The soundtrack album of the popular TV show Malcolm in the Middle kicks out a few tires and windows as it replicates the boundless, smart-assed enthusiasm of youth. They Might Be Giants wrote an entire song ("Boss of Me") around the show's theme music, and it's the duo's spastic energy that sets the tone. The addition of bands with proven laugh tracks, such as Barenaked Ladies and Screamin' Cheetah Wheelies (who attack Dr. John's '70s hit "Right Place, Wrong Time" with punk-funk smarts), keeps things flowing as expected. But the surprises are what's interesting. Reeling from their David Letterman endorsed "Who Let the Dogs Out," the Baha Men provide the subtler, melodic "You All Dat" (radio mix), which won't be chanted in stadiums worldwide, but is a catchy tune nonetheless. Sneaking Hanson onto a soundtrack filled with promising acts like Travis, Eagle-Eye Cherry, and Stroke 9 might seem like a breach of protocol, but isn't being sneaky and deceitful part of the show's charm in the first place? --Rob O'Connor

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent show, excellent album.......2003-04-22

This is a good album to have especially for background music while you're working. There are no tracks on here that are destined to be remembered as classics but that doesn't mean they're not good.

Of course Boss of Me by They Might Be Giants which is the song heard at the start and end credits of each episode is on here. I just Don't Care by The Dust Brothers is a nice remix of quotes from all the family during the earlier episodes set to a nice beat. The voices of the boys are different to current episodes of course.

There's just lots of tracks which aren't anything special so weren't successful obviously on their own but are nice to have playing in the background such as Cotton Eye Joe by Rednex which brings back memories of country dancing that for some reason we were forced to do in school.

There's no big names on this album in fact I hadn't heard of most of them before I listened to this but it is worth purchasing especially if you're a fan of the funniest show on television at the moment.

5 out of 5 stars Malcolm music.......2003-03-18

This is one of my favorite CD's. MOst CD's you only like 2 or 3 songs but on this i like all but 2. Also the theme song on the show is shortened and so it's cool to hear all of the song. Most of the songs are really good and some are even really funny. The last song (I just don't care) has lines from the show put to music. The first time my friend and i heard it we couldn't stop laughing. There are a lot of really cool songs on this CD and i would redomend this to most people over 10.

4 out of 5 stars Hurrah!.......2002-08-20

I owe everything to MitM. It introduced me to They Might Be Giants! I hafta say, this CD is great for ANYONE who likes rock music and ANYONE who likes the show. The tunes really capture the essence of what Malcolm In The Middle is all about: being a kid and loving it! I'm not really keen on 'We Are Monkeys' despite previously being a pretty casual fan of Travis and I think that perhaps 'I've Seen Better Days' by Citizen King would have been a really good song to put on, plus it was used in the pilot episode.

All in all, most of the songs are brilliant (Boss Of Me, Washin' + Wonderin', Bizarro) but some do get a bit tiresome after a while. It is a great CD and I definitely would recommend it, but you certainly have to be into rock to enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! What a great CD!!!.......2002-05-23

Well, I never was a Malcom fan, but when I heard that my favorite band Hanson was on the soundtrack, I immediately went out and bought it, not caring about the other songs that may be on the CD. I put it in my CD player and, WOW! All the songs on this soundtrack are AMAZING, especially "Heaven is A Halfpipe," "Drunk Is Better Than Dead," and of course, "Smile" by Hanson! Now that I got the soundtrack, I started watching the show, and I've soon become a fan of Malcom in the Middle. You need to go out and buy this CD now!

5 out of 5 stars Great Cd!.......2002-03-13

Well the reason i bought it was for Heaven is a halfpipe, but i was listenin to all the other songs on there and they kick... too. I would reckmend it to anyone who likes... well i geuss they have mostly every kind of music on this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Great Bang for the Buck!.......2001-10-05

I love this CD and it has a wide variety of good R&B songs. I bought this trying to get a CD with some good R&B because too many artists are one hit wonders or don't produce many good songs. This album delivers and I listen to it all the time. The songs are shown above. If you want another good R&B/Rap album I recommend the 2001 Grammy R&B/Rap Nominees CD. Great R&B/Rap and good bang for the buck.

