5 out of 5 stars Superb sound, a great legacy of 2 fine singers.......2006-05-16

"Rose of Washington Square" was a large scale production in 1939 by 20th Century Fox, starring its 2 biggest box office stars, Alice Faye and Tyrone Power. The film was a thinly disguised tale of the life of Fanny Brice and Brice sued the studio for plagiarism. The story appeared as "Funny Girl" with Streisand in the sixties.

The film underwent severe editing and at least 4 songs were cut from the released print. This CD contains the complete score for the film with alternate takes, deleted songs and the numbers which appear in the film but without disruptive dialogue. It is interesting that so much fine music did not appear in the released film.

The recordings are crystal clear and both Faye and Al Jolson sound fantastic. The CD is an unexpected treasure and maybe the best legacy of the talents of Faye and Jolson.

You don't need to know the film to appreciate the music.

5 out of 5 stars Jolson at his best; Faye also great.......2001-04-29

The CD is simply great. Jolson, in 1939, was in the best voice of his career. His "Rock-a-Bye," "California," and "April Showers" are among his best ever renditions. Alice Faye did not have a great voice, but had a sweet tone and a distinctive style. Her rendition of "My Man," "I Never Knew Heaven Could Speak," and title song- great. And it's a treat to have the outtakes, with alternate versions of some of the songs.

        5 out of 5 stars A great soundtrack.......2000-08-14

This CD features Alice Faye and Al Jolson at their best and most memorable. Jolson sounds great singing his signature songs. Faye is equally good, especially during "My Man," "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows," and "I'm Just Wild About Harry". Sadly, Faye ceased recording in 1937 due to contractual restrictions, so listening to her in this soundtrack is particularly pleasant. Hopefully Varese Sarabande will also release the soundtracks of other Alice Faye films, especially "Alexander's Ragtime Band" and "Hello, Frisco, Hello" (which includes her signature song "You'll Never Know") in the nearby future.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Surprise! Wonderful performances by Faye & Jolson!.......1999-11-14

This new soundtrack release is taken directly from the original ROSE OF WASHINGTON SQ soundtrack source materials located at the Fox Studios. Its amazing how fresh these recordings sound after 60 years! Most of the songs were standards when the movie was in production. Only one new song was written for the film, I NEVER KNEW HEAVEN COULD SPEAK, sung by Alice Faye. I have not heard Al Jolson sound better singing some of his standards like CALIFORNIA HERE I COME and ROCK A BYE YOUR BABY WITH A DIXIE MELODY. Alice Faye sounds wonderful singing MY MAN, I'M ALWAYS CHASING RAINBOWS and the title tune. To round out the collection several outakes and alternates versions of the songs are included. Apparently the recording standards on Hollywood sound stages were much higher than those of record studios at the time sime the sound is remarkabe. Lets hope Varese/Fox can come up with more classic winners like this. Perhaps a Betty Grable series or more Alice Faye?

This is the only live record that exists from this amazing 3 piece band that played a pseudo rockabily-type music. Their sound fit well with fans of the Beat Farmers, Stray Cats, and alike. I would get their self-titled studio album as well. This is a treat!

          4 out of 5 stars Good tunes.......2004-07-17

I just started listening to Pat McGee awhile ago when I heard kids my age talking about them coming to town. At first I wasn't too impressed with their music. It seemed too country for me, but after listening to Shine for awhile I've begun to like the band. Now I'm trying to get all their cd's. Pat McGee is really great.

          5 out of 5 stars terrific.......2003-08-16

i saw these guys live in the spring, and they were amazing, but sometimes that doesn't translate to studio recordings (note OAR's first 3 cd's, DMB's first however many cd's, etc.), but this recording captures some of their live prowess while still being clean and concise. great songs, great music...if you like VACO/OAR/DMB/Georgia Avenue/Dispatch, try this out

          5 out of 5 stars Just awesome!!.......2002-04-26

I heard Pat McGee Band for the first time in college, and have been in love ever since! This is the first album I owned, and while they are all great, it holds a special place in my heart! Pat McGee Band is one of the best-kept screts in the music business, and although I hope they get the success they deserve, some of us old fans selfishly would love to keep them to ourselves! This is great acoustic music with great songs and clever lyrics, and talented musicians- the best songs are "Passion," "Rebecca" and "Flooding the Both of Us." Buy it today, you won't regret it!

          2 out of 5 stars Average.......2000-08-05

I heard these guys for the first time in '96 in Richmond. I thought they were so-so but decided to give Revel a try. I bought Revel during the first release in '97 (I don't know where Amazon came up with 1999) to see if I missed something. I didn't. They really are pretty cheesy (I can't think of a better word). As for the sax player, he's with Agents of Good Roots now; a band where he belongs and shines. My cd has been collecting dust ever since.

5 out of 5 stars Great chillin' CD.......2000-07-12

A buddy of mine got me into the Pat McGee Band. Give this CD a listens and you won't want to stop, especially if your mood is mellow. Perfect for the car trip, the boat, or just sitting around on the deck/patio.

Let's put it this way - I'm a fan of Buddy Guy, Phish, and a lot of classic rock n' roll and love this CD........well, my mother, who would prefer to listen to Barbara Streisand, Phantom of the Opera, Les Mis, West Side Story, etc., etc., etc., also loves this CD. She was asking me, "who is this? ", so she could be the CD. Overall, the CD is very relaxing with some very catchy tunes.

My personal favorites are Passion, Rebecca(although the version on "From the Wood" is the best), All Around Us, Ceamelodic(the catchiest IMO), and On Your Way Out of Here. Give it a try!

5 out of 5 stars Why have I just now heard of them?!.......2007-05-05

How this is not more popular I do not know, given the Post-Punk revival of late, this should be on your list. The first track Terraplane Fixation sent chills down my spine and a burning in my bosom. Sure the production is rough, but that is how it should be. As the sticker on the front says if you like Delta 5 (and I would add Gang of Four, Au Paris and Bush Tetras) you will love this.
