GREAT, great singer/ songs!!!.......2007-04-24

This is one great cd performed by one great singer! They are fun to sing, dance, and just relax with. Hoku is one of those singers that can be very soft, like in "You First Believed," or very upbeat like "Another Dumb Blonde." Every song in here is clean (no curses), and once you know the words, its impossible not to sing along. I recommend this cd for people of all ages. GO HOKU!!!!

P.S. Just to inform everyone who is wondering...YES, HOKU IS COMING OUT WITH A NEW CD THIS YEAR! She is working very hard on it and the songs are definitely going to be worth the wait! Trust me.

WONDERFUL, TALENTED GEOURGEOUS GIRL!!!.......2006-11-30

Her album demonstrates that young female singers DO have potential.

1. "Another Dumb Blonde" 5 Stars. This song is what started Hoku's career, it has an excellent beat to it and wonderful lyrics. Something that'll get inside your head!

2. "What You Need" A MILLION STARS! This is the best song on the album, everything about it is just wonderful! Words can't express how much I love it.

3. "How Do I Feel (The Burrito Song)" 4 Stars. Another great message song, her music video of this song rocks!

4. "Just Enough" 4 Stars. Love this song too, get's inside your head and makes you want to sing it over and over. It had a great touching message to it.

5. "Oxygen" 5 Stars. My 2nd favorite on the album, the chorus is so catchy and creative, makes you want to listen to it over and over. My sister loves this song aswell.

6. "Nothing in This World" 3 Stars. I honestly don't care too much for this song. It's okay the first time, but it's definetely not one that I would replay over and over as I do with the others.

7. "In The First Place" 4 Stars. It's really not bad. It has a cool tune to it, the message is impact aswell.

8. "Every Time I Speak" 5 Stars. LOVE THIS SONG TOO! My 3rd favorite, the chorus is the most cachiest chorus of them all, and the beat of it rocks!

9. "I'm Scared" 1 Star. By far the worst song on the album. Never bothered listenting to it again after I heard it the first time. I just wasn't impressed by it.

10. "We Will Follow the Sun" 4 Stars. Love this one too. I think this song is one of the best well-written ones on the album. Hoku's great voice is demonstrated in this song right here.

11. "You First Believed" 4 Stars. Excellent song and message. Hoku is so talented for writing this song by herself. She has a lot of potential, and she could do wonders with her singing career!

Overall, I'd say the CD is 8.5-9/10. It's a great CD to listen to when your in the mood for music! I say buy it! =)

A guilty pleasure of the rarest form........2006-06-29

Poor Hoku, it's sad to see she hasn't released an album since 2000. The daughter of Hawaiian performer Don Ho, Hoku's debut album was defintely a guilty pleasure of radio-friendly pop songs. Although my musical taste have changed quite a bit since then, this album does have great tracks and those include: Oxygen, Just Enough, Nothing in this World, In the First Place, and Another Dumb Blonde. Not a perfect, deep album but pure saturated fun is what to expect from this "dumb blonde."

Now I Know Why I Liked her All That Time Ago..........2006-06-14

I knew Hoku when she first came out, and remembered liking her so very much that I got her c.d. and enjoyed it. But I forgot about her for awhile. Yet I passed by her c.d. again a month ago at a music store and for fun listened to it again, and realized how much I missed her songs. Yes, she is another pop girl, but unlike many pop girls, she is not shallow nor plastic. She actually has a genuine feel to her, sounding like a teen tearing out pages of her heartfelt diary and singing them to us.

I like the way she puts together her songs, her lyrics are likeable and you can relate to them, and it is obvious that she has a pretty voice. It all comes together to make a very enjoyable pop album.

High moments on the album though are definitely songs like Just Enough and I'm Scared, for they show the more serious side of her.

Then she has fun on the album as well with songs like The Buritto Song and Oxygen.

Another Dumb Blonde, What You Need, Nothing, and First Place are some of the stronger songs too. Overall her album is very fun, airy pop that you will keep putting back in your computer to listen to over and over. She's just that addictive- and I hope her newest album coming out soon will be just as enjoyable.

Where is she?.......2006-04-26

My family loves Hoku. I have two daughters, 18 and 16, and a 13 yr old son. We were first exposed to Hoku a few years ago on the Disney Channel. After receiving her cd, it soon became the soundtrack of our summer. We live in Southern Calif and many trips to the beach were spent driving down the freeway to Newport Beach (a 45 min drive) singing along to Hoku (and M2M). My kids are all musicians, singers, write songs, have bands and love this cd. We saw a brief biography of her once, maybe on the Disney Channel, and she was filmed singing on her church worship team. Did she have a conflict with her faith and the biz? Where did she go?

