In my opinion, this legendary compilation album is without a doubt, a true testament of the brilliance and musical creativity of four masterminded genius'. This legendary compilation album is also a fine fitting tribute to a great legendary band that was truly indeed, far ahead of their time. This album is the tales in the life and world of ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA, their music is their story that speaks for itself.
It is now time to let the Rock n' Roll music of ELO to speak for itself and back it up musically as it was originally truly intended to be heard and listened to. I LIKE THE WEIRD SOUNDS AT THE BEGINNING OF "STARLIGHT" AND "SUMMER AND LIGHTNING." ALSO, "STARLIGHT" HAS A GREAT LINE THAT SAYS 'STARLIGHT, YOUR EYES ARE LOOKING DOWN ON ME.' "JUNGLE" IS ALSO A PRETTY GOOD SONG.

More upbeat and peppy than "Nightbird" (which I also loved), "Light at the End of the World" sounds like a cross between "Cowboy" and "Wild!" to me -- with a little bit of "Chorus" and "I Say I Say I Say" thrown in for good measure. "Sucker For Love" sounds like an updated version of "La Gloria", and it's even more fun. "Sunday Girl" is a perfect synthpop masterpiece. "I Could Fall In Love With You" puts me in mind of "Don't Say Your Love Is Killing Me", and so it goes on with all Vince's vintage bleeps, buzzes, and knob-twiddling. By the way, if you've got quick ears, you'll also here echoes of "Always", "Treasure", "Snappy", "Crown of Thorns", and even "March On Down The Line". Listen closely! :)
It sounds like he's dusted off some of the old analog keyboards and sequencers, to great effect. Andy's vocals are in tip-top shape, only stretched a little on the deepest notes (like the notes he used to lose himself in so beautifully on "You Surround Me"). A fantastic album, and it couldn't come at a better time.
Welcome back, Erasure!
A revival of sort back to the day of glitteringly produced synth pop that your granny may tap her feet to. "Sucker for Love" really revives this almost forgotten style. They were the first openly gay band who sold really well. Now,being out, "drags" bands down.(no pun intended)
Most of the songs work really well. Andy Bell keeps it personal, sharing his trials of life. "Fly Away" makes me feel good about my own losses in life.We are all in this together.I love you after all these years, Andy!!! "Glass Angel" has an urgency that gives a dark ending to an upbeat album. I hope these guys have another great album in 2017!
What you have here is a polished, enjoyable but somewhat samey sounding album. I love this band, and I really want to love this, but it just seems like an average album to me. I guess all fans will have their favorites. I lean more towards the synthy sweetness of I Say X 3 and the ambient explorations of the Erasure album. Regardless of my thoughts on this album, I am thrilled that Vince and Andy continue to make music and tour the US.
Highlights of this release for me are Storm In A Teacup, Fly Away and When A Lover Leaves You.
THe single, I could Fall in Love is just stunning in its overproduced, electronic whirlwhind sound and feel. YOu can't sit still when it plays. Several other tracks have "potential hit" markend on them as well...Sunday Girl for instance.
If you loved older Erasure albums, but have been bored by the newer, softer sounds, this is your chance to have some fun with the boys Clarke and Bell once again.
First of all, the story is simple, yet basic to everyone. It's about finding love and embracing it to the greatest extent possible. It's about losing a passion for someone that once existed. Most of all, it's about the simplicity of pure love in a complicated world and how it can break down all barriers to conquer all.
The composers matched characters and emotions perfectly, from Clara's cries from her heart in "The Light in the Piazza" to Fabrizio's love at first site in "Love to Me". How can you not love the beginning lyrics in "Love to Me"? ("The day we meet. The way you lean against the wind, and do not know that you are beautiful.)
Or Margaret's lament in the reprise to "The Beauty Is". The lyric ("If I could, then I would paint it over. I would be there and I wouldn't turn away. If I only had a chance to not turn away... and the beauty is, and the beauty is, the beauty is.")is a statement about everyone's life and the decisions they make and regret.
Of course, "Say it Somehow" is one of the most beautiful songs about the fact that love transcends language and cultural barriers.
One reviewer missed the entire point of the Tirade scene. Clara's passion to protect her love is just that, pure passion, not checked by proprieties. It is a reaction that is understood in all languages, a reaction from the heart to someone taking her love away from her.
