Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars GREAT for kids and parents, too!.......2007-04-13

I rarely write reviews, but just had to write about this amazing CD. It's not your typical kiddie-fare. My three kids (ages 4, 6, and 8) listen to this one over and over again, and my husband and I are hooked, too. We are not into jazz at all, but the songs here are so catchy and fun. It's cool enough that you could even play it at an adult function, and everyone would like it. In fact, I'm buying it for my mom, who is 64, because I know that she'll be singing it around the house in no time at all -- just like we do!

4 out of 5 stars cute for kids.......2006-08-13

I bought "Nicky's Jazz Lullabies" before my baby was born and loved it, so I decided to purchase this CD. My baby is a little young for it yet, but it fun to listen to while we play. The songs are cute and catchy, and I'm sure she'll love it eventually. I'm a jazz lover and hope to introduce her to some of the greats. Plus, in my opinion, this beats those cheesy kids songs any day.

5 out of 5 stars Everybody listens when they come to my house.......2006-07-25

This is a delightful program of songs that will please everyone with a garden of word-tune delights. My family and I loved it. We've played it over and over again for our friends. I bought it for several other children I know. They loved it. One 4-year-old is determined to learn every song. And that means learning lots of words, rhymes, syncopation, from great artists of American jazz culture. A verbal infusion for the young that is great fun.

5 out of 5 stars A gem!.......2006-01-23

I rarely write reviews, but I need to comment on how fantastic this compilation is. I have a four-year-old and an eighteen-month-old, and this CD is in heavy rotation at our house. My husband and I love the music at least as much as they do -- it's stylish and sets a great mood as we're making dinner and doing dishes. The kids love it too, needless to say. My four-year-old's favorites are Three Blind Mice (she loves when the farmer's wife squeaks that she'll give back the tails) and the final track by Peggy Lee (where she says the word *poop*, as in "party poop" -- endless laughter ensues). Ella Fitzgerald's A-Tisket, A-Tasket and Chew, Chew Your Bubblegum are priceless. All in all, I highly recommend this CD -- everyone will be happy to hear it again and again.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most under rated cd's on the market.......2005-05-03

This cd has won awards and delighted anyone who has listened. Why it isn't a requirement for kids learning about music, especially in the US where Jazz became Jazz, is beyond me. Perfectly charming songs from the best of the best who made Jazz, lots of passionate Jazz.

Album Description

Long before the raw power of punk icon Iggy Pop became legend, his first incarnation as Iggy Stooge of proto-punk trailblazers The Stooges roared into being. The essence of punk years before the genre existed, The Stooges' furious music was a howling, visceral, fuzztone-drenched, and unprecedented vortex of sound, as evidenced on their revolutionary self-titled, John Cale-produced 1969 debut album. Their bracing follow-up, Fun House portrayed their evolution into a fiercer, stronger band with Iggy's primal vocals and mad brilliance more potent than ever. Each immortal album is now remastered and twice as amazing with a second disc of rarities and previously unreleased tracks.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best Stooges Album.......2007-07-25

I recieved this, along with "The Stooges," for my birthday very recently. I had had Raw Power for a while, and had enjoyed that. The first album I also like and recommend it. But this is certianly the best. Very rarely do I really like an album on the first listen, and I knew immediatly that this one was going to be amazing as soon as I heard the opening guitar part to "Down on the Street." Every track is great. My two favorites are the opening track and "TV Eye" and I love the saxophone (being a sax player myself) on side two. And it all ends chaoticly with "LA Blues" which appealed to the side of me that likes experimental, psychedelic, fusion noise like Pink Floyd, King Crimson, and the Beatles "Revolution 9." If you liked the debut album, you MUST own this.

5 out of 5 stars Hot animalistic rock and roll at its best..........2007-05-28

This has to be one of the hardest hitting albums ever released. The fact that it came out in 1970 is amazing, only confirming that the Stooges were ahead of their time. (This album pre-dated the punk movement of '77 by seven years.) Also confirming that "Fun House" was a work of genius is the fact that Elektra records dumped the Stooges from their roster after they released this album, which proves the theory that genius is rarely understood, accepted, or recognized in it's time and is only appreciated in hindsight. This album wipes the floor with what is considered "heavy" today, you put it up next to a band like Nickelback or another band in that genre and it makes the other band look emotionless and weak by comparison. The first three songs on this disc don't let up a bit, "Down On The Street", "Loose", and "T.V. Eye" are all relentless grooves that capture the Stooges throbbing rhythm section, buzzsaw guitar, and Iggy's over the top vocals and gutteral screams and yelps. (I once read Iggy's explanation of what the "T.V." stands for in "T.V. Eye", and it doesn't stand for television, and thats all I can say on Amazon.) "Dirt" stands as one of the Stooges best slow songs, and doesn't lag for a seven minute dirge. The onslaught continues with "1970" which was later to be covered by many punk bands years later, most notably The Damned, who released it as "I Feel Alright" on their debut album. "Fun House" has one of my favorite Iggy vocals and a struttin' vamp of an arrangement by the band, including a honking sax. I can remember blasting it in college and having people walk by my door and asking, "What the hell's that noise?". "L.A. Blues" is like a free jazz blow out where the band implodes on itself. Unbelievable. This album sounds as fresh today as it probably did back then, and will remain timeless. It is amazing to me that the Stooges combined a punk attitude and aggressive music this way in the late sixties and early seventies, when hippies ruled the music scene. I spoke to a guy once who saw the Stooges live during this period and said it was the most inspiring thing he ever saw. If you are a rock fan and haven't heard this one, don't hesitate, just buy it. This disc never gets old and should be an essential for everyone's CD collection.