No matter whether Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Drew Carey can actually carry a tune (or the folks at Disney waved a magic wand to extract such confident, energetic performances), the soundtrack to Geppetto sparkles with theatrical grandeur and a swirly, twinkly, spring-in-your-step sound. Disney so reliably generates such energy that its insatiable audience has come to casually count on it, and Geppetto meets its mark. It's a musical retelling of the classic "Pinocchio"--as told from the point of view of the wooden one's father. Each number on the Stephen Schwartz score conveys the gist of this touching tale of pained parenthood through well-polished lyrics. In addition to the novelty of two of U.S. TV's funniest actors singing, this CD also presents an opportunity to get familiar with Sonya Isaacs (an up and comer on the country scene discovered by Vince Gill), who tenderly and convincingly delivers the last cut, "Since I Gave My Heart Away." Also not to be missed is the operatic, cleverly penned "Bravo Stromboli," powerfully sung by golden-piped, top-shelf talent Brent Spiner (also known as Star Trek: The Next Generation's Data). --Tammy La Gorce

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Sheer Brilliance!.......2005-07-10

Drew Carey is the leader of high caliber comedy. The cast of actors who are part of his show make a good thing even better. Carey is truly gifted. He can sing, dance, act and make you laugh so hard you are wiping tears of laughter out of your eyes. He does not disappoint with this collection either.

The selection of songs is wonderful and makes you feel as if you have been treated to a night on Broadway. The very moving "Since I Gave My Heart Away" is the only departure from comedy and laughter, but still wonderful in its own right.

The entire show is pure joy, a true delight. Julia Louis-Dreyfus, long established comedienne (Saturday Night Live in the early-mid 1980s and later "Seinfeld") is at her peak performance on this one. She is an extraordinary singer which, surprisingly exceeds her comedic ability, which is quite high. She belongs on Broadway!

Brent Spiner also adds fun and laughter to this ensemble. As for Drew, let's raise our glasses to Drew Carey! He can sing, dance and act and he is one of the FUNNIEST people I have ever seen! He is brilliant! Nobody could have done the role of "Toymaker" as well as Drew Carey. I think he is a kind man at heart and his gift of laughter has proved that many times.

Just get this collection. You will be glad you did. In addition to laughing so hard it hurts all over, you will enjoy the music as well. It's a win-win deal, so just go get this!

4 out of 5 stars Don't rush to judgement.......2004-07-09

I know what you're thinking: Stupid concept, a cast of "TV actors" led by Drew "no one asked you to sing and dance on your show" Carey. You probably think you're too good for this movie. And maybe you're right. The script was lame, the production was stinted and Wayne Brady was wasted as "The Magician's Son."

But...and this is the part where I wow you...none of that matters because this CD is wonderful. The songs by Stephen Schwartz ("Pippin," "Godspell") are beautiful and worthy of any Broadway hall. "Since I Gave My Heart Away" is touching and sad. "Just Because It's Magic" is charming and witty. And the opening number "Toys" is an expertly constructed tapestry of...you know, singing.

And what of the performances? Terrific. Julia "Elaine" Louis-Dreyfus proves that singing is her forte, Brent "Data" Spiner steals the show as Stromboli, Usher (who does not appear on this CD but did on TV) enchants and seduces (not that way) as the Ringleader of the Roustabouts or whatever the heck he is.

And Drew? Look, I like Drew's voice. I think he moves very well for a big guy and his voice, though not expertly trained or as strong as most, is sweet. And as the kind-hearted and simple toymaker, his voice seems oddly appropriate to convey those feelings.

In conclusion, ladles and jellyspoons, don't hurt yourself watching the movie, just buy the record. Partly because Stephen Schwartz is a brilliant songwriter but mostly because I'm looking for other members for my "Drew Carey Should Make Another Musical Club" Or the DCSMAMC as I call it...Not really.

