For all Greg Dulli's earnestness and thorough self-deprecation, maybe he and the Afghan Whigs just showed up to the post-punk, soul-tinted party a little early. Beyond the nervy-edged guitar riffage of "Retarded" and Dulli's muted, growly vocal, there isn't a whole lot on this retrospective to suggest that the Whigs couldn't just appear in 2007 and be hugely popular. The big-guitar and piano combination on "What Jail Is Like" and Dulli's unmistakable presence as a singer rekindle the listener's desire that the Whigs get solidly beyond niche-level acceptance. Dulli's astringent lyrics are centrally important throughout the band's oeuvre and stand out here (witness the heartfelt vocal tug of "Be Sweet" get countered by the famous "I got a dick for a brain" line). The Whigs are believably radio-ready--especially after so many male singer/songwriters have confessed to so much on the FM dial. As for this 18-song collection, fans will quibble over song selections. What they'll agree on is that the two new tracks, "I'm a Soldier" and "Magazine," both slow(er) and groovy, could make great strides for a new Whigs' era--which is apparently unlikely, given Dulli's commitment to the Twilight Singers. --Andrew BartlettAlbum Description
Nothing sounds quite like their raw, unflinching music, which as amassed a large and loyal cult following over the years. This is their first ever compilation and is an extraordinary portrait of one of American rock's most distinctive bands.Customer Reviews:
Absolutely Fantastic.......2007-06-17
Amazing stuff here - fans will always quibble about the tracklistings of compilations, but this is a superb look back at perhaps the most underrated band of all time. Super selection of songs hand-picked by Greg and bassist John Curley. Outstanding packaging by Rhino with nice liner notes and cool rare photographs from throughout the band's run. If this is your introduction to the Afghan Whigs, congratulations. I envy you. After you round out your AW collection take a nice, long pull from Greg Dulli's Twilight Singers and Rick McCollum's Moon Maan. You will not be disappointed!
Impeccable overview of Afghan Whigs.......2007-06-10
"Unbreakable: A Retrospective 1990-2006" (18 tracks; 76 min.) rightfully focuses on the band's 2 essential albums, 1993's "Gentlemen" and 1998's "1965", which are both represented by 4 tracks here. "Debonair" (from "Gentlemen") is on here of course, the closest the band ever came to mainstream success, and the band's signature song. "Be Sweet", "What Jail Is Like" and "Gentleman" are also included from the "Gentlemen" album. "1965" is represented by the single "Going To Town", "Crazy", "66" and the other single/EP "What Jail Is Like". The band's seminal Motown cover "Come See About Me" remains as fresh as ever. The controversial/difficult 1996 album "Black Love" is conveniently shoved all the way to the back of the compilation, with 3 songs on the last third of the compilation. There are also 2 new songs: the excellent "I'm A Soldier", and the pensive "Magazine", both recorded last year in a one-off reunion studio session. (Greg Dulli has made it clear that there are no further reunion plans.)
In all, this is a terrific overview of/introduction to the Afghan Whigs. It still boggles me to this day why the Whigs never broke through big-time in the 90s. They are just as good as, say, Pearl Jam, but for whatever reason it never happened. I hope this compilation will earn them renewed interest in their music. And I cannot omit the fact that the Whigs hail from Cincinnati, and are one of the best bands to hail from our city, ever... Greg Dulli has gone on to create great music with the Twilight Singers, so check them out if you are not familiar with them yet.
Last but not least, the compilation comes with great liner notes and background information on the band's history and legacy, another great job by the folks at Rhino, which issued this. In all, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Flying Without Wings.......2005-02-19
Their love songs are beautiful and touching great after you've gotten dumped or you've found that special one. I orginally bought this C.D. for the simple fact that Simon Cowell from American Idol produced this C.D.-- and if the hard to please Simon found this group good than I knew they were worth listening too.
This C.D. is their greatest hits and their is a not a bad track on this C.D. My favorite songs are "Flying Without Wings" which is better than the Ruben versiona and "Take A Look At Me Now" the duet with Mariah Carey. Buy this C.D. for your teen or pre-teen daughter and have her be amazed by U.K's "Backstreet Boys."