5 out of 5 stars The loudest record ever made, and one of the best........2007-03-11

This second, astonishing album by Detroit's The Stooges is one of the great, unadulterated, balls-out moments in rock music. This is the first--and last-- time that rock, punk, metal and psychedelia would all organically coexist on one record, and the album remains a touchstone for punk, metal and radio-rock bands. ALthough many have tried, the intricate and living fusion of hormonal scream, deep groove and self-sconsciousness has never been re-attained. In this, their supreme moment, the Stooges wander through the drugged and adrenal detritus of the '60s with both distortion AND wah-wah pedals way up, and the result is simply intoxicating.

What appears to be on first listen simple three-chords-and-a-scream protopunk turns into something much more interesting. Don Galucci's production makes "Fun House", unlike their eponymous effort, really open up and breathe. Galucci creates a dark hint of space behind the lumbering swagger of "Down on the Street," and on the buzz-saw "T.V. Eye," the scream-and-howl sequence at the song's climax echoes eerily as the rhythm section shakes the listener buy the throat. Guitarist Ron Ashton uses wah-wah, fuzz, distortion, echoes, layered lines and everything from scratching to full-on howling feedback to give the songs layers and suprising intricacy. The rhythm section is as heavy as it is wiggly-- Dave Alexander throbs when necessary and noodles when possible.

Riding this monster wave are Iggy's vocals. From quiet moaning of "Hurt" to the twisted screaming at the end of "T.V. Eye," Pop is almost as mesmerising on record as, fights and broken glass antics and huge see-your-soul eyes, playing live. The music avoids the macho and sexist cliches of what would become metal and punk by not identifying Pop's Id with any political or social agenda. Pop, unlike the metalheads he so inspired, is not afraid of mocking himself, leading to an odd and yet captivating emotioanl vulernability. Mix this with the lumbering swagger of f*ck-me tunes like the animal-out-of-the-cage "Loose" and you get a kind of stoner sonnet cycle. You get the feeling listening to this disc that Iggy is coming to you straight and effortlessly from the unconscious-- from the straightforward tunes like "Loose" to the paranoia and simple weirdness of "She's got a T.V. eye on me..."

The songs are heavy and groovy, sometimes tightly structured ("Down on the Street"), here and there touching ("Hurt"), and sometimes, as Henry Rollins once said, housewreckers that just beg you to pick things up and destroy them ("L.A. Blues"). This is deeply sexy, groovy and massively, MONSTROUSLY loud stuff, like its cover a maelstrom of sound, since unsurpassed. Like "Exile on Main Street" and "Zen Arcade", this record works as both beer drinking and dope-smoking music, equal parts adrenalin and groove. The Stooges, like Curt Cobain, felt hugely "stupid/and contagious", and mananged to infect all of subsequent musical history. This is THE loudest record yet made, heavy, groovy, nasty and totally sexy.

The Stooges grab your neck. They pound your head into the wall. You begin to bleed. And then you find yourself begging for more. What else is there to say? Get it and turn it up, way up.

5 out of 5 stars The animal is loosed and stalking you thru the FUN HOUSE .......2007-02-16

With the follow up to their eponymous debut, THE STOOGES make that "quantum leap" one often reads about, and in this case, FUN HOUSE is, in a word, stunning! Never pleasantly or hilariously "dumb" like the debut, FUN HOUSE is an amazing and perplexing advancement from that debut record which of and by itself would have sealed THE STOOGES' reputation. This band was even better than anyone could have ever guessed (though their record sales quickly relegated their two Elektra releases, the debut and FUN HOUSE, to the bargain bin). FUN HOUSE is jaw-droppingly unforgiving, a punch in the gut, a splash of acid in the face, hard power and hot metal, a lurching monster, referred to as "proto-punk" because of its influence on every Punk and Grunge band since, but really, such bands are belittled and reduced to mere "poodles" by this far-end risk that in fact is the most unique record of its era and a hybrid of 50s rock, 60s psychedelia, and that which was as yet unnamed (Punk) and no band has yet matched the achievement. Few records have predicted the coming decades as FUN HOUSE did in 1970, though typically unrecognized in its time. As Iggy Pop (a.k.a. Iggy Stooge) himself said, and to paraphrase, THE STOOGES could "eat all those poodles for breakfast." With a scorched earth policy that leaves no listener unscathed, this record is probably one of the most challenging records in the Rock n' Roll catalog, and not for the faint of heart, such as those moments all over the record when one hears Iggy blatantly snorting. If you ever listened to CAPTAIN BEEFHEART's TROUT MASK REPLICA you might get a shred of an idea of the accessibility of some of this record, particularly "L.A. Blues" which is a non-song cacophony of horror with the carnivorous animal Iggy loosed, roaring, and stalking the complacent world. But for the student and lover of Rock n' Roll, this record is a must. I think the primary reason Rock critics and diehard fans continue to cite THE STOOGES, especially FUN HOUSE, is because of the foresight of this material. The experimental aspect of the record is indicative of its era (it is completely un-commercial, but many bands included such material on their records in those days, though, frankly, lame by comparison) yet, like all three of THE STOOGES albums, FUN HOUSE never sounds dated. Tracks like the sustained tension of "Down On The Street", the superbly nasty and compelling "Loose," the luscious blues of "Dirt," the burping, mesmerizing "T.V. Eye," and the sucker-punch "1970," in which Iggy shrieks "...I feel alright" ending with a major snort (the sequel to "1969" when Iggy had "nuthin' ta do") are supremely realized and uncompromising, and if it weren't for their shocking effect, I'd be wearing a s**t eatin' grin. One of Rock's great romps, FUN HOUSE is not for the uninitiated, the timid, or uninspired. That being said, FUN HOUSE is one of the greatest records of Rock, a whole hell of a lot of fun, possibly my all time favorite, and one of the very few records of Rock that upon listening to for the first time I said to myself, "WOW!" In another word, a masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars Manic masterpiece.......2006-10-24

This is it, look no further: Fun House is The Stooges' manic, excessive, drug, alcohol and sex-fuelled homage to everything and anything that yer bona fide very naughty boy could ever do to have fun fun fun. Nihilistic madness, the lot of it, but not yer sophisticated New Yorker dressed in black sort of nihilism. More of yer trailer trash rebel who doesn't want to miss a minute of it.