5 out of 5 stars Truly Magical!!!!.......2002-09-03

This soundtrack is absolutely fantastic. I originally got the movie because I am a HUGE Drew Carey and Whose Line fan (I heard Wayne Brady would also be in the movie) Well, let me tell you, I never expected it to be so wonderful, but it blew me away. The songs were so wonderful, there were many upbeat songs that just got stuck in my head, like "Just because it's magic", "Pleasure Island", "And Son", & "Toys". Then there were some beutiful songs in the movie as well that truly moved me like "Empty Heart" & "Since I Gave My Heart Away"(Which I might add had me in tears the first time I saw the movie, it moved me so much). There is a little bit of everything for everyone on this soundtrack....which is why I had to have it. This CD is not like other cd's you'll buy, this is just normal actors, (and some talented pro singers, Usher and Sonya Isaacs)having fun adn sounding great! I honestly never expected Drew Carey to sound so good, but he kicks butt on this cd!!!! It truly is magical adn is a must have. I can't keep the music out of my head, I find myself humming the songs now and then.....truly worth it. :-D

4 out of 5 stars Not what I expected from a Disney/Drew Carey production.......2001-11-14

Wow. When I heard Geppetto was on ABC's Wonderful World of Disney, I decided to tune in so I could laugh at Drew Carey making a fool out of himself. However, the more I listened to the music and the lyrics, I realized there was actually something valuable here. Of course, Julia Louis-Dreyfus really does make a fool out of herself with her ridiculous accent and hideous singing (not that Carey's is good, but it's tolerable). The real strength of this show lies in the performances of its supporting players. Brent Spiner is phenomenal as Stromboli (unfortunately he only sings one number), and Rene Auberjonois does a fine job as well. The music itself ranges from passionate and moving(Empty Heart and Since I Gave My Heart Away) to upbeat and playful(Bravo, Stromboli! and satisfaction Guaranteed). I recommend this underappreciated musical to anyone looking for a show with great music without the heavier social implications of Rent(not that there's anything wrong with Rent, but I wouldn't recommend it for my five year old). The movie is also worth getting, especially to see Brent Spiner do some funny things and to see how funny Drew Carey's hair looks.

5 out of 5 stars The kids and I love it!.......2000-06-02

We are all enjoying this cd in the car. My 7-year old son is requesting track #5 "Just Because It's Magic", #7 "Bravo, Stromboli", #9 "Satisfaction Guaranteed" and #11 "Pleasure Island". My four-year old daughter LOVES "Toys". It is a nice switch from N'Sync every minute (nothing personal) and it's great to hear the kids singing the songs in the back seat!

4 out of 5 stars Some very big tunes indeed.......2000-10-06

From the ethereal Pure Shores from All Saints (precursor to all that the gorgeous foursome are doing right at the moment) to the Wamdue Project's mantra-like "King of my Castle" (and loads of places in between), this is one of those rare albums which you can just leave running on the hi-fi at your parties - few of the tracks will let you down in front of your guests. Nice for those who like to MP3 their music - each tune is self contained, as opposed to the dubbed mixes which feature strongly on other albums of this ilk. Recommended for anyone fond of strobes and thumping bass, with a little relief coming from the collaborations between Bryan Adams/Chicane and Tom Jones/Stereophonics. Must buy.

Is it ironic that the Take Me Home soundtrack to the made-for-TV movie about everyone's (except for Charlie Rich, that is) favorite Muppet-haired country singer comes out at the same time as a John Denver indie-rock tribute of the same name? Perhaps a John Denver renaissance is at hand. Don't laugh. As both albums attest, Denver was an amazingly talented singer and composer, his songs central to the Zeitgeist of an age. The auspices for the Take Me Home soundtrack are dubious (a CBS movie starring Chad Lowe as the late troubadour), but, incredibly, it stands as one of the more definitive retrospectives of the artist's career. Late in his life, no longer enjoying the heights of the charts, Denver revisited many of his early works, reinterpreting them with his matured vision and voice. These recastings are sprinkled liberally throughout the album, side by side with his original recordings, and the result is both the John Denver you loved and a John Denver you've never heard before. His rerecordings of early hits ("Leaving, on a Jet Plane," "Take Me Home, Country Roads," "Sunshine on My Shoulders") discover new emotive depths to the tunes, his voice richer in timbre and expression. Untouched originals ("Annie's Song," "This Old Guitar," "Poems, Prayers, and Promises," "Thank God I'm a Country Boy") remind us of a more optimistic day, when his songs ruled the airwaves and became ingrained in our consciousness. --Tod Nelson

