Editorial Reviews
Born and raised in southern California, Robert James, the son of a nationally renowned Opera soprano, started his Christian walk in the late 1970s at Harvest, Riverside under pastor Greg Laurie. RJ spent most of his childhood attending Lauries church and it was there where he was introduced to the incredible music of the late Keith Green. Sometime in the summer of 1978, Keith had played a concert at Harvest where RJs father had purchased a vinyl record of "For Him Who Has Ears To Hear". And like so many before him, RJ was hooked to the melodies, conviction, and lyrics of Green. RJ was only 7 years old. "Keiths music & lyrics challenged me through many emotions, even at a very young age. And as a mature Christian adult I really began to adopt his message into my own songwriting. I get a 'spiritual shot in the arm' every single time I hear his music even 20 years after his death." Although Keith's music has had an amazing impact throughout RJ's life, it was 16 years of organized baseball that demanded his focus. Fortunately, he walked away from the game in 1996 when a short stint with a minor league affiliate failed. However, it was after the tragic death of his older brother, Johnny, in September 1992 when RJ seriously sat down at the piano for the first time. Here he found a way to channel his pain & emotions by speaking to God through music. "My brother, still makes all of us cry... but while seeking God in this tragedy, there was a renewal of my spirit through my suffering." Johnny died instantly from a severe brain aneurysm. He was only 22.
RJ wrote his first couple of songs in '93 and uncovered a passion for songwriting and singing that had remained dormant for so many years. He continued to write and sing, and began to share his music and ministry with others.
Consumed by the love and understanding of Jesus Christ, RJ's songwriting ability matured as his heart weighed heavily to challenge others and himself to follow Christ's example. "I want to challenge the believer and encourage those that might not yet believe", he explains. His compilation of original songs encompass a wide range of themes and that give hope and encouragement, uplift the spirit, and deeply challenge one's individual walk with Christ Jesus. "I believe I had to experience many triumphs and many tragedies to know what to write, and what I think people need to hear. My prayer is that everyone will see what I know, and that we will follow Christs example of Love". RJ continues to write new songs and plans to tour California, Washington, Arizona, and Nevada to share his ministry starting in late 2002. From the National Anthem in Major League Ballparks, to coffeehouses and other churches, RJ takes with him the message of Hope and Love, Forgiveness and Non-Judgment. For almost 3 years, RJ has been the resident artist at Creekside Community Church in Alamo, California where he helps in leading worship, high school, and small groups. More to come !

If the fans who grooved to Believe still clamor for more, there's little doubt that Living Proof will quickly achieve the same chromatic status as Cher's new hair color. The multitalented entertainer is placing a safe bet on the fortitude of her latest incarnation as disco diva to support a second album of dance club tracks. Other pop femme fatales of late are experimenting with subtleties in rhythm and nuance, but subtlety is not one of Cher's selling points. She's been quoted as comparing "Song for the Lonely" to U2's sound; indeed, through Cher's discofied ears, there are brief moments where the track riffs on U2's euphoric "Beautiful Day" and the two songs share a hopeful sentiment. "Love So High" and "Body to Body, Heart to Heart" throw the prerequisite Latin guitar and percussion into the mix, and the buzzing back beats on her cover of "Love One Another" (last heard on Dutch singer Amber's self-titled release) make it one of the CD's tightest songs. Cher's vocals--a taste we've had more than 35 years to acquire--are strong, and her production team enhances her limited range with studio tricks. Living Proof will appeal more to Cher's devoted fans than electronica purists, but her missive is relished by both sects: leave your worries at the door and get out on the dance floor. --Beth MassaAlbum Description
Her first album since 1998's quadruple-platinum Believe and its platinum #1 title track, the pop, dance-friendly 'Living Proof' features the Diane Warren-penned 'When You Walk Away' - unavailable on the European version (replaces 'You Take It All'). Produced by the likes of Chicane, Rick Nowells and Norwegian production team Stargate, 'Living Proof' impressively captures Cher at her seductive dancefloor best. Cher IS living proof that nothing can keep this woman down!.......2007-07-21
Right before this album came out, 9/11 happened. Cher dedicates the tribute song "A Song For the Lonely" to the "Courageous People of New York" who endured through the horrible event. When I last saw her in concert (Farewell Tour, 2005, Glendale AZ) and this video was shown in the ampitheater, I was struck by the WTC symbolism and how moving the song was. This CD has a link to the video and it is definitely worth watching.