Picture this album as the unfolding story of a weekend's rampage, beginning with the opportunistism of "Down on the Street" and ending up with the come-down of "L.A. Blues". The musical mayhem in between describes pretty candidly what he gets up to. Probably a cracking party, but one that few of us could survive intact. Some pleasures are better experienced vicariously, methinks.

Wonderful product for big kids(adults) and little kids! So glad I purchased it! Fun for all!

1 out of 5 stars Not so great.......2006-11-02

I thought the Tony Chestnut song would be a little more upbeat. The whole CD is much like folk music. I am not a lover of it.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD for Ex Ed.......2002-02-21

This CD is the best. I use it DAILY in our morning "Circle Time" with my Ex Ed classroom. The children (of all abilities and levels) LOVE it and really get into the movements and words of the songs. Tony Chestnut & 5 Little Monkeys are their favorites.

5 out of 5 stars "Miss Terri".......2002-01-25

What a wonderful surprise this CD is! I am a Preschool teacher and had previously found the 'basic' words to the title song on-line. It was sung to a slightly different tune than presented on the cd, but none the less, is a MAJOR hit with my students! It's a play on words from the classic head-shoulders-knees & toes. That particular song is a bit to advanced for the special needs children but there are MANY others that are appropriate! The kids LOVE the Swimming Song & The Mirror song, the latter being a cool down, more quiet song, with FUN movement!! I would definetly say "Add it to your collection"! I also purchased Learning Station's newest CD, Physical Ed. It too is equally good, but it is physical be prepared!! It is also geared more to the older 3's and even 4 year old students.

5 out of 5 stars Move and Groove with the Kids.......2000-12-29

I had to buy the CD version since my cassette wore out. Every song is great and kids of all ages enjoy singing as well as movin' and groovin' to the beat. The title song TONY CHESTNUT is the favorite among the younger set. It's a wonderful play on words for the body parts; toe-knee-chest-nut (head) etc. I have successfully taught this song to children as young as 3 to the ripe age of 8. Parents enjoyed learning the words and motions from their children. The rest of the songs are wonderful too. I had the luck of seeing the Learning Station in person a few years back for a Musical Workshop and it was well worth the time put it in. I recommend the rest of their CDs as well.

4 out of 5 stars Shekinah's Mom.......2006-07-20

This is a tape that "sings" many important preschool concepts. Singing makes the learning process easy for preschoolers. My daughter is 3 and in her preschool environment she has learned and is learning many of the concepts "sang by children" on this tape. I use this CD to review the concepts that she knows and to further acquaint her with skills that she is acquiring. Song # 8 is BINGO ... I used this song to teach my daughter how to spell her name. After your child has learned the BINGO song, substitute the letters in her name into the medley and your child will learn to spell their name in no time flat. We listen to Song # 5 "Sing Thru the Year" a couple of times a week. In her preschool class they are learning the months and me further reinforcing the months through the song on this CD is accelerating the learning process. She knows her shapes. But soon we will use tract 13 and 14 to help her draw her shapes. I think this is a great took in the hands of a Mom that wants to facilitate their preschoolers/kindergarteners learning and retention of these vital concepts.

5 out of 5 stars Fun Family Music.......2007-04-11

This is a fun musical experience for kids of all ages. My son (age 9) has memorized almost all of the songs and loves the humor in the music. we have given this CD as a gift numerous times and every one seems to love it.

4 out of 5 stars Truly a Family Party.......2007-01-19

Good CD to listen to with the kids. Great change of pace for when the kids start to wear out one of their other favorite CDs. A few of the songs are geared more for the adults than the kids but a good mix of songs for everyone.

5 out of 5 stars New Mom...New Trout Fan.......2005-09-08

OK,I admit it...I ordered this CD because of one song, My Hair Had A Party Last Night (The phrase has become a regular morning greeting in our house.) The great surprise about this CD...every song is a winner. No telling kids what to do or think, just great songs about cool stuff that sounds like fun! We love it!

Love, love, love!!! I have given this CD numerous times as a gift. Just a great collection of songs! I DARE you to NOT try to count along with 18 Wheels on a Big Rig!

For "adult" Trout, check out "Reel Life"...I listen to it all the time, even after owning it for about 7 years now. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars kids music for adults.......2004-05-10

For everyone who has ever said "not AGAIN" when loading traditional "kids" music in the car, this is the album for your family. We got ours on cassette and wore it out; we're still not tired of it. Who can resist a group that counts to 18 in roman numerals and gets it right? The songs are singable, danceable, and great fun. It's got just the right mix of fast and slow, silly and serious, and none of the annoying frenetic goofiness often heard in kids albums.

4 out of 5 stars Yay!.......2007-05-06

A true test to how good an album is: how many times can u listen to it in a row and still discover something new with each listen. By the 5th spin i'm hooked. Truly a bunch of guys to celebrate. Off-key, puzzling, beautiful tapestry of funk, rock and piano. When the piano kicks in on 'cough coughing' i had butterflies in my chest. I can't wait to hear their other albums.