The Film In Audio Form.......2005-07-16
A new beginning for James Netwon Howard.......2004-10-29
You might best describe the musical score for this excellent film by saying that it is (like the film it is taken from) half real and half imagination. The main theme, Visions, feels half like a dark superhero theme and half like some of the good music for the fugitive, where the cold reality is waiting to grab you.
The themes of the villain Elijah and Audrey similarly have a strong pull. Elijah's themes feel halfway between a sad story of a person living on the dark side of life, and half the creepy machinations of a potential monster. The love themes and hero themes (which you hear at the end of Visions and The Orange Man, as well as in Carrying Audrey) to me suggest the feeling of seeing something surreal happen right in front of you (as if you saw an ordinary person save someone's life in a feat of superhuman strength before your very eyes).
I have always felt that the best movie music is composed when the person creating it has a good movie to inspire them. In this case it seems even moreso. The film is remarkably silent much of the time, so when there is music it needs to be powerful indeed. And it is. When I listened to the score for the first time, a Blindsided made my heart skip a beat, and I could swear the some of the hero themes were making me teary-eyed.
Unlike many soundtracks released in the United States today, this one appears to be complete, and free of remixes, altered tracks, and needless repitition. I could listen to this one from beginning to end without stopping and not be bored for an instant. I can't say that about many soundtracks (in fact, the only one I can think of besides this is the orginal Star Wars soundtrack). This just might be James Newton Howard's best score ever. It definitely broke new ground for him and paved the way for future great works like his score for Peter Pan. There's some strong music, some moving music, and some breath-takingly beautiful music here. It's my favorite score by James Newton Howard, and definitely a required purchase for fans of his music (or fans of classic movie scores in general).

A surprising rocker from the Scorpions.......2007-04-03
THE DISC: (2004) 13 tracks clocking in at approximately 56 minutes. Included with the disc is a 14-page heavy duty paper booklet containing song titles/credits/times, song lyrics, several black & white band photos, and thank you's. The disc is enhanced for your PC - featuring 3 short snippets you can click on for a photo gallery, video message from band members, and Scorpions biography. Recorded at Peppermint Park Studios, Hannover, Germany. Label - Sanctuary Records.
COMMENTS: If you've been following the Scorpions since the late 70's as I have, you probably passed at first on "Unbreakable" thinking it was another average (or worse) release. You'd be correct in your thinking that the Scorpions of old were long gone - with good reason... the 1990's were not kind to the band - going from bad to worse with "Face The Heat" (1993), "Pure Instinct" (1996), and the danceable "Eye II Eye" (1999). However, "Unbreakable", with its shiny metallic cover, was a pleasant surprise. A solid return to form for the Scorpions of old. I liken this Scorpions revival to that of Kiss' comeback after the dismal "Unmasked" and "Music From The Elder" and then unleashing the very heavy "Creatures Of The Night" (1982). "Unbreakable" features an ageless Klause Meine on vocals. He still sounds fresh after 30+ years (there's no hint of vocal chord damage/surgery from the early 80's). Schenker and Jabs can still rip it up on guitar. Per the the video message from the enhanced portion of the disc, this was recorded 'live' in the studio with everyone playing together. Some heavy songs here... with a fantastic opening 1-2 punch ("New Generation" and "Love 'Em Or Leave 'Em") that I haven't heard since "Blackout" (the songs "Blackout" and "Can't Live Without You"). Heavy - with melody. "New Genreration" is my absolute favorite song of theirs over the past decade. It tells an uplifting yet dark story of wartime with the leaders looking to the youth for answers... all in George Orwell-esque fashion (it really sets the tone for the entire album). Other rocking highlights include "Blood Too Hot", "Someday Is Now", "Borderline" and "Can You Feel It". The Scorpions tone it down on 3 softer songs with "Through My Eyes", "She Said", and a piano ballad "Maybe I Maybe You" (with the band joining in for a great ending)... all being well-crafted light FM songs destined for heavy use in elevators and dentist's offices. Easily, this is the Scorpions best studio album since "Savage Amusement" (1988) and "Crazy World" (1990). Many of the songs here would fit in nicely with their 80's material. This album blew me away because I was totally NOT expecting it to rock my socks off. A modern classic by some old-school rockers (4.5 stars).

