About the Artist
A brilliant, poetic singer/songwriter, his work displayed a deep spirituality and an honesty to the human condition uncommon in CCM. Heard died in 1992 of heart failure. Home Sweet Home Records is grateful to have produced eight recordings of Mark, mainly thru the mid-80's. As any who knew him or have listened to his music will tell you, Mark Heard was truly a treasure in a broken land. He stands not only as one of the most brilliant and profound songwriters for almost twenty years, but also as a man of great personal integrity.

Hanson Conducts Again.......2005-10-10

Those familiar with my reviews on Amazon know of my great love for the Mercury Living Presence series. Equally great is my disgust that so many of these brilliant recordings have been deleted in the last few years! Thankfully, some of these legendary performances are resurfacing, and while the single disc titles are unfortunately listed at full-price, it is wonderful to see the various multi-disc sets basically being sold at budget line. With this 4CD reissue, Howard Hanson's legendary MLP recordings of his own music are restored to the catalog, as two of the original three CDs -- one that collected Symphony No. 3 with "Elegy" and The Lament for Beowulf," and the other the Piano Concerto with "Merry Mount Suite," "Mosaics" and "For The First Time" -- were out-of-print. The music is wonderful, showcasing a sadly unappreciated American composer conducting his own works, but this set does have a few non-musical problems in my opinion. First, a single SACD Hybrid of Symphonies 1 & 2 was just released a few months back and surely some people already bought it. Also, like the original second disc from the set featuring the Piano Concerto and other pieces, CD4 from this collection features Hanson's insightful comments over excerpts from "Merry Mount Suite," "Mosaics" and "For The First Time." This is certainly informative material, but it doesn't necessarily warrant repeated listenings and certainly doesn't need to be factored into the price of this set. Since we are getting three CDs of music, we should pay for three CDs of music, not four! Despite these shortcomings, overall this is an attractive package -- glorious golden age stereo recordings returned to the catalog at a very reasonable price. Once again, Mercury Living Presence lives!

Howard Hanson (1896-1981) is one of the most popular composers of the 20th Century in the USA. He rejected the serialism and atonalism of his time and continuted writing warm, romantic, music long after it ceased to be fashionable among 'serious' composers, drawing strongly on his Nordic roots.

Sadly, he has never really established a reputation on this side of the Atlantic. If this fantastic twofer CD gets more of airing though, that could all change.

If people know anything by Hanson, it's most likely to be the Second Movement of the Second Symphony, which was used as the theme for the film Alien. The Second Symphony is his most popular piece with American audiences and with it's warm, rich, harmonies and many delightful passages, especially on horns, it's not hard to see why.

Three other symphonies are in this collection of which the outstanding one is the semi-choral Seventh, "A Sea Symphony".

A number of other pieces fill the CD, with the pick of the bunch being the deeply moving and clearly personal Elegy for Hanson's friend Serge Koussevitzky. Koussevitzky championed Hansons' music as chief conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to anyone who likes late-romantic music (think of a warmer Sibelius or a mellower Mahler) or is interested in the music of the USA. I also hope that Hanson will start to get his due recognition in the concert halls of this continent

An Essential American Classic.......2002-05-26

Howard Hanson (1897-1981) was one of the most significant American composers of his generation. Unfortunately, he has been largely forgotten today as a result of the romantic style of his earlier music, and his refusal to adopt a more modern musical style in his later works. He has been called the American version of Rachmaninoff.

This excellent double-cd brings together some of Hanson's most loved symphonic works. The first: the Second Symphony ("Romantic") is perhaps his best-known work. But more importantly are some of the later works, better represented by the haunting Elegy (in memory of Koussevitsky), and the Fourth and Sixth Symphonies. The Fourth Symphony ("Requiem") is an incredible work, and the Sixth a tour-de-force that shows how in his later work Hanson had gone beyond neo-romanticism to forge a more modern style uniquely his own.

At his best, Hanson's music is forceful, profound, deeply human and vulnerable. If you are at all interested in Twentieth Century American symphonic works, you really must have this wonderful set from Delos. These are essential American classics, must have music. Even if your tastes are more for the avant garde stuff, you will still admire the depth of this composer's music.