5 out of 5 stars I am blown away........2007-04-12

Wow. This band is truly refreshing. They are a rainbow paisley oasis in a desert of brown Dockers. I hope they stick around for a long time.

5 out of 5 stars Menomena's First Album.......2005-10-12

First of all, "I Am the Fun Blame Monster" is an awesome album title because it is an anagram of "Menomena's First Album"...who does that?! Regardless of their inventive album title, Menomena's sound is also wildly creative. The thought and experimentation that went into this album is incredible and I hope everyone gets to experience the wonder of the monster...plus, the album presentation is something to be proud of and, best of all, fun to play with. I bought the album for my boyfriend and was very tempted to keep it for myself ;)

4 out of 5 stars Glad I found this band.......2005-03-13

I'm almost ashamed to say that I've just recently started listening to this band, even though they hail from my city, good old gritty Portland, OR. Though I really can't comment on the mathematics and computer programming of this music (though somehow that impresses me in a geeky kind of way), I can tell you in my humble opinion, that this album is mature and sophisticated, yet not at all inaccessible. I'm thoroughly impressed with their crashing orchestral sound... and equally blown away by the fact that they totally rock!!

As it's been said before, there is this sort of low-fi Radiohead quality to their stuff, but I hestitate labeling or associating Menomena too closely with them. After listening to this album with complete abandon, I feel like I've been through an Experience. I'm spent, but thoroughly invigorated and hopeful.

5 out of 5 stars "Try and stop us now!".......2005-01-11

This little Fun-Blame Monster sure came outta nowhere, didn't it? I mean, we have pitchfork throwing up a "featured review" one moment, followed by a chorus of indie kids and online mags screaming "hell ya!" and then it's forgotten in time for the year-end best-of lists... It came and went so fast that I'd mostly forgotten about it until I randomly came upon a used copy at the local record shop. The crude dragon drawing on the front insisted that I give it a sample listen, and, rolling my eyes, I grudgingly obliged. Now about this local record store, I have to give them credit that they even have listening stations for the used c.d.s. Still, they make it pretty clear that they don't want you there too long by making it very uncomfortable- you stand in a little booth with nothing to lean on or sit on. I wasn't planning on being there too long- only 30 secs a song, 9 songs, a quick little five minutes, right? I pressed play...and stood there for the whole 45 minute runtime. Man, it blew me away.

The first thing that sucks you in is the drumming. It pummels you with complex, danceable, near-hip-hop beats- not unlike those from the Flaming Lips Soft Bulletin. And then, the melodies come in, weave a tapestry in your head, and keep you eagerly anticipating each new moment. Piano, Saxophone, Keyboards and bass flow together in most unexpected and blissful ways. I can't remember when I last heard such bewilderingly ornate melodies- those perfect tunes that never repeat a single time more than they have to, and that reward every time you listen but are never to obtuse to leave your head.

Each song exemplifies an unique approach, but it's a wonderfully sequenced album with many of the pieces flowing into each other. Really, the only weak link are the lyrics, which are pleasant but certainly not standout. But this is POP music of the highest order. The whole stands together as an ode to the clarity that comes out of loneliness- those 4 am moments when you stare out your window, perfectly content to be perfectly alone.

Yup, it was "left-field" alright, so left-field it seems it's already been forgotten. That's a real shame- this is, without a doubt, one of the most brilliant pop records in recent years. Grab it while you can.

Milkshake, the duo of Lisa Mathews and Mikel Gehl (alums of the pop/rock act Love Riot), pours heart and soul into Bottle of Sunshine, and kids ages one to six will slurp it up the same way they did Happy Songs, Milkshake's harmony-thick debut. Mathews's pleasant voice (reminiscent of Cowboy Junkies's Margo Timmons' in its sleepy, drifty, peacefulness), and a light acoustic touch earns this act a spot in the cool kids' musicians category. Parents will love Sunshine for its pared-down folk/rock sound, and kids will appreciate a lack of shyness when it comes to getting silly. For parents, some children's records make the drone of a blender seem a preferable listening experience. In the span of two super-smooth discs, Milkshake manages to reverse all that. --Tammy La Gorce

Album Description

Well, true to the phrase "Good things take time," two years after the release of our 2002 debut CD Happy Songs, we present Bottle Of Sunshine. The disc offers fifteen brand new Milkshake originals the whole family can groove to. You'll also find lots of variety here, although most of the songs still live in the rock genre. We recorded "ABC Of Me" live in the studio with a jazz combo. It's a new take on the Alphabet Song, and each letter stands for some quality or thing that reminds us of how great we are, and how wonderful childhood is. "Boom Boom" turned into a country rock song as we added fiddle and banjo and a "yee-haa". There's a doo-wop tinged song about having fun in the water called "Woo-Woo." There are some totally acoustic songs ("Bluebird" and "Milkshake!") and some very electrified, all-out rock songs ("School" and "Space Song"). But every song is memorable. And each one was great fun to record.

British children's author/illustrator Alexis Deacon created the cover art for Bottle of Sunshine, along with illustrations for the 16-page booklet accompanying the CD. Please look for his wonderful children's books "Slow Loris" and "Beegu," both published by Kane Publishers, NY.

Bottle of Sunshine also contains a bonus: three Milkshake music videos of songs from Happy Songs. Two of these, "Fingers & Toes" and "Tall", are fully animated. The third, "Happy Song", is a live action video with some animation sprinkled here and there.

