Editorial Reviews
Completed by George Harrison's son Dhani and Jeff Lynne (Traveling Wilburys, Cloud Nine) after the ex-Beatle succumbed to a long illness in November 2001, Brainwashed is a bittersweet reminder of the myriad contradictions that made Harrison such a compelling figure. One of the most warm, melodically rich albums in a career pockmarked by personal frankness and professional indifference in its latter years, Harrison finds rewarding ways here to reconcile bitter assessments of the material world (the title track) with more fleshly concerns, as his jaunty take on the Arlen-Koehler chestnut "The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" ably demonstrates. Pushing the singer's distinctive dry voice to the forefront, and with Harrison's trademark slide guitar riffs as sinewy as ever, Lynne's showcase production is mostly spot-on and refreshingly restrained, while Dhani brings his own fresh, touchingly personal insights to the record. He double-tracked his own voice onto an old recording of his father chanting the traditional "Namah Parvati" and appended it as the album's spiritual benediction, a touching reminder that while musicians come and go, music can truly embody their spirit forever. --Jerry McCulley

Until its shallow posturing gets to be just too much, Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too is fodder for a decent game of Spot the Influence. Singer/songwriter Gregg Alexander's admittedly well-crafted project is indebted to the vaguely funky pop-rock of World Party. But despite airplay for the single "You Get What You Give," he isn't tuneful enough to make his empty social pronouncements stick as more than fleeting entertainment, and when he starts dissing his hooky betters Courtney Love and Beck as "fakes," there's little to do but laugh. At him, not with him. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

This I GReat.......2007-07-27
Last effort.......2007-07-24
This is that album. If you like George Harrison, then you owe it to yourself to listen to this. "Brainwashed" is George Harrison in his final essence, when he knew that he would only get one last chance.
Brainwashed.......2007-06-04
"Any Road" begins this final George Harrison chapter with enthusiasm, and 'plenty of that guitar' as the man sayes. Nothing new or extravagant, just the good old kind of song that George was best at: sweet and simple. Next comes my favorite, "P2 Vatican Blues". Sounds like an old rock n roll song from the beginning of the era, but Harrison sings the lyrics in his own recognizable way and this track-too-short becomes an instant favorite. Sort of one of those unknown pieces that nobody knows about but which is ultimately always better that the greatest hits. "Pices Fish" is calm and seems contemplative to me. Among other favorites is #6 "Marwa Blues" which is totally instrumental and pleasant, and ukulalea laden "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea". "Stuck Inside a Cloud" is also very accomodating for George's unique voice.
On the whole, there could never be a better ending chapter to George Harrison's prolific life of music. A fine farewell if ever there was one, and for such a cheap buy, its just too good to pass up. I would suggest it even to novice Harrison listeners. Enjoy it forever.
Excellent last album.......2007-03-25
"Give me plenty of that guitar!".......2007-02-23
"Brainwashed", sadly George Harrison's posthumous project is an excellent album with all 12 songs warm, sparkling, and melodious, some of them have been among my all time favorites since I bought the CD when it was first released: "Rising Sun", "Marwa Blues", "Never Get Over You", the opening song "Any Road", and of course, the one which gave the album its title, "Brainwashed". I have not listened to the CD for some time and I have been re-discovering it for the last few days. I can't get enough of it. I keep listening to the songs in my car, on my way to work and back and since it takes me 40-45 minutes of driving one way, I am able to enjoy the favorite songs over and over again. They are the songs about love, about the roads that take you anywhere, the journey of self-discovery, the look at the past and sorrow of losses - everything is in George's last album, his parting gift to us, to me. It is his last smile at the sun that he worshipped and his quiet and dignified acceptance of inevitable end, and knowledge that "The soul does not love. It is love itself/It does not exist. It is existence/It does not know. It is knowledge itself."
"Brainwashed" is one of the best albums of my favorite musician whose guitar will never stop gently talking to me.

Saved his Best for Last.......2007-06-08

3.5 stars - a fitting end to his career.......2004-01-11
After George Harrison reissued his classic album All Things Must Pass, rumors spread that he was recording a new album. Unfortunately, he died of brain cancer on November 29, 2001, and these rumors were forgotten. But, in 2002, these rumors were turned into solid fact - the new album, Brainwashed, was finally released. Harrison's Traveling Wilburys bandmate and former Electric Light Orchestra frontman Jeff Lynne helped to complete the album following his death. How does Harrison's final album measure up? Read on for my review of Brainwashed.
The album kicks off with the pop-rocker Any Road. This song was a very good choice for the album starter, because it's nothing short of excellent. My personal favorite track on the album is the second one, P2 Vatican Blues (Last Saturday Night.) This is classic-styled rock as only Harrison could do, and it's a shame this song will probably never get the proper credit. The ultra-slow and melodic Pisces Fish comes next. Once again, this is a very good track. Harrison even serves up an instrumental, which is entitled Marwa Blues. It's a shame he didn't do more instrumentals, because this one really captures his ability to make music well. Also, as you may have heard Paul McCartney say in the Concert For George CD/DVD, Harrison was a fan of the ukulele. And in The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea, it's the main instrument. It's a "happy" little tune that is quite good. The album closes with the title track, Brainwashed. This track has some good lyrics in that they are both funny and will make you think, but unfortunately, the lyric delivery is poor due to Harrison's diminishing health. That's a shame, because the song had true potential. Still, it's a good song despite this. Overall, this is a pretty good album.
Brainwashed was a very good way for Harrison to end his musical career. However, if you're just getting into Harrison's music for the first time, this isn't that good of a starting point. All Things Must Pass should be the first Harrison album any new fan buys. Also, there is a special edition version of this album which features a bonus "making of" DVD, as well as some other little features not included with this, the standard edition. If you're a Harrison die-hard, get the special version. If you just want the album for the music, get the standard version. George Harrison was a musical making genius - may he rest in peace.

All Things Must Pass should be the first Harrison album any new fan buys (don't bother with the so-called "Best of George Harrison" that covers from 1965-1975 - that compilation isn't very good.. George was a musical making genius - may he rest in peace.
WOW.......2004-04-23
Brain washed, dryed and soothed.......2003-01-02
Stuck Inside a Cloud.......2002-12-15
George Harrison's "BRAINWASHED" is his first solo record in 15 years (since 1987's "CLOUD NINE"), and while it also carries the stigma of being another posthumous album in a sea of "last" albums, it has none of the "finish it off, slap it out for christmas" characterizations that plague many other releases. BRAINWASHED was lovingly completed by George's son, Dhani, and his longtime collaberator/friend JEFF LYNNE. The trio together have crafted an album of such beauty and integrity that, BRAINWASHED is the career bookend to Harrison's ALL THINGS MUST PASS released over 30 years ago. The elder Harrison confronts his own mortality on songs like "Pisces Fish", "Looking For My Life", "Rising Sun" and "Stuck Inside A Cloud", and embraces all life on "Any Road" whilst simultaneously criticising the material lust of the western civilization on "Brainwashed" the record's title track. All the trademark Harrison elements are here; The chiming guitars; the liquid leads; the sardonic lyrics; the gorgeous harmonies; and yes...the Hindu mysticism. Speaking of material lust in the western civilzation...buy this disc already!!!