I hadn't previously heard any of Hanson's music except for the "Romantic", but on the basis of that symphony I bought this double CD set. I'm glad I did! The music is wonderful and is brilliantly played and the "Romantic" is as arresting as ever. I can highly recommend this as an introduction to Hanson's music for anyone who likes classical music. It's from the 20th century, but it's as lovely and stirring as Schumann and Brahms!

Howard Hanson is one of America's great mid-century composers. His music, like that of Roy Harris, draws its character from the plains, from the pioneer blood that settled that part of the country. Here we have two major symphonies, a piano concerto, and a tone-poem, "Mosaics". These works are at the heart of American Romanticism; his melodies are distinct and tonal, his writing formal. He's not as idiosyncratic as Roy Harris or as buoyant as Copland and his music never went into other areas of 20th- century experimentation. The High Priests of Brass.......2000-05-29

This recording marks the 40th Anniversary of the American Brass Quintet. What better way to celebrate than to release a disc of a typical concert program - have a second CD of brass quintets (Dahl, Sanders, Carter, Whittenburg) in the works for release later this year - perform their latest commissions of Melinda Wagner, David Sampson, Henri Lazarof, and Anthony Plog - and celebrate 30 years of residence at the Aspen Music School and Festival. The playing is immaculate. The repertoire is diverse as ever. This recording represents 40 years of the best in brass chamber music.

One of the 10 best Christian albums ever.......2002-12-17

This one is a masterpiece. Alongside "Dry Bones Dance" and "Second Hand" and "Tribal Opera" (as Ideola) Mark's work is above and beyond virtually everyone in the Christian market. From our perspective, it's an absolute shame that he's gone. Songs like "I Want You" and "With Broken Wings" and "I Know It Will Not Be Like This Forever" still stand the test of time. Very few Christian writers pen such honest, cut-to-the heart lyrics without being preachy. My only hope is that the new CD's contain all the original interviews and writings that the LP's had. Don't pass on the opportunity to buy this one!!

Under-Appreciated and Overlooked!.......2002-07-04

The album "Mosaics" has definitely been under-appreciated and overlooked for too long, even by Mark Heard standards. What a blessing that it's finally been re-released.

"A music fan" from Pittsburgh is right -- this is where Mark starts to hit his stride on the way to the brilliant trio of albums released in 1990-92 before his untimely death. This is a bridge between his earlier acoustic days and the frenetic roots rock of the later albums "Dry Bones Dance" and "Satellite Sky."

Don't overlook this release... there's a bucket-load of great writing and catchy music here which is still relevant today. (Check out the cover of the T-Bone Burnette classic "Power of Love"!)

Catch this album before it, too, disappears from our sight and goes home to the Father!

One of the best.......2002-06-21

Mark Heard was one of the best singer/songwriters in the late-20th Century. Too Christian for the mainstream market and too earthy for the CCM market, he was one of the very few sublime artists. Mosaics and Dry Bones Dance are his best. While sometimes he could soar high, he could also walk through the abyss of the Fall. It is a shame he left us so early.

His first great album!.......2001-09-19

Up until this album Mark Heard hadn't really found his own voice. He was a great lyricist, but musically, he seemed to write tunes that were 'knock-offs' of artists that influenced him. A little Neil Young here ("Lonely One" from STOP THE DOMINOES), a little Lindsey Buckingham there ("Standing At the Station" from the same album), and a LOT of James Taylor (almost everything else!)

But with MOSAICS (1985) he began really to do his own thing. A brilliant electric folk album with nine great songs and only one so-so one (the somewhat banal 'Golden Age'), this would be the one "older" Mark Heard album I'd recommend to folks who didn't catch up with him till DRY BONES DANCE or after. If you like SATELLITE SKY, you'll probably like this too, although the songs are less folky in their construction and have a bit more of a Byrds feel to them. Fans of 80's jangly stuff ought to dig it immensely, and at times it's even a little gutsier than some of that stuff was, occasionally approaching the energy level of some of Springsteen's material.

One negative note on this release is that unfortunately, the CD liner doesn't contain the lyrics and notes that the LP did. But I guess we should just be grateful for a CD reissue after fifteen years. About time I say, especially for a great singer/songwriter who is sorely missed.

His last great album.......2001-08-12

Four and one half stars. There are some excellent songs on this album. There are a few duds - but you don't buy an album for the duds anyway. Sophisticated modern rock with a folk feel. Buy it.