I think "Believe" was a much-more commercially viable disc than "Living Proof," though I think that "Living Proof" is a more powerful recording. It also took me a few listenings for me to really start to like it. It's packed with great songs. I always thought that Diane Warren's "Body to Body, Heart to Heart" should have been released as a single.
The record company antics of releasing different versions of the disc in the U.S. and Europe are a bit tiresome: the European versions contained additional songs and short-changed U.S. fans. The same company did the same thing with the "It's A Man's World" disc in the mid-90s. It's all about the bucks, I know, but enough is enough.
Love it!!.......2007-04-22
Song for the lonely (8/10) not my favorite song, but still good
Different kind of love song (10/10) Really fun to dance to.
Alive agian (15/10)One of my favorite songs!
The music's no good without you (14/10) one of her better dance songs
Rain Rain (10/10) It has a great beat to it and I love it.
Real love (10/10) upbeat and great to sing along to!
Love so high (9/10) not the best, but it is a good song.
Body to body, heart to heart (5/10) its an ok song, but not my favorite.
Love is a lonely place without you (15/10)Kind of dark, but its awesome!
...Song For The Lonely..........2007-02-16
a formula that works for cher.......2006-09-30
the song "believe" really got me hooked on "disco" Cher.
let's hope she keeps this style (as found on believe and living proof) from here on out. it really works for her!
hightlights:
"song for the lonely"
"different kind of love song" (my favorite!)
"alive again"
"the music's no good without you"
"love is a lonely place without you"
and "when the money's gone" (this one is a bit overdone though)
songs that could have been left out:
"rain, rain" and "body to body, heart to heart"
PURE FILLER! these two songs are a poor attempt at r&b/pop.
stick with the dance cuts!
Better than "Believe" - and Cher reveals herself to be a fine singer. .......2006-06-05
Living Proof is a hard driving club dance album, and as such it is top notch. The first four songs of Living Proof are really terrific Dance floor break outs, and include her two big hits Song for the Lonely" and "Different Kind of Love Song."
"Rain Rain" really shows off Cher's singing ability, and gives us a breather from all the electronic enhancement. (nothing wrong with that though - this is a club dance album after all).
The next three songs are a bit less intereseting, but 9-12 again give us some really good stuff. I especially like "Love is a Lonely Place Without You."
Also Living Proof is engineered and mixed to the hilt - the wah-wah guitar effect was great in the song Believe, and the current "The Music's No Good Without You.' but otherwise becomes a bit too intrusive and overdone. A few more purely acoustic numbers would have been nice.
Overall, Living Proof is very similar to Believe, but is more substantial I think, with stronger more complex arrangements and surely the finest singing Cher has ever done.

Sylvester & Friends: LIVE in San Francisco .......2006-11-23
LIVING PROOF consists of 10 tracks, including the "Overture", an instrumental introduction medly. The track listing (back panel) is almost identical in style and format to that of "The Original Hits" collection. Booklet includes personnel, thanks, no lyrics, and no photos or artwork. This is the 1990 re-issue of the original 1979 LP. The album was originally released as a double-LP; the fourth side of which were studio recordings, including "Can't Stop Dancing"; those tracks are not included here, hence the disclaimer "Due to maximum playing time limitations, it has not been possible to include the entire contents of the original double album on this CD."
Two Tons O' Fun (Izora Rhodes and Martha Wash, who later became The Weather Girls, billed here as "The Two Tons") performed on stage with Sylvester and make their presence known much too much to allow them to be called "background" vocalists. (Jeanie Tracy and Sharon Hymes, singing in the orchestra pit, were the backup singers that nite.)
Disco Diva Sylvester only makes a minor appearance in this set. The bulk of the performance is by Sylvester the neo-gospel secular singer, Sylvester the balladeer, and Sylvester as his Jazz chanteuse alter-ego "Ruby Blue" (or Rubi Bleu). One disappointing aspect of Sylvester's (or Rubi's) performance is that "Lover Man (Oh Where Can You Be)" omits the word "man", thus becoming gender-less. (However, he does dedicate the song "Sharing Something Perfect Between Ourselves" to his "lover".)