5 out of 5 stars TV Story Of A Special Talent.......2006-07-04

To say that John Denver is still underrated to this day is something of an understatement. I think that people cynically toss him away as being a "flash in the pan" because he was everywhere in the 70's. It is possible that John was "over-exposed" in the 70's and that people were burnt out by the 80's. Also, people do not realize that John had friends who were also country music superstars during the 90's.
The Chad Lowe, John Denver TV movie was a disappointment to me. Obviously the script writers did not pay very close attention to his autobiography. All they had to do was read the book and copy it into the script. They had several details out of sync with his timeline, and they seemed to be in a hurry to end the movie. It could have been much better if they had given the film four hours instead of two. When I heard that Chad Lowe was playing John, all I could think of was that he needed a job and his price was right. Personally, I wish that they had left John's story to the documentary film makers.

5 out of 5 stars Breathe of fresh air.......2001-06-28

A lovely cd. Just takes your breathe away to hear John's clear sweet voice. Not a lot of extra instrumentation. Makes you feel good all over. Feeling down? Just listen to this CD and feel happy and closer to nature. It's a feel good cd. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful musical tapestry.......2000-12-14

John Denver left behind a magical musical treasure, and this CD weaves it all together to form a beautiful tapestry. From the touching opening notes of "Annie's Song" to the soaring chorus of "Flying for Me," this CD will keep your heart and senses enraptured with it's delicate, simple style. These songs are favorites of all of John's fans, but they are even more touching in light of his sudden, tragic death. Songs like "Leaving, on a Jet Plane," and "Poems, Prayers, and Promises" now bring a different kind of tear to the eye. Thank you, John, for touching our lives.

5 out of 5 stars To The Fan From Atlanta, GA..........2000-07-08

The song you are referring to is called "For Baby (For Bobbi)" The title is written like that because John originally wrote it for a girl named Bobbi. Later, he changed it to the "For Baby" because it sounded more like a lullaby. It was written in 1965 and first appeared on a Chad Mitchell Trio album titled, "That's the Way It's Gonna Be." The album was released again under the title "Violets of Dawn", also in 1965. Hoping to capitalize on John's popularity, the album was re-released in 1974 as "Beginnings...The Mitchell Trio Featuring John Denver." Liner notes show the song to have been written by "H. J. Deutschendorf, Jr." I had the pleasure of seeing John Denver in concert 3 times in the 1970's, once in the 1980's and last in the 1990's. I was looking forward to seeing him again in 2000. I guess it will just have to be on video.

This collection is a great way for anyone to listen to a sampling of John Denver's work. The movie was not that great, mostly because of the close-ups of Chad Lowe mouthing the words to John's songs. I think it would have been better to have used shots from behind him, or from a distance instead. Seeing the songs I'm so familiar with coming from a difference face made me a bit uncomfortable.

5 out of 5 stars Friends around a Campfire.......2000-05-10

Talk about under-rated, under appreciated, taken for granted...well that would be the music and especially the voice of John Denver. Evocative, romantic, innocent and clear, listening to this CD brings us back to the pure possible pleasure of country roads. By the time "Rocky Mountain High" comes up, goose bumps will come up too. Take a moment from your millenium life, and get this CD. Follow me where I go..........

5 out of 5 stars Best For A Variety.......2002-06-23

This soundtrack cantains a diverse vatriety of music. The second disc ( double disc where avaiable ) is a non stop, collection from the ALmighty record label, and contains some of the best remakes that the label is famous for and has created a name for itslf for over the last 10 years. Highly recommended for people who enjoy the best that POP music has to offer.

5 out of 5 stars Hi-Energy requiring cruise control.......2002-04-02

These discs brought back wonderful memories of hours of dancing until closing time, drenched in sweat, ears ringing, feeling top-of-the-world. The price may seem a bit steep but I think it was worth it, especially since I'm not as young as I used to be and don't have the stamina. But to listen and feel energized again! Wow! The mix/remix on the 2nd disc is well-done, most of it sounding like one long session in a dance club; the end is a bit of a let-down, not as well integrated.

Luckily the car was on cruise control (keeping the speed legal) while I drove to work. Could easily have found myself with a hefty fine.