5 out of 5 stars Love this cd!.......2007-07-18

I bought this cd after seeing a Milkshake video on PBS. We have had it over a year and still listen to it every week. It is so full of energy and fun. It makes you want to get up and dance. Adults can even tolerate listening to it in the car. I recently purchased Milkshake's cd "Play!" also, but it is not as enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-01-10

I love this CD-my son can listen to it over and over and over again. One of their best!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully entertaining .......2007-01-06

From preschoolers to first graders, "Bottle Of Sunshine" will prove a 'kid friendly' favorite with its toe-tapping tunes, hand-clapping rhythms, and sing-along lyrics flawlessly delivered by Milkshake (singer Lisa Mathews and guitarist Mikel Ghel) with their usual flair and easy expertise. The fifteen superbly presented and impressively recorded pieces comprising this outstanding and highly recommended CD album for children include: Bluebird; School; Woo-Woo; Milkshake!; Boom, Boom; ABC of Me; Space Song; Book of Dreams; Jump; Smile; Ms. R&R; Rainy Day; One Wish; Sleepytown; and the title piece, Bottle of Sunshine. This is a wonderfully entertaining and sure to be kid-pleasing addition to any family, preschool, daycare center, elementary school, or community library CD music collection for children. Also highly recommended is Milkshake's other kid's CD, "Play!" which features songs about kids having fun playing baseball, bowling, pretending, playing music, having parades, planting a garden, and more!

I purchased this CD for my 18 month old daughter after hearing the ABC song at library storytime. She has some definite favorites and asks for them as soon as we get in the car. The songs are cheerful, clever and fun to dance/sing along with. We recently ordered another copy as a gift for a 5 year old. She LOVES it too!
Highly recommend!

5 out of 5 stars Fun Music Grownups can enjoy with their kids!.......2005-11-16

Not only do my kids love the music, but I do too!! We've seen them live and they're awesome. Lisa has so much energy and dances around in her "tutu" and those "crazy tights" and Mikel is so awesome with the kids. They are talented musicians who make kids music fun for everyone. Watch them on Noggin - Jack's Music Show. The videos are lively and fun! I hope they'll make a DVD of the videos, including the one's on their web site.

Atmosphere's fifth album (not including rapper Slug's numerous side projects) isn't quite as consistent as previous CDs like 2003's Seven's Travels or Lucy Ford, but it's hardly lagging far behind. For all the attention Slug gets as a rapper--deservedly so, given that he, along with Aesop Rock, is a smarter, less pissy Eminem--producer ANT is as vital to this pairing as anyone, lacing the album with everything from the hard knock beats of "The Arrival" to the gospel-influenced charm of "Get Fly," to the old-school drum assault on "Bam." Slug covers ground that he's already been renowned for, a balance of in-your-face braggadocio ("Watch Out"), tunneling introspection ("Little Man"), and a typically reliable ditty about his female problems ("Pour Me Another"). The only real fault is that the album doesn't quite seem to be as adventurous as it could be, but even in playing it (relatively) safer, this is still easily one of the top 10 rap albums of 2005. --Oliver Wang

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Their best so far.......2006-08-27

I'm so glad I "discovered" Atmosphere. They're a unique group and lyrically I think they are one of the best. Slug's lyrics betray a weary soul that is constantly at war with his demons, and finds comfort in bars (Pour Me Another) or the escapism of travel (Say Hey There). Rich with metaphors, his lyrics, which are complemented by some great production courtesy of Ant, are more literary than your average rapper. Atmosphere pleases on many levels. The combination of great beats, wicked flow, and lyrics that move you is pretty rare. Buy this album. It's their best so far.

4 out of 5 stars i love you atmosphere.......2006-08-10

this cd was ok. seeing as it has only 13 songs out the the usual no less than 15 by atmosphere it was ok. the songs i didnt like, i didnt like. the songs i did like, i loved. when i put it in my stereo, i start off with #5 say hey there. which is there first single and has a video to it. i love how they add a background singer, or a sample for another song in their songs. then i go on to hockey hair. i love that song, it has no hook tho. no problem for me. near the end slug says "what the blood clot? jump shot, fade away. watch these white kids eat it up like it was mayonnaise."

thats 5 and 6. i go on to number 8 which is pour me another. could possibly be another "im trying to get over you lucy song." go to number 9 which is smart went crazy. my favorite song on the cd. slug goes on to say "smart went nuts and rode a unicorn through the storm." then after the hook at the start of the second verse he says "smart went crazy, kiss miss daisy, love you when everday was christmas baby. maybe we should take it back to the way we were still on some what have you done for me lately?!" love that song!

then number 10. my 2nd favorite song titled angelface. "and she loved me more than i could imagine so i waited til she slept and i stepped in the traffic." then goes on to say "angels exist, i've even seen some sleep." i dont listen to 11 because its sort of too sad for me. slug is discussing an incident that happened in a town. sometimes i listen to 12. which is get fly. but i end my enjoyment by listening to number 13. titled little man. which is a father, son, father song.

tho i listen to about 6 or 7 songs out of 13. i love the songs that i do listen to. buy this cd. cigarettes are sort of messing up slug's voice unless it's just maturing but ant's beats are still beautiful. this cd shouldnt disappoint you completely, but you will like most of the cd if not all.

:)

5 out of 5 stars An intresting but effective change.......2006-08-09

Slug and Ant have outdone themselves in this amazing effort. It seems the duo have taken a step away from the overall message of their previous albums. The lyrics have started to evolve from the emo-like lyrics that their previous albums exlemplified. This isn't a god thing or bad thing. I believe that it was an expirement to see how their fans would react. They still had some of their old formula during this album which is actually a good thing because without it the duo probably would have lost some of loyal fan base that they had aquired during the 9 year run that Slug and Ant have taken.