Thank you Adam Guettel for an album that we will enjoy for the rest of our lives. We need more musicals like this one. I am sure that it will endure the test of time. A universal story and music for the soul.
The scene where the handicapped gal implodes at a dinner party was excruciating to watch. And not in a good way. The play is fractured and confusing.
For "Piazza" afficiandos there is always hope for musicals as long as "Piazza" continues. This album is a jewel. So many of the songs are incredibly touching. I've sat through New York and Chicago performances and weeped to "Dividing Day" and watched the quiet tears of men and women in the audience. With "Piazza" love in Florence is eternal.
Victoria Clark, (God bless that North Carolina accent) O'Hare and Morrison are the definitive cast. What a collection of voices and actors.
I only hope that everyone who hears "Piazza" has the opportunity to see the performance live somewhere. It's so much more with the lighting and Italian joie de vivre including instructions to turn down your cell phones and pages in Italian.
"Telephone Line" is almost like a ballad. A real ballad, that makes you cry. "Rockaria" is an updated version of an old 50's style rocker. Good choice! "So Fine" is a typical mainstream-sounding mid to late 70's rock song. Because of ELO's talent, it's highly melodic. Everyone knows "Livin' Thing" and "Do Ya". Great songs, especially the rockin' energy of the latter.
The bonus tracks are rather sweet as well. "Surrender" RULES. I absolutely love that song. The instrumental version of "Telphone Line" is pretty awesome, too. All ELO fans should have this album.
This was also the ELO album that contained a rock classic, as Lynne resurrected "Do Ya" from his days with the move. Containing one of the greatest rock riffs every deployed from the radio, its timelessness is measured by the fact that it still shows up as an attention grabber for advertisements. (Yes, we boomers are getting old...) Along with that rock chestnut, there are also a pair of huge hit singles, "Living Thing" and the sublime "Telephone Line." "Telephone Line" even became the anchor for a Randy Newman satire on the band (on his CD, "Born Again"). It's also the moment that the flying ELO logo was introduced, an icon that is recognizable to this day.
To that end, this is a classic album from Electric Light Orchestra. The remastering may just be the best of all the ELO re-issues, since the older CD always sounded flat and muffled to these ears. Now the strings pop and swirl like they never did before (or at least since my album was retired), and especially evident on the opening of "Tightrope." (I find little to recommend concerning the bonus tracks, however.) If this was one of your AM Radio guilty pleasures in the seventies or if (like me) you blasted this out of your car stereo through 76-77, you're going to have to reset "A New World Record."
That being said, I was expecting a lot more from the bonus tracks. They're moderately interesting, but mostly amount to little more than the same tracks with the vocals subtracted. Granted, the way these great tunes were arranged is magical, but you can hear that with the vocals anyway. Where are the alternate mixes?
I have my doubts about "Surrender", the only unreleased track from the album. This sounds like it's been processed quite a bit in the studio; doesn't sound like 1976 to me. Not a standout track anyway.
Sound quality: great.
No home should be complete without it.
If you are a fan of pop you cannot..I must stress this loud and clear..YOU CANNOT BUY A BETTER ALBUM IN THE GENRE THAN THIS RECORD...so dont think...just buy..hit the add to cart button. My classical CD buying experience is limited to only a couple of dozen discs but I have found that the Naxos and Deutshe Grammophon releases are fairly safe. Avoid any release which does not name the conductors on the track listing or sleeve notes.
Any criticism of this compilation, which focuses on the quality of the performances or the fact that many tracks are excerpts, misses the point. This is not a collection for people who consider such things, nor does it purport to be. The idea is to package as many ultra-famous classical melodies as possible in one affordable collection and market it to people who have never purchased a classical recording. As such, top-tier performances are likely too expensive to be sold so cheaply and are unnecessary anyway. Those of us who already know and love a piece or two can forgive the compilers the inclusion of sub-par recordings, when we are exposed to so many other beautiful pieces for the first time.