Whether it's ukulele music, the island exotica of Martin Denny, the lounge crooning of Don Ho, or the slack key acoustic guitar tradition, many styles of music have emerged from the jeweled necklace in the Pacific known as Hawaii. Over the course of five albums, popular singer Keali'i Reichel (pronounced kay-ah-LEE-ee rye-SHELL) touches on both commercial adult contemporary songcraft and traditional ukulele and hula dance accompaniment--he was a noted hula dance instructor and cultural historian before becoming a professional musician. The Grammy-nominated Ke' Alaokamaile is the singer's tribute to his family, singing about his ancestors and his own life so far. While there a gloss on many of these contemporary songs (even when sung Hawaiian) that no doubt gives them a broad pop appeal--Reichel also does a sentimental but somewhat empty version of Sting's "Fields Of Gold"--the traditional songs are strong enough to prove Reichel's versatility. Purists will likely have problems with some of Ke'alaokamaile, but Reichel's legions of fans will swallow it whole. --Tad Hendrickson

What can I say?.......2005-08-30

Everyone else who reviewed this album has basically said it all. I have all five of Keali'i's CD's and can hardly wait for a sixth to come. You don't have to know the Hawaiian language to enjoy his music; even I only know a few phrases. His voice is beautiful and very soothing, especially if you're stressed, unhappy, or you can't get to sleep. My two favorite songs on this CD are "Ka Nohona Pili Kai" and "Mele 'Ohana," which is sung in both Hawaiian and English. I also love his rendition of Sting's "Fields of Gold." Keali'i is a great chanter as well. This is shown in "He Lei No Kamaile" and "Lei Hana I Ka Makani Ualau Awa." A recommended CD for all!

Felt Like Puppy Love.......2005-05-04

I'm so sorry to say but I really did NOT like this CD. The tunes were pretty similar and felt like puppy love songs. There were very few of the Hawaiian style songs that I like and look forward to from Keali'i Reichel but not enough to make me like the whole CD. I am donating mine to the library...

The Best Album I've Ever Heard.......2005-04-15

I own and enjoy all of Keali`i Reichel's albums but Ke`alaokamaile is the best. Everything about it is wonderful; from the booklet that comes with it to the final song. I always enjoy his chants and this CD has two excelent ones. My favorite song on this album is "Ka Nohana Pili Kai". All his songs are simply beautiful.

My family and I plan to fly from Arkansas to attend his September 11, 2005 concert at the Hollywood Bowl. I would only do that for an exceptional artist. I'm looking forward to his next album. This one will be hard to top.

A precious and wonderful album!.......2004-06-17

Mahalo e Keali`i for sharing your aloha with us. This album is a wonderful tribute to his tutu, and his family, as well as everyone's family. The music is pure, in true Keali`i fashion that his fans love. I had tears in my eyes the first time I listened to "Ka Nohona Pili Kai". The entire album is filled with great music, in English and Hawaiian.

Wow. Another fine album from this fine artist. His voice caresses the Hawaiian language, already one of the most beautiful languages on earth. His Hawaiian sounds like the Hawaiian that the kupuna speak. Combine that with the masterful poetry of the amazing Puakea Nogelmeier, and you've got music that is timeless. Whenever I listen to Keali`i singing, it makes me soooo homesick for Hawai`i. If that weren't enough, Keali`i is one of the nicest people you'll ever meet -- and so is Puakea. They both still live in Hawai`i and they don't have the big head because they are famous. Buy this album, buy all of his albums. You won't be disappointed.

Hoku Award-winners sung Cazimero-style........2004-10-25

The Cazimero Brothers, with a career spanning thirty years and three dozen Hawaiian albums, turn their talents here to the Hoku Award-winners of the past twenty years. Given for the best Hawaiian pop song of the year, the Hoku Award celebrates new music and, often, new talent, though some of these songs have, by now, become so well known that they now belong to the Hawaiian Songbook--almost as popular as the traditional Hawaiian songs.

Representing a tremendous variety of styles, this CD ranges from the soft, slow, romantic ballad, "Come to Me Gently," from 1982; to the dramatic and pulse-racing "Cane Fire," of 1983; the slack key blues protest song, "Brown Man Blues," from 1993; and "Uwehe 'Ami and Slide," a rock and roll-style hula song. As always the Cazimeros record their songs in multiple tracks, creating dense and unusual harmonies, as their voices range from high falsetto to deep baritone. The accompaniments include fine slack key guitar, drums, percussion, and on "Morning Dew," a lovely piano (or keyboard).

The Cazimeros give unique twists to these familiar songs, including more changes of keys, harmony, and rhythm and more chromatics than are heard on the original albums, to the point that in some cases it's even a bit difficult to recognize the original song. Totally professional and possessed of consummate musical sense and creativity, the Casimeros give fresh interpretations to songs created and originally sung by other performers. If you like close harmony, smoothing music,or Hawaiian music then you will like this CD. Out of all the Cazimero Brothers CD, I listen to this the most. A must have.

Terrific.......2001-05-22

I'm not sure why 20 years of Hoku Award-winning songs includes only 17 tracks and not all 20 winners, but what's here is great. The annual Hoku Awards, the Hawaiian equivalent of the Grammys, reward excellence in Hawaiian music. The Brothers have been around a long time and know their way around a good song. Together this is an excellent review of contemporary Hawaiian popular song and leisurely, melodic listening. Enjoy it and support America's overlooked native music, too.