Track 4, the Medley of "Could It Be Magic" and "A Song for You" is a duet with pianist Eric Robinson. It is mostly a rendition of "A Song for You" with "Could It Be Magic" used as an intro and an outro.
The performance and the disc end with Sylvester's most mainstream hit "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)". It starts off as the disco hit most know it as, but it soon transitions into a ballad version of the song, with Sylvester soliciting audience participation.
There are no monologs, but there is a bit of banter by Sylvester, which does mean there is less music and time spent singing, but the dialog and audience interaction is something unavailable on a studio album. (It would be nice if an extended version of the album could be released - if the master tapes are even available; if not, a re-issue with the omitted studio recordings and some other extras would be great.)
The only other live albums in my collection are by Millie Jackson and Erykah Badu (not counting that horribly edited Etta James ten-song set that has been released under several titles). I find them both - especially Millie Jackson's "Live & Uncensored" [1979] - much more enjoyable than "Living Proof". But I did find "Living Proof" enjoyable. However, I would only recommend it to true Sylvester fans who already have his other recordings in their collections.
Sylvester's Shining Moment Captured For All Posterity!!.......2006-01-10
Laughter & Joy (reminiscing about the good ol' days!)
Sadness & Melancholy (thinking of how we lost this
talented artist and larger-than-life personality,
as well as many of my great freinds from that era
to the scourge of AIDS!)
There aren't a lot of us around still who can
remember when Sylvester's star was shining bright
but thank goodness this special night was captured
on record for us to hear & stroll down memory lane,
and for a new generation to discover
one of the true grand divas of disco!
They're all on here "Dance (Disco Heat)",
"You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)", "You Are My Freind",
which was his popular rendition of a Patti Labelle song.
(One of his idols and later a freind!)
He also covers another disco diva's songs..
Donna Summers' beautiful and haunting "Could This Be Magic",
which was penned by Barry Manilow.
He and "Two Tons O' Fun" (Martha & Izora) also do a snappy
churchified version of Lennon & McCartney's classic "Blackbird".
You can feel the energy and love between the artists and
the audience on that fabled night in March 1979!
Too bad his other disco classic "Do Ya' Wanna Funk?"
wasn't even recorded at the time this concert record was made.
That would've taken it over the edge!
R.I.P. Sylvester, Patrick Cowley & Ms. Izora "Queen Mother" Rhodes!!
P.S.>>Check out the biographical book on Sylvester's life
called "The Fabulous Sylvester"..it captures his life and times
as well as the social climate of San Francisco in the 70's
to a tee! I really enjoyed reading this book and you will too!
One of the Finest Live Albums of The 70's.......2005-09-23
His hits are here, and You Make Me Feel Mighty Real, and Dance (Disco Heat) are Dance Classics for a reason. Another Disco song is his cover of the Pointer Sister's hit from 1979, Happiness.
However most of the covers he chose to sing allowed him to show off his versatility. From the Beatle's Blackbrid, to Patti LaBelle's You Are My Friend, to a spine tingling medley of Could It Be Magic and A Song For You, Sylvester's shows off the fusion of R & B, Gospel, and Pop that few others could master.
The classic Lover Man (Oh where can you be) is also given the Sylvester touch.
Now that CD's can hold more tunes per disk, it would be great if the full album would be reissued on CD, as the vinyl copy includes more live tracks, including Cry Me A River, and another great Sylvester Dance Track, In My Fantasy (a studio recording).
Also worth noting is the ballad that he dedicated to his then lover (in the audience), Sharing Someting Perfect Between Ourselves. Long before artists started to finally come out of the closet in the late 80's and 90's (Melissa Etheridge, Frankie Holly, Boy George, George Michael) there were a group of brave artists who came out during the Disco Craze, Sylvester amoung them (other include DC LaRue, Paul Parker, The Skatt Brothers). THEY were the true trailblazers.
and finally, this release has the added treat of the Two Tons on backing vocals, long before they were The Weather Girls, they were holding down the vocals with Sylvester, and they had their own hits as well
(see my review of The Weather Girls, Super Hits).
Brillaint LIVE album..........2005-06-20
I was IN ATTENDANCE at this show !!!!!!!!!.......2005-04-06
March 11th 1979. My friend Gary and I went. The place was packed with Sylvester's fans and people! There was a heavy fog
of pot smoke filling the entire auditorium and you would get
a whiff of poppers every few minutes.