It probably comes as a shock for some to hear that most people are not familiar with these classics. We may hear snippets on TV or movies, but are left with no idea as to the composer or historical context. With that in mind, it is extremely intimidating to begin buying classical. I suppose those among us, who so thoroughly dismissed the very notion of a boxed set like this, would have us begin by buying full albums by reputable interpreters. Surprisingly enough though, the majority of people would consider that a tad cost-prohibitive.
To conclude, this is a STARTER collection. It will either affirm a listener's feelings about classical music or lead to an interest in purchasing better recordings. Ideally, I suppose the interpretations would be better, but, for reasons mentioned above, that just isn't in the cards for a collection of this nature. If you're familiar with 50 different recordings of "The Ring" series, or have season tickets to the New York Philharmonic, then this probably isn't for you. For us cretins with limited foreknowledge of classical music though, it serves as a succinct introduction with little to complain about.
This collection includes many of Rutter's church hymns recorded over a period of 20 years performed by The Cambridge Singers, a group of Brits, that are conducted by the composer. Ergo, these performances must be considered definitive.
Many of Rutter's popular hymns are included here. "O be joyful to the Lord" and "All things bright and beautiful", a popular children's hymn done here by adults, follow "Wings of the morning" on tracks 5-7. Others you may have performed in church represented here are "O clap your hands", "Lord make me an instrument of your peace", "For the beauty of the earth", "Look at the world" and "The Lord bless you and keep you" among the 21 assembled hymns.
While The Cambridge Singers, on their Web site, identify themselves principally as an a capella group, I was pleased when I received this CD to find all the hymns supported by a full orchestra, the esteemed City of London Sinfonia. The renditions are uniformly lovely although some listeners may find the singing a bit on the white side lacking brilliance and individuality. Everything is done in keeping with Rutter's score markings and style.
The recording tends to be a little variable given the 20-plus year difference in performances. The most recent copyright listing is 2003, the same year "Wings of the morning" was published. I don't hear an appreciable difference in that recording than the others but still hear some age in older works.
If you seek a Rutter hymn collection you can't go wrong here. You have wonderful English performers mated to the composer in his more popular works. I'd recommend this without reservation to anyone seeking this collection.
I know snobs rage against popularizing classical music, but everyone deserves exposure to the beauty of song. I will also mention here "The East Village Opera Company" because they work to popularize opera by setting it to a rock beat. They do a fine job but also get criticized for attempting to popularize classical music.
"The Best Choral Album in the World...Ever" was so popular with my teen-age daughter that it was hard to get it back from her. I give the album as a gift to nephews and nieces.
The peices are well-performed for the most part, but they are hopelessly edited. Beethoven's Ode to Joy is somewhere around twenty four minutes, but this CD only includes an arrangement of about five minutes. The beautiful Miserere is, uncut, almost eleven minutes but is cut down to five and a half minutes here.
Looking back, I should have realized the major editing that would be involved, just by the sheer number of peices on it. I'm familiar with a great many of them and I know they're too long to fit onto a seventy minute disc without some major cutting going on. I just didn't reason that out before I shelled out the money for it.
Bottom line. This CD has decent singing, but is nothing special. If you're a newcomer to this genre, you might get this as a quick overview of the different types of choral music out there, but if you're any kind of an avid listener, this CD will drive you insane with the severity of the cuts. Beginners, if you're looking for a great collection CD, you'd do better to look at "Choral Moods". It doesn't have the diversity in styles of this one, but it will introduce you to incredibly talented composers. To the old hats out there, steer clear of this one and look to CD's by your preferred individual composers themselves. It's more money, but much less frustration in the long run. The old sayings are sometimes the best: You get what you pay for.

