart's orchestral brillance reduced to mush with the exaggerrated acoustics. An engineering disaster not helped by Maazels excessive use of string. Having said that wow- the singing catches fire. This version is comes close to comparing with the legendary Guilini recording with Schwartkoft and Sutherland. Kiri te Kanawa is phenomenal!!!. Very rarely does she sound so convincing dramatically but she is heavenly in this recording. Ah che di mai, Inquali eccesi, Masker's trio, Ah Fuggi.. are all sung excellently with a full throated creamy tone as golden as the morning sun and as smooth as silk. Not a note out of place or scooped. Schwartkopf occassional shows her troubles with Mozart- esp in Inquali eccesi but otherwise she is commanding. Her's is the more compelling potrait but te Kanawa outshines her in all other aspects of the role- youthful brilliance coupled with a voice that is truly unforgettable.

In the 1970's te Kanawa as a lyric soprano had no equal esp in Mozart. Freni, Riciarelli, Tomowa Sintow, Cotrubas, Popp comes nowhere near and four of her Mozart recordings then deserves to be ranked as some of the most sensational recordings ever committed to disc ( along with her Grammy award Four Lasts Songs ). Of her many Mozartian potraits; Fiordiligi and Pamina with Lombard and her Figaro with Boehm, this Elvira has to be the most breathtaking and quintessential of all. Her incredible voice, the manner of her delivery and the warmth of her superlative singing is magical.

Edda Moser is a wondefully dramatic Anna, not always focused and she sounds positively insecure in her entrance. Sutherland is incomparable. I find her 'Or sai' tellingly dramatic. Berganza is lovely and she manages the high tessitura well.

The men lack something of the spark in comparison. Van Dam is a most aristocratic Leporello. Terfel is more believable. Raimondi is commanding- his is the most sexually appealling of all recordings. Maazel has wonderful moments but tends to rush much of Mozart's orchestral colour.

5 out of 5 stars Like Amadeus, Terrific! A Must have!.......2001-08-03

If you have seen the 1984 Milos Forman Best Picture Amadeus, you would have seen the Commandatore Scene from Don Giovanni. This soundtrack is to the 1979 film version of the opera, with the great conductor Lorin Maazel at the baton, Kiri Te Kenawa, Edda Moser, Berganza and Van Dam putting in their talents. This is a great performance, and if you loved the film, this is a must have. Dark, comic, it is Mozart's finest Italian opera. Popular for its beautiful melodies, such as "La Ci Darem La Mano" "Viva La Libertad " the Don's lusty champagne aria "Finch hal Del Vino" and of course the climatic encounter with the Commandatore, Don Giovanni remains one of the world's greatest operas. Before you listen to all the other recordings, try this one out. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. Of course, Maazel fans might appreciate it better, as well as fans of Te Kenawa and Moser.

2 out of 5 stars Not the best by a long shot.......2001-05-09

Frankly, this is very overated recording, as is the so-called legendary Gulini. Best in my view are a) Josef Krips (Decca) and Mitropoulos (Sony Classics). The latter is live, which this opera can take and in fact it adds to the frisson and excitement particularly in the final act. And the singers. Nobody has yet bettered Grummer, or Della Casa as Donna Anna or Donna Elivira. Hear them and you won't be able to listen to others doing this opera. The sound for a 1956 recording is excellent as is the Krips one which was recorded around 1959. In both recordings Siepi is the Don and his voice is a marvellous mixture of suave, erotic and downright sinister. In short he encompases the whole role. Do yourself a favour and get BOTH these recordings.