The crowd was ON FIRE!! everyone standing and moving/dancing
in their seat. The addition of TWO TONS OF FUN (later to become THE WEATHER GIRLS) was wonderful! They backed-up Sylvester many times before. They launched into "You Make Me Feel Mighty Real"
and "DISCO HEAT" and the energy intensified throughout the show.
The incredible voices of Martha Wash and Izora Rhodes are highlighted in the song "You Are MY Friend" with a solo of
Martha's sweet and soulful style followed by Izora's DOWN DEEP,
HEAVY DUTY, INDUSTRIAL STRENGTH, GUT WRENCHING, Soooouuuul!
(Martha has cut a new album and finally got credit for her vocals on "Gonna Make You Sweat" with C+C Music Factory and
"Takin' Over" with C+C Music Factory.) (Izorha Rhodes passed over several years ago in Germany where she lived with her
daughter)
.....Anyway Great Show ! The CD version of what was original
on vinyl as a 2 record set still catches the energy and joy
of one of my favorite shows ever!!!!

HANK WILLIAMS JR LIVING PROOF BOX SET.......2006-08-18
The early years were typical Nashville country.......2004-07-29
The top twenty country hits featured here are Long gone lonesome blues (a cover of one of his father's songs), Standing in the shadows (about his father), It's all over but the crying, Cajun baby, A baby again, I'd rather be gone (written by Merle Haggard), I walked out on heaven,, Ain't that a shame (a Fats Domino cover), Raining in my heart, I've got a right to cry, Rainy night in Georgia, All for the love of sunshine (his first country number one), Eleven roses (his second country number one), After all they used to belong to me, Pride's not hard to swallow, The last love song, Hank (about his father), I'll think of something, Angels are hard to find and Stoned at the jukebox.
Hank was originally marketed as another Hank Williams (which he was born to be) and he has never been able to completely get away from his father's legacy as his later music shows. However, the connection is even more obvious on these early recordings, confirmed by the covers of his father's songs here. Your cheating heart is a piano solo that lasts thirty seconds. There are plenty of others, some famous, some obscure.
The outstanding cover is Satin sheets, a song made famous by Jeanne Pruett and covered by many top female country singers including Dolly, Tammy and Loretta. Hank does it as an answer song, protesting that he is busy working and can't give a woman his undivided attention. He sings with real passion, perhaps because he was having his own marital problems at the time.
There are plenty of other covers, including songs originally made famous by Jimmie Rodgers (Mule skinner blues), Merle Haggard (I threw away the rose), Johnny Cash (Understand your man), Jody Reynolds (Endless sleep), George Jones (Least of all you), Bobby Darin (Splish splash), Patti Page (Tennessee waltz), Lefty Frizzell (I love you a thousand ways), Webb Pierce (Slowly), Cowboy Copas (Alabam), Bob Dylan (I'll be your baby tonight) and the Temptations (My girl). Other covers include Slow rider (also known as I ride an old paint) and Nobody's child (originally recorded by Hank Snow but a top ten UK pop hit for Karen Young).
As well as all the covers, Hank showed that he had inherited his father's skills as a songwriter. Perhaps none of his own songs here quite measure up to his father's classics or his own songs from the late seventies and the eighties, but there are some good ones here. Highlights include I was with Red Foley the night he passed away, No one's sorrier than me and Getting over you as well as several of his big hits of the period.
By the end of his time with MGM, his music had already started to change in the direction that Hank wanted, particularly evident on the last nine tracks here taken from his final MGM album, And friends.
There is much to enjoy here if you like mainstream country of the sixties and seventies.
Hope they re-release this!!.......2003-03-07

Even Better Than The Real Thing!.......2003-01-15
But if you like BELIEVE, then you will most certainly be falling in love with LIVING PROOF.
She is sticking to the dance formula, but this time around she's not just having Metro on board supervising the album (although they appear to b the exec producers).
You can hear their influences in two very dissimilar tracks: both the European leading single THE MUSIC'S NO GOOD WITHOUT YOU (plain dancefloor-oriented) and the American one A SONG FOR THE LONELY (more electric guitars, reminds me a bit of a remixed U2 song).
Their best effort comes through in LOVE IS A LONELY PLACE WITHOUT YOU...it's very emotional, very deep meaning - it was the song playing in my head as Sakis and I said goodbye for the last time in December 2001.