More upbeat and peppy than "Nightbird" (which I also loved), "Light at the End of the World" sounds like a cross between "Cowboy" and "Wild!" to me -- with a little bit of "Chorus" and "I Say I Say I Say" thrown in for good measure. "Sucker For Love" sounds like an updated version of "La Gloria", and it's even more fun. "Sunday Girl" is a perfect synthpop masterpiece. "I Could Fall In Love With You" puts me in mind of "Don't Say Your Love Is Killing Me", and so it goes on with all Vince's vintage bleeps, buzzes, and knob-twiddling. By the way, if you've got quick ears, you'll also here echoes of "Always", "Treasure", "Snappy", "Crown of Thorns", and even "March On Down The Line". Listen closely! :)
It sounds like he's dusted off some of the old analog keyboards and sequencers, to great effect. Andy's vocals are in tip-top shape, only stretched a little on the deepest notes (like the notes he used to lose himself in so beautifully on "You Surround Me"). A fantastic album, and it couldn't come at a better time.

After something of a departure--two live discs and the unplugged Union Street (2006)--Erasure returns to full electronic form. From the languid opening wash of "Sunday Girl," Andy Bell and Vince Clarke make no bones about wearing old hats. Most of Light at the End of the World works within the familiar confines of the vintage Erasure formula, drunk on everyman synthesizers, listing through painfully vague and obvious rhymes. ("I get really repetitive because I don't read enough!" Bell admits.) Backed a long-studied love of pop, gospel, and the dance floor, Bell and Clarke revel in this stuff. "Sucker for Love" and "Fly Away" dabble most obviously in such pap, but the band still packs a few surprises, if only for the devoted. "Storm in a Teacup" tackles the alcoholism of Bell's mother in a rare confluence of straightforward storytelling and concrete imagery, and despite being an insincerely fictitious character study, "Darlene" moves with a syncopated, driving bounce that Erasure has rarely, if ever, found in 22 years of mid-tempo electro-meandering. A revival of sort back to the day of glitteringly produced synth pop that your granny may tap her feet to. "Sucker for Love" really revives this almost forgotten style. They were the first openly gay band who sold really well. Now,being out, "drags" bands down.(no pun intended)
Most of the songs work really well. Andy Bell keeps it personal, sharing his trials of life. "Fly Away" makes me feel good about my own losses in life.We are all in this together.I love you after all these years, Andy!!! "Glass Angel" has an urgency that gives a dark ending to an upbeat album. I hope these guys have another great album in 2017!

What you have here is a polished, enjoyable but somewhat samey sounding album. I love this band, and I really want to love this, but it just seems like an average album to me. I guess all fans will have their favorites. I lean more towards the synthy sweetness of I Say X 3 and the ambient explorations of the Erasure album. Regardless of my thoughts on this album, I am thrilled that Vince and Andy continue to make music and tour the US.
Highlights of this release for me are Storm In A Teacup, Fly Away and When A Lover Leaves You.

THe single, I could Fall in Love is just stunning in its overproduced, electronic whirlwhind sound and feel. YOu can't sit still when it plays. Several other tracks have "potential hit" markend on them as well...Sunday Girl for instance.
If you loved older Erasure albums, but have been bored by the newer, softer sounds, this is your chance to have some fun with the boys Clarke and Bell once again.

Like a shimmering pearl, The Light in the Piazza emerged from a sea of revivals, rehashings, and movie adaptations to secure 11 2005 Tony nominations, including Best Musical. Based on an Elizabeth Spencer novella (which was also made into a 1962 film), it follows a mother, Margaret (Victoria Clark), and her daughter, Clara (Kelli O'Hara), as they take a vacation to Italy. There, Clara and a young Italian (Matthew Morrison) fall in love, but Margaret is determined to keep them apart.The Light in the Piazza doesn't fit the model of most Broadway scores, with a splashy opener here, a swing number there, then the big ballad. The score is more of a unified whole, sometimes jarring, sometimes following the patterns of speech, and sometimes unfolding in glorious sheens of sound. (Heck, some of it's even in Italian!) In that sense, it's similar to another unconventional American musical set in Italy, Stephen Sondheim's Passion, which is more chamber opera than musical, and composer-lyricist Adam Guettel (song of Mary Rodgers, grandson of Richard Rodgers) seems the most likely heir apparent to Sondheim in the current generation of musical theater creators. O'Hara's voice soars in the score's most beautiful moments ("Say It Somehow," the title song), but Clark enjoys two exquisitely lyrical moments with "Dividing Day" and "Let's Walk." Will endure long after we are gone..........2007-07-31
First of all, the story is simple, yet basic to everyone. It's about finding love and embracing it to the greatest extent possible. It's about losing a passion for someone that once existed. Most of all, it's about the simplicity of pure love in a complicated world and how it can break down all barriers to conquer all.
The composers matched characters and emotions perfectly, from Clara's cries from her heart in "The Light in the Piazza" to Fabrizio's love at first site in "Love to Me". How can you not love the beginning lyrics in "Love to Me"? ("The day we meet. The way you lean against the wind, and do not know that you are beautiful.)
Or Margaret's lament in the reprise to "The Beauty Is". The lyric ("If I could, then I would paint it over. I would be there and I wouldn't turn away. If I only had a chance to not turn away... and the beauty is, and the beauty is, the beauty is.")is a statement about everyone's life and the decisions they make and regret.
Of course, "Say it Somehow" is one of the most beautiful songs about the fact that love transcends language and cultural barriers.
One reviewer missed the entire point of the Tirade scene. Clara's passion to protect her love is just that, pure passion, not checked by proprieties. It is a reaction that is understood in all languages, a reaction from the heart to someone taking her love away from her.
Thank you Adam Guettel for an album that we will enjoy for the rest of our lives. We need more musicals like this one. I am sure that it will endure the test of time. A universal story and music for the soul.