Here's hoping "sony records" can do something with hopeless pete!!!.......2006-05-26
not be buying this half grade science project.I must say that i am a dead or alive fan from the past,i have most or all their albums, but really had hope for the best, thinking pete & dead or alive would come back stronger than ever but alas not so,i can only hope with dead or alives new contract with "sony" that maybe this will wake pete up and help him come back to reality.Fans of dead or alive should of expected this from dead or alive especially pete himself if you are a fan and ever read anything on dead or alive you will know pete was only in this for the money, big time.Pete, you really lost my hope for the group around the realease of the nude album & your ridiculous attempt at music & your waste of money on your obsession for being & looking like the next liza minnelli/cher rip off :(
P.s if anyone out there thinks this is a bad attempt at music then you really need to see pete & the boys from dead or alive try their hand at "videos".... evolution:the videos...no i'm sorry i have that wrong "Evolution:the total crap videos, the only video's on this dvd that actually had any production value worth watching are: you spin me round,my heart goes bang and lover come back to me..oh and maybe the new version of you spin me round...the worst has to be "unhappy birthday" and "something in my house".Now i truly understand why their videos were never in heavy rotation or actually seen the light of day on music video channels...should had saved it for the comedy channel.... :(
THINK I WANNA' DANCE NOW!.......2006-02-01
Oh dear lord...time to pack it in........2006-02-01
Fast foward over twenty years and, as my fellow reviewer commented, this is indeed a prime example of what happens when a great band lose complete control over both their material and career. I really don't want to hear any more versions of "You spin me round" as NONE will ever, ever be as good as the original (i'm talking about the 7" and both 12" - "Murder" mix from 1984 & the "Performance" mix, from 1985).
This CD really is absolutely horrendous. Really, really utterly awful...and at this price? Oh please, is this really what has become of probably the one band who's music both excited and inspired me back when I was younger? Sure, there were other bands and singers but Dead or Alive would always come first for me. Of course, bands and music tastes move on - such is the natural order of things - but I never believed it could get this bad, not for Dead or Alive. But it has. Stock Aitken Waterman have often been criticised but let's not forget it's their fantastic production that made Dead or Alive what they were, a great pop dance act with brilliant songs with a real quality to them....try listening to them now, they still sound superb.
I don't know what Pete Burns wants these days. Does he want to make more records? or is he just happy to transform himself into the worlds first living, breathing plastic Ken doll? What I do know is that i'd rather go with the 2nd option if this awful CD is an example of Dead or Alive's future. Also, it annoys me that he just doesn't seem to give a hoot about his fans or his back catalogue. It does make you wonder why we bothered in the first place...oh hang on, I know why...it's because Dead or Alive made brilliant records! I implore you then to please ignore this and go for their earlier albums instead, then you'll know exactly what I mean, just listen to the great songs...then compare them to this.
For now, as someone who has bought probably every Dead or Alive record going, this is a total waste of great talents. Time to pack it in boys and leave us with the memories.
Unimaginable.......2006-01-25
Indeed, look at the sneer on Pete's face on the insert sleeve, and take heed of his warning. Could you imagine being stuck on a rickety carnival ride for 50 non-stop minutes? This is the musical equivalent of it.
The tracks from "Fragile" are "re-imagined" here in a series of increasingly monstrous incarnations, welded together from leftover 2 Unlimited riffs that were already stale in 1996. Wickedly fast, you would break your neck dancing to these tracks, and quite possibly break your eardrums listening to them. The mastering on the "Fragile" release was murky, to say the least, but some of the moments here make it sound absolutely pristine--not that a crystal-clear transfer would make these songs sound any better (in this form). The brilliant original material on "Fragile" deserved better treatment. These tracks deserve the "erase" function.