But then she also has some great fun with Chicane (ALIVE AGAIN)and Tony Moran (BODY TO BODY, written by Diane Warren, but probably the weakest track off the whole album...).
A LOVE SO HIGH and WHEN THE MONEY'S GONE are written and produced by Bruce Roberts, and bring back some good old pop.
Stargate-produced/written A DIFFERENT KIND OF LOVE SONG is made for the discos of the world...
And the Japanese version i own has an extra track called THE LOOK: it is not the cover of Roxette's hit, but a brand new composition by Metro, that borders a lot towards Latino influenced tracks (got the feeling this must have been written with Ricky Martin or Enrique Iglesias in mind as performers, and then later changed to Cher).
The lady will be knocking you off your feet once again...i am so excited to see what she will come up with next!
The Look adds a Dov'e L'amore Reminiscant to a Great Album.......2002-11-28

Life in the old Ash yet - to the tune of 2 or 3 stars.......2006-06-29
Ash fans should loo at the track listing before buying. After all it depends on what era of Ash floats your boat. And it is only one disc when their gig must of gone much longer. With only eleven tracks the value isn't high and your not getting any insight into this mob and so the casual fan can probably miss this one without feeling terribly deprived. Then again it could be a decent intro to this gentle rock 'n' roll institute.
Two or three stars depending on your mood.

Includes the Track 'you Take it All', which is Not Included on the USA Version.Customer Reviews:
cherist album on earth!.......2005-08-31
Cher's best album .......2005-06-25
First of all, there are more tracks. Plus, these are all new tracks. Believe only gave us 9 new tracks, and a remix of We All Sleep Alone. This, however, gives us 12 new numbers, which are all brilliant. Most of the album is a dance album, so be sure to shake your butt off! I fell in love with The Music's No Good Without You the first time I heard it, and already had so many Cher albums, had seen her in concert (Do You Believe Tour) and was a MASSIVE Cher fan so I had to have this album. Tracklisting:
1. The Music's No Good Without You (4:43)
2. Alive Again (4:19)
3. (This Is) A Song For The Lonely (4:01)
4. A Different Kind Of Love Song (3:52)
5. Rain Rain (3:42)
6. Love So High (4:33)
7. Body To Body, Heart To Heart (3:58)
8. Love Is A Lonely Place Without You (3:54)
9. Real Love (3:55)
10. Love One Another (3:44)
11. You Take It All (4:53)
12. When The Money's Gone (4:39)
This is definately one of the best albums I own. You must pick it up now. It's definately such a darn catchy album! Everyone should own it. You are bound to love it! My favourite songs are (This Is) A Song For The Lonely, A Different Kind Of Love Song, Real Love and When The Money's Gone. To buy!

Cher's Euro version is no different sounding from the somewhat recent American release with the exception of a mixed arrangement of the songs (the order, not the actual songs) and the haunting synth beats of "You Take It All" (perhaps Cher talking about death?) being placed on here instead of "When You Walk Away". It s a good move and so is this euro order of the songs. "The Music's..." a tripply funny techno track with many vocoder effects. Unfortunately, the vocoder takes over on many a track and weakens it, like in the case of disco funky "This is A Different Kind of Love Song" and the clubby breakup song "Love Is A Lonely Place Without You". The only time that the vocoder adds to a strong song is "Real Love", a club giddy singsong about finding...real love. The funky grooves layered on top of the fun phrasing makes it maybe the strongest track. "Song For The Lonely" is a top notch vocal performance along with "Love So High", both dancey fun tour de forces. The songs are all quite good, although "When The Money's Gone" is almost too silly for its own good. After all, the album is much more love focused, with Cher talking relationships and reaching her hands out there those that need love. Take "Love One Another" which a song about getting along with those you don't understand that is also a cover by another dance diva named Amber. "Living Proof" is about love and Cher has a lot to give. While the album is not her strongest ever, it is a nice follow-up to "Believe". It is not as widely spastic as "Believe", which is a blessing and a curse. It follows the same Metro formula, with only a little latin influence in tracks like "Body..." and "Love So High" and slower paced R&B-like "Rain, Rain". I suggest you "Believe" before you get any "Living Proof". While all versions of the disc are good (I heard a rough version of "The Look" and it's hot), I think the best is this European version.