For "Piazza" afficiandos there is always hope for musicals as long as "Piazza" continues. This album is a jewel. So many of the songs are incredibly touching. I've sat through New York and Chicago performances and weeped to "Dividing Day" and watched the quiet tears of men and women in the audience. With "Piazza" love in Florence is eternal.
Victoria Clark, (God bless that North Carolina accent) O'Hare and Morrison are the definitive cast. What a collection of voices and actors.
I only hope that everyone who hears "Piazza" has the opportunity to see the performance live somewhere. It's so much more with the lighting and Italian joie de vivre including instructions to turn down your cell phones and pages in Italian.

what a great ELO album.......2007-07-30
"Telephone Line" is almost like a ballad. A real ballad, that makes you cry. "Rockaria" is an updated version of an old 50's style rocker. Good choice! "So Fine" is a typical mainstream-sounding mid to late 70's rock song. Because of ELO's talent, it's highly melodic. Everyone knows "Livin' Thing" and "Do Ya". Great songs, especially the rockin' energy of the latter.
The bonus tracks are rather sweet as well. "Surrender" RULES. I absolutely love that song. The instrumental version of "Telphone Line" is pretty awesome, too. All ELO fans should have this album.
Fading like The Beatles on "Hey Jude.".......2007-05-16
This was also the ELO album that contained a rock classic, as Lynne resurrected "Do Ya" from his days with the move. Containing one of the greatest rock riffs every deployed from the radio, its timelessness is measured by the fact that it still shows up as an attention grabber for advertisements. (Yes, we boomers are getting old...) Along with that rock chestnut, there are also a pair of huge hit singles, "Living Thing" and the sublime "Telephone Line." "Telephone Line" even became the anchor for a Randy Newman satire on the band (on his CD, "Born Again"). It's also the moment that the flying ELO logo was introduced, an icon that is recognizable to this day.
To that end, this is a classic album from Electric Light Orchestra. The remastering may just be the best of all the ELO re-issues, since the older CD always sounded flat and muffled to these ears. Now the strings pop and swirl like they never did before (or at least since my album was retired), and especially evident on the opening of "Tightrope." (I find little to recommend concerning the bonus tracks, however.) If this was one of your AM Radio guilty pleasures in the seventies or if (like me) you blasted this out of your car stereo through 76-77, you're going to have to reset "A New World Record."
Buy it, but not for the bonus tracks.......2007-03-02
That being said, I was expecting a lot more from the bonus tracks. They're moderately interesting, but mostly amount to little more than the same tracks with the vocals subtracted. Granted, the way these great tunes were arranged is magical, but you can hear that with the vocals anyway. Where are the alternate mixes?
I have my doubts about "Surrender", the only unreleased track from the album. This sounds like it's been processed quite a bit in the studio; doesn't sound like 1976 to me. Not a standout track anyway.
Sound quality: great.
No home should be complete without it.

My classical CD buying experience is limited to only a couple of dozen discs but I have found that the Naxos and Deutshe Grammophon releases are fairly safe. Avoid any release which does not name the conductors on the track listing or sleeve notes.
It Is What It Is.......2006-10-27
Any criticism of this compilation, which focuses on the quality of the performances or the fact that many tracks are excerpts, misses the point. This is not a collection for people who consider such things, nor does it purport to be. The idea is to package as many ultra-famous classical melodies as possible in one affordable collection and market it to people who have never purchased a classical recording. As such, top-tier performances are likely too expensive to be sold so cheaply and are unnecessary anyway. Those of us who already know and love a piece or two can forgive the compilers the inclusion of sub-par recordings, when we are exposed to so many other beautiful pieces for the first time.
It probably comes as a shock for some to hear that most people are not familiar with these classics. We may hear snippets on TV or movies, but are left with no idea as to the composer or historical context. With that in mind, it is extremely intimidating to begin buying classical. I suppose those among us, who so thoroughly dismissed the very notion of a boxed set like this, would have us begin by buying full albums by reputable interpreters. Surprisingly enough though, the majority of people would consider that a tad cost-prohibitive.
To conclude, this is a STARTER collection. It will either affirm a listener's feelings about classical music or lead to an interest in purchasing better recordings. Ideally, I suppose the interpretations would be better, but, for reasons mentioned above, that just isn't in the cards for a collection of this nature. If you're familiar with 50 different recordings of "The Ring" series, or have season tickets to the New York Philharmonic, then this probably isn't for you. For us cretins with limited foreknowledge of classical music though, it serves as a succinct introduction with little to complain about.