Lust, infatuation, love, just dancing your butt off. Feel the burn again.

What better music to shake your 'thang' to then the same tired has-been 'hits' that you've heard a thousand times! Jimmy Somerville! Right on! Disco hasn't beent he same since he died! Oh, he's not dead? Whatever! Pride! Wooooh!

4 out of 5 stars SAME MEN...NEW TRACKS!.......2000-02-26

Very much like QAF 1. The first CD has 14 single tracks that include the remixes of "Haven't you heard" originally by Patrice Rushen, "Relight my fire", "Can't take my eyes off of you", "Dancing Queen", etc... The second CD is totally mixed and remixed of such hits as "I will always love you", "And I am telling you...(from DREAMGIRLS), "That don't impress me much" (Shania Twain), "Feel the Need" (Detroit Emeralds), "I don't know what I'd do" (Sweet Cream),"If I can't have you", "Angels" (Robbie Williams) and 13 more! 69 (hum?)total minutes of dance music!

4 out of 5 stars Cheesy cover, superior content.......2005-04-24

Don't be put off by the cheesy cover design. I only have a mediocre self-recorded VHS of the film and a substandard TV-set, but the musik really stood out. I have been hunting high and low for this score, to no avail, until I thought of checking Amazon UK, where it is still available. This score is a piece of music that doesn't need the film, I would gift it to people who don't know the film, just for its beauty. Knowing the film makes one appreciate the way in which the music retells the story. There is not much in terms of a CD booklet, which would have been nice (some "words from the composer", maybe).

5 out of 5 stars A Remarkable Epic Score for On The Beach.......2005-02-23

This is the official original 2000 Television soundtrack for the joint Australian/American mini-series that deals with 2 facets of humanity, the destructive nature of our technology that is open to abuse by our own hands and the other facet is the love and devotion and restraint we find ourselves as individuals and as a collective in hard and dire times.

The music was composed and directed by a very talented musician, Christopher Gordon who has created a score that matches every mood of the Tele-movie. The movie deals with a topic that we don't really ever want to go through - a nuclear war that is slowly but surely rendering humanity exinct.

The music is wonderful, and the real high impact music pieces are both touching and bring a sence of impending doom. Tracks 22 through to 26 are some of the best music I have ever had the pleasure to listen too and I could not help but shed some tears on Lacrimosa and Lux Perpetua. The female vocalist has a utterly amazing voice.

A great score remarkable and thought provoking made for one of the best mini-series ever shown on TV. On The Beach is a warning of what will happen if we ever unleash our weapons on each other.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful music for a most unpleasant topic.......2000-07-14

The soundtrack to this Australian miniseries appears to meet the two points that any good soundtrack should--it aids the film in telling its story while being able to stand alone as a piece of fine music. Christopher Gordon's soundtrack does both. It aids the viewer to feel the quiet horror of the end of the world and humanity's attempt to hang on to life until the radiation makes it unbearable. The music, itself, is outstanding--the music moves from powerful and dramatic ("The World at War") to the soft and dream-like ("On the Jetty") to Julian's last drive through Melbourne ("The Beginning of the End"). The music during the boat race can easily stand by itself. And, the main theme--also found in "On the Jetty" is as haunting a melody as you are likely to find anywhere. I look forward to hearing other works by Christopher Gordon.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous, epic main theme, beautiful orchestral score.......2000-06-05

For this little-seen miniseries remake of the anti-war classic, Christopher Gordon has composed a full, grand, old-fashioned orchestral score. It's as good as anything composed for Hollywood epics with ten times the budget, and really harkens back to the classic orchestral scores of the 50's and 60's with its sweeping themes and lush orchestrations.

The gorgeous main love theme for Rachel Ward and Armand Assante's characters is awesomely powerful in its unabashed emotions and worth buying the CD for alone. It appears in tracks 8-12, the On The Beach suite, and again, most powerfully, in track 22. It's simply stunning. The sweep and hopefulness of this unforgettable tune capture the mood of the story even better than the, at times, quite uneven film.

9/5/04 - An updated note. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY BUYING FROM EXTORTIONATE USED DEALERS. This CD may no longer be available through amazon, but its producer, Varese Sarabande, still lists it for order at their site, www.varesesarabande.com