As for the album itself, I found this to be one of my favorites because of the intresting step Atmosphere took. There was the heavy beat of "The Arrival" and the anthem like "Watch Out". But ths album also had some of the flair of their previous albums such as the sorrow in "Pour me Another" and the lyrical mastery in "Little man" Because of these incredible tracks I give this record five stars.

The future of Atmosphere is still up in the air. I'm not sure whether the duo will take another step forward and become more of a mainstream group or remain loyal to the fan base that have listened to their tracks since the late 90's. Listening to the last track, "Little Man", really makes one think
"You're raps are exhausted, stop it, everyone knows that you've lost it."
If this is indeed Slug telling himself that he's lost it the I don't think that we will see another Atmosphere record. Though this could just be a line that makes listeners think. But my theory is that Slug and Ant will revert back to the lyrics and beats that have taken them this far.

5 out of 5 stars from out of nowhere..........2006-05-30

The last track on this album is the tripartite "Little Man", in which Slug addresses the first verse to his son, the second verse to his father, and the last verse to himself. Acknowledging genealogical traits consistent among the three generations, Slug places himself at the center of the three generations in a way that suggests that the father and the son are variations of himself. Thus the piece has a sense of folding in on itself in the last verse when Slug addresses himself, and this abstract idea is reflected by the physical image of the overly self-conscious rapper curled up on an anonymous hotel bed: "rolled up like a naked fetus / come and save him, Jesus / place him back in time before the Reaganomics and Adidas". It's a masterfuly constructed piece, and though the lyrics are more blunt and conversational than philisophical, the abstact nature of the song is captured by the pentatonic, Eastern-influenced music that forms the backdrop for Slug's rhymes and gives the entire piece a quasi-mystical feel.

Nowhere else can you hear hip-hop like this. So it's ironic that, in the last verse of "Little Man", Slug sings this line to himself: "Your raps are exhausted / Stop it / Everybody knows that you've lost it". In fact, nothing could be further from the truth; with the release of this album, Atmosphere has taken their game to a whole new level.

Atmosphere showed early promise on the geeky, lo-fi "Overcast!" (circa 2001), and seemed to peak on 2002's "Lucy Ford" release. Their third CD, "God Loves Ugly", managed to be both completely introspective and almost entirely uninspired, and the follow-up CD, 2004's "Seven's Travels", was a hit-or-miss affair with a handful of memorable tracks and a truckload of filler. By 2005, the only Atmosphere CD I was listening to was "Lucy Ford", and time had tarnished most of the rhymes on that album; with the exception of "They're All Gonna Laugh @ You", the tracks on "Lucy Ford" sound somewhat juvenile today, as charming as they still are.

So I kept walking the first time I spotted this CD in the record store, figuring that Atmosphere was long past whatever brief prime they might have enjoyed a few years back. But when I sampled some of this CD on Amazon, I realized that these guys have pulled off a major comeback from out of nowhere.

The most immediately arresting feature of this CD is the production; Ant has dug deep and come up with a mind-boggling array of samples that gives this record a character unlike any other Atmosphere CD, or any other hip-hop release in recent memory. The album is permeated with a gritty, old-school flavor that relies heavily on fuzzy, distorted beats, gospel riffs, turntable scratching and sampled voice-overs that bring to mind Public Enemy's "Fear of a Black Planet". There are fantastically intricate layers of sound at work here, but never so much that the beats detract from the rhymes. On the contrary, the choice of beats and samples seems more directly related to the rhymes than on previous releases (see the discussion of "Little Man" above) in a way that gives this record a rare degree of integrity. The one notable exception is "That Night", which purposefully stands apart from all the other songs on the album and thus has a sound all its own.

Ant's complex and edgy production seems to be spurring Slug on; his delivery is far more sure here than on any other Atmosphere CD. His rhymes were always intellegent, but there's a more confident flow at work here, and even his voice seems to have more character.

Like all great pop music, this album succeeds on several levels. It has a consistency of character, but enough variety from track to track to keep the listener from getting bored. On some of the songs, distortion or other effects are applied to Slug's voice; on "That Night" he delivers the lyrics in a hushed, intimate tone. As background music, most of the songs on the album provide plenty of bump; on the other hand, discerning listeners will find that the lyrics almost never disappoint, and there's always plenty to come back for.

5 out of 5 stars Don't listen to those negative reviews........2006-05-15

I admit, I'm guilty of having slept on Atmosphere too long. I heard snatches of his stuff and wasn't impressed, I'd never gotten a good listen to him and I'd never seen him as a guest appearance on any of my favorite rappers materials - so - this is me apologizing to Atmosphere, because I can honestly say that this album is one of the most emotional and impressive releases I've heard in a long while. I give a variety of hip hop styles five stars, it's true. I've heard people ask me why I gave Jean Grae's freshman release a 5 star rating - because it brings that absolutely raw (if unpolished) emotion of a younger, budding emcee to the table. Similarly, an album like Immortal Technique or Murs earns high stars from me because of their crusading messages and clever lyrics - sometimes at the cost of an easy flow or headnodding beat. Little Brother (who I think most everyone can agree is worth the credit,) is a much more light-hearted trio than most the rap music I enjoy. Atmosphere, however, combines a little bit of each three elements.