An outstanding collection of Rutter's hymns.......2005-11-22
This collection includes many of Rutter's church hymns recorded over a period of 20 years performed by The Cambridge Singers, a group of Brits, that are conducted by the composer. Ergo, these performances must be considered definitive.
Many of Rutter's popular hymns are included here. "O be joyful to the Lord" and "All things bright and beautiful", a popular children's hymn done here by adults, follow "Wings of the morning" on tracks 5-7. Others you may have performed in church represented here are "O clap your hands", "Lord make me an instrument of your peace", "For the beauty of the earth", "Look at the world" and "The Lord bless you and keep you" among the 21 assembled hymns.
While The Cambridge Singers, on their Web site, identify themselves principally as an a capella group, I was pleased when I received this CD to find all the hymns supported by a full orchestra, the esteemed City of London Sinfonia. The renditions are uniformly lovely although some listeners may find the singing a bit on the white side lacking brilliance and individuality. Everything is done in keeping with Rutter's score markings and style.
The recording tends to be a little variable given the 20-plus year difference in performances. The most recent copyright listing is 2003, the same year "Wings of the morning" was published. I don't hear an appreciable difference in that recording than the others but still hear some age in older works.
If you seek a Rutter hymn collection you can't go wrong here. You have wonderful English performers mated to the composer in his more popular works. I'd recommend this without reservation to anyone seeking this collection.

Cassandra Wilson is a postmodern jazz singer, a conceptualist who sees no dividing lines between genres. If her career had commenced in the 1970s rather than the label-conscious 1990s she would have been marketed as a mainstream pop diva. Her magnificent voice and interpretive genius mark her as a jazz singer for the ages, however. She finds her material wherever her fancy takes her and remakes it in her own image, whether it be the country blues of Robert Johnson's "Come On in My Kitchen" and "Hellhound On My Trail," the soul of Ann Peebles's "I Can't Stand the Rain," the elegant R&B of Charles Brown's "Tell Me You'll Wait for Me," the melodic pop of Joni Mitchell's "Black Crow," and Van Morrison's "Tupelo Honey," or her own "Redbone"--and the title track, accompanied by steel guitarist Gib Wharton. --John SwensonCustomer Reviews:

This one is what I would describe as late night music, the kind of thing that you put on when you have arrived home having drunk rather too much, and want to hear something clear and pure to clear your head.
My favorite track on this is the Robert Johnson number Hellhound On My Trail, which is beautifully done with solo guitar accompaniment. I would like to have heard more of Ms. Wilson in this mode, but this album is a bit of a sampler--eclectic if you like--mixing blues, jazz and country, with violins creeping in every now and again.
Not a bad album at all, but I suspect that Ms. Wilson is capable of an even better one, so I reserve judgement a bit. I also have a feeling, and this is just a hunch, that this album may appeal more to female listeners than to the guys.
My star rating system goes like this:
5 stars--an absolute classic
4 stars--the artist is on top form here, a good buy
3 stars--fans of this artist should enjoy this album
2 stars--some good stuff, but inconsistent
1 star--just not good enough

I know snobs rage against popularizing classical music, but everyone deserves exposure to the beauty of song. I will also mention here "The East Village Opera Company" because they work to popularize opera by setting it to a rock beat. They do a fine job but also get criticized for attempting to popularize classical music.
"The Best Choral Album in the World...Ever" was so popular with my teen-age daughter that it was hard to get it back from her. I give the album as a gift to nephews and nieces.

The peices are well-performed for the most part, but they are hopelessly edited. Beethoven's Ode to Joy is somewhere around twenty four minutes, but this CD only includes an arrangement of about five minutes. The beautiful Miserere is, uncut, almost eleven minutes but is cut down to five and a half minutes here.
Looking back, I should have realized the major editing that would be involved, just by the sheer number of peices on it. I'm familiar with a great many of them and I know they're too long to fit onto a seventy minute disc without some major cutting going on. I just didn't reason that out before I shelled out the money for it.
Bottom line. This CD has decent singing, but is nothing special. If you're a newcomer to this genre, you might get this as a quick overview of the different types of choral music out there, but if you're any kind of an avid listener, this CD will drive you insane with the severity of the cuts. Beginners, if you're looking for a great collection CD, you'd do better to look at "Choral Moods". It doesn't have the diversity in styles of this one, but it will introduce you to incredibly talented composers. To the old hats out there, steer clear of this one and look to CD's by your preferred individual composers themselves. It's more money, but much less frustration in the long run. The old sayings are sometimes the best: You get what you pay for.