Normally I take into consideration the fact that everybody who writes these reviews has their own unique opinion, but this is one case where I absolutely cannot understand the positive remarks that have been left here by some. How could anybody like this? Were we listening to the same album? Because the one I heard was literally unlistenable.
Caution!.......2006-01-22
Nonetheless, I suppose this cd is a must have for all those die-hard DOA fans. Heck, I've added it to my collection. The price is a little high for something I don't listen to very often, but I do like that it's an import with Japanese writing on the jewel case sleeve.

Swear it again-Their first single that launched them into the limelight and cemented their positions as singers. This track is smooth and lovable with meaningful vocals.
If I let you go-a slightly more upbeat track than swear it again.Nice vocals over a rythmic beat
Flying without wings-my personal favourite.Strong, perfect vocals over a delicious melody.Listen to the words-they're extremely sweet and irresistable.
I have a dream-A superb cover of the ABBA classic.Very christmassy and dreamy.
Fool Again-A different remix from their first album-much better. Not one of my favourites but pleasant enough.
Against all odds-a excellent duet with dive Mariah Carey.Westlife provide the smooth, harmonising vocals while Mariah provides the honey, strong vocals-a perfect combination.
My love-the first single from their second album-a definate winner.Their vocals are much stronger and defined and this track is perfect.
I lay my love on you-One of the more upbeat, slightly dancey tracks.
Uptown girl-another brilliant cover. It's upbeat, light and difficult to avoid singing along to!
Queen of my heart-first single from their third album.Extremely heartfelt and smooth.A typical,swaying-along-to track.
World of our own-Another upbeat track. The background beat is funky and the vocals are strong.
Bop Bop Baby-a slightly more upbeat track. Not one of my favourites but still good.
When your looking like that-a better remix that the original.A [great],hard-to-avoid-dancing-to track-even better live!
Unbreakable-another favourite from this album.A perfect, flawless track that may bring a tear to your eye.Perfect for sharing with someone you love.
Written in the stars-Also,one of my favourites.Smooth vocals over a silky background track-you can really hear the emotion.
How does it feel-again,its not one of my favourites but worth listening to.
Tonight-an emotion filled, gorgeous ballad that'll life your spirits and make you want to run to your loved one and wrap youself in their arms.
Love takes two-a typical westlife ballad-not a favourite but still a good listen.
Miss you nights-another cover and they cover it perfectly. Was unsure of it first, but after the second time, you'll fall in love with it.
A superb, perfect album, not one mistake or flaw-just smooth, gentle and irresistible. If you haven't got any of their previous albums then definately buy this one.It covers all the classics and creates a perfect combination of songs.Westlife are enormous and phenomonal here in the UK so watch out for them in the US-you won't be sorry you did.

(ALL SONGS ARE IN ORDER OF MY PERSONAL PREFERENCE)
GREAT SONGS:
1. Through my Eyes (No doubt the best track on the CD; A+)
2. Can You Feel It (Jabs brings back the voice-box)
3. This Time (Jabs wrote this song; sounds great to me)
4. Maybe I Maybe You (Great ballad but I didn't like the ending)
5. Deep and Dark (Underated song in my opinion)
6. New Generation (Love the beginning; awesome riff)
7. Borderline (I like the slow, funky bass riff)
8. Dreamer (Catchy Acoustical ballad)
SONGS THAT ARE DECENT:
9. My City My Town (This song grew on me after a while)
10. Someday Is Now (Decent song but it doesn't grab me)
11. Love 'Em Or Leave 'Em (This song doesn't grab me either)
12. Too Far (Acoustical ballad with terrible lyrics)
13. Blood Too Hot (A lot of guys love this song, but not me)
SONGS THAT SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN RECORDED:
14. Remember The Good Times (1960's sounding rocker; it blows)
15. She Said (One of the Scorpion's all-time worst songs)