After hearing this CD, I thought I should go out and buy his older records before reviewing this. I bought "Seven's Travels" a while ago and gave "Lucy Ford" a fair listen. I loved both albums, honestly, loved them. But I feel as thought "You Can't Imagine How Much Fun We're Having" is better in every margin. First of all, I've heard people say Atmosphere's flow is relentless and boring - not true. To me, his flow on this album is much more refined and matured than on previous ventures. The sheer rhythm of his lyrics is perfect, on point every time. It's a constant head-nodder without a break or pause where it isn't needed, which is what makes the listen-ability of this album so entirely addictive. His lyrics this time around are more cohesive - not to say his lyrics have been less put together in the past. It's just that when you listen to the songs here, and compare them to the ones on say "Seven's Travels," they make more sense. Each line leads to another, no awkward wording or phrasing, each line has a point to make, and the rhyme-scheme is flawless.

Last but not least - Ant. I cannot STRESS ENOUGH how much better the production on this album is compared to Atmosphere's previous albums. Don't get me wrong, I've been consistently impressed with Ant's production, on every single Atmosphere release. "Always Coming Back Home To You," "Trying To Find A Balance," "If I Was Santa Clause" - all great production. But the sound here is so much move lively, memorable, even emotional. The melodies and beats compliment Atmosphere's voice and flow to a T. Each track brings with it a musically molded mood that feels built especially for Slug's lyrics. Most noticeably though, the mood isn't as laid back as before. The problem I've had with other Atmosphere releases is the sheer slowness, repetitiveness, or sleepiness of the production. Not always - but often. Here, every song, whether slow-paced or kicked into high gear feels like they have more spirit, and noticeably more melody. Tracks like "Little Man," "Angel Face," and "Get Fly" are jampacked with great beats, solid samples, and beautiful, head-nodding melodies.

The emotional value of this album is amazing. Slug's lyrics are penetrating and heart-felt, and while some people say that "He doesn't sound as if he's having as much fun," I say that it sounds like he's being more genuine. "Little Man" is unquestionably my favorite track on the CD, and is probably one of my all time favorite hip hop songs ever recorded. It's beautiful, haunting, head-nodding, and sincere. "Angelface" is addictive if only for the production, while on the flipside, songs like "That Night" rely only on a solid drum beat and short, melodic chorus to showcase the personal emotions of Slug's lyrics. "The Arrival" is a fast-paced, energetic opener to the CD, but is slightly deceptive as to what you're going to get. Songs like "Say Hey There," "Smart Went Crazy," and "Pour Me Another" are all much more impressive songs on every level. Regardless of what pre-concieved notions you have about Atmosphere, be they good or bad, buy this album. You won't regert it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best remix collection I've heard.......2007-05-18

Simply put, this collection of remixes, and a few artfully selected covers, is the highest quality collection of its kind I've heard.

Most remix collections seem to have a few good tracks among a bunch of tracks that aren't worth listening to more than once. This two-disc set is the exception to that rule; nearly every song included is tasty aural bliss.

I would have expected Collide's layered organic and electronic sound to be hard to do justice while taking in new directions for remixing, but each of these artists have succeeded, often spectacularly so. Only one track is difficult for me to enjoy: Somewhere/Orchestral Mix; I find it an interesting attempt but it's not for me. The rest range from very enjoyable to music I might never want to take out of my CD player.

Get this album for The Lunatics Have Taken Over the Asylum (see also the DVD Like the Hunted), and enjoy the rest of the sweet and sultry gems from Slither Thing/Amish Rake Fight Mix to the delightfully sad Crushed/Out of Control Mix, plus plenty more.

To Collide fans, even those skeptical of remixes, this is a must-own. To those not yet a fan of Collide, you might start with Some Kind of Strange or Chasing the Ghost and then pick this up - though I'm not sure it matters, and this would still make a great listen without any prior knowledge of Collide.

5 out of 5 stars Amazingly Brilliant!!! .......2007-04-12

Collide must be one of the greatest bands ever to hit the gothic scene. The combination of Karin and Statik are explosive; indeed, Vortex is definitely their masterpiece of Remixes done right! As well as new songs that will demand your attention, highly note worthy!! Some of the best out there!

Listen to the samples on this site just so you can say "Yeah, I'm a smart consumer." If you like any combination of Collide, you're gonna end up buying Vortex, it is most certainly a treat for the ears and the imagination.

5 out of 5 stars Get lost in the Vortex.......2006-10-10

I really liked this album, while some of the songs are remixed more than once they're still able to keep a semblance of uniqueness. Then there are the little gems added to the mix "The Lunatics Have Taken Over The Asylum" and "Feed Me to the Lions" are really fun songs that quickly moved their way into my top 10 lists.

These two disks hold a variety of moods from the frantic to the meditative, there is a remix for almost all occasions and then some. If you're just starting out with your Collide obsession this is a great album to showcase their diversity and complexity; and if you're deep into your Collide wall to wall shrine then this album is hard to beat and will surely earn a coveted spot on your shrine to Collide.

5 out of 5 stars What an awesome find!.......2006-08-20

You will all think I'm crazy, but I was looking for new music one day at work, came across Collide because it was "similar" to other music I like, and bought it without even hearing it! I wasn't somewhere that I could listen to the samples, so I trusted other user reviews, and couldn't be more pleased. This CD has become a staple in my collection, and frankly, hasn't left my CD changer yet! My boyfriend even added it to his iPod. My personal favorite is "The Lunatics...", don't ask me why. I always play it on my way to the gym...and sometimes before work...perhaps it's something Freudian. :)

I absolutely adore Collide, and plan to try out their other CDs. It's amazing the feeling the music gives you. It's very ethereal, and makes you feel like you're somewhere else. Definitely a great buy, even if you're not into this type of music.

Others I would recommend in this genre are Claire Voyant (Time and the Maiden), Delerium (Karma), Hungry Lucy (To Kill a King), and Lamb (any of them, especially Lamb and Fear of Fours).

5 out of 5 stars remixed to perfection.......2006-07-06

before picking up this two-disc package, i was not familiar with the works of Collide. i bought this item on a whim, and am very glad i did. the variety of style approach is refreshing, you really don't hear the same song twice, though there are a few mixes of a few songs. these are good cds to put in on a trip or chill at the house, and i've had the album for a few weeks now and am not tired of it. enjoy the haunting effects of a great band rearranged by great artistic minds.

Of course the Stooges were stupid, that was the whole point. Three chords were okay, two were even better, one or none (the cacophonous "L.A. Blues") was best of all. Drunk on their own testosterone, Iggy Pop and Co. kept things simple, loud, and brutal--and he's been coasting on the band's rep ever since. Slow and thuddy as it sounds now, almost nobody had ever made rock as primal as this second album. Iggy howled like a psycho, the band sounded like they could barely play the elementary riffs, and occasionally a moment of bone-headed poetry made it through the glorious muck. --Douglas Wolk

Iggy And The Stooges-Fun House ****

Fun House was the second Stooges album. Released in 1970 Fun House along with The Stooges two other albums Raw Power and the self titled The Stooges became what is now known as proto-punk. The stooges were the precursor to punk. But what is interesting about that is the band had the punk attitude but their music was sometimes lengthy and often contained horns, and jazzy time signatures, all of which are not in the punk genre usually. But that in itself is what makes it punk because The Stooges did what they wanted weather it was acceptable or not.

Iggy Pop, Dave Alexander, Steven Mackay, Sott and Ron Asheton are at the top of their game here. While this was Steven Mackays last album with the band he sure went out with a bang. Mackay wasnt an official member of the band really but he was always listed on the album up until Raw Power. But anyways the band was nothing less then amazing here.

On the bands debut, The Stooges, they had a song called '1969' which went on to become a classic, well here they have '1970' which while not as good as 69, is an excellent song and what do you know it also went on to become a classic. 'Down On The Street' which opens the album and does so brilliantly. It's a hard rocker with lots of energy and great guitar. 'Loose' is a lot like 'penatrate' from Raw Power. The titled refects the feel of the sound of the album. The song is about sex obviously. 'T.V Eye' is one of the better songs on the album, and Iggy gives a fantastic performance. 'Dirt' drags on a little long but is still a great song. 'Fun House,' the title track is one of the best songs on the album. It is rich in Saxophone. This is a longer song as well, almost eight minutes in length. But it never gets boring. The album ends with 'L.A. Blues' is well just noise. The album could have been better with out it. Iggy just growls and the band just plays random notes and scales as if it is a jazz improvision. Completly aweful way to end a otherwise great album.

Fun House has gone down in history as one of the all time greatest albums in punk, rock n' roll, and music in general. Fun House is an album that no collection should be without, and an album that no collection is complete without. If your a fan of Iggys solo work then you will love this. If you are a fan of punk you will really love this because you can see where they all drew influence from. Truly a great record that I would recomend to all who are interested.

5 out of 5 stars Add A Little FIRE To Your FUNHOUSE.......2007-04-02

The sound of FUN HOUSE never gets old. The Stooges 2nd album, Fun House, was first released in 1970. They sound so much more ALIVE w/ POWER and agitated aggression, than on their debut self-titled release in 1969. FUNHOUSE is just mind blowing Sure-fire in your face ferocity!
On the front cover of the album it looks like Iggy is basking in the flames of Hell and the music portrays such a passionate deep, fiery kind of mess and rage.
Don Gallucci was FUNHOUSE's producer and directed the band members to capture the intensity felt from The Stooges live shows; and showcase it in the studio. What resulted from the studio sessions brought out a much more maniacal side to Iggy Pop, it just sounds like he was having so much fun making this album. JAZZ fused w/ Blues and Punk attitude all around.
Unfortunately in 1970, the majority record buying public wasn't interested in The Stooges or FUNHOUSE. They felt it's Hellish nature depicted a darker world of sex and drugs. I guess it was just ahead of it's time.
My favorite songs are: "Loose" - "1970" - & "Funhouse" - I do prefer RAW POWER's(Stooges 3rd album)version of "Dirt" better than the FUNHOUSE one.
The Stooges along w/ Iggy Pop and their three albums did inspire a lot of artists. Thanks to Iggy Pop's vision he influenced the proto-punks in London as well as New York. Such influence can be seen on Sonic Youth's earlier work: Confusion is Sex(their second full-length)
The Stooges also directly influenced Black Flag, Richard Hell, The Birthday Party, & in the later '80s, one of my Favorites - Mudhoney.
Rage Against the Machine - covered the opening track on FUNHOUSE -"Down On the Street," for their last album 2000s Renegades.
To Me FUNHOUSE sounds fresh even after the 37 years it has been released! And Rolling Stone named it one of the TOP 500 albums of ALL TIME(191)!

Yep - I give it 5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars Thee Sound of Hell.......2007-03-22

This is what hell sounds like. Forget the dumb reviews talking about bad musicianship, sludge etc. This is a fantastic album that grinds along, and implodes at the end like a rocket in the sky. Buy it buy it buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2007-02-25

I bought this album about 10 years ago. I hadn't heard "1970" for a while (until earlier this evening) and almost forgot what a perfect piece of chaos it is. The sax player deserves serious praise (as well as whoever suggested putting sax on a Stooges album in the first place).

Funhouse is one of the most compact, cohesive, crazy albums ever recorded. The whole thing is quite an experience.
